Alex Price, Inaugural Captain U16s, Caitlyn Swanson and Brittany Perry Co Captains U18s Courtney Cramey, Captain SA AFL Women’s State Open Team 2011 South Australian Women’s Football League Annual Report PRESIDENT’S REPORT What an extremely busy year 2011 has been! The 2011 Season commenced on Saturday 30th April under lights at Modbury Oval. The League welcomed new team Modbury Hawks to the field for their debut against Central District. Six teams were now to compete in the League for the Season. Although there was plenty of nerves and excitement, Modbury kicked a minor score to allow Central District to run out victors to record their first win. Congratulations must go to Julie Wells for her organisation in getting Modbury Hawks up and running. The League was lucky enough to have been given the 2011 AFL National Women’s Championships to host in early June to coincide with its 20th Anniversary. Planning commenced with the organisation of this mammoth task late last year and I would sincerely like to thank Dara Braithwaite who volunteered on her days off to assist me in this process. Gratitude must also go to the SANFL for their in kind support in providing ovals and manpower for some of the many roles that had to be carried out throughout the Championships. The Championships went down as one of the best and all States were most appreciative of the efforts put in by SA for the running of the carnival. In July, the Inaugural Under 16 School Girls represented SA at the Nationals in Canberra and came third overall in the Championships and September the U18s went to the Gold Coast for their Nationals. Both teams did their State proud. Reports on these two Nationals and the Open State Women’s are detailed later in this Report. Mid June saw Barry Oates, SANFL Community Umpires Manager take over the allocation of Umpires for the remainder of the Season. Barry is going to work with the League in providing a strategy for allocation of Umpires for Season 2012. Thank you Barry for your efforts and coming on with little notice. The League would also like to thank Central District for providing Umpires when Barry wasn’t able to. The League throughout the Season participated in two Bunnings Warehouse BBQ’s, Pink Round coordinated by the SANFL for Breast Cancer Awareness and the Australian Credit Union Central Lottery Ticket sales, which not only bring the League in funding, also those Clubs who participated. The League in conjunctions with the SANFL had discussions and workings with Whyalla, Yorke Peninsula and Broke Hill to assist in establishing Women’s Football in Regional Areas. The Board of Management at one of their Meetings decided to bring in Club based U18s to commence in Season 2012 and discussions have also been held with Ingle Farm and Pooraka. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Management and the Executive for their efforts and support throughout 2011 and in particular, Emma Gibson SANFL Female Football Coordinator and Peter Cates SANFL Inclusive Programs Manager for their tireless efforts in working to put female football further on the map in South Australia. 2012 is going to be another hectic year in Women’s Football and I wish you all the very best for the Festive Season!! CHERYL CATES President 2 TREASURER’S REPORT ABN: 70 317 929 448 The 2011 Season commenced with a balance of $10,745.29 for the General Account and $2,036.08 for the State Account. Fundraising throughout the year came from: Bunnings Warehouse BBQ Australian Credit Union Lottery Chocolate Drive U18s Raffle U18s Kickathon U18s Fundraising Night State Open Team Sale of new and used footballs Gate takings from Finals Sale of Budgets at Amateur League Finals U18s Various sponsors and individual sponsors for State Teams Sale of Can/Stubby Holders The League was once again successful in applying for the following Grants: Australian Sports Commission for Elite Indigenous Players for all Representative Teams Office of Sport and Recreation for assistance with running of the 2011 AFL National Championships Once again, the League participated in a Pink Round organised by the Community Football League (CFL), donations received from this were paid to the Cancer Foundation via CFL. It was very pleasing that all Clubs paid their fees to the League by the due date and are fully financial for the Season. The League’s Financial Accounts have now been transferred over to the MYOB Accounting System and will be further streamlined in 2012. The League is in a good financial position to commence Season 2012. JUNE BUNKER Treasurer 3 4 5 EAGLES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (EWFC) 2011 As the football season comes to an end, 2011 has been another very successful one for the Eagles Women's football Club. In the 20 th Anniversary year of SAWFL, Eagles/Edwardstown affiliation secured its 11 th premiership and continued off field success. This year saw the President of the previous two years, Del Barczak step down from her role, from the new President I show huge appreciation for the efforts of the previous two years and to the efforts of my current committee members. The Eagles off field success can be attributed to a long term sponsorship deal held with the Lord Melbourne Hotel which has provided the club with important financial support and a venue for social events throughout the season. A huge thanks to Kym and all his staff at the Lord Melbourne Hotel. I also wish to acknowledge the support of Edwardstown Football club, to President, John Shaw and the committee at the club we are