Vancouver District Earthquake Drill:
What happens if there is ever a real earthquake?
The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our
highest priority at VSB. As such, we practice safety drills
throughout the year to help our students know what to
do in an emergency.
British Columbia is located in a seismically active
region where a few thousand earthquakes occur
each year in and adjacent to the province. The
threat of a major earthquake is real and all British
Columbians must know how to be prepared.
Last Thursday, May 7th we conducted the annual District wide ‘Big One at Two’ drill. We learn from each
drill and make improvements.
The designated evacuation area at Bayview is the North
West field along the Dunbar St. fence.
School staff have organized into function teams responsible for specific duties such as site security, first aid,
radio communications, student release, other operations, and logistics.
In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury in an Earthquake if you:
DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquakes knocks you down). This position protects you from
falling but allows you to still move if necessary.
COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible)
under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby,
only then should you get down near an interior wall (or next
to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you), and cover your
head and neck with your arms and hands.
HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the
shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the
shaking shifts it around.
In the event of a real earthquake or other emergency, students will only be released to parents
and/or alternates listed on the emergency information forms you provided to the school. These
are the ONLY people who will be allowed to sign
for the release of a student in an emergency situation.
Students will be released from the designated
evacuation area. Parents or alternates will be expected to:
1)
Locate and report to their child’s teacher in
the evacuation area
2)
Sign for the release of their child in their
care.
Please be prepared to show identification, as this
may be necessary to confirm your identity if you
are not known to staff.
School staff responsible for site security will direct
adults at entry gates at fences.
Students who are not picked up would be looked after
at the school by the staff. After 72 hours, your child
might be transferred to the nearest emergency shelter.
Families are encouraged to plan drills for their own
homes and talk about how the family will reconnect in
the event of an emergency. Personal family preparedness in case of earthquakes or other emergencies is
essential.

BRAVO!
Friday was a spectacular day. Bayview would like to thank the many parents who volunteered
and took part in the race.
Many thanks goes to organizer, Brennan Chan to create an amazing event to celebrate Child
and Youth Mental Health Awareness Week.
Much thanks also goes to our valued community partners who sponsored the race and provided
so much!
Thanks to:
Fore Runners– the race numbers were ’cool’ and your staff of Olympic caliber athletes lead the
warm up, and set an astonishing running pace that some of our own students were able to keep
up to, as well generously handing out race souvenirs and draw prizes.
IGA– for providing healthy refreshments
Kelty Mental Health thanks for providing onsite education and resources about mental health
Bayview Parents who pitched in volunteering to deliver tables, and set up and clean up—lots of
work!
Teachers and staff and parent supervisors–your keen supervision getting our students to and
from the park.
Student big buddies– thanks for taking such great care of our younger students.

SATISFACTION SURVEY, 2015:
The survey is available for students in Grades 4, 7, 10 and 12, their parents, teachers, and all school staff to
provide feedback on the BC public school experience. Survey results are broadly used to improve education—not only by schools, districts and the Ministry but also by organizations like the Representative for
Children and Youth, BC Stats, and the Ministry of Health.
Completion of the Satisfaction Survey is voluntary and is to be completed online via the e-survey. Parents
of students in Grades 4 & 7 are encouraged to participate in the survey as the results are important in
helping schools identify current strengths and determine areas on which we can focus on for improvement. Higher participation means the results can give a more accurate picture of each school and district.
The survey is an invaluable source of information, and can be completed online in only ten minutes.
A parent may complete a survey for each child in the targeted grades (4 & 7). Parent access to the esurvey is simple and secure and takes only 5 to 10 minutes to complete but will require a logon number
which was sent home earlier this month to Grade 4 and 7 parents. Any computer with internet access will
work to complete this survey.
Grades 4 and 7 students will complete the online survey at school. The site has been extended until May
15th .
For more information, visit http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/welcome.htm

2015-2016 SCHOOL ORGANIZATION:
Bayview staff will soon begin to organize classes for the 2015-16 school year. The professional
staff at the school takes considerable care in determining the placement of students in classes.
There are many factors that are important in this process. It is hoped that the following notes will help parents/
guardians understand how student placement is determined.
The number of teachers allocated to Bayview Elementary is determined by a formula that is established by the Human
Resources Division of the Vancouver Board of Education. The number of students in the school determines the number
of teachers and classes. Sometimes combination classes are an organizational necessity based on student numbers and
contractual agreement. Sometimes the school makes a philosophical choice to have combination classes based on the
cognitive, social, and/or emotional needs of the students.
When we assign students to classes in September, we base it on educational and social criteria. The staff takes pride in
knowing your children and communicating this to you throughout the year. The following are what teachers consider as
we organize classes:
• Academic ability
• Social compatibility
• Behavioural considerations
• Learning styles
• Equal numbers of each gender
• Class group dynamics
• Teaching styles
• Special needs considerations
• Teacher contract guidelines
• Parent program requests
Sometimes parents are able to provide the school with additional important information that should be considered in
determining a student’s placement. If you wish to provide the school with extra information, please send a letter addressed to the principal, Noreen Morris by Friday, June 12.
The information you include in this letter (or email) would focus on some important personal or educational information
that will assist staff with placement decisions rather than being a request for placement with a specific teacher.
Fundamentally, the final decision for student placement is a school-based, professional decision; however, input to help
determine that decision is welcome. If you have questions about the planning for the 2015-2016 school year please do
not hesitate to contact Ms, Morris.
Are You Moving during the Summer? Will you be Here on the First Day of School?
Due to limited space and resources, all student attendance must be counted and verified on the first day,
Tuesday, September, 8 2014; otherwise, their space will be filled by other students on waitlists.
If your child will be returning late to school, please e-mail, [email protected]
We need this information to save a place.
If your child/children will not return to school for next year, please let the office know immediately.
Please phone the school at 604-713-5433.

