will be held on the football
field May 26 at 4:00 PM,
weather permitting. In the
event of bad weather, graduation will be held in the new
gym. If inclement weather
does arise and the location
is changed to the gym, expect some crowding as space
there is more limited.
Awards day was held May
23.
According to Principal
Tommy Hunter, many seniors have received honors
and scholarships.
The Spring Sports banquet

Graduation May 27

East Limestone’s graduation will be held May 27 at
8:00 PM, in the new gymnasium. An estimated 152
students will be graduating.
Principal Dennis Black
stated “This graduating class
has earned $3 million in
scholarships; 49 of the 152
students have an average of
90 or above. This has been
an exceptional class from kindergarten forward, and they
are a great group of young
people.”

Forty-two residents of Giles
County received degrees during the Commencement.
Along with the degrees

President Ted Brown presented two significant individual honors as part of the
ceremony.
The President’s Award,

point average, was presented

The 2011 Fred E. Ford Exemplary Teaching Award, given to a member of the faculty

kids can take laptops along
with them to class and study
groups. If grads already have
a new or relatively new computer, consider upgrading the
computer’s accessories. For
example, a new set of computer speakers can increase a
computer’s functionality and
might even serve as a less
bulky home theater system.
* Money: Though it’s not
incredibly personal, money
is a gift no college-bound
recent graduate will turn
down. Kids are going to
need money more than ever
before while they’re at college, where they’ll need to

become a graduation staple,

the song in 1901, and the
march was intended for the

VII. When Elgar received an
honorary doctorate from Yale
University in 1905, the march
was played in his honor as a
recessional. Once Yale used
the march, other universities
began to play the march as
well. Eventually it became
the trendy thing to do and
“Pomp and Circumstance”
became forever ingrained
in graduation custom. Today
it is hard to imagine a commencement ceremony without the famed processional
and the requisite cap, tassel
and gown.

According to a 2010 study
conducted by researchers at
the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, a
midday nap might just make
you smarter. The study was
conducted with the help of
39 college students, each of
whom was asked to learn
a series of new names and
faces at noon and match the
faces a few minutes later.
The same test was then performed at 6 p.m. that same
day. A group of the participants who took a nap at 2
p.m. performed better than
those students who did not
nap. The latter group, in fact,
had a significant decline in
memory test scores. Researchers credit the nap with

Each school and age-old
tradition will dictate what