thoroughly enjoying this partnership and look forward to the relationship continuing to grow in coming seasons. We were also delighted to be the SA winner of the ADF, Army—Kick for your Club challenge for the second year in a row, a big thanks to Coach Jules Smith for setting up and logging on every day for the Club rewarding the club with another financial prize. In the football department, Eagles welcomed a number of new recruits including our first junior recruits to join the club in a number of years, Hannah Crump and Krystal Rankine. Eagles endured a long season with many players suffering injuries throughout, however the team made it through the minor round season only losing three games. This season was the first finals campaign to include a Semi and Preliminary final round meaning finishing minor premiers in 2011 didn't guarantee a Grand final appearance. Once again a big thank you to Jules Smith for her coaching efforts and all the support staff volunteers, Dave, Gavin, Mulvie, Mark and Melsy, our club would not see the success it does without these valued volunteers. 2011 also saw the National State Carnival held in Adelaide, congratulations to the Eagles representatives who participated in the carnival, Cass Hartley, Sarah Maserio, Dannielle Cresp, Eliza Oates, Naomi Maidment, Lea Fry and Kylie Guarino. A big congratulations to Danielle Cresp for making the AFL talent squad and to Kylie Guarino for winning the State Team 2011 Best and Fairest, a great effort and reward for a great week. Eagles were well rewarded at the Dutschke Medal night, with Cass Hartley finishing Runner Up for the Dutschke Medal, and Fiona Clancey winning the Glazbrook Medal as the Leading Goal Kicker. Medal winners at the 2011 club presentations included; Cass Hartley and Lea Fry joint Best and Fairest, Sarah Maserio, Mulvie Award winner and Eliza Oates winning best team man. I would like to thank all the internal and external partners that keep the Eagles Women’s Football Club the successful and cohesive group it is and look forward to doing it all again in 2012. NAOMI MAIDMENT PRESIDENT 6 7 GREENACRES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Dragons) 2011 2011 has seen Greenacres Women's Football Club (GWFC) secure another Grand Final berth and fell short to the ever resilient Eagles. As a club and playing group, we know as the competition expands, these opportunities may diminish as new talent and enthusiasm for women’s football is uncovered and developed. Hence, as a club, we have in the past two seasons acknowledged the need to grow as a club in both the administrative and playing sphere. To be the second best club in the League as the final siren is blown to complete the last game of the season, can only be a tick in the successful box. Now as summer sports all kick off and people forget the season just passed, a review of the on-field season has been completed by the coaching staff and new strategies are already being formulated to ensure GWFC are again successful on the field in Season 2012. As a club, we see that on-field success is important, but it is evident that the GWFC has now started the journey of administrative development. The South Australian Women’s Football League (SAWFL) introduced the “Club of the Year‟ and the GWFC was announced as the club to have been judged the winner of this award for 2011. This can be attributed to the hard work of the committee who work Behind the football scenes to ensure the logistic running of the football club progresses. We also acknowledge the volunteers who do not hold an official position on any committee, but show up week after week to support and contribute to the GWFC. Without these people around football, clubs such as ours would not survive. The GWFC is in a fortunate position with its relationship it has built up over previous years with the Greenacres Football Club (GFC). It has not been without its hurdles building this working relationship, but it now seems the GFC is embracing the women’s team and can see the input from the girls with regards to volunteer hours GWFC players and members have contributed to the GFC. This again will be a focus as we move forward in 2012. The GWFC would like to thank the SAWFL Executive for their tireless work to afford the opportunity for our club to field a women’s AFL team. We, as a collective group, understand that this is imperative to the workings of an organisation such as SAWFL, and our appreciation to Cheryl Cates and her committee is extended with warm thanks. It is with excitement that we now embark on Season 2012 with the introduction of the Under 18 Competition which the GWFC sees as the way forward to create the female player pathway. Thanks to other SAWFL Clubs for Season 2011 and good luck in Season 2012! MEL RUCHS PRESIDENT 8 9 PORT ADELAIDE WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Magpies) 2011 Season 2011 has been very successful for Port Adelaide in a number of areas. On field the team progressed in developing a stronger playing list, growing the number of players, both younger players and mature age recruits to the game. During the season we defeated every team in the competition and finished a respectable third. The team had good representation in the state teams in both the open and under 18 division. This year we unveiled a new home and way guernsey as we continue to invest in the players. Our number one ticket holder has been Andrew McLeod, the team really enjoyed Andrew training with the group and the sharing of his skills. The winning of