Update on Seismic Mitigation Program
12
http://www.vsb.bc.ca/seismic-information
Status of Capital Projects - Current and Planned
The VBE is committed to improving the safety of students and staff in the event of an earthquake. In order to achieve
this goal as quickly as possible, the Ministry of Education and the VBE have formed the Vancouver Project Office. The
goal of the Vancouver Project Office is to expedite all VBE seismic projects. This co-governed office will be staffed by professional personnel dedicated to overseeing the seismic projects in Vancouver schools.
Bayview is one of the 16 schools that was scheduled to begin the Project Definition Report (PDR) phase in January
2015. Due to the complexity of seismic upgrade work and the extended time required to complete the previous round of
schools, the Vancouver Board of Education (VBE) has decided to prioritize the first 8 of these schools. Consultants for
these first eight projects have been retained and have commenced work on the Project Definition Report (PDR) phase of
the project. The work in the PDR phase requires approximately 6-12 months to examine all aspects of the project and to
recommend the seismic option needed. When the seismic option is decided on, the school community is informed and
work proceeds to the next phases.
Subject to available resources, the second group of schools identified in the Capital Plan are targeted to begin the PDR
phase in the later part of 2015. Please contact your school Principal if you have further questions.

Construction on Alma May 2015-fall 2015 – Construction is scheduled to replace the separate sewers. The combined sewer system on Alma from W. 4th Avenue to W. 15th was constructed between
1915 and 1926, and is reaching the end of its service life.
Traffic Impacts: Traffic is anticipated to remain open in both directions, with lane and parking
closures to accommodate construction. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained and
majority of sidewalks will remain open for the duration of construction.

BAYVIEW’S INSIDE OUT- STORIES OF IDENTITY PROJECT
This large-scale, global participatory art project, inspired by JR, an artist from Paris and the
recipient of the TED Talk 2011 Prize was a culminating project by Grades 4-7 students and
teachers in celebration of Bayview’s Centennial. The Stories of Identity Project, facilitated by
Angela Brown, the former VSB’s Anti-racism & Diversity Mentor, provided an opportunity for
students to feel represented, validated and empowered through the sharing of their lived experiences, family histories, immigration stories and the unique aspects of their identity of which they
are most proud.
Alas, it is however, time to bid farewell as weather has worn away at this installation. Sometime
soon expect to see our VSB painters power-washing the exterior walls removing the posters and
repainting, returning Bayview’s exterior walls to it’s original historical colours.

Dog Safety: Some dogs are being left alone while tied to the fence or wandering through the
school yard off leash. Please take some time to review the VSB’s Dog’s code, posted on the bright
green signs along the fences. The City Animal Enforcement staff has become more active in this
area to promote dog safety and enforce the bylaws.
Please be mindful that a school yard and community parks are very active places with hundreds of
children playing and moving about. Always keep your dog under voice control and on a tight
leash. Take reasonable steps to ensure your dog does not injure, intimidate or annoy anyone.
Please also understand that some people don’t like dogs or are afraid of dogs.
Be very careful with school age children. Children may put themselves at risk without thinking.
They might be quite unrealistic about dogs and not appreciate the risk of being bitten.
Adults need to keep their
dogs on a tight leash and under voice control. Never
leave your dog unattended.
Dogs are only allowed on School Board property under the conditions noted on the signs. In fact,
the City’s By-Law enforcement staff have the ability to issue fines, should dog owner’s allow their
dogs to be “off leash” on VSB property, or not picking up after their dogs. Thank you for your cooperation and for making our school grounds and playfields safe for all our kids.
Dogs and Safety - A few dog safety tips… from http://www.safekidssafedogs.com
WAGS for Dog Safety
Wait!
Always wait for an adult before approaching a strange dog.
Ask!
Always ask the owner's permission before petting a dog.
Gentle! Be gentle when petting a dog.
Slow!
Dog Owners:
Move slowly when meeting and petting a dog.
http://www.safekidssafedogs.com
√
Never allow a child to scream, yell or run around a dog. Even if the dog and child belongs to you.
√
Keep your dog leashed when in public. If you want to let him run, go to an area designated for off-leash dogs such as a
dog park.
√
Make sure your dog knows the rules of greeting: always sitting calmly. If the dog cannot sit, the dog cannot be greeted.
√
Never let a child walk a dog unsupervised. Even a medium-sized dog can pull down a child or the child may become
frightened and drop the leash.
√
Always supervise children (even teenagers) with dogs. And do not hesitate to reinforce the behaviours from both that
you want.
√
Never force your dog to "say hi" if he is acting wary of a person.
Use every opportunity to teach about dog safety.
