The Lanning Family of Newtown, Queens
THE LANNING FAMILY Of Lanning of Newtown, L.I., N.Y., And of Hunterdon Co., N.J. Lewis died Cook, F. A. S. G., of Philadelphia The Rev. Eli F. Cooley (1781 - 1860) stated in his "Early Settlers of Trenton and Ewing, Old Hunterdon County, N.J., 1883", that "There is a tradition in this family that three brothers of the name of Lanning came originally from Wales and settled on Long Island (N.Y.). They removed soon afterward to New Jersey. One bought land in the northern part of the colony, another in the southern part, and Robert, from whom the Lannings of this part of the colony descend, settled at Maidenhead, now Lawrenceville." A documented study is now presented of Dr. Cooley's Lanning Family: JOHN LANNING is found in the records of Newtown, which fronted on the East River, in Queens County, L.I., opposite Manhattan Island, in the following items of 1681 and 1682, his surname spelled phonetically by the town clerk as "Lennen". He was deceased by 1683, in which year the name of "the widow Lanning" appears in the town minutes. She was evidently the Elizabeth Laning of Newtown who conveyed to "my two sons Robert Laning and Richard Laning, after my decease" her house and ten acre lot in Newton by deed of gift dated 16 April 1688. Those two sons removed to Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, NJ by 1699, as hereinafter is shown. The 1698 Census of Newtown lists no Laning. (TAG 24: 133) 6 Dec 1681, John Lennen enters an action of debt against Thomas Etherington. 7 Feb. 1681/2, the Court finds Etherington to pay 3 pounds and the cost of suit. By deed of 16 Aug. 1681, Theopilus Phillips of Newtown conveyed to Henry Mayle, Sr., of the Island of Nevis, a tract of land at Mashpat Kills, in the bounds of Newtown, bounded east by the highway, west by the land of 1 John Lennen, on the north by the commons, and on the south by Justice Betts' land, with also an orchard at the same Kills, bounded by land of John Lennen and Justice Betts. "Know all men by these presents, that I, Elizabeth Laning, of Newtown in Queens County, do for divers and good considerations moving me thereunto, do freely give unto my two sons, Robert Laning and Richard Laning, after my decease, my now dwelling house and land, ten acres more or less, lying in the bounds of Newtown, fronting north on the highway that goes to the Kills, on the west by Joseph Reed's lot, on the east by Thomas Stevenson's lot that he bought of John Hart, and on the south by Jeremiah Reeder's land. The aforesaid house and land I do freely give as aforesaid to my two sons Robert and Richard Laning as their free land of inheritance, to them and their heirs forever, as witness my hand and seal this sixteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred eighty eight, in the third year of His Majesty's Reign." (signed) Elizabeth (her mark) Laning. Children of John and Elizabeth ( ) Laning: 2. i. Robert Laning, Sr., born in or before 1667; died after 1752. 3. ii. Richard Laning born in or before 1670; died after 1742. 3-a. iii. John Laning born in or before 1675; died in 1733 - 1739. 2 2. ROBERT LANING, born in or before 1667, son of John an d Elizabeth Laning of Newtown, Queens County, L.I., NY, removed to Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, NJ, now Lawrence Township, Mercer County, where his name is found of record as one of the 28 men "all of Maidenhead", to whom a 100 acre tract there was granted by deed of 18 March 1698/9, for a "meeting house, burying ground, and school house", part of the West Jersey Society's 15,000 acres tract above the Falls of Delaware, by the Society's agents, Jeremiah Basse and Thomas Revell, (NJ Archives 21: 517). "The inhabitants above Assenpink (Creek) ordered by the Court to be a Township of themselves by the name of Maidenhead", per minutes of Burlington County Court of 20 Feb. 1696/7, (published 1944, page 