This warranty does not cover wear and tear. Should a fault develop in your product due to manufacturing or a material defect, we will repair or replace it at our discretion. Disclaimer In almost four decades of skiing and mountaineering I’ve slept outdoors more times than I can remember. On most occasions I’ve relied on a wondrous natural material to ward off the cold and allow me to sleep soundly. That same material has kept me alive on dozens of forays to extreme altitudes, including two oxygen cylinder free climbs to the top of Everest. That material is of course down – without it to fill down suits, jackets and sleeping bags, no lightweight escapade into cold, beautiful wild places would be possible. I’ve owned many different sleeping bags but I’ve never been entirely happy with any of them, they’ve always suffered a few inadequacies, some of which over time have really annoyed me – like snagging zips, poorly fitted hoods, cold spots, day-to-day growing dampness and difficult drawcords. So for a long time at Sea To Summit we have thought about this most basic outdoor necessity and wondered how, by using new materials and a fresh take on design, we could come up with a range of bags that eliminated those problems and delivered much better performance. Now at last I can confidently say we have done that! To celebrate and mark our twentieth year, we bring you the most advanced sleeping bags available – they are lighter, warmer (for their weight), easier to use and combat moisture better than any other bags yet. If the weight and performance of your gear is important to you, I believe our sleeping bags set a new benchmark. All information in this brochure is correct at time of printing. Tim Macartney-Snape 3D NanoShell™ Technology “Our patent pending 3D NanoShell™ is an innovative approach to managing moisture, both internal and external condensation.“ Tim Macartney-Snape To achieve maximum loft and insulation down must be dry and uncompressed. Traditionally down sleeping bags have used coated fabrics to create a water resistant shell protecting the down. The problem with this approach is condensation, hot vapour leaving your body passes through the down, migrating to the shell. While breathable fabrics are generally effective in allowing vapour to pass through a bag, they do not prevent condensation at the dew point on the inside of the shell where down can absorb moisture. Over several days of packing and unpacking a sleeping bag, wet down mixes with dry down spreading the issue further. By the end of a long trip it is not uncommon for a sleeping bag to have decreased in warmth significantly because the down is damp. The Sea To Summit 3D NanoShell™ is a condensation management system that insulates, repels water and improves loft. The 3-Dimensional construction comprises of a high-density weave, 20D polyester outer shell, layered with a non-woven silicone encapsulated condensation barrier. The 20D shell fabric is a highly breathable, water-resistant fabric, treated with a Nano DWR for unparalleled performance in wet and windy conditions 1 . This 2 Nano 3 DWR 4 is the most durable water repellent, lasting more than 100 Super Durable Water Repellency Shell + Condensation Management System 4 washes, providing a water head over 500mm while maintaining breathability in excess of 3,500 g/m2/24hr. 3D NanoShell™ provides a barrier between the cold shell fabric and the down. When hot vapour passes through the down, it then enters the non-woven condensation barrier, before exiting the breathable shell fabric 1 2 . Any 3 4 condensation that forms under the shell surface is separated from the down by this condensation 1 barrier 2 3 . Due 4 to its hydrophobic nature, this barrier promotes fast evaporation expelling moisture to the outside preserving dry and fully 1 lofted 2 down 3 4 . Nano DWR attaches nano sized water repellant particles to the fibres of the fabric creating a water repellant finish that does not rely on heavy coatings inhibiting breathability and weight. 2D NanoShell™ lasts more than 100 washes, providing repellency of over 300mm and offering breathability in excess of 6,500 g/m2/24hr. Despite advancements in modern fibre technology, down is still the best insulator warmth for weight. Down forms the lightweight undercoating of birds, insulating them in very cold environments. The down we use is a by-product of the duck and goose meat industry. Like most natural products, down quality depends on many variables; predominantly the species, the feather content and the age. The best quality down is sourced from older birds, consisting of large plumes and clusters that create hundreds of thousands of tiny pockets, trapping body heat to provide unmatched insulation. 