Many of you have said that they haven’t read them. New comers and existing residents alike seem to be unaware of the bylaws and control committee rules. These rules were set up so that our community would look beautiful to anyone who comes to either visit or buy. The control committee was set up to make sure if something was done to the outside of your home it was within the guidelines of the association. A request should be written up with what you are planning to do and given to the Community Manager (Scott) before the work is started. He will forward it to the control committee who will then check it out and give their approval as long as it doesn’t violate the association rules. A good suggestion is that if you are not sure call the office and see if you need a request. There have been a few instances where someone did the work without handing in a request and they had to change it which cost the resident more money. Both the control committee and the trustees try to work with you as best as they can. We all came to Lions Head North knowing that there were some rules that had to be followed and everyone agreed to them. Lions Head North is one of the few adult communities that will let you do almost anything you want within reason. Atlantic City Trip THE ATLANTIC CITY TRIP WILL BE OCTOBER 25, 2016 TO RESORTS. After the September 22nd and fall was officially here. After the hot summer weather, we had, I think we all will appreciate the cooler weather to come. I know our pool regulars were disappointed that we couldn’t keep the pool open for just one more week, but as you know, our contract ended on Labor Day. So, no contract, no lifeguard, no pool. I believe this year, more residents enjoyed our pool more than any previous year. Our year ended with the Pool Closing Party. This year, 144 residents, family and friends attended the party. Rose Kuch out did herself again. The food was great and everything went smoothly. The grill guys, Dave Aker, Bob Porcaro, John Manganiello and Tony Skulitz kept the hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs and sausage and peppers moving. The ladies that helped serve the food kept the lines going and all was good. Rose had cake and ice cream sundies for dessert. We had huge mum plants and an assortment of restaurant gift cards for prizes. Thanks again for ALL of those who helped in cleaning up – it meant a lot to Rose and me. By the end of the evening, we both were pooped !!!! I mentioned in last month’s newsletter that I was hosting a Halloween Party on October 29th. I want to keep the cost down so there will be no D.J., but we will have music to dance to. There will be sandwiches (manwich sloppy joes), munchies and desserts, soda, beer and water. Feel free to bring your own wine. I will have prizes for those who come in costume for the funniest, scariest, most original and best overall costume. So please put your thinking cap on and come up with a costume to wear. If you want to have fun and really get a good laugh, come and see how crazy our Lions Head Residents can get by dressing in costume. The cost is $10.00 per person. Tickets 175 Brick Boulevard will go on sale before Bingo (3 weeks only) starting Brick Twp, New Jersey 0 October 6th, 13th and 20th. Anyone wanting to host a party or event MUST go thru our Activities Director, Kathy Cassa. Kathy will make sure there is not a conflicting party/event. EVERYTHING MUST GO THRU KATHY CASSA. I want to thank Kathy Cassa for having the Sands Casino trip last month. Everyone had a great time. The bus trip to the Amish Country will be rescheduled sometime in the Spring. More information will be provided in next year’s March issue. Also, I will be needing some volunteers to help decorate the Christmas trees in the Clubhouse for the Holiday Season. We will decorate on Sunday afternoon, November 19th or 26th. Will let you know the exact date in the November issue. A Word from the Control Committee The speed limit in the entire complex is We would like to remind our residents that when you are Planning work on and around your home to check to see If you need an approval from the Control Committee. Request forms can be picked up in the Association Office. When submitting a request please keep it short, detailed and include a sketch of what you want to do. Above all, if you are hiring a contractor, always get at least three estimates and if necessary get a permit, it is for your protection if there is a problem after the job is done. please adhere to this and stop at all stop signs. Garden Club 25 mph HOA in New Jersey Parking Rules Courts have upheld Associations regulations prohibited parking of commercial vehichles on streets. Specifically, the case of Verna vs. The Links at Valley Brook Nieghborhood Association Inc. a case out of New Jersey and was decided in January of 2004. In that case, a homeowner parked his work vehicle in his driveway. The associations restrictions prohibited parking of commercial vehicles at the homeowners property. Once the homeowner’s association delivered a letter complaining of the violation, the homeowner simply began parking his commercial vehicle in the street. The case went to court and the homeowner argued that the municipality controlled the streets, not the association. The court disagreed. The