191); it was thus set off from Hopewell. Robert Laning was appointed Constable of Maidenhead on 10 December 1706, and Collector of Taxes there on 13 September 1709. He was named one of three executors in the will of Theophilus Phillips of Maidenhead, dated 18 November 1708, and with John Read he made the inventory of the personal estate of Johannes Opdyck of Hopewell Township, dated 24 March 1728/9, (NJ Archives 23: 364, 347). Robert Laning settled in that part of Hopewell Township which was set off as Trenton in 1720, as the following abstract of a mortgage given by him in 1737 indicates. Maidenhead, Hopewell, Trenton, and Amwell formed Hunterdon County, set off from Burlington in 1714. The list of Freeholders eligible for jury duty in Hunterdon County in 1741 included: Trenton Township: Robert Laning, Stephen Lanning; Maidenhead Township: Robert Lanning; Amwell Township: Richard Lanning (Genealogy Mag. NJ 37: 50). Quote: The 26th August 1703. We underwritten, having the day and date hereof, at the house of Ralph Hunt in Maiden Township, heard and read the agreement made the 20 April 1703 between Doctor Daniel ........... 3 mortgaged his 244 acres plantation in Trenton Township, said County, to the Loan Office thereof, for 36 pounds, with description same as in the above deed, and "excepting thereout 20 1/2 acres formerly sold to Thomas Lambert." Robert Laning discharged this mortgage on 26 April 1739, and on that date mortgaged the same plantation again to the Commissioners of the Loan Office, for 73 pounds 3 shillings, which he discharged on 24 April 1752, as shown in the Mortgage Book C; nos. 111 and 139, now in the office of the Secretary of State, Trenton, NJ. The estate of Robert Laning, Sr. is not found in the probate records of Hunterdon County, so the year of his death, after 1752, and the name of his wife or widow, have not been recovered here. Cooley says, in his Trenton and Ewing, 1883, page 152, that "Robert Laning is thought ot have married Miss Hart,: evidently confusing Robert Laning, Sr., with his son Robert Laning, Jr. Children of Robert Laning, Sr. (Named by Cooley, above) 4. i. Stephen Laning born about 1710; died 1781 5. ii. Daniel Laning bapt. 6 May 1713; died 1772 6. iii. Richard Laning born about 1718; died after 1786 7. iv. Robert Laning born about 1702; died after 1749 v. Frances Laning bapt. 13 Sept. 1715 in Hopewell Twp., Hunterdon County, NJ, (Penna. Genealogy Mag. 19: 283); she married, as his first wife, Jonathan Furman of Trenton Twp., said Co., who died testate in 1779, (NJ Archives 34: 194; and Cooley p. 152) vi. Mercy Laning died after 1777; married Elijah Jones of Trenton Twp., said Co., who died testate in 1779, (NJ Archives 34: 277) 4 3. RICHARD LANING, Sr., son of John and Elizabeth Laning of Newtown, Queens County, L.I., NY, removed with his brother Robert Laning thence to Hopewell Township, Burlington Co., (now in Mercer County), NJ. Richard Laning was among those listed as debtors to the estate of Thomas Smith of Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, NJ, in the inventory thereof dated 8 October 1702; and among the 72 debtors to the estate of William Blow of Hunterdon County, NJ, in the inventory dated 21 April 1722; but was a creditor so listed in that of the estate of John Muirhead of Hopewell Township, dated 9 March 1725/6; and again, in the inventory of the estate of Samuel Fitch of Hopewell Township, dated 14 May 1729, (NJ Archives 23: 433, 43, 332, 165). Richard Laning's farm on the northwest side of the Roger Park Road from the Falls of Delaware (Trenton village) to Hopewell, bounded southwest by that of his brother Robert Laning's, was so described in the latter's Deed of 15 January 1714/15, stated in brief above. Richard Laning died after 1742, on 29 April of which year his son "Richard Laning, Junr." appears of public record, but his estate is not found in the Hunterdon