850+ Fill Power (Loft) Goose Down is the very best quality down available for sleeping bags. It provides the highest insulation for its weight and will last the longest. Sea To Summit 850+ Loft series bags are all filled with Eastern European Mother Goose 850+ loft down. We extensively test every batch of down to ensure the quality is consistently above 850 Loft. Eastern European Goose Down is well renowned for its high quality, achieving the best loft, with the largest clusters that are strong and resilient, lasting for years. All 850+ loft Sea To Summit sleeping bags are sold with an International Down Feather Laboratory (IDFL) certificate that identifies the exact Fill Power of the goose down used. We guarantee these bags are filled with goose down that exceeds 850 Fill Power in accordance to the International Down Feather Bureau (IDFB) standard. Not only does down have the best warmth to weight ratio, it is also the most durable sleeping bag insulation. If kept dry and occasionally washed using the recommended method, it will last a lifetime. Everyone sleeps differently; people areRating very warm sleepers while others feel the cold easily. EN13537some Temperature Although the EN13537 standard does not identify a precise temperature a tested sleeping bag is suitable for, it does provide an industry standardized temperature range that a typical user can refer C | 34˚ F conditions their bag will be most -22˚comfortable C | -8˚F in. to as a 1˚ guide for the -5˚C | 23˚F comfort lower limit EN13537 Temperature Rating 1˚C | 34˚F -5˚C | 23˚F -22˚C | -8˚F comfort lower limit extreme Comfort EN13537 Temperature Rating the temperature at which a standard woman can expect to sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. C| F -22˚C | -8˚F Lower Limit the temperature at which a standard man can sleep for eight comfort lower limit extreme hours in a curled position without waking. Extreme 650 Loft Duck Down In the Sea To Summit Trek series, our 650 Fill Power duck down is a high quality insulation that sets the benchmark for sleeping bags in its class. All of our 650 Fill Power down is tested in accordance to the IDFB standard. extreme The EN13537 standard provides three temperature levels to guide a consumer in their choice: 1˚C | 34˚F Loft Loft is a measure of volume for a given weight of down. It is used to describe the quality of down, relating directly to the insulating performance. High loft down is warmer for a given weight than low loft down. Higher lofting down will fill a larger volume of space for a given weight, as a result, less down weight is required to fill each baffle in a sleeping bag. This translates to a lighter sleeping bag. The most common measure of loft is called Fill Power. 650 Fill Power implies that one ounce of this down will loft to fill a volume of 650 cubic inches. 850 Fill Power implies that one ounce of this down will loft to fill a volume of 850 cubic inches. EN13537 is a European standard for sleeping bag temperature rating. -5˚ 23˚ EN13537 Temperature Rating the minimum temperature at which a standard woman can remain for six hours without risk of death from hypothermia, -5˚frostbite C | 23˚ F possible! 1˚C | 34˚Falthough -22˚C | -8˚F is still comfort lower limit extreme The EN13537 temperature tests use a thermal manikin with heaters and temperature sensors to measure the insulation value of a sleeping bag. This manikin is placed inside the sleeping bag and the test is conducted in a temperature-controlled chamber. A range of comfort temperatures are derived from converting the measure of energy required to maintain homeostasis in the manikin to a temperature. Manikin homeostasis is defined as a constant state of 32˚C / 89˚F. We recommend you use our EN quoted ratings as a guide and a comparative reference to other EN tested bags. Comfort Limit Based on a stand having a comfor Zips Differential cut shell Allows down to loft outwards 3D Side wall 3D Side wall Side block baffle Zip Draft tube Reverse differential cut Inside lining conforms to your body profile Differential Cut Shell & Lining Since down lofts best when it is uncompressed, we use a differential cut shell and lining. The top shell of all Sea To Summit sleeping bags is cut larger than the lining. This creates space in between for the down to loft fully. In the bottom of the bag, we use a reverse differential cut. By increasing the size of the lining relative to the shell, down lofts up to fill the voids around your body, torso, legs and the small of your back. Trapping heat close to the skin is essential for efficient warm sleeping. Offset Baffles Offset baffle construction provides a stable structure that allows the down to loft to the correct density and minimizes loss of heat through seams. This improves thermal efficiency of the sleeping bag without adding unnecessary weight of complicated baffle construction. Offset baffle construction All Sea To Summit sleeping bags use YKK zips. The Alpine, Traverse and Trek series use YKK #5 reverse zips, this allows you to un-zip the sleeping bag from top and bottom for temperature regulation. We have put more down in the top of the bag, this is most effective because the down here isn’t compressed by your body weight. The exact ratio of down fill must be matched to the shape of a sleeping bag. The Micro bags’ slim fit forms a tight cocoon around the body, when you toss and turn at night, the bag rotates with you. For this style of bag it is best to use a 55/45 (top/ bottom) fill ratio. In the Trek, Traverse and Alpine bags a 60/40 fill ratio is more suitable. These bags are a generous cut and have room inside to rotate without the bag following. Anatomically Tapered Box Foot The natural position your feet will take when supine is relaxed at ease and slightly stretched out. The anatomical cut box foot tapers in three directions. There is vertical taper from the toe to the