court found that the association’s parking regulations promoted a neighborhood scheme which was created by the deed restrictions. Furthermore, the homeowner as a matter of contract agreed to additional regulations when moving into the associations community. Thank you, thank you to all the wonderful people who came out this spring and helped set up the 5 pots that were put around the pool area for your enjoyment. This is the first year that we had so many people come out to help. How wonderful! I want to especially thank John DeSanto, Doc Kijowski, Marie Leide, Bruce & Marian Drury, and Dave Aker for planting and taking care of the circle in the pool area plus all the flower and tomato baskets, vegetable garden as well as the new second entrance flower beds. What an outstanding job. Marie Leide has been such a great help this whole season with watering the 5 pots at the pool and removing spent flowers. I could not have done it alone. I think we agree, this is the best year for our gardens. They are so beautiful. Thank you again. It's hard to believe that fall is here. We will be decorating our clubhouse front porch early October which will take us right through Thanksgiving. Once again, I would like to remind our smokers to please be sure that cigarettes are put out and deposited in the receptacle provided for that purpose. We use hay bales for decorations plus other things. Needless to say, the bales could easily burn if a cigarette is carelessly thrown away. I thank you for your attention to this request. Have a happy fall. Caregiver Volunteers Help Our Homebound Neighbors "Caring for People, by People Who Care" Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ), a non-profit agency active in Ocean County, is committed to enabling the frail and elderly of Ocean County remain independent living with dignity in their own homes. Some residents of Lions Head North are already volunteering their time, treasure and talent to help the frail and elderly living in our community and right outside the gates of Lions Head. eveJ volunteers provide transportation for medical appointments(maximum of one per week), do food shopping (volunteers shop for you), make reassuring telephone calls, friendly and pet visit, and provide respite care to families caring for loved ones with chronic illness, dementia or Alzheimer's disease .. A!l the services are provided for free, out of the generosity of their hearts. We know there are many of our neighbors living in Lions Head who are no longer driving, who are in need of this kind of basic assistance, but don't know about this free service. Will you help us 'spread the word' about CVCJ to your neighbors? "We are especially reaching out residents of to our southern Brick Township and Lakewood boarder retirement communities who are living by themselves, or are socially isolated and may not know about our program", said Mary O. Malagiere, Manager of Volunteers for CVCJ. "We help seniors who are no longer driving and we ask members of the community who are "out and about" to share this information about CVCJ services with neighbors and friends who may need our help" said Malagiere. CVCJ has been assisting the frail elderly of Ocean County since 1993. Over 1,000 volunteers assist over 2,000 seniors every month. To meet the needs our aging populationCv'Cl is in continuous need of new volunteers. "One of our goals is to have volunteers in every community available help their neighbors," said Malagiere. "We love 'to keep it local' and truly are 'neighbors helping neighbors' and the rewards are priceless to both the volunteer and the client resulting in stronger communities. "Volunteering is easy and if you have a little as 5 minutes a week, or a few hours a month, you can be involved with this significant volunteer opportunity and join our Caregiver Team" continued Malagiere. All volunteers must participate in a 1.5 hour orientation program and undergo a driving background check. Because eVC] provides supplemental insurance for all their volunteers and committed to keeping our seniors safe, the background check is a required part of the orientation. Each time the roll spins, the subtle scent will be released, so your bathroom smells sweet (a saving of $4.00 for a plug in air freshener). A pill bottle is perfect for a travel sewing kit 2. Why is it that we always lose a button or rip a hem when we’re on vacation, and have to go hunting for a needle and thread? To avoid the hassle, turn a medicine bottle into a bring anywhere sewing kit. To do: wrap a scrap of cloth around a cotton ball to make a pincushion, glue to the underside of the bottle cap and stick pins in it. Then fill the bottle with needles, thread and other sewing must haves. Screw the cap on the bottle and you’re good to go! The remains are leaving a vile odor, brown spots in lawns and residents and visitors are stepping on it. Please! Please! Please! Let this be the last reminder. “Roses are red, And violets are blue. Please pick up your dog’s poo So, I don’t have to do it for you.” SEPTEMBER 2016 LIONS HEADLines 17 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT H The Haven at Shorrock Gardens Alzheimer’s Academy Proudly Presents Alzheimer’s Awareness FUN DAY! at Shorrock Gardens Please join us for a fun afternoon in support of caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease & dementia. The meeting was called to order by John DeSanto. Roll call was taken – all Trustees were in attendance. Dave Aker led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag with a moment for silence to our men and women in the military. Bruce Drury read the Treasurer’s report stating that we have $1,016,517,000 and are in very good financial standing. And our maintenance is STILL $125.00 a month. John DeSanto asked for the various committee reports. Texas Hold-em will be held Sunday, September 18th. Atlantic City trip to Resorts will be September 27th. Bowling for the season has started and they can always use more bowlers. Choral Group will start up Tuesday, September 20th. Krista Campolatano thanked the people that helped her this year with the beautiful pots of flowers around the pool. She also thanked Dave Aker, Bruce and Marian Drury for their hard work in planting and watering the flowers at the back entrance to the development. John DeSanto also thanked Joe Peters for his help in planting the flowers in the circle at the pool. The Control Committee reported that there were 21 approved requests during July and August. Marie Liede reported that Lions Head South have been gracious in allowing the bocce players to use their bocce courts while ours were being renovated. She also stated that there will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for bocce to start up in the Spring. Also shuffleboard will begin January 10th and run until March 28th. Marian Drury said that ceramics will be starting back as soon as the ceramics room is finished being renovated. Dave and Doc have just a little more work to be done. Under Old Business: The bocce courts are almost finished. We just have to put the seats back in. Then they will be cleaned again at the start of the new season. The tennis courts are still being worked on. John DeSanto said that we had to remove all the trees around the courts because the roots were starting to grow under the courts. We are also going to install lines for Pickle Ball on both sides of the tennis court. Under New Business: The Mayor will be at our October 11th meeting. He will address any questions our residents may have. John DeSanto asked for comments from the Trustees. Tony Skulitz, our newest Trustee said he was in the process of starting up a web site for Lions Head North residents to be able to check the validity of the contractors that are doing work here in our community to make sure they are licensed contractors and not just scammers. (If you have any questions about any contractors you are thinking about having some work done in your home, please call the office and speak to Scott or one of the Trustees). Also, when you buy into Lions Head North, you are given a copy of our By-Laws and Rules and Regulations from our Control Committee – DO’S AND DON’TS. No work can be done, including new roofs, without the proper paper work and approval from our Control Committee. A motion was made by Joanne Corwin and seconded by Dave Aker to adjourn the meeting. The floor was then open for questions from the audience. Most of the questions were about the pool and residents wanting to keep the pool open past Labor Day. The Trustees said they would look into it for next year. SEPTEMBER 2016 LIONS HEADLines 23 24 LIONS HEADLines SEPTEMBER 2016 We all had such a wonderful time at the pool closing party. Thank you to Rosie Kuch and all her helpers for making the pool closing party a memorable one. Thank you also to Joanne Corwin and all that she did to add to the success of the party. The men that “sweated” over the barbeque grills did a fabulous job as did the ladies of LHN who served the food. The food was delicious, the company couldn’t be beat and the music was fabulous. On Tuesday, August 30th, the OUTDOOR BOCCE AND OUTDOOR SHUFFLEBOARD players of Lions Head North celebrated the ending of their fun-filled seasons with a pizza party and awards ceremonies. Marie Leide headed the Monday Night Bocce League which concluded on July 18th. Marie noted that the LHN President John DeSanto sent a special thanks to Lions Head South for graciously allowing LHN to use their facilities while our courts are being rebuilt. (They are now almost complete for the next League play.) Participating in Bocce were fifty players which completed twelve teams with subs. Robert Castelli, Rima White, Alice Moran and Dan Czaenik from TEAM 8 ranked first for the season. This year, the Tuesday night Shuffleboard League consisted of eight teams with four players on each team. Kathy Worts, who coordinated the league, also presented fun rewards and trophies. Marie Leide, Al Renzo, Vinny Militello and Helene Turner (Team 3) won first place. A small gift was presented to Marie Leidi for her tiredless hours she has given residents involved. Marie and Kathy send out a "THANKS TO ALL TEAM PLAYERS FOR A GREAT BOCCE AND SHUFFLEBOARD SEASON!" DERBY POOL RACE It was fun watching the ladies and men as jockeys riding on a noodle in the race. Stan Caris, the announcer, made a lot of jokes and the men marching around the pool with the flag was very patriotic. Everyone had a good time and really enjoyed themselves. Thank you Marie Leidi for putting this together. Again a great job!
