Happy New Year Fellow Lions
It is hard to believe that my first
half-year as District Governor has
gone by. Starting with Caledonia,
we have completed twenty-two club
visits and have another twelve
scheduled by the end of February.
Visiting clubs is the highlight of a
Governor’s term. Seeing what local
Lions do to serve their communities is the Heart of
Being a Lion.
As you read this, we are busy finishing plans for our
convention in the Kahler Apache Hotel in Rochester,
January 22-24, 2016. Thank you to the many clubs
who submitted their Everyday Hero nominations.
We will recognize them at the Saturday Evening
Banquet. There is still time to sign up and hear:
Hanna Elshoff, ID Linda Tincher, Jessica Moore, Jim
Chalmers, Dave Glover, PDG Dave Tincher and
Bunny Talbatt.
Plus, we will have a special
performance of Helen Keller’s challenge to Lions to
be “Knights of the Blind.” It will make you proud of
what it means to be a Lion. Bring a prospective
member as a guest so they can see what Lions do. I
also encourage clubs to support their award recipients
so they can attend all of the Saturday sessions.
Our District will be recognized by LCI with the
Silver Crane for having a positive membership
growth (7) this year. Keep it up! Think of a fun and
rewarding activity your club will be doing and invite
a person to join you and discover the “Joy of Serving
Others.” Make it your New Year’s resolution to
“Just Ask One” or more!
January 10-16 is the Lions Worldwide Week of
Service to fight Hunger and Poverty. What will your
club do to help in this area? Make sure you report
this activity in your monthly service reports.

Earlier this year, the Winona Noon Lions held a
fundraiser for Project New Hope. They were assisted
by the Sons of the American Legion. As a result, the
Sons of the American Legion donated $1,000 in
addition to the money that was raised at the chicken
barbeque.

First Vice District Governor

Christmas is almost here and we still
don’t have any snow. At least it’s cold
enough that we don’t have to mow the
lawn any more.
About thirty years ago the snow was
just right for digging. Solid enough
that you didn’t sink down and not so
hard the kids couldn’t push a shovel in
with a little effort, so we went out to
dig tunnels while Mary Beth worked on lunch.
I thought we would dig one big tunnel but the kids all
decided to dig their own tunnels. The youngest had a
little trouble and his siblings tried to help. “I’ll do it
myself,” he said. The older kids let him try for a while
but after they saw he was having trouble they stepped in
to help again.
Our youngest immediately abandoned his tunnel and
went off to start another one. I told his brothers and
sister to let him work on it himself. He eventually got a
tunnel big enough that he could get into, turn around and
look out on the world. Mary Beth joined us with a
thermos of hot chocolate and some cups. She admired all
the tunnels and my youngest shouted “I did it all by
myself.” I guess “tunnel neatness” has something to do
with whether or not you are able to do it all by yourself.
Our Mid-Winter Convention starts on January 22nd with
a cabinet meeting and a Memorial Service for our fellow
Lions who have died this past year. The hospitality book
goes from $80 to $90 after December 27th. We also have
a block of rooms reserved for this event at the KahlerApache for $90 a night until January 1st. We hope many
of you take advantage of this rate.
I spent a little over thirty years as a Superintendent of
Schools, a profession where the average tenure is just
over two years. My last stay of twelve years was in
Lewiston-Altura. Our High School Principal replaced
me as the Superintendent and is currently serving in his
fifth year as a successful Superintendent of Schools.
If I do win this upcoming election for District Governor
I’ll do the best I can to serve you well but my real job is
to ensure we have successful people in the Cabinet and
other positions.
We have a lot of people in 5M1 that have shown
tremendous leadership capabilities in the past and would
be real assets to 5M1 in further leadership rolls.
Some people are concerned about being the center of
attention, but that is not what leadership is about; real
leaders are people that enable others to get their jobs
done. When asked to serve in the Cabinet or any other
roll I hope you step forward with a positive response.

