Program Code: NAT 01 Seasons Available: Year-Round Scheduled Outings: By request Price: USD 976 p.p. (2 people minimum) Program Difficulty: Easy Program’s Focus: Flora & Fauna sightings Main Attractions - Northern Patagonian Temperate Rain Forest - Native Flora & Fauna Sightings - Expert Guide - Nothofagus Hotel & Spa Brief Itinerary Day 1: Transportation to the hotel, visit to the Huilo waterfall, welcoming dinner and a review of the itinerary. Day 2: Trip to flora and fauna observatories through route ‘los hongos’ (the fungi) or Briófitas (bryophytes) Day 3: Botanical trail and the ‘Cua Cua’ river wetlands Day 4: Transportation back to the airport. Day 2: Pilmaiquén Grasslands and the Fungus or Bryophyte Route. Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile After having breakfast, our voyage begins. We’ll dedicate our morning to discovering the amazingly diverse flora and fauna the Biological Reserve offers. We’ll go to the ‘Los Patos’ (The Ducks) lagoon on 4x4s, found in the Pilmaiquén grasslands, and after a 15-minute walk we’ll arrive at a fauna-sighting tower, a fantastic way to witness all the species that make this lagoon their home. Since the lagoon forms from rainwater during the rainy season, it tends to dry during the summer, showing changes in temperature that create an abundant amount of food for nesting birds of the area. After 45 minutes we’ll make our way to a second tower, which is located in front of the Guanacos sector, an ideal place to view the great variety of species of the area. After 30 minutes of observation, we’ll make our way to the Rio Blanco base camp (which has restrooms available) to enjoy a variety of barbequed meats, a salad buffet accompanied with a great selection of Chilean red wines. Once we’ve had lunch, and perhaps a nice siesta on hammocks at the beach, we’ll begin our descent by vehicle towards our day’s last activity: The Fungi Route. A spyglass and a manual will be provided during our activity and our expert guide will teach us how to identify the different species that thrive in this Patagonian Temperate Rainforest. Afterwards we’ll head back to the hotel for a nice dinner and the comfortable accommodations of the Nothofagus Hotel & Spa. Day 3: Botanical trail and Cua Cua River Wetlands Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile After breakfast we’ll venture towards the Portal Huilo Huilo to begin our slope-less trek. Despite the trail’s lack of changing elevation, it showcases several contrasting and beautiful sights. During our easy paced trek, which lasts approximately 3 hours, our expert guide will accompany us through the trail giving us the most relevant and interesting anecdotes of each specie that reside in the riverbanks south of the Río Fuy. We’ll then arrive at a curious little lagoon and make our return through the area’s grasslands, which have a beautiful view of the Mocho-Choshuenco volcanic compound. We’ll return to the Hotel for lunch and in the afternoon will go on the last adventure of the Wildlife Safari. We’ll go on a soft Off Road excursion on 4x4s and explore the wetlands of the Cua Cua River, witnessing a surprising diversity of birds, from a great variety of different duck species to the native black neck swan. In some selected areas we’ll go on short walks through parallel trails and finish the excursion back on vehicle. We’ll arrive at the Quilmio Bridge to enjoy some coffee/tea/yerba matte/hot chocolate and then return to the hotel. We’ll then enjoy our last meal together, share the photos and videos from our adventures and enjoy our last night in the Reserve. Itinerary Modifications The climate in Chilean Patagonia tends to be erratic and changing, even more so in areas bordering the mountain range, where the Biological Reserve is located. In case that the climate, or other exterior factor, forces us to change the itinerary of all programs, the company reserves the right to change the activities without a discount or additional cost. We have several other activities to offer if such events do occur. This way we make sure that you get the most out of your stay here in the reserve. Transport All transportation specified in the program is done on 4x4 Jeeps and Pick-Up Trucks, each one with room for 6 people: 4 passengers, a guide and a driver. All our vehicles are equipped and prepared to fulfill our itinerary in the safest manner. Climate The Patagonian Temperate Rainforest is located in Chilean territory, between 38°30'S and 55°30'S latitudes, east of the Andes Mountain range. It’s known for its abundance of precipitation year-round and for its temperate summers (reaching 30°C.) This rainy climate is due to the humidity that charges the anticyclonic wind from the South Pacific, which then condenses due to the cold coastal current of Humboldt. When it enters the continent the humidity precipitates until it reaches the Andes, where it dissipates as it collides with the dry winds that come from the Argentinian Patagonia. Physical Demands The programs offered at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve demand a relative amount of physical effort. The program “Wildlife Safari” is of low physical demands. The trekking portion is relatively short and of low difficulty since the terrain is in good conditions. Like all programs of varied activity, this program requires a healthy physical disposition. If you have a special condition or some impairment that might impede you from joining us on the program, please consult with our staff before making your reservation in order to avoid future inconveniences. Don’t Forget! It’s very important to come prepared for both summer and winter on all trips. You should bring (for the Wildlife Safari) a comfortable backpack for traveling, trekking shoes or comfortable walking shoes, a windbreaker, a parka, comfortable pants for walking, a swimming suit, a camera, a flashlight, sunblock, sunglasses, a change of clothes in case of rain, and a hat to protect you from the sun. It’s also important to bring cash in case you would like to buy some souvenirs. A lot of the services offered at the Hotel have a system that works with credit/debit cards, however there are no ATMs to withdraw money from, so makes sure to bring some cash in case you want to shop at a local artisanal store.