the Dutschke Medal by Emma Sampson was a true highlight as she is our first winner of the medal and a very worthy winner. This year we also had our first 100 game players, congratulations to Kristy (Killa) Rudd and Kirsty Degabriele for their achievements and dedication to our team. Our off field support staff has also grown and we have been well supported by a great group of volunteers who give up their time for the benefit of the club. We also moved our social functions to the Prince of Whales Hotel as we grow our affiliation with the Port Adelaide Football club which included playing home games at Alberton and Ethelton. Next year we are looking to announce further changes associated with the “one club” initiative. We cannot thank our sponsors enough for their fantastic contribution to the club, in particular we wish to acknowledge our major sponsor McDonalds for their support. The club remains in a healthy financial position, with both our on field and off field strategies progressing well. Bring on season 2012 SHAUN KENNEDY PRESIDENT 10 11 MORPHETTVILLE PARK WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Roo’s) 20101 What a year is has been for the Morphie’s Chicks!! We started the season on a high coming out with all guns a blazing and defeating the reigning premiers who we lost to in Season 2010. Unfortunately, towards the middle of the season, we got hit with some major injuries to our core players and even some taking fantastically wonderfully holiday time. Unfortunately we couldn’t finish off the season with a comeback win and take the trophy; however we still managed to make the finals. Even though our season wasn’t too successful on the field in our competition, we had some great milestones and triumphs throughout the season. This year we saw a more improved committee formed with a lot of the playing group wanting to get involved and make a difference, which has been a huge success. 2011 also saw a good number of our girls being chosen to represent in the State Team. Courtney Cramey, Deni Varnhagen, Angela Moritz, Tess Baxter, Talia Barrett, Tammy Scott and Lauren Lante and also our very own Coach, Steve Baxter once again being the head coach for the Team. Courtney also had a very successful time in the competition as she was named Team Captain for SA and then went on to be named in the All Australian Team. With Courtney’s success, she was chosen amongst eight other females from around Australia to go to Melbourne in the AFL Grand Final week to participate in the AIS—AFL Draft Camp with the best boys from the Under 16 and Under 18s National Championships. Furthermore, she will be attending the High Performance Academy, a week long camp in June 2012 and will be lucky enough to play in a curtain raiser on the MCG before the Queens’ Birthday clash!!!!! Deni Varnhagen was also recognised this year as an up and coming successful female footballer and made an appearance in SA Life Magazine. Huge congratulations to our girls who have had success this year and bring on 2012 as it can only get better, and we look forward to the introduction of Junior Girls Football. On behalf of the Club we would also like to mention and thank Brian Higgins who has announced his retirement at the end of season 2010. He has been with us since we moved to Morphies and has made us into the team we currently are today. Unfortunately we were not able to add a Premiership under his name but he certainly wont be forgotten when we do!! REBECCA BOWERING PRESIDENT 12 13 CENTRAL DISTRICT WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Bulldogs) 2011 The 2011 season started with a new coach for our women’s team. Kevin Brooks took over from Russell Hall and the women started training before Christmas, had a break and then returned in January very keen and eager to get started. We also had Ainslie Baylis come onto our committee as Women’s coordinator and she did an excellent job in keeping the girls up to speed with everything throughout the year. Michael Gage was our trainer and he looked after the girls and made sure they were all fit to take the track each week. Our first game was played at Modbury and the women were very excited when they won their first game, unfortunately that excitement was short lived as Modbury were the only side they managed to beat all year. We kept most of the girls we had in 2010 and did manage to get a few new ones to increase our numbers Therefore ending the season with about 40 registered players. There were a couple of injuries during the season and therefore lost a couple of girls because of it. All in all, the girls kept up their enthusiasm throughout the season and finished off the year wanting to know when training for 2012 was starting! The Club was very pleased when Brittany Perry won the trophy for the best Under 18 player which was presented at the Dutschke Dinner held at AAMI Stadium. We finished the season with our own presentation dinner at our headquarters at Argana Park and Brittany Perry was acknowledged as the Best & Fairest player for the season, Sarah Ellis was runner up with Emma Gibson being most consistent. Our leading goal kicker was Lesley Burrows, Most Improved player Renee Lambert while Renae Dearman was awarded the coaches trophy. Renae so committed to playing for Centrals she travels from Port Lincoln most weeks. The club decided to start a perpetual trophy this year and named it The Pat Watson Players Award, this trophy will be voted on by the players each week and the player this year was Hannah Potger, Brittany Perry