Southern California Edison Opens Third Building
in Innovation Village
Southern California Edison, in association with the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation and Trammell Crow Company, celebrated the
opening of its third building in Innovation Village on Tuesday, July 12.
Innovation Village, which is managed by the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, is a 65-acre research and technology park on
campus-owned land set aside by Cal Poly Pomona for public/private partnership development. The opening of the third
Southern California Edison building completes Phase V of Innovation Village, which is now 65% complete and contains 18 acres
left for development. Southern California Edison is the largest tenant in Innovation Village with 369,000 square feet of space
and approximately 1,200 employees.
During the grand opening, Cal Poly Pomona President Soraya M. Coley highlighted the benefits of having Southern California
Edison as a partner and the valuable support they provide Cal Poly Pomona students and the university.
4
“Southern California Edison has helped advance the
university’s mission by providing internships, hands-on
research opportunities, and most importantly, jobs to
our students,” Coley said during her speech. “Southern
California Edison has gained access to the vast talent pool.
Last year, the company had 59 interns from the university,
and 15 of those interns joined the company as full-time
employees after graduation ... Southern California Edison
employees are also benefitting from this partnership; many
of these employees pursue degrees and other professional
development opportunities here at Cal Poly Pomona.”
Paul J. Grigaux, vice president of Transmission, Substations
and Operations in the Transmission and Distribution
organization at Southern California Edison, discussed the
advantages of opening a third building in Innovation Village.
“[Southern California Edison at Innovation Village] is
strategically located for us as a company; it’s centrally
located,” Grigaux said. “It is also … a significant opportunity
to really expand our partnership to attract talent in our
company.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place once the speeches
were concluded.
Southern California Edison in Innovation Village received
proclamations from Pomona Mayor Elliot Rothman on
behalf of the city of Pomona; Senator Bob Huff on behalf of
the California State Senate, District 29; Senator Connie M.
Leyva on behalf of the California State Senate, District 20;
Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez on behalf of the California State
Senate, District 22; and United States Congressman Ed Royce
on behalf of the United States House of Representatives,
District 39.

Kellogg West Updates Wi-Fi
With the help of the Cal Poly Pomona IT department, Kellogg West
Conference Center & Hotel updated their Wi-Fi and added 17 wireless
access points (WAPs) for better coverage. The new WAPs are capable of
higher speeds, and they increase the density of the Wi-Fi, which allows
more users to sign on without drop of speed.
“Before [the update], when we had a lot of users in one of our meeting
rooms all trying to connect, it would get to the point that nobody could
get onto the Wi-Fi,” says Cameron Edmonds, director of Kellogg West
Conference Center & Hotel. “Now we’re having our returning clients tell
us they don’t have that problem anymore.”
Guests can now expect faster speeds and better coverage in the all of the conference centers and guestrooms.

Cal Poly Pomona Classic Tee for Orientation
is a HIT!
For the 2016 orientation visits, the Bronco Bookstore has modified its strategy. Most
items are usually a blanket 20% off on logo clothing and gifts during orientation; this year,
special merchandise was selected and either value priced or marked down just for the
event. In just a short time, almost all of the Cal Poly Pomona classic tees have sold out
with reorders on the way.
Keep an eye out through the next twelve months for new everyday merchandise and
special-event-specific, limited-time merchandise at the Bronco Bookstore.
Foundation Payroll Deduction Reminder
Just a reminder that faculty and staff can use the Foundation payroll deduction/
employee purchase program to buy computers at the Bronco Bookstore. It’s basically a
no-interest loan, so we encourage you to drop by and check out the amazing selection
we have to offer.
Visit www.BroncoBookstore.com for more information.

