Welcome to the Mid Cape
his guide to the Mid Cape represents a first-year collaboration between
the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Yarmouth Area
Chamber of Commerce to produce a publication which will better serve
visitors to our two communities.
T
Our main objective has been to provide useful information to enhance your vacation experience. With this in mind, we have included an overview of our lodging
and dining members in grid form to provide a quick reference of size, amenities
and price points to help simplify your choice on where to stay and where to eat
during your Mid Cape vacation. Likewise, we have provided information on what
to do, where to go, what to see and side trips providing each family member with
a memory to take home and a reason to return.
While vacationers and travelers have historically considered Cape Cod to be
a summer playground, more and more are realizing its value as a year-round
destination. Whether the Saint Patrick’s Day parade in early March (now a
perennial favorite), the Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks, or the
Christmas strolls and holiday happenings throughout December, there is never
a shortage of things to do.
This year, 2011, is an important Cape Cod milestone, as it marks the 50th
anniversary of the Cape Cod National Seashore, a U.S. National Park, which came
about directly through the efforts of President John F. Kennedy, whose heart never
strayed far from his home in Hyannisport. As residents and visitors alike celebrate
this important year-long event, we encourage you to stop by the Salt Pond Visitor
Center in Eastham and the JFK Hyannis Museum to feel history come alive and
discover why Cape Cod is so special to us all – even Presidents.
There is so much to see and do on Cape Cod that we could not possibly cover it all
in a single publication, so please use this 2011 Guide as a starting point for your
vacation. For additional information, visit our websites,

TO ROUTE 6 EAST
From New York City and points south:
Follow I-95 North to exit 20 then take
I-195 East to I-495/Mass Rte. 25 South
and go over the Bourne Bridge. At rotary
take the 3rd right onto Sandwich Road
and follow (approx. 4 miles) to first set of
lights; take a right onto Route 6 East.
From Albany & Springfield:
Follow Rte. 90 East (Mass Pike) to
exit11A, then Rte. 495/25 South, then
follow directions from Rte. 25 to Rte. 6.
From Boston:
Follow Rte. 93 South (becomes Rte. 3)
over the Sagamore Bridge. which becomes
Rte 6. Once over the bridge, follow Rte 6
directions below.
Route 6 Directions:
Follow Rte. 6 East to Exit 6 for Hyannis
and Rte. 132, Exit 7 for West Yarmouth
(Rte. 28) and Yarmouth Port (Rte. 6A),

whether for a day, a week, or a lifetime.
Yarmouth’s close proximity to Hyannis,
and its central location on Cape Cod,
has made it particularly popular to
vacationers. Lodging choices for any
budget abound in Yarmouth with historic
Sea Captains’ homes offering bed &
breakfast, to oceanfront resorts, and
everything in between.

Like the Town of Barnstable, each
Yarmouth village offers it’s own unique
New England experience. Each village
boasts its share of beautiful homes
and historic assets.
Yarmouth Port, preserved and stately,
centers along the Old King’s Highway
known as Route 6A. A one-mile
stretch along the tree lined route is the
Captains’ Mile. The largest concentration of former Sea Captains homes
in the country. Along the way are a
number of historic sites such as the
Edward Gorey House and the only
known Sea Captain’s House preserved
in its original state and open to the
public, the Captain Bangs Hallet House.
The house is operated by the Historical
Society of Old Yarmouth. The village
of Yarmouth Port is situated on the
northside hugging Cape Cod Bay.

The Boardwalk at Gray’s Beach offers
the most spectacular sunsets on the Bay.
West Yarmouth borders the village of
Hyannis and is home to Seagull Beach,
the largest of Yarmouth’s 15 public
beaches. Seagull offers a full beach
experience and plenty of room to spread
that beach blanket. Several smaller
beaches along Nantucket Sound are
perfect for families with small children.
Family attractions and casual restaurants
dot the main route through the village,
giving vacationers along Route 28
plenty to do.
South Yarmouth is home to much of
the town’s oceanfront lodging. South
Shore Drive has 11 different resort-style
lodging choices, six beaches, and an
award-winning restaurant with an ice
cream shop. Back on Route 28, the
village offers many shopping venues
along with a multitude of dining choices.
Perhaps one of the best features of the
village is its many family attractions.

adventure golf, arcades, and go karts
the Cape has to offer.

Gosnold surveyed the shores of Cape
Cod, in particular the area now
called Hyannis, a community rich with
connections to the sea. Of course, at
that time, the area was inhabited by
the sea-savvy Mattacheese Indians led
by Sachem Yanno, for whom the village
of Hyannis is named. Soon, after that
first visit, English settlers incorporated
the Town of Barnstable in 1639. For
the next 300 years maritime related
industries such as salt works, sail
making, whaling, ocean transport and
fishing dominated local life.