also received a cup for the player of the year. PAT WATSON SECRETARY 14 15 MODBURY WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Hawks) 2011 What can I say, but the addition of the Ladies Senior team has been a massive success for the Modbury Football Club! On-field we saw a massive improvement every week and we are looking forward to the addition of some more senior players to the group in 2012 so as to try and close the gap on the more seasoned teams on the scoreboard. The camaraderie has been second to none with the group, even though they have had a tough time on-field, they have really lead the way with enthusiasm and belief that they are building something special with this group of ladies. I must congratulate all on-field players for there contribution. We must also congratulate Sharon Taylor for her award from the SAWFL and for being the first lady to score a goal for the mighty Hawks. Their off-field performance has seen many best on ground performances from some of the ladies and it has really been a blessing to see them at events, meals, presentations and even having their own footy trip. We are so proud of the group and we as the Senior Football body are really excited that we have backed the vision leady by Julie Wells, Colin O’Donnell, Tony Stewart and Greg Hankins. All must be thanks whole heartedly for their tireless work towards the Ladies teams‟ success on and off field. Modbury Women’s Football Team was formed after accepting an offer to play in SAWFL in the 2011 Season following the first Season of U16 girls footy in 2010. The first training session was on 23rd March which didn’t give us much practice time till the first game. We had about 17 in attendance with only five of the girls that had played the game before at U16s level. However, by the end of the Season we had 34 players on our list that all actually played at least one game. As a new team, it was great to see that each week we were able to put a full team on the field, to the point that one game we had 26 players available, and all taking to the field. Season 2011 started with a night home game at Modbury Oval against Central District, all the girls were going out to have a dip and try for a win!!! We didn’t even get close, but we did score our first point!! Our second game was a real hammering loss to Port Adelaide by 280 points which was our largest defeat. Game 11 against Central District was our „best loss‟ of 102 points. The last game of the year was our greatest achievement on the scoreboard, yes, we finally scored the first and only goal of the year!!! Modbury Football Club has really got behind the team with senior players and even the A grade coach coming out to training and lending a hand. Presentation night was held in conjunction with the men’s teams and was a great success 16 Award winners for our Inaugural Season were: Best & Fairest Runner Up Most Improved Most Consistent Coaches Award SAWFL Rookie of the Year Sharon Taylor Shannon Rowe Jenny Beaumont Mel Richards Taylor Bone Sharon Taylor All the players are so eager to play on for Season 2012 and are already talking about when're-season‟ is going to start. JAMIE THOMAS PRESIDENT 17 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN STATE WOMEN’S AFL CHAMPIONSHIPS ADELAIDE June 2011 Firstly, thank you to SAWFL for giving me the opportunity to coach the State Team for 2011. Having the Nationals in SA certainly was a different experience to previous Nationals interstate. To start with a squad of 80 players back in late January came out for selection and we finished with 26 players to represent their State at the Nationals in early June, this was an interesting journey. A big thank you to Rell, John and Tim for their support and input leading up to and during the carnival. Did we or did we not have a successful carnival? If we go by win/loss, no we did not however, to come from Division 2 and be very competitive against the other states, we took huge steps forward. The squad was made up of 13 first year state players, 10 second year players and 3 players who had represented their state 3 or more times. We did go in with a very inexperienced team, especially competing in Division 1 however, the experience gained by these players will stand them in good stead in to the future. Thanks must go to Murray Amos and his team of trainers, Tanya and Amber as Team Managers, Gavan as water runner, Darren Smith the team runner and Peter Cates and the SANFL for their assistance. To Cheryl and her committee, a big thank you on the job well done to host the Nationals is a huge exercise and from what I saw and heard, all went very smoothly. Congratulations to our Captain, Courtney Cramey on her selection in the All Australian Team and Danielle Cresp for her selection in the High Performance Academy. To all players, thank you for your time and effort, you put in before and during the carnival, it was of the highest level and your behaviour on and off the field did SA proud. State Awards for the Nationals were: Kylie Guarino (Eagles) Angela Moritz (Morphettville Park) Mel Wilson (Greenacres) Jacinta McKenzie (Greenacres) Best and Fairest Runner Up Best and Fairest Best First Year State Player Coach’s Award STEVE BAXTER State Coach 2011 18 19 South Australian AFL U18 Youth Girls National Championships 2011 Gold Coast For all involved in Football, we know that the closer you get without winning the title, the more it hurts inside. Some may say that winning just one game, we were not close to winning the Championships, but we know