Peace Poster

The District 5M1 Lions International Peace Poster and
Essay Contest Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday,
December 6, 2015 at the Clarion Inn in Rochester,
Minnesota. There were 104 students, parents and Lions in
attendance. We had 39 schools participate in the peace
poster contest and no one in the essay contest part. The 39
schools had 30 Lions Club sponsors and a total of 1082
students from the 39 schools participated. Rochester
Community Technical College art instructor Simon
Huelsbeck did a great job in his presentation to the
students. Simon said this year the pictures were some of the
best overall painting he has judged. Past District Governor
Lion Dudley Parsons and Lion Nadeen Lunde did excellent
work in taking and printing pictures of the students with
District Governor Stanley Nerhaugen II.
The top three poster winners are: 1st place – Sydney Pitzen
of Immanuel Lutheran SILO School in Lewiston and
sponsored by the Lewiston Lions Club, 2nd place – Shenali
De Silva of Pacelli School in Austin and sponsored by the
Austin Noon Lions Club, 3rd place – Aryana Baerthel of
Stewartville Middle School in Stewartville and sponsored
by the Stewartville Noon Lions Club.
The eight Honorable Mention awards were to the following
students: Serena Walker – Zumbrota-Mazeppa School,
Raegan Eickhoff – St. John’s Lutheran School-Wykoff,
Rachel Rho – Friedell Middle School-Rochester, Belle
Horstman – St. Francis of Assisi School-Rochester, Tanner
Mundt – Lewiston-Altura School-Lewiston, Kelly Hanson
– LeRoy-Ostrander School-LeRoy, Claire Buttell – St.
Marys School-Caledonia, and Olivia Drath – St. Charles
Elementary School-St. Charles.
The winning poster will be on display at the Mid-Winter
Convention in Rochester. Remember to bring your Parade
of Green for the Peace Poster to the Mid-Winter
Convention as your funds help us support the Peace Poster
Awards each year. Thanks you all from the Peace Poster

Second Vice District Governor

As some of you may have realized I
have been a no show at the November
zone meetings. I want to thank the
zone chairs for doing a great job
presenting the new format for our
zone meetings to the clubs. This new
format is more focused on helping clubs. I hope
that we will see a bigger attendance for the March
Zone meetings. Thank you Zone Chairs.
In November, I was diagnosed colon-rectal cancer.
This is 3rd time returning. The 5 cm mass was
found in my lung. I have been undergoing chemo
to shrink the tumor and will be having surgery soon.
I want to thank everyone for all the thoughts and
prayers.
Please be sure to sign up early for the Mid-Winter
Convention: January 22 thru 24, 2016.

Can Do Canines
Thanks to the support of Lions Clubs across 5M,
Can Do Canines continues to train specially trained
dogs for people with disabilities and provide them
to those in need, free of charge.
One recipient of a Can Do Canines assistance dog is
11 year-old Isaiah Kramer. Isaiah has been
diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a
degenerative muscle disease that affects every
muscle in the body—legs, arms, lungs, heart, and
more. Isaiah continues to physically decline, so he
now depends on his wheelchair all the time.
Mobility Assist Dog Leo helps Isaiah by picking
items that he drops, pulling off his socks and
pushing buttons to open handicap doors in public.
Below is a letter from Isaiah about how Leo has
transformed his life.
I am writing to thank you and everyone at Can Do
Canines for giving Leo to me.
always cheers me up because I can talk to him and
he doesn’t argue with me.
I felt so lonely before. Now Leo will snuggle up
next to me, play with me and make me happy
anytime. I don’t feel as lonely anymore.