County probate records. The name of his wife or widow has not been recovered here. One Neshea Lanning was admitted to membership in the Presbyterian Church of Trenton on 12 September 1734. The name is a Dutch diminutive of Annatje (Anna). Children of Richard Laning, Sr. i. Richard Laning, "son of Richard Laning”, was bapt. 6 May 1713 in Maidenhead, (Penna. Genealogy Mag. 19: 281). On 29 Apr. 1742, Richard Laning, Junr. so signed the mortgage to the Hunterdon Co. Loan Office for 22 pds., on his 133 acres tract in Amwell Twp., bounded east by Thomas Gordon and John Lewis, north by William Williamson, west by Johannes Wandel Holfer, and south by Edward Milner. He 5 discharged this mortgage on 24 Apr. 1745, and on the same date, Richard Laning (signature) of Amwell Twp., mortgaged to the Loan Office his 150 acres tract in that Twp., bounded south by Martha Moray, west by Henry Kitchen, and north by Nicholas Albertson, which mortgage was discharged on 25 Apr. 1751 "for Richard Laning by Jo. Robins," (Hunterdon Mortgage Book C, nos. 164 and 202). The estate of Richard Laning, Junr., who died after 1745, is not found in the Hunterdon Co. probate records. Compare no. 6 Richard Laning, son of Robert Laning, Sr. One Richard Laning and Martha Laning witnessed the Will of Thomas Morgan, Jr., of Middletown Twp., Bucks Co., Penna., dated 12 July 1764, but no Laning estate is found in Bucks Co. probate records through 1825. One Daniel Doughty, young man, and Martha Laning, maiden, were married on 19 Dec. 1766 , per the register of the Reformed Dutch Ch. of North end Southampton, Bucks Co., Pa., (Penna. Genealogy Mag. 20: 177), ii. Isaac Laning died in 1781 iii. Susanna Laning married by license of 21 married 1733/4, John Reed of Maidenhead Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, (NJ Archives 22: 247, and Genealogy Mag. of NJ 16: 70). The will of John Reed of Hopewell Twp., said Co., dated 18 married 1749/50 and proved 12 Apr. 1750, named wife Susanna, Isaac Laning, and James Deen Execrs.; ordered his estate sold when youngest child is aged 18, and devised property to his children: Susanna, Nathaniel, Jemimah, Mary, and Alse, (NJ Archives 30: 392) 6 3-a. JOHN LANNING of Newtown, L.I., Queens County, NY, in 1695, and of Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, NJ, in 1699, here supposed a third son of John and Elizabeth Lanning of the former place. Apparently, he was the man of that name who signed his name by mark as a witness to the transfer of a right to purchase land by Gersham Moore to John Hunt, dated 26 April 1695, recorded in the Newtown, L.I. Town Register. John Lanning joined the migration from Newtown to Maidenhead, abovesaid, as is evident from the Deed of 2 June 1701, by which John Brearley conveyed to William Read, bachelor, and John Laning, yeoman, all of said Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, NJ, a tract of 150 acres there to Read, and 50 acres to Laning, of a 200 acres tract on Shabbacunck Creek in said Township, reciting grantor's purchase of same from Mahlon Stacy by Deed of 22 June 1695, (NJ Archives, 1st Series, vol. 21: 466 and 531). The grantor, William Read, died testate in Trenton Township, Hunterdon County, NJ in 1762, (Ibid. vol. 33: 347). And, Robert Lanning and John Lanning, in that order, were among the 38 purchasers of land in Maidenhead and Hopewell Townships who signed their consent to the agreement between Doctor Daniel Coxe and their agent, Thomas Revell, on 26 August 1703 at the house of Ralph Hunt in Maidenhead, recorded in West Jersey Deed Book AAA, p.8. Robert Lanning and John Lanning were also named among the 36 grantees for the lot on which the Presbyterian Church in Maidenhead, now Lawrenceville, was to be erected, dated 8 Jun 1711, granted by Ralph Hunt and Benjamin Harding of that Township, which Deed was not recorded until 1801 in the Hunterdon County Deed