Fall Mystery Tour
September 18–21
To move, to breathe, to fly, to float,
To gain all while you give,
To roam the roads of lands remote,
To travel is to live.
– Hans Christian Andersen
How wonderful to be able to anticipate the culture, sounds and sights of
a new destination when we embark on a NexTour! The club has begun its
fifth year providing wonderful travel opportunities to our valued members.
Thank you for renewing your membership for 2015.
The December mailing asked members to share their thoughts about
private jet travel at various cost levels. The results were:
Percentage of respondentsAmount willing to pay
29.6%
0%
42.2%
25%
20.5%
26-50%
1.2%
51-75%
4.7%
76-100%
1.5%
up to 150%
As you can see, more than 92% of our members would not pay more than 50% more for private jet
travel. I just revisited the charter jet market in the Detroit area—the largest charter jet now available
carries 15 passengers. The hourly charter rate is approximately $5,000 (minimum two hours flying
time per day). This translates to $1,333 per person for a two-day round-trip two hours away from
Detroit. Add another $200 per person for fuel, landing fees, and taxes and you can see this would
be about 300% more than buying an economy class ticket on most airlines. A charter to Europe
would cost $9-$10,000 per person for a three day trip. Staying longer (and preventing that aircraft
from being chartered by others in the interim) would be cost prohibitive. The alternative to a
charter jet is a business class seat on a commercial flight. We usually can purchase business class
tickets for those who want them—call us to get pricing, and tell us your intent when you send in
a reservation. Business class to Europe runs $3,500-6,000 depending on time of year; to Asia and
Africa about $8,000–$10,000. The March mystery tour was a real ‘eye-opener’ in the words of some NexTourists, but all were
thrilled with the destination in the end. Destination-revealing envelopes were opened at the
Frankfurt airport, and soon we were being amazed by the wonders of Istanbul, Turkey. We saw
the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi palace, and Basilica Cistern; cruised the length of the
Bosporus Strait; explored the caves of Cappadocia; enjoyed a performance of ‘whirling dervishes’;
and the more adventurous among us took a real Turkish Bath! Now is the time to get on board for
the fall mystery (I promise it will be closer to home).
Some of you who are single may not be aware that the ‘Nomads Solos’ organization still exists.
They asked me to mention them, so if you are single and interested in joining a local social group
whose members are interested in travel, please call Jean Cavellier at 248-689-7919. They have
monthly get-togethers, dinners, outings, and welcome new folks at their events.
Can any mystery tour surpass the excitement
generated by the Spring mystery trip to Istanbul?
This September, let’s try!
Water, water everywhere and lots of it to drink!
The Fall tour will be closer to home than Turkey,
but living in Michigan, you never know—we
might have to cross water to get to our destination.
Water is a necessity, for sure, and in the Fall we
should have no shortages—the ducks and the
drakes among you will be in seventh heaven.
Water drips, water flows, water cascades, water
spurts and water falls. Perhaps you’ll track its
appearances (and disappearances) as we tour,
and agree that moving to California is probably
a bad idea about now.
A mystery is anything kept secret, or which
remains unexplained or unknown. We can assure
you that the confluence of fun activities, tasty
food and five-star lodging next September will
keep you happy long after ‘the big reveal’!

The Mediterranean – Athens to
Monte Carlo on Azamara
A stay in Athens, the center of ancient Greek
civilization, will begin our 14-day Mediterranean
odyssey this fall. Athens’ long and important
history as an invincible city-state and absolute
ruler of the Mediterranean had a lasting impact
on the map of the modern world.
We’ll see how the ancient, the modern and
the old city harmoniously coexist when we
tour the venerable buildings (all grand, many
still functional), the old neighborhoods
(picturesque, traditional, lively), and the
modern, cosmopolitan Athens.
After two nights in Acropolis-view rooms in
our luxury hotel, we’ll journey to the ancient
city of Corinth and the port of Kehries, where
St. Paul disembarked, before continuing on to
the Azamara Journey which will be waiting at
the port of Piraeus.
Our Azamara cruise includes interesting
destinations and seven late or overnight stays
in port. We’ll spend a day on Crete, moored in
Chania’s picture-perfect Venetian harbor, and
discover the Renaissance treasures of Valletta,
Malta. The Republic of Malta is a small island,
122 square miles, with a population of around
450,000, making it one of the world's smallest
and most densely populated countries.
Here’s a chance to add this gem to your list
of “Fascinating Countries Visited.”
Catania is the gateway to Sicily’s archeological
treasures near Syracuse, and to Taormina which
is set high on a hill and has a beautiful Greek
temple. The charming old town of Ortygia, the
historical center of Syracuse, is also fascinating.

