Bayfield Foods Cooperative Here is a Sneak Peek at Next Week 7.13 * Greetings from Heritage Acres! This week we want to introduce you to our two favorite animals on our farm; Zola and Zeus. They are our beloved Great Pyrenees dogs. Zola and Zeus are the first animals to greet visitors on the farm. Many people are apprehensive to get close to them because of their large statVEGGIE BOXES: ure and loud bark. However, they cannot be denied because they will Garlic Scapes, Broccoli // River bother you until you pet them. Zola and Zeus stand about 2 feet tall and Road Farm each weigh about 98lbs. They have fluffy white/beige coats and a friendSugar Snap Peas, Broccoli, To- ly personality. Zola is 2 years old and Zeus is just over a year. Together mato or Cucumber// Great Oak the two of them play a very important role on the farm. They are the ultiFarm mate protectors. They patrol the property and ward off predators such as wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and skunks. Last summer, we lost a Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Cilantro or significant amount of chickens to an unknown predator. It was just a Fennel/ Yoman Farm matter of time before the pair learned that their new enemies were hawks and eagles. This summer Zola and Zeus have their eyes on the sky during the day, and we are happy to report that the chickens are safe. MEAT BOXES: * Please note these are subject to change Ground Beef + Beef Steaks/ Hidden-Vue Farms + Moonlight Meadows + Griggs Cattle Co. Assorted Pork // Maple Hill Farm PLUS ITEMS: Honey // Great Oak Farm Bakery // Starlit Kitchen Fruit: Strawberries As mentioned previously Zeus and Zola are Great Pyrenees. The breed is considered a “livestock guardian dog.” Their best attributes include: loyalty to the animals or people they protect, independent thinking, strong will, fearless, and affection. They have a double layer coat; the first layer is both fluffy and insulating. The second coarser layer provides water protection. This coat provides excellent protection and warmth in the winter. In the summer time there is no need to shave them, because the fur also traps cool air in. Traditionally Great Pyrenees have been used to protect sheep, but they will bond with whatever animal they spend time with. Our pair enjoys spending time in puddles with the pigs, lying in the clover with the chickens, and frolicking with the sheep.