Book, (Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society, vol. 12, p.87). But no survey of land in the name of John Lanning is found in the Index of Surveys for the West Jersey Proprietors, of which a microfilm is in the Collections of the Historical Society 7 of Pennsylvania. This John Lanning may have been the man of that name, described as "late of Burlington County, NJ, but now of Bucks County, Penna." in a Deed of 2 April 1729, in which he and his wife Hannah conveyed to Gisbert Hendrickson of Burlington County, for 230 pounds, a 174 acre plantation there, on Doctor's Creek, with the houses, buildings, etc., without recital of title, recorded in West Jersey Deed Book DD, p.60. The grantee, Gisbert Hendrickson, died testate in Nottingham Township, Burlington County, NJ, in 1777. (NJ Archives, 1st series, vol. 34: 240). The name of John Lanning is not found in the Indices of Grantors and Grantees in the Deed Books of Bucks County, Penna., so it is suspected that his residence there was temporary. This is indicated in the record of a mortgage given by John and Samuel Lanning of Burlington County, NJ, yeomen, dated 1st May 1733, by which they gave a tract of 100 acres in Wellingborough Township, said County, as collateral for the loan of 32 pounds by the Commissioners of the Loan Office of that County, the witnesses being Benjamin Kirby and Joseph Ross, (Typescript digest of the Loan Office register, Collections of the Historical Society of Penna., shelf no. UNJ / .553). The estate of John Lanning is not found in the probate records of Burlington County, NJ, but it appears that he died between 1733 and 1739. One Hannah Laning, widow, of Evesham Township, Burlington County, NJ, and Thomas Bishop, of Northampton Township, said County, were married with a license of 1st August 1739, (NJ Archives, 1st series, vol. 22: 245). It was Thomas Bishop's second marriage, as is indicated by the fact that his will of 14 August 1741, which was proved on 2 August 1746, names four married daughters, (Ibid. vol. 30: 47). Further proof of this intermarriage 8 appears in the license for the marriage of (his son) Joshua Bishop of said Northampton Township, Burlington County, NJ, and "Martha Laning, spinster, daughter of Hannah Bishop, late Hannah Lanning:, dated 29 January 1739/40, (Ibid. vol. 22: 247) Children of John and Hannah ( (hypothetical list) ) Lanning: i. Samuel Laning, born say 1701; named as of Northampton Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, in the license of 20 Sept. 1732 for his marriage to Anne Elkinton, widow, (Ibid. vol. 22: 236, and Genealogy Mag. NJ, vol. 15: 101). The bride was then widow of George Elkinton, of said Northampton Twp., who had died testate in 1729, and daughter of Samuel Kemble of said County, (Ibid. vol. 23: 250 and 271) Administration upon the estate of Samuel Laning, of Northampton Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, was granted 19 April 1749 to Anne Lanning, widow, of the same place, with George Elkinton, fellow bondsman, (Ibid. vol. 30: 290). See Arthur Adams, The Elkinton Family, (1945), p. 23. ii. Mary Laning, born say 1713; named as of Willingborough Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, spinster, in the license of 21 Jan. 1730/1 for her marriage to William Price of Burlington Town and Co., wheelwright, (NJ Archives, 1st series, vol. 22; 247 and Genealogy Mag. NJ, vol. 15: 74). The estate of William Price is not found in the Burlington Co. probates. iii. Joseph Laning, born say 1715; named as of Willingborough Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, in the license of 2 Jan. 1741/2 for his marriage to Mary Jaquatt of same place, spinster, (Ibid. vol. 22: 236, and Genealogy Mag. NJ vol. 19: 95). By Deed of 30 March 1743, Joseph Laning, of Bridgetown, Burlington Co., 9 NJ, carpenter, and wife Mary, conveyed to James Barkley, of Pennsylvania Neck, Salem County, NJ, a