IMG BASEBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/baseball-academy 05 Former MLB coach brings wealth of experience and knowledge to IMG Baseball Academy ken ek bobl aseball img ector academy dir t n e tal building He had already put in 13 or 14 hours that day, and the sun was quickly dipping below the landscape. Exhausted and hungry, Ken Bolek was ready to close his office for the day when he heard the steady pinging sound of an aluminum bat coming from the batting cage outside of his office. Bolek glanced out and saw an IMG Baseball Academy student-athlete who, not quite content with his day’s worth of training, snuck back to the practice area to get in just a few more swings before the day ended. “I shut the lights off in my office, went to the cage and talked to the player for a few minutes,” Bolek said. “By the time I got to my car, it was dark. That’s why I stay here. “I want to be in an atmosphere where every single day you see people giving 100 percent.” As the IMG Baseball Academy Director since 1995, Bolek has pushed the program to the elite level, while producing countless Division-I recruits and Major League Baseball-caliber talent. Bolek relies on more than 30 years of coaching experience at literally every level from high school to the minor leagues to a stint as a coach of the Cleveland Indians. 06 IMG BASEBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/baseball-academy Despite all of the awards and accolades, which include a National Championship ring from his playing days at the University of Arizona, one would never know of his history filled with valuable memories. His office has no framed photos of him with famous former players. His house has no trophies – not from baseball or his prep days playing football, for which he almost accepted a scholarship to Princeton. “To draw attention to myself is not my thing,” he said. “I’m proud of my players’ accomplishments – extremely proud – but I never consciously dwell on my impact on that person.” Tyler Pastornicky, an IMG Baseball Academy alum who is tabbed as the Atlanta Braves starting shortstop for 2012, can attest to Bolek and the IMG Baseball Academy’s importance to a player’s development. “Ken’s a great coach and an awesome guy,” said Pastornicky, who spent four years at IMG Academies. “He definitely knows what he’s talking about. At IMG, you’re there to get better, and it’s all on you. You have all the tools to get better, you just have to use them.” “The development of a coach is the same as a player; If I’m not better this year than last year, I would take issue with that” Growing up in Ohio, Bolek turned down a minor-league offer after graduating from high school to attend Arizona. After college, he spent a short time in the Minor Leagues. That period, he later realized, helped him learn what role a coach can serve. “There wasn’t a whole lot of mentoring or coaching going on,” he said. “I think that at some point if I would’ve had some different type of guidance in how to prepare for the pros, maybe things would’ve turned out different.” After stopping his playing days, Bolek received a coveted grad assistant role at Mississippi State University, which began a circuitous coaching route through the minors to the Cleveland Indians and, eventually, to the IMG Baseball Academy. At IMG, Bolek has ingrained into the program the key values – traits like dedication, fortitude and passion – that help a person not only on the diamond, but throughout life. For Bolek, who has coached players like Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton and Sandy Alomar in the professional ranks, the week-to-week and year-to-year challenge keeps his competitive drive high. And after all these years, he still pushes himself to learn more as a coach and leader. “The development of a coach is the same as a player,” Bolek said. “If I’m not better this year than last year, I would take issue with that. A coach’s personal development is not unlike that of a player. Know your strengths and weaknesses while committing effort to reaching higher goals. Satisfaction alone sets your ceiling.” IMG BASEBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/baseball-academy 07 COACHES and STAFF Ken Bolek Director Dave Shepard Junior Varsity Assistant Coach / Pitching Instructor Kit Carlson Student-Athlete Advisor Jason Elias Varsity Assistant Coach/ Pitching Instructor Varsity Head Coach/Outfield Instructor Pete Paciorek Andy Stewart Post Graduate Head Coach / Catching Instructor Eddie James Student-Athlete Advisor Mario Jimenez Steve Frey 15U Head Coach / Camp Director Junior Varsity Head Coach / Infield Instructor Tony Ferreira Edgar Caceres Pitching Instructor Infield Instructor Kyle Cancellieri Sport Advisor Nick Phelps Business Manager e c n a m r o perf f staf Steve Shenbaum Communications Training David DaSilva Phil Wallin Blaine Bott Performance Coach Performance Coach Abbie Wonnell Athletic Trainer Josh Lifrak Mental Conditioning Vision Training Stephanie Wilson Head of Nutrition ur o o t u o y Thank s r o s Spon Premier Sponsors Official Performance Apparel and Footwear Sponsor Elite Sponsors Official Sports Nutrition Sponsor Official Athletic Recruiting Sponsor Performance Sponsors Official Training Accessory Equipment Sponsor Official Acceleration Training Equipment Sponsor Official Suspension Training Equipment Sponsor Official Mouth Guard Supplier Official Paint Supplier Product Suppliers Official Myofacial Product Supplier r o i sen t igh l t o sp ielder senior outf alfredo escalera As a 