Quarterly report on the activities within Work Package 7 –
promotion, dissemination and industry migration,
during the period from July 1 to September 30, 2012
The festival of science in Dublin - ESCEA (European Science Events Association)
and the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) 8-15.7.2012
participants: Aleksandra Kapuscinska- Bernatek, Anna Brzozowska, Beata Kusiak
Three delegates representing IPC PAS took part in the festival of science in Dublin on 6-15 July 2012.
The festival covered a conference of the ESCEA (European Science Events Association) and the
Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF).
During the EUSEA ANNUAL CONNFERENCE we presented three posters: SCIENTIFIC CHILDHOOD,
OPEN AIR CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTS and ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF LEARNING. Also, we had an
opportunity to listen several lectures given by EUSEA members, and to participate in interactive
sessions and workshops. Our posters aroused a great interest during posters session. We were asked
numerous questions about the organization of various original ideas such as a chemical tram or
participation of children in preschool chemical experiments. Since the most popular method of
science communication is the organization of picnics, most of the participants were impressed that
our Institute promotes science among the society through other custom projects.
During the ESOF (11-15.07.2012) we listened to lectures of four Nobel Prize winners (Jules Hoffmann,
Immunology CNRS Research Director; Peter Doherty, Immunology, University of Melbourne; James
Watson, Genetics, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory; Torsten Nils Wiesel, Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine in 1981, Neuroscience), Rolf-Dieter Heuer, General Director of CERN, and many other
prominent scientists, politicians and activists. We participated in plenary sessions, for example,
Program Science-2-Business session, sessions on the popularization of science in the media, raising
funds for research and Spin-offs.

Ideas and their realization
Introduction
A huge amount of research institutes in Poland is perceived as hermetic
creations, focusing around only venerable group of scientists. Not many
people realize that in fact in all Polish scientific institutes such training is given
the third degree (doctorate), and that they are full of young, enthusiastic
settable to learn and other people.
The Institute of Physical Chemistry as one of Poland's first opened its doors to
young "scientists". At first it was the invitation of several primary schools
(children aged 6-13 years) to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry in
June 2011. It was the first time where so little children were admitted to our
institute.
Open-day lectures with experiments and hands-on activities
The lectures are dedicated to high-school audience
Group of pupils-around 30
Time- 1-2 hours
Experiments were accompanied by a multimedia presentation
Experiments performed by students under supervision
Experiments on all kinds of scientific events
Students performed experiments completely independently under the
supervision PhD students
Tram Chemistry
The tram consists of a mobile classroom (historic wagon) and a laboratory
on the tracks. Lessons are conducted for students of middle school and
high school.
Time- 1 hour.
Each lesson begins a series of experiments that are carried out on the
platform of the tram. Staff of the Institute of Physical Chemistry shows
experiments such as: changes in pH using the dry ice, the hydrogen
peroxide decomposition and combustion reactions. These experiments
are very spectacular and interesting.
After the demonstration part, the students move to a mobile classroom
(tram).
During the tour students learn about the biography and achievements of
the Maria Sklodowska-Curie. The tram is also a great place to learn about
the place in Warsaw, associated with one of the world's most famous Polish
women.
Summary and conclusions
Our institute is open to all kinds of ideas and experiments. We want
to encourage young people to explore more closely the world around
us. We offer a number of different types of activity. We also remember a
very important component which is SAFETY.