tract of 190 acres on Anthony's Creek in Salem County, reciting that said Mary Laning is the only surviving child of Peter Jaquatt, deceased intestate, recorded in West Jersey Deed Book GH, p. 442. The estate of this Joseph Laning is not found in NJ probates. The above Deed corrects the statement in the Jaquett Family, (1907), pages 158 - 159, which names this Mary Jaquett as the fifth of the six children of John Jaquett of Pennsylvania Neck, Salem Co. iv. John Laning, born say 1717; died intestate in Chester Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, and his widow Anne Laning gave bond as the administratrix upon his estate, dated 29 May 1759. (NJ Archives, 1st series, vol. 32: 191). Apparently, they were parents of: 1. Samuel Laning, who married by license of 12 Feb. 1763 Esther Gaskill, both of Chester Twp., abovesaid, with Isaac Rogers of that place and Samuel Atkinson witnesses, (Ibid. vol. 22: 236). This Samuel Laning died testate in Moorestown, Chester Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, on 8 Dec. 1820, aged about 83 yrs., per notice in the True American, Trenton, NJ. this couple "were married by a magistrate in Mount Holly." Samuel Laning, carpenter, bought a lot in Moorestown of Edward French, and built a house for his family. His wife, Esther Gaskill, was born in 1739, daughter of Samuel and Theophila (Cripps) Gaskill. She died in 1823 in Camden, NJ, where her son Samuel Laning lived. Children: Samuel, who married Mercy Crispin, (per register of Gloria Dei Church, Philadelphia, 22 Aug. 1785); James: Isaac: Benjamin: and Hannah who married 18 October 1804 Edward Bullock under Chester Monthly Meeting, (Asa Matlack's Notes, in Collections of the Genealogical Society of PA). Samuel Laning, a builder, was the Mayor of Camden, NJ, 1828 - 1830. The Will of one Samuel Laning was proved in 1843 in Gloucester Co. 10 v. Martha Laning born say 1720; died after 1768. She, as "spinster” daughter of Hannah Bishop, late Hannah Laning, married first, by NJ license of 29 Jan. 1739/40, Joshua Bishop of Northampton Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, (NJ Archives, 1st series, vol. 22: 247). He died there testate in 1758, his will naming wife Martha and mentioning children, all minors, not by names, and the account of his estate, dated 25 May 1762, was made by Edward Stiles and wife Martha, late Martha Bishop, the executrix, (Ibid. vol. 32: 30). Martha married 2nd Edward Stiles. They had been married by NJ license of 14 March 1761. Vincent Bishop, of Burlington Co., son and heir of Joshua Bishop, had his mother, Martha Stiles, appointed his guardian, and she gave bond dated 2 March 1768. But the said Vincent Bishop had John Briggs appointed his guardian on 28 Dec. 1769, (Ibid. 34: 44). vi. Hannah Laning born say 1726. Samuel Cripps and Hannah Laning declared intentions of marriage to Burlington Monthly Meeting of Friends on 5 Nov. 1744, and the ceremony was reported accomplished to the Meeting of 7 Jan. 1744/5. The Will of Samuel Cripps, of Northampton Township, Burlington Co., NJ, dated 10 Oct. 1761 and proved 3 Nov. 1761, names daughters Grace Cripps, Martha Cripps, Mary Cripps, and eldest daughter Hanna Cripps, dividing his plantation lying next to Bridgetown, and appoints his friends Henry Paxson, Esq., and John Woolman executors, (Ibid. vol. 33: 100). "Samuel Cripps, son of Nathaniel and Grace, married Hannah Laning, and settled on the plantation of his father, near Mount Crips. Their children: (a) Hannah married Benjamin Hooton, 11 son of John; (b) Martha married Jeptha Moon or Moore, and settled at Dutch Neck near Burlington; (c)Mary married one Schuyler at Burlington; and Grace married Christopher Shuff, and settled first at Darby, Pa., and at Crosswicks, (Burlington Co., NJ). Asa Matlack's Notes, p. 730, in Collections of the Genealogical Soc. of Penna." --------------------------* “ An account