Foundation IT Helps Students with Senior Project
Cal Poly Pomona Foundation strives to provide Cal Poly
Pomona students with the tools and experiences they
need to help them thrive after college. The Foundation IT
department recently contributed to student success by
guiding a group of seniors through a quarter-long project
before they graduated in June. The project required them
to develop an in-depth plan, connect with actual vendors,
and present a final comprehensive report.
Foundation IT worked with students in the Computer
Information Systems program for an upper-division
course called Systems Development Project. Foundation
IT requested that the students plan a pilot monitoring
system to track the speed of on-campus food service lines
and provide those wait times online. With the guidance
of Foundation IT, the students researched, evaluated, and
proposed a solution to line monitoring, and contacted
several vendors before deciding on a company that would
fulfill the Foundation’s requirements.
“The project was an excellent learning experience,” says
Matt Fullerton who graduated from Cal Poly Pomona this
past June. “It provided a real-world business problem,
which put us in contact with many different parts of an
organization.”
According to Fullerton, he and his the team acquired new
technical and organizational skills, and learned how to
make high-level decisions.
“It was great learning about various real-life situations
in the industry, both technical and non-technical,”
says Besfort Zymberi, another recent Cal Poly Pomona
graduate.
Throughout the project, Foundation IT guided the team
through their research, helped them make decisions,
and challenged them to consider all options. As a result,
the team decided to partner with SenSource, Inc. and
strategically place a 3D camera system above an
on-campus Subway that is capable of providing ongoing
line tracking via data feed to a Foundation website
dashboard.
Foundation IT and a group of CPP seniors helped install a camera
system at Subway to determine wait times.
“Through its hands-on approach, the project helped me
obtain practical experience that I can use in any career
field,” says Eric Torres who graduated along with Fullerton
and Zymberi.
Once the student project concluded, Foundation IT
decided it would be beneficial to continue with the
installation of the pilot line tracking equipment at the
on-campus Subway.
“When we told the students that we were moving
forward and implementing their project, they were all
really excited about it,” says Randy Townsend, Foundation
director of information technology. “This is something
they can include on their resumes and talk about with
potential employers.”
Many of the former students plan to visit Cal Poly
Pomona again to see the progress of their senior project.
“The program was very successful,” says Townsend. “It
has warranted additional opportunities to work with CIS
students as future classes are enrolled.”
Whether its students from the College of Business
Administration or the College of Agriculture, the
Foundation is committed to helping students achieve
academic success and supplying them with professional
experiences that they can carry into their future careers.

Internships at Innovation Village
Southern California Edison Contributes to Student Success
Innovation Village and its tenants support the mission
of the university and enhance the academic experience
for the campus community. Innovation Village’s largest
tenant, Southern California Edison, strongly supports the
university’s mission and contributes to student success by
offering internships and employment opportunities to Cal
Poly Pomona students.
“Southern California Edison has helped advance the
university’s mission by providing internships, hands-on
research opportunities, and most importantly, jobs to
our students,” Cal Poly Pomona President Soraya M.
Coley said during a recent event. “Last year, the company
had 59 interns from the university, and 15 of those
interns joined the company as full-time employees after
graduation.”
Mary A. McGeeney, a current Cal Poly Pomona student
studying industrial engineering, recently obtained a highly
sought-after internship at Southern California Edison.
“I feel so excited to have an internship for a company that
is so well known and for it to be right on campus!” says
McGeeney.
As McGeeney noted, one of the major benefits for
students working at Innovation Village is the close
proximity to the Cal Poly Pomona campus; this not only
provides students with convenience, but the opportunity
to build valuable relationships.
“As a Cal Poly Pomona student, I have the advantage of
staying in easier contact with the people I am meeting
because of the close location,” says McGeeney. “I think
this will help me find mentors.”
Internships at Innovation Village also help students grow
on various professional levels. According to McGeeney,
she has already seen improvement in her Microsoft Office
and communication skills, and she is learning more about

teamwork and management styles. She also credits her
internship for helping her broaden her connections.
“I enjoy the networking,” says McGeeney. “I meet so
many new people every day and everyone has new advice
for me.”
In 2014, Southern California Edison also donated
$100,000 to Cal Poly Pomona’s Edison International
Women in Engineering Program. This program increases
opportunities for female students like McGeeney by
providing mentoring, guest speakers, support services,
and outreach programs in which engineering students
work with girls in K through 12 schools to show them
what a career in engineering has to offer.
“It is nice to feel supported as a woman in a STEM field,”
expresses Mary. “I appreciate Edison for their generosity
to my campus and for the opportunity to gain experience
and learn from them.”
Every year, numerous students like McGeeney benefit
from internships in Innovation Village. The Cal Poly
Pomona Foundation is proud to contribute to student
success by managing Innovation Village and partnering
with companies like Southern California Edison.