heal creating a slant that matches the relaxed form of your feet. Along the outer edge of your foot there is a trapezoidal taper that provides a form fit, keeping down close to your extremities so they don’t get frostbite. From the top view, there is an outward taper from the ankles to the feet. This creates room for your toes to have great circulation and traps warmth in the foot box. This design exists in both the Alpine and Traverse bags. Alpine, Traverse and Trek bags are fitted with a fixed zip length for all sizes. These bags can be zippered together in any combination of model and size. The Micro series use a lightweight YKK #3 zip. Micro’s can be zipped together with other Micro’s. Anti-Snag Zip System Neatly hidden in the draft tube is a super high-density 210D poly cloth. This fabric is exceptionally stiff and was originally engineered for use in high performance race sails. The lightweight, durable, stiff finish provides an excellent zipper anti-snag. Side Block Baffle & Fill Ratio The loft is optimised using a side block baffle construction. This allows the bags to be filled with a different ratio of down in the top and bottom. Down insulates best when it is able to reach its full loft. The stiff anti-snag lines the draft tube and lining fabric preventing loose fabric from snagging as you zip the bag open and closed Fabrics – NanoShell™ Hood Design Pack - Store - Wash NanoShell™ fabric is a high-density weave, 20D polyester ripstop with a Nano DWR finish. The Nano DWR is a surface treatment that makes the fabric extremely water repellent, without compromising breathability. Nano DWR is much more durable than standard DWR as it uses nano sized particles of water repellent to treat the fabric. These very small particles can attach to the fabric fibres in much greater quantity and adhere better, therefore lasting longer. The Alpine and Traverse series use 3D compound differential cut patterning, this forms a shape that naturally traps warmth were it is most essential. The Micro and Trek series use a 2-Dimensional cut. These hoods easily pull into a form fitted profile using the dual-adjustment drawcord. Using the pack - store - wash system supplied with all Sea To Summit sleeping bags, you will ensure maximum loft from your bag. Fabrics – Lining 850+ Loft Series The lining fabric of the 850+ series is a high-density weave, 20D polyester with a cire finish and soft touch hand feel. This material is breathable, light and incredibly durable for its weight. Fabrics – 2D PermaShell™ Internal Drawcords Around the perimeter of the hood an internally constructed drawcord tunnel ensures the cord is buried deep within the down. When drawn closed the hood forms a comfortable seal around your face. A low profile Nifco dual cord adjuster is used for comfort and durability, offering a versatile fit. The hood closure uses a non-stretch cord for refined adjustment, while the neck collar uses an elastic cord to stretch with you as you move in the bag. The lining material is a high-density weave, 40D nylon. This fabric is engineered for comfort using a high filament count to achieve a soft surface and silky hand feel. Coats Poly Core Thread For over 20 years Sea To Summit have been using Coats threads. Coats are an industry leader, they make the highest quality thread. For sleeping bags we use a Poly Core thread. This is very strong and abrasion resistant. If wet this thread swells in the stitch hole therefore reducing water entry through stitching and down loss through seams. 1. A Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil® compression sack for easy packing 2. An oversized mesh storage cell to ensure the down maintains optimal loft during long periods of storage 3. A large cotton laundry sack to protect your bag when laundering Use the Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil® compression sack to pack and compress your sleeping bag for an expedition. Stuff your sleeping bag in from the foot first, tighten the drawcord and gently compress the stuff sack. To ensure the best performance from your sleeping bag, do not store under compression for long periods. The mesh storage cell has been specifically designed to store your sleeping bag in between trips. Air out your sleeping bag thoroughly before storing and do not store damp. Store in a clean dry place. This storage cell will help maintain the loft of your sleeping bag. 2D PermaShell™ fabric used in our Trek series bags is a high-density weave, 33D Nylon with a DWR finish. This material is highly vapour permeable and down proof by construction therefore it does not rely on coatings that reduce breathability and add weight. Fabrics – Lining 650 Loft Series Sea To Summit started as a company building sleeping bag liners and stuff sacks. We have the most comprehensive range of sleeping bag accessories in the world. To help you care for your sleeping bag and store it properly, all Sea To Summit sleeping bags are supplied with three storage sacks. Security Pocket A large Security pocket is located inside the chest area, it can fit a passport and wallet or be used to stow your electronic devices. Anti-snag coupled with a YKK Invisible Zip ensures an ultra low profile for comfort against the skin. The cotton laundry sack has your sleeping bag washing instructions printed on it.