Today, Hyannis continues its connection
to the sea with an active harbor
bustling with ferry travelers to islands,
deep sea fishing departures, sight-seeing
cruises and traditional small commercial fishing fleets. Flanking the harbor
is a collection of juried artisan shanties
where you can meet artists while they
create their work.
Just up from the harbor is Hyannis
Main Street, the hub of activity for all
of Cape Cod and home to over 25
restaurants. Main Street is centered
around the Village Green where
community events bring together
residents and visitors alike. Bordering
the green is the John F. Kennedy
Hyannis Museum and the Cape Cod
Baseball League Hall of Fame. The
Hyannis
Museum features the “Cape Years” of
President John F. Kennedy and offers
a glimpse into private family times and
the President’s love of life by the sea.
The opening of the Hyannis Youth and
Community Center provides residents
and visitors with a host of new and
exciting entertainment options throughout the year.
Hyannis is one of seven villages of the
Town of Barnstable, each with its own
distinct New England character.
Marstons Mills is home to pond-side
neighborhoods with manicured lawns
and a challenging golf course. Barnstable
Village hosts the county seat of government along with one of the nation’s
oldest libraries housing a treasure
trove of Cape Cod genealogy. Cotuit,
Centerville and Osterville offer some
of the most spectacular ocean views of
Nantucket Sound and quaint village
centers, while on the north side, West
Barnstable features memorable vistas
like Sandy Neck, the Great Marshes,
Cape Cod Bay and Barnstable Harbor.

The Taylor-Bray Farm was originally
settled in 1639. Ownership changed
hands many times until 1987, when

Provincetown Heritage Museum,

of town streets and wharf are filled

great restaurants, whale watching
tours, dune tours, and a variety of
historic homes and gardens.

making the Cape Cod National
Seashore a reality. Portions of land
from the towns of Orleans, Eastham,
Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown
make up 27,700 acres of land to be
preserved in its natural state and offer
visitors approximately 30 miles of the
finest seashore on the
Atlantic Coast.

When the Pilgrims landed in
1620, Plymouth became one of
the first European settlements in
North America. Today there is
much information remaining to
explain what life was like in the
17th century—museums, houses,
landmarks and monuments. Plymouth’s
most famous landmarks are Plymouth
Rock and Plimoth Plantation, a living
museum of the Plymouth colony in
the 1600s, complete with interpreters
in period dress. In addition, the
Mayflower II, a reproduction of the
small ship that made the crossing,
sits in the harbor and is open to
visitors.

irst and foremost, the Towns
of Barnstable and Yarmouth
possess many miles of splendid
saltwater and freshwater beaches.
In Barnstable, Sandy Neck and
Barnstable Harbor Beaches offer many
miles of dunes, beach grasses and
marshland. On the south side,
renowned Craigville Beach along with
Orrin Keyes, Sea Street Beach and
the sheltered Veteran’s Beach extend
along the warm waters of Nantucket
Sound, while Kalmus Beach has
become popular for board sailing.
In Yarmouth, the Nantucket Sound
beaches along South Shore Drive in
South Yarmouth as well as Sea Gull
Beach in West Yarmouth offer wide
expanses of beautiful sand for walking
and sunbathing. Lewis Bay in West
Yarmouth is great for families with
children, as the beaches are small and
there is no surf. On Cape Cod Bay, at
Gray’s Beach in Yarmouth Port, visitors
can search for clams in the tidal inlets,
walk the boardwalk that stretches over
the marsh and picnic on benches in
a secluded grove.
The entire cape is considered a fishing
mecca. Many charter boats depart
daily from Hyannis Harbor and Bass
River to catch cod, striped bass or
flounder. Surfcasting is also popular
along the beaches and jetties of both
towns. You will need a freshwater or
saltwater license. See Fresh &
Saltwater Fishing on Page 47.
Looking for spectator sports? The Cape
Cod Baseball League is the No.1 rated
summer collegiate baseball league in
the country. See pages 50-51 for some
history and a complete 2011 schedule.
If you are looking for some active outdoor family fun, the Mid-Cape offers
bike paths, playgrounds, tennis courts,
golf courses, mini-golf, go-karts, trampolines and batting cages throughout
both towns, as well as bowling alleys
with arcades in downtown Hyannis
and on Route 28 in South Yarmouth.
As you travel along Route 28 in
Yarmouth, Route 132, and Main
Street in Hyannis, keep your eyes open
for what the Mid-Cape has to offer.

n summer 2011, the Cape Cod
Baseball League returns to the
diamond for its 127th season.
With 10 teams competing, you’ll see
some of the country’s top collegiate
players as they hone their skills; and
keep your eyes peeled for some of the
talent sure to dominate the major
leagues in the near future.

