MESSAGE FROM
DIRECTOR GENERAL, ASCI
Healthcare is one among India’s largest sector in revenue generation and creation of
employment opportunities and it has witnessed phenomenal growth thanks to heavy
investments both by public and private players. The FDI also has played a crucial role in
catapulting the healthcare sector. IHH; Mylan; Temasek Holdings; CDC a UK based finance
development institution have made huge investments in the Indian healthcare sector.
According to the Frost & Sullivan report, the healthcare sector in India is expected to grow
from 160 billion US dollars to 280 billion US dollars in 2020. The rising incomes of people
and access to high quality healthcare have resulted in increased spending on healthcare. The
growing healthcare sector in India requires able healthcare administrators to deliver timely
and quality services. The effective health care delivery depends considerably on hospital
administration.
ASCI, 17 years ago, responded to this felt need to groom health managers and has been
steadily supplying to the healthcare sector, young managers equipped with the right balance
of knowledge, practical experience, exposure to the best in the industry, required skill set and
attitude. We are proud to say that premier hospitals seek students from PGDHM, ASCI as first
preference. This gives immense confidence to aspiring Healthcare Managers to join ASCI’s
two year course in Hospital Management.

unique feature of this program is the extensive exposure that students get into hospitals in the
government and corporate sector through visits, live projects, case studies and internships.
Hyderabad is uniquely placed with several government and corporate hospitals in the vicinity as well
as numerous initiatives through public private partnerships, which will offer the students rich
exposure to innovative practices in healthcare management. Our students are much sought after by

core hospitals but also healthcare verticals like IT and Insurance. They have been making a mark in the
public and private areas of healthcare.
ASCI SPIRIT
The Spirit of ASCI is to guide students to take up challenging tasks and instill the quality of leadership in
them in order to take up the ever changing demands of the Healthcare industry.
COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM
The students undergo 6 months of practical exposure which is split between 4 months of dissertation and
2 months of summer internship, along with various live projects and workshops. This aids in enhancing
and developing an extensive understanding of the ever changing trends in Healthcare Industry.
Journey of ASCI
Administrative Staff College of India (http://www.asci.org.in) was established in 1956 at the joint
initiative of both the Government of India (GoI) and the industry, as an autonomous, self-supporting,
public-purpose institution, with the objectives of being a think tank for policy inputs and to build the
capacities of practicing professionals in the management of government and business enterprises.
At the apex of its governance structure is a policy-setting, oversight body, the Court of Governors (CoG). It
is a virtual who’s who of eminent professionals, public figures and industry leaders.
ASCI, better known as a college for practising managers and as an Institute of national importance is
contributing immensely to the healthcare sector. Prior to the launch of Centre for Healthcare
Management (CHM), it has provided training and consultancy to various healthcare professionals and
healthcare related projects. The genesis of Centre for Healthcare Management however dates back to
1998 when a two-year Post Graduate programme in Hospital Management was launched at ASCI in
association with Hinduja and Johns Hopkins, USA better known as the Hinduja-Johns Hopkins
programme in Hospital Management.
On recognition by the AICTE, this programme was subsequently rechristened as ASCI, PGDHM in 2005
and currently forms the flagship programme of CHM. With the formation of the CHM, ASCI is now
moving beyond hospitals and looking at the overall healthcare industry. The PGDHM programme is thus
preparing students to take on responsibilities across functions, in hospitals as well as in various areas of
the healthcare sector which have an interface and require a thorough understanding of hospitals like
information technology, health insurance, pharmaceuticals, government and public health, medical
equipment, biotechnology, financial services including being a venture capitalist.
CHM proposes to establish itself as a think-tank of repute in the area of Healthcare Management. It’s
focus is to develop various short duration training programmes, both in-house as well as customised,
undertake applied research and offer advisory services. It is open to collaborations and tie ups with
different international academic and research institutes which would result in knowledge generation and
dissemination