of the names and ages of the inhabitants of the Township of Northampton as they were given in at the town meeting the 28th of the third month called May, 1709”, includes: “Bishop, Thomas age 44, Ann age 30, Samuel age 15, Margrett age 13, Sarah age 10, Elizabeth age 6, Thomas age 4, William age 3, Hannah age 1.” (Minutes published in Proceedings N.J. DANIEL LANING, baptized 6 May 1713 in Maidenhead, now Lawrenceville, Mercer County, NJ, son of #2 Robert Laning Sr., (Penna. Genealog. Magazine 19: 281); died testate in Trenton Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, early in 1772, having survived his wife who is not named or mentioned in his will of 30 October 1771. "He married a sister of Jonathan Furman" states Cooley, Trenton and Ewing, p. 158. As the will of Richard Furman of Trenton Township, dated 13 February 1752, names sons Jonathan and Josiah Furman, and daughters Frances, Sarah Closson, Mary Clark, and Elizabeth 16 Kitchen, it was apparently the daughter Frances Furman to whom Dr. Cooley referred. Some indication of correctness of his statement is afforded by the will of son, Jonathan Furman, dated 14 September 1771, as it was witnessed by both Stephen and Daniel Laning, who were brothers of testator's first wife, Frances (Laning) Furman, (NJ Archives 32: 124, and 34: 194). Daniel Laning was named one of the 16 members of the Common Council in the charter for the Borough of Trenton, NJ, dated 6 September 1746, (Penna. Genealog. Magazine 9: 227). In the Presbyterian Churchyard at Ewingville, Ewing Township, formerly part of Trenton Township, now Mercer County, NJ, is found a fieldstone inscribed "D D", marking a grave in a Laning plot, which probably refers to the abovesaid Daniel Laning who died in 1772 in Trenton Township. Other such markers in the group are inscribed "E L", "I L", and "P L", possibly referring to Enoch or Edward, Israel or John, and Phebe Laning, named hereinafter. The Will of Daniel Laning, of Trenton Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, dated 30 October 1771 and proved 7 March 1772, devises to son John Laning 20 shillings; orders his real and personal estate to be sold, and of the proceeds, to son Robert Laning 80 pounds, and the residue to my children: Robert, Daniel, James, Enoch, Hannah, and Prudence; and appoints friend Samuel Tucker, Esq., and sons Robert and Daniel Laning, executors. The witnesses were Stephen Laning, Benjamin Hart, and Charles Axford, Jr. The inventory of the personal estate, made by Stephen Laning and Richard Laning, was appraised at 77.5.0 (NJ Archives 34: 296). 17 SHERIFF'S SALE OF DANIEL LANNING'S PLANTATION IN TRENTON TWP., 1768(Quote) By virtue of a writ of Fieri Facias to me directed, will be exposed to sale, by way of public vendue, to the highest bidder, at the house of Daniel Lanning, in Trenton Township, on Saturday, the 30th day of April next, to begin at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, beds and bedding, tables, chairs, a cupboard and sundries. George Laning born 29 March 1789; died 7 April 1829, Steubenville, Ohio The above statement is from the Bible records, Vineland Historical Magazine, 21: 387. The account in the History and Genealogy of Fenwick’s Colony, Salem County, NJ, 1876, page 535, obviously the source for that in the History of Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland Counties, NJ, 1883, p. 676, that the father of John Laning (1738 – 1826), abovesaid, was one David Laning from Wales, who settled in Burlington County, NJ, in 1705, and married a young woman of the same place, about 1731, cannot be proved by the public records. More likely, since John Laning named his eldest son Samuel, and he had a brother named Samuel, they were sons of one Samuel Laning, probably the man of that name, of Northampton Township, Burlington County, who married Ann (Kemble) Elkington there in 1731, as see p. 10 above.
