Summer is here and things
are looking good folks! The
first of the greenhouse sweet
peppers are sizing up and
should be in your boxes in
about two weeks. Greenhouse
tomatoes are standing four feet
tall now and have a heavy set of
maters. Don’t know about you,
but I can’t wait for that first

bread! The broccoli crop is
right on schedule, thankfully
making it through the extremely
wet month of June. Hope you
are ready for some broccoli in
your meals. Between River
Road Farm and Great Oak
Farm we should have you covered on the broccoli front for
the coming weeks ahead. Garlic
scapes are here again! These
tasty little curly cues are the
flower shoot of the garlic plant
that we snap off to encourage
larger head size. The harvest of
the scapes signals that the garlic
harvest is only a few weeks away. Garlic scapes are great chopped fresh in place
or addition to onions and added to lettuce salads, pasta salad, and chicken salad
sandwiches, steam them like green beans and cover in butter, add them to any
sauté, or cover in olive oil and toss them on the grill. To see some photos of the
latest on the farm check us out on Facebook at:

Here is a Sneak Peek
at Next Week 7.13 *
Greetings from Heritage Acres!
This week we want to introduce you to our two favorite animals
on our farm; Zola and Zeus. They are our beloved Great Pyrenees dogs.
Zola and Zeus are the first animals to greet visitors on the farm. Many
people are apprehensive to get close to them because of their large statVEGGIE BOXES:
ure and loud bark. However, they cannot be denied because they will

each weigh about 98lbs. They have fluffy white/beige coats and a friendSugar Snap Peas, Broccoli, To- ly personality. Zola is 2 years old and Zeus is just over a year. Together
mato or Cucumber// Great Oak the two of them play a very important role on the farm. They are the ultiFarm
mate protectors. They patrol the property and ward off predators such as
wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and skunks. Last summer, we lost a

significant amount of chickens to an unknown predator. It was just a

matter of time before the pair learned that their new enemies were hawks
and eagles. This summer Zola and Zeus have their eyes on the sky during
the day, and we are happy to report that the chickens are safe.

As mentioned previously Zeus and Zola are Great Pyrenees. The
breed is considered a “livestock guardian dog.” Their best attributes include: loyalty to the animals or people they protect, independent thinking,
strong will, fearless, and affection. They have a double layer coat; the
first layer is both fluffy and insulating. The second coarser layer provides
water protection. This coat provides excellent protection and warmth in
the winter. In the summer time there is no need to shave them, because
the fur also traps cool air in. Traditionally Great Pyrenees have been used
to protect sheep, but they will bond with whatever animal they spend
time with. Our pair enjoys spending time in puddles with the pigs, lying
in the clover with the chickens, and frolicking with the sheep.
