FPSIE ANNOUNCES
APRIL 2011 EDITION
WE SADLY BID FAREWELL TO
A CALIFORNIA INDUSTRY ICON
Frank Geremia Jr.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s Paula Robertson, far left, and Brooks Hillian, far right, presenting SMUD’s
2011 contribution to FPSIE’s Michael Orr, center, Carole Dittmer and Brian Long. FPSIE has budgeted SMUD’s
entire 2011 contribution for the Debbie Meyer Swim School makeover project, its most ambitious project to date.
SMUD CONTINUES TO SUPPORT
FPSIE PROJECTS IN 2011
In collaboration with the Sacramento Municipal Utility
District (SMUD), FPSIE has chosen the Debbie Meyer
Swim School, 4840 Marconi Avenue, Carmichael, CA
95608, for its most ambitious project to date. With
encouragement from and initial funding supplied by
SMUD, there is to be a complete pool equipment
―makeover‖ using current knowledge and the latest
technologies to demonstrate how energy-efficient
equipment can achieve substantial savings while
maintaining superior water clarity and sanitation in a
commercial/semi-commercial venue.
Sacramento, CA/March 22, 2011 – Following
successful collaborations with SMUD to develop a
training course to train pool professionals to conduct
pool-and-spa energy audits and subsequently
developing a ―how-to‖ DVD demonstration video of
those procedures at an actual residential site, FPSIE
and SMUD are now taking the next logical step for their
partnership—to demonstrate that current knowledge
and use of the latest technology can be safely used to
achieve greater energy savings in a commercial/semicommercial venue. Because current prescriptive
regulations preclude some of the energy-efficiency
applications involved in the makeover, FPSIE had to
1 The Foundation
first convince Sacramento County Environmental
Health Department’s Colleen Maitoza to allow the
installation. After she agreed to allow the project on an
experimental basis, FPSIE developed a business plan
that basically provides an opportunity for its industry
sponsors to submit proposals to showcase their
energy-savings products in a high profile venture.
Immediately after announcing the project, Hayward
Pool Products, a major FPSIE sponsor, agreed to
donate all major equipment, pumps, filters, chemical
controllers, and heaters. Subsequently, Geremia Pools,
Sacramento’s most prominent pool builder, agreed to
donate general contracting service for the project; Dal
Pino Quality Pools agreed to donate installation
services; Burkett’s Plastering agreed to donate the flat
concrete work; Folsom Ready Mix agreed to donate
ready-mix concrete; and Robb’s Commercial Pool
Service, Antelope Pool Service, and Gregg’s Pool
Service all agreed to contribute in various ways. Several
other proposals have been received and are being
considered.
FPSIE invites all of its sponsors and potential sponsors
who have product(s) and/or services that can
demonstrate contribution toward this project’s energysaving objectives (and wish to have those
products/services showcased in this high-profile
venture) to submit proposals and/or inquiries to FPSIE,
at [email protected].
Frank Geremia Jr., passed away peacefully at his home
on Sunday evening February 27, 2011, surrounded by
his loving wife and four children after a lengthy battle
with cancer. Frank Geremia was born on January 11,
1937 to Italian immigrant parents, Frank and Anna
Geremia in Sacramento, CA. Frank was preceded in
death by 3 sisters, Francis Giannoni, Helen Pesce, and
Norma Puliz and 3 brothers, Gene, Bob, and Tony
Geremia. Frank graduated from CK McClatchy High
School in 1955 where he was awarded All City,
Lineman of the Year. Frank accepted a full ride
scholarship to play football at the University of Notre
Dame and was chosen to play in the College All Star
Game in Chicago. Frank married his high school
sweetheart, Marsha Austin during his college senior
year. Frank was drafted to the San Francisco 49ers in
1959 then moved back to Sacramento to join his
brothers in the family business, Geremia Pools. Frank
was appointed as the Board Chairman of Contractors
State License Board, by Gov. Deukmejian. He served as
President of SPEC, California's Spa and Pool
Education Council for 12 years. He was past President
of the Master Pools Guild. Frank was an avid golfer with
9-hole in ones. Frank enjoyed skiing, hunting fishing,
wine, and travelling. Frank is survived by his wife of 52
years Marsha and his children, Sharon McHale (Mike),
Lori Poindexter (Whit), Frank Geremia, III and Diane
McLaughlin (Gerald) and 5 grandchildren, Lauren

FEBRUARY 7, 2011 BECOMES A
HISTORIC DAY FOR THE FPSIE
EDUCATION CENTER
February 7, 2011 is the day that work began to place
the first (about 200) donated bricks into the FPSIE
drive-way/entry-way sidewalk area. The bricks being
placed are from past brick donors who so generously
donated to past fundraising programs. Many of the
brick donors are from industry companies and
employees. These current bricks being placed
represent company names, individuals, memorials for
deceased individuals and some from committed
education minded people placing personal remarks.
Thanks to all of you who have donated – for your
support. FPSIE is honored to have your brick NOW
placed in its entry-way.
Hollywood’s famous ―stars‖. We intend for this to be a
place where members, companies and individuals of
the pool and spa industry can be memorialized; where
students and visitors can view the memorials.
FPSIE needs your help to reach the fundraising goal of
donations for 1,000 bricks as part of our financial plan.
It is no secret that the housing bubble burst has caused
a huge strain on the economy. The ripple effect has put
additional strain on our industry sponsor’s educational
budgets to give FPSIE the renewal sponsorships in the
past generous amounts. I feel a renewed brick
donation sale program might allow a different channel
to make smaller donations for those hit hardest by the
current downturn. The ―short term effect" of our
current economy is sure to turn around in the future.
FPSIE is vital to our industry in so many ways and we

Scholarship Opportunities for FPSIE Courses
Manufacturers and utility companies have purchased FPSIE Education Gift Certificates
(see sample below) that pool/spa professionals can use towards tuition for FPSIE
courses. Students needing tuition assistance are encouraged to apply for one of the
certificates by telephoning local manufacturer sales representatives and/or local utility
company representatives to the pool/spa industry. Additionally, trade association
members should check with association management for participation in this Education
Gift Certificate Program. IPSSA, for example, promotes energy-efficiency education and
is offering $100 certificates to the first 100 IPSSA members who register for FPSIE’s
Online Aquatic Energy Auditor Course. If you need point-of-contact information, call
FPSIE at (916) 922-8895. Please have the name of the manufacturer that you support
most and/or the name of your local utility company available when calling.