in ourselves that our best was good enough, that opportunities were there for the taking and that the disappointment will only feed the hunger for glory in 2012. The SA U18 Youth Girls Football Team put in an inspired effort during the 2011 AFL U18 Youth Girls National on the Gold Coast. The team played four days straight with an opener against Victoria. This was a fantastic game of football and worthy of being the final of the carnival. Holding a narrow lead at quarter time the SA girls had some real belief of causing the biggest upset in Women’s Football history. By half time, the Vic’s had gained the lead with a goal after the siren. The second half was a real arm wrestle, physical and skilful. Those who saw or who have since seen the game can vouch for this. As coaches, we could not be more proud of the way our girls hung in there and committed themselves to the challenge. In the end, a few mistakes and missed opportunities in our forward half, left us 11 points down at the final siren. This was disappointing for us all however, after reflecting on the game we had to quickly move the loss to the back of our minds and take the many positives into the rest of the week. Game two was against Victoria Development who had just come off a rest day and shown some good football against Victoria on day one. It was a real arm wrestle as we went from „hunters to the hunted‟ after such a great effort against the Vic’s. In the end, the girls prevailed with a flurry of goals in the second and final quarters to win by 17 points. Again, as coaches, we commended the team for the way they went about their football as many decisions and the very vocal crowd were strongly against them. They dug deep, stayed positive and got the job done to reach the Semi-Finals. We played Western Australia in the Semi-Final on Friday, who had also just come of a rest day. The team was full of life and confident that they could pull off an upset. Play was dominated by our girls in the first quarter but without scoreboard pressure, we left the game wide open for WA. In the second term, as a good side does, the Swans kicked six goals to one to hold a handy half time lead. We regrouped at half time and in the third term gained some momentum, but again were unable to put the score on the board. The final quarter was tight, until very late in the game when the Swans registered goals late to push the final margin out to six goals. The loss was heartbreaking as we had set our sights on reaching the National Final and knew we had wasted opportunities. The pain was evident as many players broke down. We took comfort as Coaches knowing that football, and representing South Australia, meant so much to this group of young ladies. With Friday’s loss to WA, we were placed in the play-off for 3rd & 4th against Queensland. The team played some brilliant football and controlled the vast majority of the game. In further heartbreak for the whole tour 20 party, we could only manage to kick 2-11-23 for the match due to very wasteful shots on goal. Added to these, missed chances that did not even register a behind and pain becomes more evident. Queensland was awarded a 50m penalty within the last minute of the game resulting in a goal and a four point win. The disappointment of the Semi-Final loss was multiplied with this one and as a team we stayed on the outer wing for 20 minutes as the reality of what had just happened sunk in. Many players were inconsolable. I think it has been highlighted enough that results from the week were disappointing and heartbreaking. The most pleasing thing to remember is that we have closed the gap on Victoria and Western Australia. We have girls here in South Australia who take a huge amount of pride in representing their State. We have a hunger for success, and when that success is not delivered, we take it personally. We feel as coaches that we had a side that was capable of winning the Championships although severely lacking playing depth, resources and support. We are grateful of the continued assistance from the South Australian Women’s Football League (SAWFL) and the South Australian National Football League’s (SANFL) Female Football Manager however, we are disadvantaged compared to other States in terms of resources and support. This is not just in support for the Championships however, for the lead up and development of Female Football in South Australia. To represent the State in the country’s premier sport, our girls are forced to spend close to $1,000. This resulted in a number of players who would have been selected in the team, missing the opportunity due to financial difficulty. We will continue to lose athletic female footballers to other sports if we cannot offer financial assistance to our Female State Football Teams, therefore we all need to think of ways in which we can generate increased funds to invest in this much needed area. Outside of support from the SAWFL and SANFL, we urge current players to do their part in developing the game by introducing new players to clubs and academies to enable us to become a force in Female Football. We had a team on the Gold Coast that all South Australians can be proud of. No we didn’t come home with the results we wanted, but apart from winning, everything else was very positive. TIM STEWART AND RELL SMITH U18 Coaches 21 South Australian U16s Secondary School Sport Canberra July 2011 A total of 32 players from Adelaide and country areas including Whyalla, Eastern and Upper South East Zones and Mt Gambier nominated for the Inaugural