Business is hurting in most traditional African tourism locales due to fears of the disease and a general lack of awareness by western consumers of just how far it is from the affected countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to popular travel destinations like Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa. “There are 55 countries in Africa and how many are affected?” asks Jason Barry, direc10 cover story tor of marketing for 16 on tour the Elewana chain of 18 florida hotels in Tanzania and 22 classifieds Kenya. “Most consumers don’t have any idea how big Africa is.” Barry, a Brit based in Arusha, Tanzania, reserves most of his vitriol for the media, particularly the BBC, CNN and Sky News, for fanning the hysteria of the “dreadful,” but localized Ebola outbreak, which has claimed close to 6,000 lives in the West African countries so far. But, as Barry pointed out at the recent World Travel The Airline Ticket Centre a Checking out the new Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas on one of its inaugural preview sailings recently was a crew from Vision Travel: Joanne Patterson, Mary Ogaki (Royal Caribbean International), Lynda Sinclair and Stephanie Anevich. Barry welcomes the awareness brought by the media to the crisis, but he complains that it “has gone into the realm of entertainment. “Africa needs longer-term solutions,” he says, and not just pertaining to Ebola. “120,000 people died of malaria in the last two years... Where was the international indignation about that?” However, in the here and now, Barry says, “Livelihoods of hundreds of thousands [of Africans working in the tourism industry] are being affected. People are being laid off... “The Chinese have stopped travelling because of their remembrance of SARS, the Russians have stopped travelling [because of the Ukraine war]...” Business has been affected from North America, but Barry says it’s not the cancellations that hurt (they can be rebooked), its the unknown number of people who choose not to book. “If anything needs to be done, it’s more positives,” he says. “And there’s so much good news in Africa!” — Michael Baginski FOUNDER W.H. Since August 2014, the hotel has been producing lime blossom honey and mixed honey in an attempt to offer sustainable, regional products to its guests. Head Chef Jeffrey Hoogstraaten says he is excited that the new addition to his kitchen is helping improve the environment. Swissôtel Bremen is the first hotel in the centre of the Hanseatic city to have bee hives on its roof. The two hives currently in place are expected to grow to 50,000 bees each, for a total of 100,000 bees making honey by next year. EXECUTIVE V.P. SANDALS ROCKS TORONTO AT ‘UNVEILINGS 2014’ EVENT Sandals rolled into to Toronto last week (Wednesday) at the end of a “world tour” designed to bring its message of love to travel agents. With an aura more befitting rock stars than hoteliers, the Toronto stop was the culmination of “Unveilings 2014,” an annual tour of the trade that now calls in multiple cities in the US, UK and Canada – including, this year, Halifax and Ottawa. A crowd of 500 travel agents and supplier partners turned out for a lively night full of news (free WiFi will be introduced at all resorts next year; a new Red Lane-branded skin care line of products will soon be launched...); awards for top achievers; trip giveaways; and sales tips and techniques (50% of all Sandals honeymooners use a travel agent). ‘No problem’ Sandals VP and former Canadian chief Gary Sadler reminded the audience that Sandals is the only resort company to have a full office in Canada and that the company will do anything “to get your business.” Sandals CEO Adam Stewart stated that travel agents are the lifeblood of the company and that Sandals and Beaches will always be dynamic and responsive to the needs of both the trade and its guests. 6 TRAVEL COURIER 1204NEWZ.indd 6 “The only ‘no’ you’ll ever hear us say,” he said, “is ‘no problem’.” DELTA HOTELS UNVEILS FLAGSHIP IN TORONTO Delta Hotels & Resorts officially opened its new flagship property Nov. 27) – the Delta Toronto hotel in downtown Toronto, the first fourstar, full-service hotel to be built in the city in over two decades. The airport is fully operational and welcoming visitors, and any remaining repairs are “merely cosmetic,” the team said. Six of Sunquest’s Cabo properties are now open, with others slated to open later. The last to open will be a Meliá scheduled to open in June. ▶www.SunquestAgent.ca WINTER SAVINGS HEAT UP NEW YORK JAN.-MARCH Book now and save, that’s the message from NYC & Company to travellers looking to spend some time in New York City during January, February and March 2015.