2016 Winter Graduation
Come meet graduates like Isaiah at Can Do Canines
2016 Winter Graduation Ceremony on Saturday,
February 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. More than 15 teams will
receive diplomas in recognition of graduating from
our assistance dog program.
The event will take place at Can Do Canines facility
at 9440 Science Center Drive, New Hope, MN

Having Leo has changed everything.
Before I met Leo, I
was unhappy all of
the time because I
couldn’t do much and
I always had to ask
for help. My family
would be busy and I
had to bug them all
the time just to pick
something up off of
the floor for me.
I was nervous and
excited to meet Leo for the first time. Leo got used
to me right away, but it was also a little scary. He
was excited to see me every time we came for
training.
Having Leo makes me feel more independent. He
picks things up for me, helps me clean my room
and carries things for me. I don’t have to ask for
help from my family as much.
Leo loves to follow me around and loves playing
with me. We play Frisbee, tug and fetch together. I
love how excited he is when he sees me. He runs to
me and jumps around and rubs into me with his
back.
I feel safe at night because Leo is there. I sleep
better with him next to me.
If I am sad, I can go to Leo and he looks really
concerned for me. I can see it in his eyes. He

LCIF Making A Difference in the World
LCIF International Chair, Joe Preston, reviewed the
action of LCIF on a recent trip to Cuba. Lions
Clubs International Foundation's Sight First
program is alive and well there. In partnership with
Christian Blind Ministries, the German Lions and
the Churches of Cuba, LCIF continues to support
services for babies born with retinopathy of
prematurity (ROP). Fighting childhood blindness is
a priority for Sight First and increasing the number
of eye care personnel available to screen and treat
ROP is one way to do that.
LCIF also is continuing to fight trachoma, the
leading cause of blindness in the world. LCIF has
been fighting the disease, in partnership with The
Carter Center, since 1999. Recently, LCIF partners,
the International Trachoma Initiative, Pfizer and
others, celebrated the donation of the 500 millionth
dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic used to treat the
trachoma in certain countries. The milestone marks
significant achievement in global efforts to help
eliminate this preventable eye disease as a public
health threat by the year 2020.
Every day, we are realizing International
President Yamada's theme of "Dignity, Harmony
and Humanity." We provide dignity to those we
serve, we work together in a spirit of harmony,
and we serve humanity by helping those in need.
Lions around the world are united by a great
spirit of giving and dedication to helping others,
proving that "Where there is a need, there is a
Lion." LCIF is here to support your
compassionate works by providing grant funding
for your local and global humanitarian
efforts. As 2015 comes to a close, please
consider supporting your Foundation so that we
can continue improving lives for years to come.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! The Leos in
5M1 have been very busy in the last few months. We
really appreciate the generous funds we received at the
Parade of Green last January, it has given many Leos the
opportunity to attend leadership camps and District
conventions. I have had the opportunity to come and
speak to a few of your clubs in our district about starting
a Leo club in your area. Please don’t hesitate to contact
me or Lion Lynn Knutson if you want more info, or for
us to come and speak to your club again. My goal is to
start two new Leos clubs in 5M1 and to increase
membership by 10% with present clubs in 2016.
The Kasson-Mantorville Leos have been doing
wonderful things. They have worked at tailgating
parties (with help of the Lions grilling:), helped the
Lions with the White Cane day with proceeds going to
the Minnesota Vision programs, and held a silent
auction with proceeds going to the local Habitat for
Humanity. They have also done an annual school
food drive where 6,549 lbs of food and $1,252.62
dollars were collected and raised. THAT IS
AMAZING! The KM Leos also assisted with the local
Care and Share auction; KM Lions provided cash
donation for the event. Total dollars raised with the
event were over $25k to be used for special needs in
the county. Michele Lindquist, KM school advisor,
provides high energy and leadership to the KM Leos
program.
The Lancer Leos have also worked on many
projects. They held their annual Souls 4 Soles shoe
drive and collected 577 pairs of shoes. Lion Teresa
O’Donnell-Ebner has been a huge leader for the
group. At their bi-monthly meetings they have been
making notes for the Meals on Wheels recipients and
helping separate food at the local food shelf. They
also collected food at the Holiday Train when it
passed through town last week.
Multiple Leos clubs in our district have helped ring
bells for the Salvation Army and also wrapped gifts at
local malls for a fundraiser. Money raised will
be benefitting Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity
and making tie blankets for the homeless. We will
have many Leos attending our 5M1 Mid-Winter
convention in January. They will be working on
service projects and also participating with our
speakers. Please welcome them and invite them to sit
with you during meals. The youth will also get to
have some fun with a pool party. :)