Niagara-on-the-Lake – The Play’s the Thing
If plays are your thing, consider this delightful
three day NexTour to the charming flowerbedecked Ontario town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
We’ll catch three Shaw Festival productions and
have two mornings free to shop, explore Fort
George, stroll through the historic district or
take a horse-drawn carriage ride!
Our flights will be in and out of Buffalo, NY,
and it’s a short 28 mile drive from Buffalo to
the Falls. Our first day includes lunch at the
revolving restaurant atop the Skylon Tower.
A 52-second ride in a glass elevator will whisk
us 775 feet up the Tower, and our meal will
include spectacular views of the Falls, the
Great Gorge, the Niagara wine district and
the city skylines of Buffalo and Toronto.
The Shaw Festival is a major Canadian cultural
icon—ten entertaining, challenging, surprising
and, above all else, unique plays are brought
to the stage each year by a talented team of
Canadian actors, directors, and designers. We
have chosen three of these for our group’s
enjoyment.
During your free mornings you’ll want to explore
the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The town is small and most shopping and
attractions are along King and Queen Streets
in the historic district. It was burned down
during the War of 1812 but was quickly
rebuilt and became an active commercial
center with shipping and ship-building
industries and warehouses. The beautiful old
homes lining the tree-shaded streets attest to
the prosperity of its citizens.
Niagara-on-the-Lake visitors stroll along the old
streets, enjoy the comforts of fine hotels, dine
in the varied restaurants, and, if even for a little
while, journey back in time to a more leisurely
time. Our hotel, the Queen’s Landing, is a block
from Lake Ontario, and convenient for shopping
and strolling. Make time this fall to indulge your
taste for theater and charming small towns.

The musical Sweet Charity brings back
the sights and sounds of 1960s New York
City where a dance hall hostess dreams
of a brighter future but gives her heart to
all the wrong guys. It’s a song and dance
extravaganza with many memorable
numbers. Pygmalion, the story of Eliza
Doolittle, a flower-seller who dreams of
moving up in the world, inspired the
musical My Fair Lady; this production will
offer a contemporary point of view and
show us how this story of class, accents
and transformation continues to speak to
the modern day. You Never Can Tell is one of
Bernard Shaw’s most light-hearted comedies.
The Clandon family is adjusting to British life
at a summer resort and their mishaps and
romantic skirmishes still resonate in today’s
battle of the sexes.

Charleston & the Spoleto Festival—a Double Delight Charleston & the Spoleto Festival –
a Double Delight
Visiting beautiful, historic Charleston, South
Carolina, is a treat anytime, but we’ll intersperse
our touring with four included performances
from the annual Spoleto Festival offerings—a
double delight! Spoleto Festival USA, America’s
premier performing arts festival, fills Charleston’s
historic theaters, churches and outdoor spaces
with performances by renowned artists and
emerging performers in opera, theater, dance,
and chamber, symphonic, choral and jazz music.
We’ll see four performances—Madeleine
Peyroux, a smooth jazz vocalist; Pianist Rita
Marcotulli and accordionist Luciano Biondini; a
chamber music concert; and a traditional performance of Romeo and Juliet.
We’ll tour Charleston twice: first by motorcoach
to get an overview of the entire city, second
by horse-drawn carriage to get a more intimate
view of the Historic District’s neighborhoods. This
elegant city of ironwork balconies, colorful stucco,
lush palmetto palms, and graceful mansions
is a magnificent spectacle. Some say the best
way to enjoy Charleston is to simply stroll its
enchanting streets, soaking up the antebellum
architecture and languid atmosphere. Founded
by English colonists in 1670, today it boasts 73
Colonial buildings, 136 from the late 18th century
and more than 600 built before the 1840s.
One morning we’ll leave the city to tour Magnolia
Plantation and Gardens. We’ll see the main
house, touring the ten rooms open to the
public which are furnished with early-American
antiques, porcelain, quilts, and Drayton family
heirlooms. Magnolia Plantation Gardens are a
tranquil landscape where humanity and nature
are in harmony—a Romantic-style garden.
A late spring visit to historic Charleston is alluring
by itself, but combine that with the Spoleto Festival
and we think it’s doubly delightful—send a
reservation now so NexTour can assure that a hotel
room and event tickets are reserved for you.

store for you! Built in the 1890s as the private home of George Vanderbilt,
the astonishing 250-room French Renaissance chateau is set on an 8,000
acre estate in the majestic Smoky Mountains. We’ll be guests of present-day
Vanderbilts during our stay at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. You’ll have time to
visit all the estate attractions. In Asheville we’ll tour the city, take a Food Tour
of local restaurants and gourmet shops, visit Chimney Rock State Park to enjoy sweeping views of Lake