U16 girls Schools State Football Team and were invited to attend trials. The team trials were held at AAMI stadium, Max Basheer Reserve on Sunday May 1st and 8th. Once both trials were complete, a 25 girl team was selected. Trainings were planned, and players attended two trainings a week. All trainings were well organised with the coaches providing valuable instruction both in relation to skills and team strategies to all the players. In preparation to the tournament, Peter Cates, SANFL Inclusive Programs Manager, organised three trial matches. Two trial matches were played against the State Under 18 Team. The third trial match was the Curtain Raiser to the Port Adelaide vs St Kilda game at AAMI Stadium. It was played against the North Eastern Metro Junior Football Under 16 Team. These trial matches were an extremely valuable part of the team preparation, well run and managed. It was an excellent experience for the state players and a well received addition to the preparation. The School Sport Australia Girls Football Championship was held in Canberra, ACT from 23rd to 30th July, 2011. The team consisted of 25 players, Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Team manager and Team Trainer. The tournament went for seven days, including five matches and two rest days. Round 1 WESTERN AUSTRALIA 12.14.86 def SOUTH AUSTRALIA 3.1.19 Round 2 SOUTH AUSTRALIA 12.7.79 def AFL NSW/ACT 1.1.7 Round 3 VICTORIA 18.16.124 def SOUTH AUSTRALIA 0.0.0 Round 4 SOUTH AUSTRALIA 12.13.85 def NORTHERN TERRITORY 2.0.12 Round 5 SOUTH AUSTRALIA 9.12.66 def A.C.T. 3.3.21 The tournament was very exciting for both players and support staff. With three out of five wins, this was a tremendous effort by all of the players. All players represented their state with pride and commitment, and this showed with their continual effort against Victoria and Western Australia, the two teams they lost to. Even though two games were lost, the development of the players continued throughout the tournament, and their dedication was second to none. Congratulations to all players and support staff involved in the tournament, it could not have been the success as it was without everyone's commitment and understanding, and we all are looking forward to next year where players will get the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd. We always knew we would be in for a tough battle against Greenacres and it was definitely that. The weather was ideal for the battle, sun was shining and calm conditions set the scene for a great showdown. We knew we needed to get a good start against Greenies because they are a good side and we needed to try and keep our noses in front right from the start. We got the start we needed but inaccuracy in front of goals cost us and we were lucky that our strong defence held them to only the one point. Second quarter caught us napping and to Greenies credit they capitalised on some silly mistakes and saw us only 4 points apart at the half time break. Mark and I decided that we needed to make a few changes to kick start the girls and we threw the ever reliable Mitzy Galic into the ruck where she dominated the second half setting up numerous opportunities for our running players through the middle of the ground and out on the wings. Having said that the both teams only added one goal each in a tight battle of defences which was a credit to both teams. Luckily for us the last quarter saw us kick away adding 4 - 3 to Greenies solitary goal which was a huge effort by my girls. The week off may have been a contributing factor as my girls had a lot more run in their legs to finish off the game. Eliza “Oatesy” Oates had plenty left in her tank to finish off the game with some classic Oatesy special moves down the wing closely followed by our ever young Mitzy who was clearing the opponents off her heels one by one. Another move we made in the last quarter to mix things up a bit was to throw our half back flanker Jamie Fricker up to the forward flank where she kicked the goal of the year with a ball that changed direction as it hit the ground bouncing through the middle of the sticks. I could go through each and every one of my girls and comment on what a great game they played but footy is a team game and that’s exactly what they did. They played for each other, they played for their club, they played for our players that were injured, they played for the girls that I had to unfortunately drop for the game, they played for our missing skipper Cass Hartley, but most of all they tried to play, and for the most part did, the game we were asking them to play. Oatesy was named best on ground and whilst she did play a great game I’m sure she’s glad everyone received a premiership medal because every Eagle did their part to win this game. I congratulate each and every one of my girls for their efforts in not only this game but all year. We were well lead by our skipper Cass and vice captain Kylie Guarino with Cass unfortunately not being a part of the grand final after jetting off to New York but she was certainly with us every minute of the game being kept updated via text. I also thank Kylie, Oatesy and Lea Fry who stepped up as our on field leaders for the grand final. It may have only been one game girls but it was the most important and you and your team mates certainly knew what had to be done and came to play and it was great that you all took home the cup at the final siren. I’m proud of each and every one of you!! JULES SMITH Coach 28 29 Thank you to our Supporters/Sponsors 30