Rushford Lions Club
Rushford Peterson Valley Lions helped harvest fruits and
vegetables for local food shelves and non-profit
organizations.
The following is a summary of the end-of-season report
provided by Liz Belina. Liz is the local area Volunteer and
Program Coordinator.
Thanks to the help of the Rushford Peterson Valley
Lions and friends it was a very successful year of
gleaning in the fields of Featherstone Farms in
Rushford Minnesota. Featherstone operates a 250 acre
farm of organically grown fruits and vegetables.
During the 2015 growing season, volunteers ranging in age
from 5 to 75 picked nearly 100 quarts of strawberries, as
much as 2,000 pounds of zucchini and early cabbage,
several hundred pounds of cherry and regular tomatoes,
three pickup loads of squash, 2,500 pounds of cauliflower,
and red and green winter cabbage, lettuce and other greens,
and many bushels of apples and pears.
Total pounds delivered throughout the spring and summer
by this small group volunteers was in the 8,000 to 10,000
pound range.
The produce was delivered to several non-profit groups and
organizations.
One organization was Rushford-Peterson schools. The
kitchen staff, under the direction of the head cook, Joyce
Miller, used and prepared the produce during the regular
school year and also during the busy summer lunch
program.
Produce was also delivered to the Rushford Food Shelves,
Rushford Senior Dinning, Eagle Bluff Learning Center in
rural Lanesboro Minnesota, and to Channel One Food Bank
in Rochester Minnesota.
With each of delivery was a ‘Thank You.” But none was as
meaningful as a day in July at Channel One Food Bank in
Rochester Minnesota. Word of the available produce
brought to action an office worker who arranged for a next
day delivery. She needed food for 220 people, but there
were only green beans on the shelf. After delivery there
were suddenly many pounds of yellow summer squash,
green zucchini, and early cabbage. Before leaving, all the
produce brought in was spoken for by clients. After many
heartfelt thank yous, arrangements were made for another
delivery when available later in the season.
“Thank you to all those who participated in either the
growing or collecting of the produce,” said Liz, “and
especially Featherstone Farms for being willing to work
with us.”
The Featherstone Story
Featherstone Farm is a 250 acre certified organic farm
located in the bluff country in and around Rushford,
Minnesota. The farm produces around 70 varieties of fresh
market fruits and vegetables for distribution to natural food
stores, wholesalers and Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) members throughout the region. We offer Summer
Share CSA, Fall Share CSA and Winter Share CSA
(Community Supported Agriculture) for subscribers to
participate in across the Twin Cities Area, Rochester and
Winona and we also sell our produce wholesale to local
markets throughout the region.
Founded in 1994 by Jack Hedin and Jenni McHugh,
Featherstone Farm draws its name, and focus on
environmental sustainability, from the Featherstone
Township homestead (80 miles upriver) where Jack's great
grandfather farmed and planted trees in the 19th century.
Jack and Jenni were among the 6 founding members of the
Zephyr Valley Community Land Co-operative in rural
Winona, MN, the first home of Featherstone Farm (19972007). They had a number of farm partners in the early
years, including Jack’s brother Ed, and an old friend of
Jenni’s from an orchard in New York, Rhys Williams.
In 2000 Jenni moved on from daily work on the farm to
follow her passion for working with families and babies
and now works as a childbirth and parent educator. Even
though she doesn’t get to spend much time in the fields or
with the crew, she will always be connected to the rhythms
of the farm and work that brings fresh, good food into
people’s lives.
Jenni and Jack have three sons: Emmet, Oscar, and
Jasper. Since flooding in 2007 they have owned a home in
Winona, however, in October 2010 they were able to
purchase a 118 acre farm on the ridge above Featherstone’s
shop. Everyone in the family looks forward to enjoying a
swimming pond and big, beautiful woods right out the back
door.

