Welcome to our 12th Kirkcudbright
We very much hope that your visit to Kirkcudbright and our
twelfth trail will be an enjoyable one, and that if you are a resident
you find something different to see and do as we have some new
venues and new artists this year.
Last year’s Beach Hut theme proved so popular
that we almost ran out of places to display them! We
had to put our thinking caps on to come up with a
new idea. We do hope that you enjoy all the fish
swimming round the town during your enjoyable visit
to the trail.
Our friendly trail has something for everyone,
there are wonderful gardens to see, art to enjoy,
things to do and lovely places to have your
refreshments – and a bus to help with those tired
feet. You really won’t regret visiting us, just
remember to bring your camera!

Our free trail bus will help you get round our popular trail more easily
and is a great way to visit outlying venues. Its route starts from the
Harbour Square and information and timetable can be accessed at
Venue One, The Stage. So leave the crowds behind, save yourself time
and energy by hopping on the bus. Not only will it get you to your
destination faster but you will be able to see more of our lovely town.
Look out for the marked bus stops.

Once again the trail organisers have been busy,
we helped at the last country fair, and are looking
forward to promoting the trail at the next one. Our
very successful taster exhibition is to be repeated
again in June at The Harbour Cottage Gallery. During
the summer we did a twinning with the Black Pearl, a
large driftwood, pirate themed ship in New Brighton.
We travelled down for a weekend promoting not just
our trail but Kirkcudbright as well.
This Easter we were pleased to join with the
St Cuthbert’s Trust in making the biggest Easter Egg
Kirkcudbright has ever seen. Constructed over two
weeks it became an eye catching installation in the
Harbour Square and was a chance for people to
“have a go”.

Music is an added dimension to what you might
come across on the Trail and it is growing year by
year. Performances can be found on the decking in
Harbour Square at times shown on the stage but
additionally you will find musicians and dancers in
pubs, gardens and street corners to entertain you.
Also beware of the flash mob routine who will
materialise from nowhere to delight and surprise you!
Performers include: Dianne Stafford harp and
choir, The Lyric singers, The Razorbills, Terremoto
Samba Band, Pianist Forbes Kinghorn, The Feral
Choir, Kirkcudbright Choral Society, Pipers and more.
This year Venue 40 has a fantastic music
marquee, hosted by Lost Wasp Records, a small,
independent label operating out of Gatehouse of
Fleet. With a stated aim of fostering local writing and
performing talent, the label has so far released CDs
by Ted Percy, Alan McClure and The Razorbills, with
further releases by The Cracked Man and The Mind
Sweepers scheduled for 2015. These “Waspies”, plus
Susi Woodmass and others as yet undreamed of, will
be playing over the Art and Crafts Trail weekend,
showcasing the breadth and depth of original, local
music.

4 ~ Art & Crafts Trail 2015
So popular were the hand crafted beach huts on our last trail that
we felt we could not let the opportunity for everyone to have a
piece of art on the trail slip away.
Our theme for this year is FISH. The committee
are really looking forward to seeing all the different
types that are swimming into town and we hope that
all of you who have made one have had a great time
and a lot of fun doing so. For anyone interested in
joining in the fun but needing some help to get started
FISH BLANKS are provided free from the Summer
Festivities Charity Shop, but many that have come to
us have been made from scratch.
They are all different shapes, colours and sizes.
So on your journey round our Artists' Town look out
for the Flying Fish, the Five Red Herrings, Catch of
the Day, School Entries, the Recycled Beach Fish and
the giant John Dory, plus many, many more.
We hope you get hooked on this year’s theme.

