The Waupun High School class of 1949 recently celebrated their 65th class reunion at
the Rock River Country Club. The “49'ers” have tentatively decided to hold their 67th
reunion on the third Saturday in August 2016 at the Country Club. Gordon and Sally
Sharbuno volunteered to serve on the committee. Mike Stoffel will update the annual
address booklet and John Williamson will serve as the class treasurer. Classmates chose
to continue the Friday Night Fish Fry and the Saturday noon luncheon for the 2016
event which will mark the 15th time the class has celebrated the graduation of the WHS

100 YEARS OF 4-H IN WISCONSIN
We are celebrating 100 years of empowering youth to reach their full potential, working
and learning in partnership with caring adults. Serving both Urban and rural communities, we
are helping young people to learn about leadership, citizenship and life skills while having fun,
exploring and discovering.
The members of 4-H are boys and girls from 5 to 18 years old. All the members have the
opportunity to pursue their own interest with projects that include from photography to
rocketry, from robotics to animal science, all programs encourage youth to learn by doing. They
have amazing opportunities to travel to: summer camps, field trips, state fair, State and
National Youth Conferences, etc. To be leaders: being actively involved in the decision-making
of their clubs, helping and teaching other members, etc. To be active citizens: taking part of
community service and other activities that allows them to improve as a community. All this to
support the essential elements of positive youth development: Belonging, Mastery, Generosity
and Independence.
Did you know people like: Reggie White, Johnny Cash, Julia Roberts, Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis, just to mention a few, were members of 4-H?

School for AGricultural & Environmental Studies’ (SAGES’)
CommUNITY Night: Celebrating People and Partnerships
Essential to the School’s Success
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Featuring Exploration & Edu-tainment for Everyone -To kick-off the 2014-2015 school year, students at the School for Agricultural and
Environmental Studies (SAGES), a public charter school in Fox Lake, Wisconsin,
engaged in conversations about community and what they valued for their school
community and their learning. To extend their thinking beyond the school walls, guest
speakers from the Fox Lake Historical Society were invited to share local history on
people and places within the community, which enticed students to want to know more.
As a culmination of those discussions and discoveries, plus the completion of an allschool “Letterboxing Project,” SAGES’ will host their “CommUNITY Night” on
Thursday, October 9.
“It has been thrilling to hear students sharing what they discovered about our community
and adventures they have had searching for their first letterbox, Fox Lake Welcomes
You!” explained Sheri Hicken, SAGES’ Agricultural Educator. “I became aware of
Letterboxing from a social studies instructor I had in school and knew this outdoor hobby
would be a wonderful fit for our learners.” As defined by AtlasQuest.com, a Letterboxing
Community, “Letterboxing combines artistic ability with ‘treasure-hunts’ in parks,
forests, and cities around the world. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by cracking
codes and following clues.” Each class at SAGES from kindergarten through seventh
grade was assigned a location where they will plant a letterbox. The public unveiling of
their efforts including research, interviews, and development of clues will occur as a part
of the school’s CommUNITY Night event.
Beyond exploring local letterboxes, CommUNITY Night guests can participate in an
array of additional Edu-tainment. Students will be conducting project presentations and
technology demonstrations, as well as collecting survey information from potential
volunteers or school supporters. Workshops featuring topics such as “Healthy,
Homemade Meals & Snacks” and “Social Media: Protecting Your Identity” will be
conducted by the UW-Extension Nutrition Education Program for Columbia/Dodge
Counties and Farmers State Bank respectively. Families can stop by the outdoor
classroom to “read on a rock,” fall-themed books from the Fox Lake Public Library and
build a scarecrow together to be included in SAGES’ entry for the Fox Lake Fall
“Spooktacular” Event Scarecrow Competition happening later this month. Plus, the
school will be open for self-guided tours and a handful of area businesses, such as
Brook’s Nook restaurant, Jonas Apple Orchard, Alsum Farms & Produce, Del Monte
Foods, Hoekstra’s Market & Greenhouse, and State Street Pizza will offer samples of
“Local Flavors” such as purple potatoes and pizza to salsa and pulled pork sliders in the
school’s lunchroom.
Running from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the event is open to SAGES’ families, as well as the
general public. “We welcome everyone throughout this and surrounding communities to
join us and genuinely look forward to forging further partnerships with locals who wish
to share an expertise, their time, talent, or resources with our students and staff,” notes
Nick Vertz, Principal. “Each person, business, or organization plays an essential role in
the success of our school and students.”
Also in conjunction with SAGES’ CommUNITY Night, bicycles of various sizes will be
given away. Donations will be accepted and then used for Physical Education equipment
at the school.

Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week set for Oct. 5-11
The Wisconsin Association of School Boards has set Oct. 5-11 as Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week as a time to build
awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our communities. The Waupun Area School
District is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week to honor local
board members for their commitment to the Waupun area and its children.
“It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are
helping every child learn at a higher level,” Dr. Tonya Gubin said. “They make the tough decisions every month and spend many
hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.”
Gubin said the key work of school boards is to raise student achievement by:
Creating a vision for what the community wants the school district to be and for making student achievement the top

priority;

Establishing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to do;
Ensuring progress is measured to be sure the district’s goals are achieved and students are learning at expected

levels;

Being accountable for their decisions and actions by continually tracking and reporting results;

Creating a safe, orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach;

Forming partnerships with others in the community to solve common problems; and
Focusing attention on the need for continuous improvement by questioning, refining and revising issues related to

student achievement.

special effort to show our appreciation in October, their contribution is a year-round commitment.”
