Dear Friends:
On behalf of my colleagues, I wish to extend my warmest
welcome to our 27th annual celebration of the National Asian
Pacific American Heritage Month. Nearly three decades ago,
my colleagues and I decided that we needed to form an
organization to share our Asian culture with the public to foster
better understanding and friendship.
Like millions of others who left their homeland to migrate to
America, the first Asian and Pacific Islanders who arrived in
the United States in the 19th century were seeking better lives
from the ones they left behind. They possessed rich cultures,
ancient heritages and beliefs that with hard work they would
realize their share of the American dream, which strengthened
them all.
Kimi J. Springsteen,Ph.D
Founding Chair
Asian American Coalition
of Florida
As we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month today,
we honor all of those who have dedicated their lives to making
our American Dream possible. We are grateful to those who
serve, and to those who have sacrificed their lives to protect
us and give us the peaceful, daily lives we enjoy in this
GREAT NATION!
Greetings everyone!
I welcome you all to the 27th Annual Asian-Pacific American
Heritage month and AsiaFest 2010. We hope that you will all
enjoy what we have prepared for you at AsiaFest this year.
It is our hope that AsiaFest 2010 will continue to preserve the
Asian-American Heritage in the Tampa Bay area for future
generations. The goal of the Asian-American Coalition of Florida
is to teach, educate, and showcase the public the diversity,
richness and beauty of Asian cultures though food, dance, music
and crafts.

People of Asian origin are the fastest growing segment in the
American society today, yet many people are not familiar with
the differences among the cultures. We hope that AsiaFest 2010
will widen your horizon and entertain you at the same time. The
success of this festival depends on the tremendous cooperation
between the many volunteers and communities in the Tampa Bay
area.
My sincere gratitude to all the committees and its members, who
have worked diligently to make this event a success. My thanks
also go to all the vendors, sponsors, performers, and most of all
to you, the public! Your coming to the event not only makes the
event successful but helps all of us celebrate the Asian-American
Heritage month more meaningful.
Once again, welcome and enjoy AsiaFest 2010!

Congratulations again on another exciting year of celebrating our
Asian American heritage. The year has started with much excitement
and I commend all those who have worked on the 2010 Census. We
all know this is very important for us Asian American and Pacific
Islanders to be counted. The Philippines has also started the year
with the exciting news that our Philippine Performing Arts Company
(PPAC) for the third consecutive year has won First Place at the Fifth
Annual World Culture Folk Dance Competition at the Azalea
International Folk Fair last March 6, 2010 in Valdosta, Georgia. We
are so proud of them and congratulate all the participants.

Hillsborough County is always proud to be a sponsor of Asia Fest,
where we celebrate the heritage of Asian Pacific Americans in our
diverse community. It is this diversity that strengthens the fabric of
our community and makes Hillsborough County a great place to live,
work and play.
We hope you take advantage of the two special events in May, Asian
Pacific Heritage Month, that bring our community together:
Ken Hagan
Chairman,
Board of County
Commissioners
During Asia Fest, witness the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Races, which
create awareness of our waterfront opportunities. Any proceeds from
the Dragon Boat Races will benefit the FACTors Breast Cancer Patient
Support Program at Moffitt Cancer Center and the Florida Aquarium.
Second, take part in the Hillsborough County Public Library
Cooperative’s second The Big Read, which inspires people across the
country to pick up a good book and read a common title. This year’s
book is the novel, The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan.
Tan will be make a brief appearance at the Big Read Tampa Kick Off
Sat., May 1 at 4 p.m. at the John F. Germany Public Library. Tan will
also headline a program on Sun. May 2, at 1 p.m. at the Straz Center
for the Performing Arts that will include a discussion and book signing.
But as you celebrate Asia Fest, enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes
from the many Asian countries that have had a positive impact on
