SOME BENEFITS
OF WRAPPING
HOW TO WRAP
• It can help small babies to develop a more
settled sleep pattern.
1. Place baby
to left or
right of
centre, top
of wrap
level with
neck.
• Older unsettled babies may sleep better if
wrapped firmly.
• Babies whose sleep is disturbed by colic or
reflux can be more settled when wrapped.
This is one method for safe wrapping
4. Bring larger
edge across
and tuck
under baby.
• Wrapping helps to prevent random arm
movements which can disturb their sleep.
• Babies with stiff or floppy limbs may benefit
from being wrapped (talk to your local child
health nurse or physiotherapist).
2. Fold arms
across
chest and
hold.
3. Bring shorter
edge across
arm and
tuck firmly
under baby.
5. The bottom of the wrap can be folded
under baby or the mattress. Some people
prefer to gently twist the bottom of the
wrap and tuck it under the mattress.
SAFE
WRAPPING
• For wrapping to be effective it needs to
be firm. The recommended fabrics are
muslin or light cotton sheet or wrap.
Bigger, more active babies may need
a cotton sheet.

your baby contact your local babies and
infants health centre.

• Bunny rugs and blankets are not as safe as
they may cause over-heating.
• Ensure wrap does not cover baby’s face.
