3rd Annual Subaru Challenge Road Rally
June 7, 2008
Our annual Subaru Challenge Road Rally sponsored by Subaru of Beechmont proved to
be another exciting driving event on a totally new road course for 2008. Once we traveled far
enough from Cincinnati and into the countryside the roads became very interesting. One road,
a little over 5 miles long, was nothing but turn after turn with a few small hills thrown in for
good measure. Stops during the day included Ulysses Grant’s birthplace and a visit to Meldahl
Dam on the Ohio River.
Subarus are pretty neat
little Japanese cars that
run and handle like a top
notch
German
racing
machine. We have several
“regulars” at our rallies that
drive Subarus and they
just can’t say enough
about the performance and
handling of these highly
engineered
vehicles.
Subaru
of
Beechmont
mentioned that they would
like to do the road rally
again next year and plan
to put a little more effort
into attracting a good size
crowd for the event.
We would like to thank Subaru of Beechmont for supplying some really great prizes for the
event. The $500, $300, and $200 prizes for 1st, 2nd $ 3rd Places are by far the nicest prizes
handed out during the entire rally season. Thanks Subaru!
We would also like to thank our Support Team Scott and Nancy Snyder for their help with
scoring at the end of the rally. If not for the superior help of our Support Teams, these road
rallies would be a real challenge to conduct. Thanks Scott & Nancy!
Congratulations to the winners, James & Esther
couples have been attending our rallies over the
Porsches. When they pulled into the dealership that
vast experience from past rallies, that they would be

Hopgood and Sam & Tira Rogers. Both
past 3 years driving their Subarus and
morning in Jim’s WRX, I knew with their

Rose Chevrolet/Corvettes of Hamilton
Road Rally, June 28, 2008
The Corvettes of Hamilton car club returned for the 2008 road rally season with another impressive display of horsepower and high quality Corvettes for a romp on the back country
roads of Butler and Preble Counties. With Corvettes ranging from a Robert & Joanne Streine’s
fully restored 1960 Corvette to John & Patti Bacca’s ground pounding 2008 Z06, we had a
really nice assortment of Corvettes for the rally.
The day started out with a light rain shower as the teams left Rentschler Park, but soon
after the skies cleared for a beautiful day of driving fun. The 75 mile road course included a
stop at the Chrisholm Historic Farmstead which dates back to the 1820’s. The teams were
treated to a tour of the house and grounds situated in a remote area of Butler County. The
teams also visited 2 covered bridges including the the double-barreled Roberts Covered Bridge
built in 1829. We had the good fortune to drive over 5 Steel Truss Bridges including the infamous and legendary “Screaming Bridge” located in Preble County!
We would like to thank Rose Chevrolet
for donating the prizes for the event and
the Corvettes of Hamilton car club for
sponsoring the road rally which drew teams
from as far away as Indianapolis. Special
thanks goes out to our Support Teams, Bob
Piper and Sam Sunberg who did a great
job with scoring the teams as they arrived
back at the finish line.
Congratulations to Ted & Anita Sewall
who drove a beautiful 2008 Corvette Z06 to
the Winners Circle! Ted & Anita have participated in a couple of road rallies in the
past and their experience paid off this time
around. Nice job Ted & Anita!

