Developed by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, this designation relies on objective, rigorous, nationally consistent clinical quality measures and affordability criteria. At the core of the Blue Distinction Center program, facilities are recognized for their distinguished care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery or transplants. The Blue Distinction Center program includes two designations: one that indicates a focus on quality (Blue Distinction Centers) and one that indicates a focus on quality in addition to cost efficiency in the delivery of specialty care (Blue Distinction Centers+).
