A different way of looking, perceiving and understanding landscape that uses sensibility and
intuition as modes of perception in order to extract from the landscape its traces of expression,
its lines of force, the sensations it composes, its materials and their inner
composition .
But also, and most importantly, presents a transformation - it’s not a natural landscape - that
converts all these forces, lines and materials into matters of expression of a work of architecture
and only through the architect / artist composition.

When I think about architecture,
images come into my mind.
Many of these images are connected
with my training and work as an
architect.
Some of the other images have to do
with my childhood.
There was a time when I experienced
architecture without thinking about it.
→the deepest architectural experience
(a particular door handle)

It is important to me to reflect about architecture,
to step back from my daily work and take a look at
what I am doing and why I am doing it.
design a building → old, half-forgotton memories → recollect → revive

-materials
Materials in architecture can be made to shine and vibrate.
-light
the light of the moon, the light of the sun, the light in the landscape,
shadow and the darkness
-details
Details are not mere decoration. They do not distract or entertain.
They lead to understanding of the whole of which they are an
inherent part.
-space
Space is a tiny part of the infinity that
surrounds the earth, and yet each and
every building marks a unique place
in that infinity.

-life
There is a power in the ordinary things of everyday life.
Every building is built for a specific use in a specific place and for a
specific society.
If its body is sensitive enough, it can assume a quality that bears
witness to the reality of past life.
-desire
"I want to build this house!"
The design process is based on a
constant interplay of feeling and reason.

The Light in the Landscape
“I have always wanted to write a book about light.
I can think of nothing that reminds me of eternity.”
“Which light do we want to switch on between sunset and sunrise?”

The Magic of the Real
The magic of the real: that to me is the “alchemy.”
Real substances→Human sensations
“Can I create that unique feeling of intensity and mood, of presence, well-being, nightness
and beauty?”

My Lord and my God,
take from me everything
that distances me from you.
My Lord and my God,
give me everything

Landscape v.s. Tower
The Bruder Klaus Field Chapel began as a sketch that eventually evolved into a stylish point of
reference while essential in the natural landscape of Germany.
“ To me, buildings can have a beautiful silence that I associate with attributes such as composure,
self- evidence, durability, presence and integrity, and with warmth and sensuality, a building that is
being itself, being a building, that does not represent anything…”