Zimmer Jeep/Malachi’s Trap All Jeep
Road Rally, July 13, 2008
Our 4 X 4 Road Rallies
are
always
the
most
exciting events scheduled
throughout the season and
this road rally was a bit
more exciting than usual.
Sponsored by Zimmer Jeep
in Florence Kentucky, we
had a total of 61 Jeeps
registered for the day.
As always, Bev and I
ran the road course the
day before the event just to
make
sure
that
there
wouldn’t be any problems in
the morning. Unfortunately,
we received just enough
rain later that evening to
soften up the ground but
thankfully not enough to
raise the streams.
The entrance to stream crossing # 1 turned from a dirt road to a mud pit for Sunday
morning. Nothing drastic, but enough to get everyones attention. Stream crossing # 2 was a
totally different story. To exit this crossing you need to climb a small hill covered in weeds and
brush. With the previous rainfall still lingering on the vegetation, the hill climb turned into a
major winching operation for the Terrain Stompers Jeep Club which provided the Security Detail
at the crossings. The first few Jeeps made it up the hill without too much trouble but the trail
quickly turned into a slippery mess where no one could make it out of the crossing without the
help of the Terrain Stompers. After about 5 Jeeps were pulled up the hill, we made the decision to close down the crossing and bypass this area.
At this point I would like to say “THANKS” to the Terrains Stompers Jeep Club who took
control of the problem and turned, what could have been a very bad situation, into a safe
crossing until help could arrive. Special thanks goes out to our Security Detail that day from
the Terrain Stompers Jeep Club: Mike Grubbs, Cody Livesay, Mike & Kristin Truett, Scott
Hanna, Matt Williams, Ian Mullane, Tim Burke & Danny Beach. If you are looking for a good
group of responsible guys to go fourwheeling with, I highly recommend that you contact them
with your interest. Their website is www.TERRAINSTOMPERS.com.
After we got the situation at stream crossing # 2 under control. everything went back to
normal with Jeeps splashing thru the stream crossings and Turtles being saved from destruction
along the course. Even with the rain, the crossings were about 6 inches below normal, but still
deep enough to have some fun and stall a Jeep or two.
We would like to thank Zimmer Jeep of Florence, Kentucky for sponsoring this all Jeep
event. Special thanks to our Support Teams: Tony & Amy Agoston and John & Cathy Zimmer
for all of their help with scoring the teams after the road rally. Thanks everyone!
Congratulations to Stephen & Rachel Varga for their 1st Place finish in the Zimmer Jeep/
Malachi’s Trap All Jeep Road Rally! Stephen & Rachel have been competing in the four wheel
drive road rallies for about 3 years now and obviously have it down to a science on how to
outwit the 50+ teams on the road course. Nice job Stephen & Rachel!

Porsches 2 Oxford Road Rally, July 27, 2008
What could be better than taking a Porsche out for a drive on back country roads? Taking
18 Porsches out for a drive on back country roads! I really enjoy this particular road rally,
watching the owners of these fine German road machines play on the rural roads of Ohio and
Indiana. This year the teams were treated to
the historic Black Covered Bridge, a steel
pony truss bridge, two historic churches and
more corn than the eye could count!
Special thanks to Brice Kadel of the MidOhio Region of the Porsche Club of America
for sponsoring the event. Also a big thanks
to Diana Durr of the Oxford Visitors Bureau
for all of the great help she gave us in
making this event such a success.
Congratulations to David & Marsha
Hayden for taking 1st Place in the Porsches
2 Oxford Road Rally! David & Marsha drove

Land Rover Cincinnati Adventure Road Rally
August 3, 2008
Although Land Rovers may not be the most popular four wheel drive vehicles on the road,
they are a very formidable opponent when taken off road against the Jeep aficionados. Land
Rover Cincinnati sponsored this event which featured 5 beautiful stream crossings on the
remote Indiana back roads. Although the streams were about 12” below normal, it was still a
fun drive that proved to be somewhat of a challenge for a few teams trying to make their way
up the hill from Malachi’s Trap. Excellent weather and no major issues at the stream crossings,
made for a perfect day for driving Land Rovers.
We would like to thank Land Rover
Cincinnati for sponsoring this event and a
special “Thanks” to Katy Goetzel for her
dedication into making this event a success!
We would also like to thank the Terrain
Stompers Jeep Club for providing the
Security Detail at 3 of the stream crossings.
Congratulations to Mark & Laurie Kyle
and Mike Connolly for their 1st Place finish
in the Land Rover Cincinnati Adventure
Road Rally with their 2008 Range Rover
Sport! Mark, Laurie & Mike have participated
in one of our four wheel drive events in the

Vevay Swiss Wine Festival Road Rally
August 23, 2008
Small town festivals are a great way to spend a summer evening especially when the festival is located along the Ohio River where a cool breeze always seems to be blowing through
your hair. This was the 3rd year that the Vevay Swiss Wine Festival sponsored a road rally
and just like the previous years, the weather was perfect and the roads were great!
Teams traveled from as far as Illinois & Michigan to attend this annual road rally held in the
heart of some of the most beautiful country in southern Indiana. Aside from the exciting roads
and tremendous scenery, the teams viewed the Schenck Mansion; the original Switzerland
County Jail; the Markland Dam & Locks; the only location in Indiana where you can look north
across the Ohio River into Kentucky and a
chance to see an usual 6 room outhouse!
Congratulations to Jim & Sharon Stoops
who drove a beautiful 2007 Pontiac Solstice
to the winners circle! Jim & Sharon have
attended many of our rallies and have a
pretty good understanding of what it takes
to pull off a 1st Place finish. Nice job Jim
& Sharon!
We would like to thank the Vevay Swiss
Wine Festival Committee for sponsoring this
annual event and a big thanks to the Belterra Casino for supplying prizes to the top
4 teams.