Teaching-Learning Process in the PGDHM Programme
ASCI is a specialized institution with rich experience and acknowledged expertise in management
training and development. The teaching / instructional processes at ASCI are accordingly tuned to
making the class sessions participative, interactive and experiential. The salient aspects in this respect are
described below:
Pedagogy
The pedagogy for the PGDHM programme involves a judicious mix of theoretical inputs, practiceoriented sessions, in-class assignments, exposure visits, case studies and analyses, theme-based group
discussions, simulation exercises, management games, quizzes, role-plays, experience-sharing sessions
and project presentations.
A number of interactive sessions are arranged with senior executives from hospitals and health-care
institutions, so that students are able to relate their learning to real-life scenarios, work-place challenges
and stakeholder expectations, more closely.
Classroom Sessions
ASCI faculty bring into the class room, their rich experience and wealth of expertise accumulated over the
years in delivering the PGDHM programme. Liberal use of audio-visual aids is made. Accordingly,
students find value in the dialogue, discussions, debates and deliberations that take place in the class on a
wide variety of issues and challenges that are of concern to a current day healthcare management
professional. Students therefore find the sessions interesting, interactive, enriching, educative, appealing
and enjoyable.
Exposure Visits
The sessions in the class room are complemented and supplemented by exposure visits that ASCI
organizes for the students. Visits to hospitals (under a unique Know Your Hospital initiative) and healthcare organizations enable the students to understand and appreciate better, the concepts that they have
been exposed to and gain a hands-on feel of the organizational challenges and situations typical of reallife scenarios. Such structured visits are interspersed and woven into the academic schedule.
Programme Special Events
ASCI organises/facilitates various curricular and extra-curricular events such as conferences, workshops,
competitions, management festivals, cultural programmes, get-togethers as well as sporting events for the
students. The College has a laid-down policy of encouraging and offering full financial support to the
students to present papers in prestigious conferences and seminars. There is an active film club too, as a
part of the recreational facilities available.
PLACEMENTS
The Programme has a dedicated Placements Cell with qualified and experienced professionals. The
Placements Cell nurtures excellent corporate relations with a wide network of reputed hospitals and
health-care institutions. Duly leveraging the reputation and standing of ASCI, the high-quality of the
programme as well as the knowledge-base and skill sets that the students would be endowed with at
the end of the two-year programme, the Placements Cell provides extensive assistance to students to
explore a variety of career options.
The Placement Committee formed by a cross-section of students plays an important role in all the above
activities.
The Placement Cell is involved in helping the Programme achieve successful:
M
M
M
M
Placements for summer projects (8 weeks) after the second semester.
Placements for internship after third semester (16 weeks).
Final placements for the outgoing students through on-campus and other initiatives.
The Placement Cell organises the “Campus Placements” initiative at the end of the third semester. A
large number of hospitals, healthcare consultancies, insurance companies, healthcare verticals of IT
companies and various other renowned healthcare organizations visit the campus and conduct
selection processes, providing promising career opportunities to the students.
The Programme Director, and Faculty associated with the programme mentor the students throughout the
two-year duration. The Programme Team helps the students leverage their strengths and opportunities
and overcome their weaknesses. The Team thus contributes significantly to the enhancement of the
capacities of the students. As a result, ASCI has an excellent track record year-after-year, in placing all its
students with leading organizations in healthcare sector.
Organizations where ASCI alumni are making a mark include Apollo Hospitals, Max Super-specialty,

comparable to the best in the industry.
Sports & Games
It is important that the activeness and fitness of the students is maintained throughout the duration of the
PGDHM programme. Accordingly, a series of sports and games activities are available for the students.
Competitions are held every year. Students are strongly encouraged to take part in a variety of sporting
events like swimming, billiards, chess, tennis, table tennis, badminton, caroms, croquet etc. available at
ASCI. Students are also encouraged to use the on-campus gym facilities.
Alumni
The Programme, over the years, has built a strong network of alumni who are in senior positions of
significant responsibility in various organizations of repute across the globe. ASCI organizes Alumni Meet
every year, which witnesses participation in large numbers. The Meet offers an ideal platform for all the
graduates of the Programme to converge and connect with each other. Alumni are also invited to the
College regularly to share their achievements, experiences and success stories with the students.
Daily Schedule
The Programme is truly enriching with a lot of learning opportunities. The daylong schedule typically
begins at 0900 hrs and goes on up to 1730 hrs. The Programme is therefore rigorous in terms of schedule.
Accordingly, students are expected to put in long hours of work.
To highlight, the salient aspects of the Programme schedule are:
(a) Exposure visits, tests, quizzes, theme-based group discussions, sharing of experiences by
students, participative & interactive learning sessions, group-work exercises, case study
illustrations & analyses, role-plays, management simulation games, practical exercise sessions,
special lectures, project report presentations etc. interspersed during the teaching modules so as
to break the monotony and make the Programme more interesting, demanding and exciting.
(b) Inter-disciplinary themes and sessions span across and/or figure in more than one module/week,
depending on the exact timetable that would be drawn up.
(c) Feedback on the programme and administrative facilities are obtained from the students at
periodic intervals.
ASCI-PGDHM is thus a Hospital & Healthcare Management Programme with a difference.
While hospitals are at the core, the Programme also looks at associated sectors which have a
direct interface with the healthcare industry such as information technology, insurance,
pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The Programme prepares the students to shoulder crossfunctional responsibilities in hospitals and thus aims at producing high quality managers for the
healthcare sector. Graduates of the Programme emerge not merely as hospital administrators but
as leaders who can think critically and generate new ideas for improved efficiency and
effectiveness in healthcare delivery. This is because the Programme offers a unique blend of
operational and strategic inputs, coupled with inter-disciplinary perspectives and applicationoriented methodologies. In addition to the core curriculum, a host of value-adding activities and
events broaden the perspectives of the students. Centrally-located, well-equipped and
picturesque campus provides the perfect environment for fun-filled learning. A complement of
competent and experienced faculty provides industry-oriented inputs and experiential insights
into the curriculum. In essence, students find themselves well-prepared to excel and make a
mark, as they step into the industry.
Evaluation Process
Keeping in view the importance and objectives envisaged of the Programme as well as its academic
rigor, students are evaluated at regular intervals. Comprehension of the students in the courses and
capsules is graded using different measurement tools such as assignments, case study presentations,
mini-projects, mid-term and end-term examinations. Summer projects and internships are evaluated
through performance reports from external guides (from the respective organisations where the
students intern) and dissertation reports along with presentations, evaluated by industry experts.
Award of Diploma
The AICTE-approved Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Hospital Management) would be
awarded to students successfully completing the Programme as per prescribed criteria.