The Beautiful Blue Danube—Budapest to Prague
Jun 27 – Jul 10, 2015
“The Blue Danube” is the common title of the Strauss waltz, "By the Beautiful
Blue Danube". It remains one of the most popular pieces of music in the
classical repertoire—come with us next summer to experience the river
which inspired Strauss. NexTour believes that this cruise aboard the new
Avalon Expression is the best on offer because travelers will stay two nights
in Budapest, and three in Prague (as well as seven nights on the river
visiting other historic towns and cities in Germany and Austria). What a
great chance to see these wonderful cities in more depth than most cruisers, and on the same trip!
From $4,410 double/$6,380 single. Air cost to be determined at time of reservation.
Details in the November 2014 issue.
July 4th - NYC Fireworks Extravaganza
Jul 3 – 6, 2015
The holiday weekend in New York City! What could be better? We’ve included
a half-day panoramic tour on arrival and accommodations in the heart of
things near Times Square. It wouldn’t be the Fourth without fireworks, so
we’ll watch that explosive extravaganza from the best seats available—
aboard a large luxury yacht on the East River. Last year the display was set off
from four river barges and the Brooklyn Bridge; it should be equally impressive this year. As we sail down Manhattan to our anchoring location the captain will do his best to give us
views of the Statue of Liberty and the magnificent Manhattan skyline too! Of course there’s plenty of free
time built in to shop, explore the neighborhoods, sample the many restaurants or see that show you’ve
been wanting to take in—there’s never a shortage of fun in Gotham!

wine-soaked towns—Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza, and Montepulciano—
while staying in a country house. Of course, we’ll spend one day in
Florence. In Liguria, we’ll stay in Monterosso, one of the five Cinque Terre
towns, while we explore the five villages of this UNESCO World Heritage
Site. In Lombardy, stay in the town of Como right on on the Lago di Como while exploring exquisite

Gros Morne Nat’l Park – Discover Canada’s Viking History
Jul 27 – Aug 3, 2015
Our week begins with two days exploring Gros Morne National Park in
Newfoundland, one of Canada's greatest natural treasures. The Park is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the importance of a section known
as the Tablelands, one of the world’s best examples of rock exposed from
the earth’s interior where tectonic plate collisions created formations as
barren as the moon. We’ll then follow in the footsteps of early European
visitors, the Vikings, reliving the early Middle Ages as Parks Canada historic enactors bring the story
of the Norse in the New World to life. We’ll visit Labrador as well, hoping to spot spots whales, seals,
icebergs, puffins and pelagic seabirds on our ferry ride over. Have we aroused your interest? Read the
extended itinerary on the web site and send a reservation soon!
$3,260 double/$3,500 single. Air cost to be determined at time of reservation. Details in the April 2015 issue.
Crater Lake National Park & Ashland, OR
Aug 23 – 28, 2015
Oregon’s attractions are varied and impressive, and this tour highlights two.
The National Park surrounds Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the US, which
lies inside a caldera created 7,700 years ago when what is now known as
Mount Mazama collapsed following a volcanic eruption. We'll stay at Crater
Lake Lodge, on the rim of the lake, for two nights as we explore the Park.
Small-town Ashland has classy cocktail bars and upscale restaurants, live
jazz in the clubs and cafes, lots of art galleries, and mineral springs day spas. We’ll attend a matinee
performance of The Happiest Song Plays Last at an Oregon Shakespeare Festival enclosed venue one
day, and a dinner theater presentation of the musical Cabaret another day. Whether your aim is to check
another beautiful national park off your ‘to-see’ list, or you just love small towns and theater productions,
send a reservation and add Oregon to your summer calendar!
$1,730 double/$2,390 single. Air cost of $820 through May 18 or until block of seats is sold. Details in the April 2015 issue.
British Royals & Nobles
Aug 21 – Aug 29, 2015
Visualize quintessential England and Scotland: castles and nobles, palaces
and royalty, rolling hills, beech woods, and history, history, history! We’ll stay
outside London in charming Windsor for four nights as we tour the Chiltern
Hills and Surrey. Our hotel is on the River Thames directly across from Windsor
Castle making it easy to take a boat trip, tour the castle, and explore cobbled
Church Lane and Market Street. We’ll then fly to Edinburgh where we’ll tour

walking distance from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Visits to six castles, manor houses and
palaces will ground us in British nobility through the centuries Two special interest optional tours will
be offered: Two days on the luxurious Royal Scotsman hotel train out of Edinburgh; and ‘Downton
Abbey’ fans will want to see Highclere Castle and visit the village of Bampton where many of the
outdoor town scenes are set.