14-year-old on the IMG Baseball Academy junior varsity team in 2009, Alfredo Escalera had a literal front-row seat to near perfection. Escalera would sit in the bleachers whenever possible and watch the IMG Baseball Academy varsity team that went 31-1 and featured J.R. Murphy, who would later become a 2nd-round draft pick by the New York Yankees. Now it’s Escalera’s turn in the spotlight. “They were impressive, but I think we can match that,” he says. “With J.R., he took the game very seriously. He was nice to everyone, but you could see that he was out there to take care of business and do anything he could to help his team win games. I like that approach.” At nine years old, Escalera first attended an IMG Baseball Academy camp. At 13, his parents and sister moved from Puerto Rico to Florida for Escalera to enroll as an Academy studentathlete. Now as a 16-year-old senior (he enrolled in pre-Kindergarten early), Escalera is one of the nation’s premier outfielders and a Stetson University commit. 10 IMG BASEBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/baseball-academy “Back home, I was practicing maybe two times a week,” he says. “We made a big decision to come here, and it has paid off.” And if he needs any advice on the game, Escalera doesn’t have to look far. Two of his uncles are former MLB players and New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is a close family friend. Says Escalera: “Every time (Mariano) goes back to Puerto Rico, I sit down and talk with him. I have a ton of autographs. We talk personal stuff, not even baseball. He just tells me to have fun with the game right now.” And Escalera is doing exactly that. senior showdown Baseball is a sport rich in tradition with a new wave of advanced metrics and measurements. So who is Chris Perez? Read on… emies: d at IMG Acad rne …what he lea Honestly, it got me ready for college and pro ball because it’s every day. The normal high school baseball season is just in the spring. IMG got me on the schedule where it’s school and baseball every day, so you had to be committed. I already knew what to expect and wasn’t overwhelmed once I got to college and the pros. You get what you put in. I was always focused on the bigger picture, and I took advantage of what IMG had to offer. I did the physical conditioning the right way, I focused on my grades and it paid off. 12 IMG BASEBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/baseball-academy en Bolek: my Director K ll Acade …IMG Baseba I probably owe my whole career to Kenny. He’s known me since I was 10. I used to be a catcher and I was pretty good, but I was pitching too. Kenny told me that I had to pick one. I told him that I wanted to do both. He told me that to be successful, I had to pick one. He told me that I had a bigger future on the mound than in catching, and I trusted his opinion. He pushed me to reach my potential. B save: …his first ML It was August ’08 when I was with the Cardinals. I was in the minors on the day before. I came in during the 8th inning and got a five-out save. There were guys on first and second, and we were up two. I came in and faced Jeff Kent, who was one of the top hitters in the game at that time. I struck him out. In the 9th, I came out and immediately walked the first guy on four straight balls, but recovered and got the save. r 100 mph: …his quest fo age”: name “Pure R …on the nick I got it from a former teammate, Chris Gimenez. There are a lot of worse nicknames in my profession. It has a little bit of an aura. It’s just how I act on the mound. I’m intense and hate to lose. …the pressure I was clocked at 99 once during a triple-A game in 2008. That’s about the hardest I can go. My pitches have more movement when I don’t top out. I just remember to breathe and execute. When the crowd’s all fired up and the entrance music comes on, I don’t let it overtake me. I slow my breathing and let my ability take over instead of the adrenaline. With closing, you either love it or hate it. You have to embrace it or run from it. If I don’t have a good game, we usually end up losing, which is a terrible feeling, so that drives me. My goal coming in to every year is to stay healthy and make all of my appearances. Selfishly, my other goal is not to blow any saves. Trying to get a certain number of saves all depends on my team. If my teams scores a lot of runs, I may not get a save opportunity but we’re winning, so I’m happy. (The single-season record of) 62 is a crazy number. I don’t want to say it’s untouchable, but 62 is like a whole season of appearances, let alone saves. und: o state on the m …his mental The big thing for me is just having selfconfidence and that no matter what the mess is, if I make my pitches, I can get out of it. I’ve learned to eliminate even the last pitch and not think about it again. It doesn’t matter if you pitch 20 times in a row without giving up a run, you have to forget it. It matters what you do now. You’re always one pitch away, no matter the situation. nks: …bullpen pra I’ve been in some pretty tame bullpens. The pranks and stuff are reserved for veterans. They have clout and don’t really care what the manager says. It’s a lot of story-telling and getting to know the guys well. The biggest one that we do now is between innings, we warm up the outfielders on our team. Around the 7th inning or so when the other team is in the field, we’ll rush the rookies out there like our team is in the field and they need to warm up the outfielders, then laugh at them when they run onto the field.
