BROKAW — A development company has purchased the former
Eric J. Spirtas, a partner of Brokaw Development, said the deal with
Wausau Paper has been in the works for several months. The future
development for the site has not yet been determined, but the mill will
not be used to make paper, he said.

“We like to scream one four-letter word as loud as we can — jobs,”
Spirtas said this morning.
Wausau Paper sold its printing- and writing-paper division in January
and shuttered its mill north of Wausau in February, leaving 400
Brokaw employees out of work.
A new business in the paper mill would be good news for surrounding
municipalities, too, said Wausau Assistant Community Development
Director Heather Wessling.

“You’re just as strong as the area businesses
that surround you,” Wessling said.
Up-and-coming industries such as craft
brewing or information technology could be a
good fit for the old paper mill, Wessling said.

Merrill City Administrator Dave Johnson said
the sale could be big for Merrill residents who
lost their jobs when the mill closed earlier this
year, but only if the development company
finds businesses to fill the space.
“If it opens for business in any manner, it would
benefit Merrill,” he said. “But its value is in
running as some form of long-term employer.”
Spirtas declined to say how much the property
was purchased for. Marathon County Land
records show that the land still is owned by
Wausau Paper Mills, said Debbie DeLaporte,
an accounting assistant for the county.

Spirtas is president of Niagara Worldwide,
which purchased in February 2011 the former
NewPage paper mill in Niagara. The company
is in the process of redeveloping the property,
but has recently reactivated a landfill at the site
and sold a building to a steel fabrication
business that created about 20 jobs.
Spirtas sees similar possibilities in Brokaw.

“We want to see if we can subdivide and
logically develop pieces so we don’t impact
future development, but take advantage of
current development possibilities,” Spirtas
said.
Chris Marlowe, 43, of Merrill, worked at the
mill for 20 years before he lost his job in February. He was excited
when told of the sale.
“It is great news. Anything that has the potential to generate jobs in our
area is a plus,” Marlowe said.