Winona Noon Lions
Kasson-Mantorville Lions

The Winona Noon Lions, along with family members
and friends, packed bags filled with all the trimmings for
a nice Christmas dinner. This has become a longstanding
tradition in which the Noon Lions and Volunteer
Services make sure that those less fortunate families in
our community will be able to sit down to a delicious
Holiday meal.
As the volunteers worked, there was much laughter and
song. It is doing good deeds for others that truly
embraces the meaning of Christmas. Many of the
volunteers look forward to this project every December.
A few hours of organization and work offers so many
feelings of happiness and joy. Pictured below are Lions
and friends working to fill these bags with all the fixings
for a great meal. An assembly line is formed in which
each volunteer puts one item in each bag as others carry
these bags along the line and then arrange them to be
ready for pick up the next morning.

The Christmas season is a very active one for the
Winona Noon Lions. Beside packing Christmas dinners
to be picked up by families in need, they also serve a sit
down Christmas meal to people that otherwise may sit
home alone on this special day.
The Lions extend their wish to all for a happy and safe
holiday season.

$1280 from club members plus the club donated an
additional $500 to the Dodge County Salvation Army.

MD5M EXECUTIVE SECRETARY BOB HARMS TO RETIRE
Long time MD5M Executive Secretary Bob Harms has announced his retirement as of the end of the 2016-17 Lions
year. Lion Bob joined the Kingston Lions Club in October of 1990 and has been an active member ever since.
He became initially involved as a secretary when he served as co-secretary (with PCC Deborah Harms) of the
Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Inc. which has since been renamed to the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation.
Lion Bob became the Executive Secretary of MD5M in 2003 and has held that position ever since. He has set an
example for others to follow. In addition to his mandated Secretary duties, he has gone above and beyond is serving
Lions, willing to teach classes at the DGE training session and being a representative on the Board of Trustees of the
Lion MD5M Hearing Foundation, Inc.
Always willing to give, in 2012 Lion Bob undertook an un paralleled fundraiser for the Hearing Foundation by
riding a lawn mower the entire length of Minnesota, from the Canadian border to Iowa. As a recipient of a BAHA
(Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Lion Bob was generous in giving of his time to tell any Lion who asked how it
worked and let them try it for themselves.
In reviewing the accomplishments of MD5M Lions, it is my sincere hope that Lion Bob enters the MD5M Hall of
Fame due to his unrelenting service to Lions in general and MD5M in particular. I can think of no one more worthy.

LIONS DISTRICT 5M1
Lion Greg Larson of the Austin Morning Lions Club and I, Lion Janet Antonson of the
Stewartville Morning Lions Club, are 2015/2016 Co-Chairs of the District 5M1 Special
Olympics Program. In this capacity, we have talked to several of the clubs in our District about
the worldwide partnership the Lions have with Special Olympics. The purpose of this letter is to
ask you to allow one of us to visit your club to share with you information about this partnership
and how we, as Lions, can participate in Special Olympics of Minnesota. We will tell you what
Special Olympics is, does, and the benefits it provides. We will also give you several ways you
can help and the benefits you and your club will receive.
Please choose a meeting date for us to come and contact one of us. We would like to have all
clubs find time for us to visit, especially if you have not invited us to your club in the past.

One item we are doing again this year is Lion Greg will be putting together a team to do the
Polar Plunge in Rochester, Minnesota on Saturday February 13, 2016. The event is very
organized and does a great job of raising funds for Minnesota Special Olympics. You can join

Polar Plunge. Once you go to that site you go to event to pick the Rochester location. You then