The Cape Cod Baseball League’s
pedigree extends back to 1885, when
individual town teams competed. In
1923, the teams organized into a formal league and, in the decades since,
the CCBL has evolved into the premier collegiate summer baseball

Chatham, Cotuit, Falmouth, Harwich,
Hyannis, Orleans, Wareham and
Yarmouth-Dennis. This year, over
1,000 former Cape Leaguers will
compete at all levels of professional
baseball, including some of the best
players in the Majors. Standouts
include two-time National League
Cy Young Award-winner Tim
Lincecum, National League Rookie of
the Year Buster Posey, and Gold Glove
first baseman Mark Texeira, plus current
Boston Red Sox players Jason Varitek,
American League All-Star Kevin
Youkilis, and Jacoby Ellsbury. Be
sure to visit the Cape Cod Baseball
League Hall of Fame located in the
JFK Hyannis Museum.
The town of Barnstable has two
franchises…Cotuit Kettleers, who
play at Elizabeth Lowell Park, and
Hyannis Harbor Hawks, with McKeon
Park as its home venue. The YarmouthDennis Red Sox play at Red Wilson
Field in South Yarmouth.
Following a 44-game regular season,
eight teams make the post-season
playoffs. Each subsequent playoff
series is a best-of-3, with the winners
of the East and West Divisions meeting in the finals. Last year the Cotuit
Kettleers bested the Y-D Red Sox 2
games to 1 for the championship.

Hyannis Golf Club is the site of the
final round for some of Cape Cod’s
major golf events: the Cape Cod Open,
the Cape Cod Senior Open, and the
always-popular “Fordie’s Shootout.”
Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf
Course (often referred to as “The
Fairgrounds”) has hosted the
Massachusetts Public Links
Championship and has been a
qualifying site for the U.S. Women’s
Open and the U.S. Senior Open.

iking throughout the Cape is a popular activity with a variety of trails
designed to meet every cyclist’s level of ability. Bikers enjoy views of
quintessential Cape Cod, including historic sights, sandy beaches,
playgrounds, lighthouses and more while they ride the scenic trails. Bike trail maps,
brochures and other information is available at all Visitor Information Centers.
YARMOUTH BIKE TRAIL
The 3-mile long Yarmouth Bike Trail
runs from Higgins Crowell Road to the
Park at Old Townhouse Road, with an
additional 1.5 miles from the park to
Long Pond Drive along Forest Road. The
park features a playground, soccer and
baseball fields, basketball courts and
public restrooms. Plenty of parking is
available at the park.
CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL
The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs for 26
miles through the towns of Dennis,
Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham
and Wellfleet. Its paved surface, few
hills, and well-marked automobile
crossings make it ideal for cyclists.
The trail also has a wide unpaved
shoulder on one side to accommodate
horseback riding, walkers, and runners.
There are many opportunities to get
off the trail to visit beaches, ponds and
salt marshes. Public restrooms can be

found at Nickerson State Park, the Salt
Pond Visitors Center at Cape Cod
National Seashore and the National
Seashore Headquarters. If you do not
have a bike, rentals are available at
many points along the way.
CHATHAM BIKE TRAIL
Branching off from the Cape Cod Rail
Trail at a spectacular bicycle rotary, the
Chatham Bike Trail extends 8 miles to
the center of Chatham. Cyclists can
enjoy quaint Harwich center as well as
such landmarks as Chatham Light, the
Coast Guard Station and the Chatham
Fish Pier. Car parking is available along
the route.
CAPE COD CANAL BIKE PATHS
The Cape Cod Canal Bike Paths run
14 miles along both sides of the Canal,
enabling cyclists to view not only the
man-made Canal, but also the boats
and ships that pass through it. Benches

on both sides of the Canal.
SHINING SEA BIKEWAY
The Shining Sea Bikeway, the only
Falmouth Bike Route solely dedicated
to bike and foot traffic, is a 10.7 mile
paved pathway that weaves through
four of Falmouth’s eight villages from
Woods Hole to North Falmouth.
This bikeway, the name of which
honors Falmouth native Katharine Lee
Bates, author of the song “America the
Beautiful” with its line “and crown thy
good with brotherhood from sea to
shining sea,” is unique in that it is the
only bike path that skirts the seashore.

he arts are in full swing
throughout the year in the
Mid Cape. Audiences enjoy
Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and
Cape Cod Ballet performances at the
and major theater productions at the
Barnstable Comedy Club on Route 6A,
which is New England’s oldest amateur
theater group. Cape Cod is renowned
for artists’ colonies and many galleries
showcase the works of local and regional
artists. Fine and performing art classes
and lectures are offered at the Cape
Cod Community College, the Cultural
Center of Cape Cod and the Cape
Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts.
Summer performances flourish in July
and August, including a packed schedule at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in
Hyannis, which primarily features
musical concerts and comedy, and
the Cape Playhouse in Dennis which
offers more traditional theater.
Special events are held year-round at
the Cotuit Center for the Arts as well

as the Cultural Center of Cape Cod
in South Yarmouth.
Major happenings that people flock
to include: The Figawi Race Weekend
in May featuring the boat race
between Hyannis and Nantucket; the
June Father’s Day Car Show on Main
Street in Hyannis; and a perennial
favorite, the Cape Cod Chowder Fest.
The entire Mid Cape welcomes the
Fourth of July with parades and fireworks that can be seen from West
Yarmouth beaches to Hyannis Harbor.

free Monday night concerts held in
July and August at Mattacheese
School in West Yarmouth and at
Aselton Park and the Hyannis Village
Green in downtown Hyannis where
