PG&E’S CERTIFIED AQUATIC
EQUIPMENT INSTALLER
(CAEI) COURSE
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has once
again taken the lead in a matter that has become an
issue to more and more electric utilities. As more and
more energy efficient products become available and
get installed, correct installation of those products
becomes more and more important. Because of the
proliferation of swimming pools (over 350,000), in its
territory, PG&E recognized this issue with pool/spa
equipment installations early. PG&E’s Gary Fernstrom
has led its effort to develop a training course to
address the issue. PG&E’s Ryan Halsey, Program
Manager, engaged FPSIE to present four (4) pilot
presentations of the Certified Aquatic Energy
Installers (CAEI) course during the fourth quarter of
2012. Equipment manufacturers were invited to
participate to provide information to students about
training opportunities available for any unique
aspects of their energy efficient equipment and to give
a brief training session on their equipment. There is
an agenda for the course on page 3 of this newsletter
which shows the class schedule as well as the course
curriculum.
Because of PG&E’s desire to increase its contractor
base by adding more pool/spa professionals, the pilot
course presentations debuted at the FPSIE Education
1 The Foundation
Center in Sacramento and at General Pool and Spa
Supply Branch locations in Stockton, Sunnyvale and
Santa Rosa. This worked well; 118 students enrolled
and completed the four course presentations. The
vast majority of the enrollees were pool/spa
professionals and all but a handful had not previously
participated in PG&E’s rebate program.
The CAEI course students were all given “course
evaluation” forms to complete at the conclusion of
each presentation. And, while these are still trickling
in to us, via USPS, fax etc..., the ones received to date
have been overwhelmingly positive, (examples: “Very
well done, thank you.” “Good class - always learn new
things.” “Exceptional class”). Professor FPSIE,
A.K.A.: Michael Orr, wishes to thank all the students
attending all the presentations for their participation
and special thanks to those responding by completing
the evaluation form.
PG&E has expressed its willingness to allow FPSIE to
present the CAEI course in venues outside its territory
should other utilities wish to adopt similar training. As
a foot note: PG&E expects that by 2014 this training
(or equivalent training) will be required of contractors
participating in its rebate program. Photographs of
training in progress may be seen on page 4.
Larry Gelhaus passed away recently at the age of 79,
after valiantly fighting a lung related illness. Larry
began his career in the pool industry in 1954, when he
accepted a job with Landon Pools as a service
technician on a pool route. Later that year, Larry’s
brother Clayton, also took a pool service technician
position with Paddock Pools when he finished his
service commitment with the Air Force. They soon
realized they were using their own vehicles and tools
so they decided to start a business of their own.
Between the two brothers, they had developed a loyal
clientele and also had many potential customers
through their brother Clark, a swim instructor in “The
Family Gelhaus Backyard Pool.” In 1955 in Walnut
Creek the brothers formed a partnership and started
Catalina Pool Service.
In 1960, they dissolved the partnership – with Clayton
keeping the service business and Larry opening the
Larry Gelhaus Pool Supply of Lafayette, California. As
a family business, the entire Gelhaus family worked at
the company store, until its sale to his employees in
1977. However, his sons’ legacy and future success
stayed rooted in the industry Larry had brought them
into with the pool supply store.
Services for Lawrence George Gelhaus will be held on
Friday, January 18, 2013 at 1:00PM at the Oakmont
Memorial Park & Mortuary located at 2099 Reliez
Valley Road, Lafayette, California, 94549. For more
information visit www.oakmontmortuary.com. A
gathering will follow immediately after the service at
the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations
be made in Larry Gelhaus' name to either the
American Lung Association and/or FPSIE, Inc.

From left to right, FPSIE’s Michael Orr, Morwenna
McKinley, SMUD’s Paula Robertson and Best Pool
Supply’s Dave Stacey.
Morwenna McKinley of Sacramento, California
was the Grand Prize winner at the Sacramento
Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Customer
Service Seminar in June 2012. That Grand Prize
was a V-Green variable speed pool pump motor
donated by Century®, a subsidiary of RegalBeloit Corporation, a leader in innovative
electric motors to the pool/spa industry. SMUD
is on a quest promoting energy efficiency to the
50,000 plus pool/spa owners in its territory and
has partnered with the Foundation for Pool and
Spa Industry Education (FPSIE) towards this
end. Century® is on a quest to show the world
how its V-Green motors can reduce energy costs
in the operation of pools and spas. FPSIE
brought SMUD and Century® together and is
working with them to help make their goals
synergistic.
Morwenna, who is a disabled veteran and new,
first time pool owner, attended the SMUD
Customer Service Seminar to merely learn more
about her pool and how she might be able to
make it more energy efficient without any idea
that there was to be such a prize available. After
learning about variable speed pumps/motors
during the seminar and then actually winning
one, left her speechless. When FPSIE told Best
Pool Supply's Dave Stacey about Morwenna's
good fortune and the need to get the motor
installed, he volunteered to do the installation
for her at "no-charge." During the installation
of the V-Green motor, Dave noted that the pump
seal had been leaking for some time and
remarked that: "It’s a miracle that the water
hasn't gotten in to the motor and shorted it
out." At his juncture Morwenna became
convinced that: "There must be Divine
intervention involved in me winning this motor."
Best Pool Supply, Inc., founded in 1972, is a
Sacramento institution.