The Black Pearl New Brighton (well worth a look)

We can only describe our visit to The Black Pearl
as a twinning experience extraordinaire!
The committee are always keen to try new things
to promote the Art and Crafts Trail and in June 2014
after carefully loading up a van with all of our trail art
work treasures, we set off on a pirate adventure.
The Black Pearl is a magnificent driftwood ship
which sits on the south side of the River Mersey on
the New Brighton sands at Cosy Cove. When we
parked we were surrounded by the fearsome crew,
who soon got to work setting up our treasures on the
promenade and shore.
The sun shone for most of our visit and over the
two days numerous people came to see us, a great
6 ~ Art & Crafts Trail 2015
time was had by all. Not one but two community
paintings were done and many colourful beach huts
made. All of these were displayed on our trail later
that year.
Instead of walking the plank we trod the Beatles
Abbey Road Crossing, our skeletons guarded the ship
and the great fish of Kirkcudbright swallowed a cruise
liner in one gulp.
All good things come to an end but our happy
ending was that we were given a driftwood pirate
and other artefacts by the generous Black Pearl
Crew.

We are very much looking forward to our
second Rotary Art Competition following
on from a very successful event last year.
This year the competition will once again involve
entries from students from our five partner Primary
Schools as well as entries from S1 and S2 students from
Kirkcudbright Academy. Additionally this year we will have
entries from S3 to S6 students meaning that we will now
have trophies, prizes and certificates awarded in three
different categories. All paintings, created under the
tutelage of the art specialists in the schools, will be on
display in The Lesser Town Hall during the Airdrie Boys
exhibition. This is a project which brings together
Kirkcudbright Rotary Club, Kirkcudbright 2000, the Art and
Crafts Trail as well as Kirkcudbright Academy and its five
partner Primary Schools. Please come along and view
some outstanding work by local youngsters and please do
take the opportunity to fill in your comments in the
dedicated Visitors’ Comments Book.

There has long been a fascination in Britain with the world of ancient
Egypt - what is it about this mysterious civilisation that so catches the
imagination? Around 5000 years ago the ancient Egyptians established
an extraordinary and enduring civilisation. This hands-on exhibition for
all the family offers an exciting overview of the world of the Ancient
Egyptians. 4 July - 26 Sep

If you are visiting the art and crafts trail the Limes is well worth a visit.
On the road to Dundrennan, this location is
within walking distance but is also served by the
FREE TRAIL BUS. Here three venues are to be
found. Firstly a wonderful garden to enjoy and
stroll around, divided into specific areas, flower
beds, greenhouse area, vegetable plots – there is
something for everyone. Caroline and David are
very willing to discuss the plants growing in their
gardens and are well used to visiting clubs from
far and wide.
Secondly, the large garage will be a venue
where you can see a variety of art and craft work
displayed, meet the artists and try your hand at
something new.
Last but not least Mary Newton will also be at
the Limes preparing her well known delicious food
for you to enjoy.
Caroline, David and Mary are all keen
supporters of, and fundraisers for, the
Kirkcudbright Swimming Pool, and we feel sure
that you will also see a few fish swimming about as
part of our trail theme. Do visit the Limes, you will
not be disappointed.

We are delighted to say that Oakley House will once again be
playing host as Venue 40 this year and will again be housing the
wonderful talents of The Galloway Creatives and Julie Middleton.
The Galloway Creatives are made up of 10 artists
and their amazing work will be exhibited indoors at
Oakley House, Venue 40, as well as some “Have A
Go” sessions. All of the work on show will be
available for sale.
This year, some of The Galloway Creatives will be
holding workshops in one of the marquees in the
garden. Why not book your place and come along
and create a wonderful family tree with Caroline from
Elegant Originals? Or perhaps the kids might like to
come and make a light tube with Gina from Gina
Lillicrop Designs? Or maybe you’d prefer to create a
knitted masterpiece using the largest knitting needles
you’ve ever laid eyes on?
If you visited Venue 40 last year you will know all
about the amazing cakes on offer as Niomi of Dotty

Niomi will be back with lots of wonderful cakes and
refreshments, but this year Dotty Designs will also be
offering lunches and a pop-up restaurant on the
evenings of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August.
Finally what better way to enjoy tasty treats than
to sit and listen to some great music from local
bands? This year there will be a fantastic music

this brochure and also from the information stage.
