They wanted a total brake caster
that was xed (no swivel) so the
casters would always line up perfectly,
so we locked the headrace.
Our customer wanted a neutral, dark
color that would suit the color palette
of the new collection.
We recommended charcoal pedal,
seal and tire, with pearlescent
graphite threadguards with Chicago
screw axles and retro bright chrome.

Used in applications where heat can build up due to
friction of constant movement and/or higher speeds
– all towing applications use precision bearings (as
the high-tolerance and hardened steel used in the
sealed and greased bearings reduces heat buildupthatcancauseweakeningofthewheel).Ball
bearings ofer the lowest-friction and therefore the
lowest push- efort – they are also the most expensive
type of bearing in our range.
Hardness
Theharderthetire,thelessout-of-roundthetirewillbeunderload,
andthesmallertheresultingforcerequiredtostartthewheelfrom
restonsmoothloors.
Resilience (hi-res)
Thegreatertheresilience(bounciness/spring)ofthetire,thelower
thesustainedpushefortrequiredtopassovermultipleobstacles
(roughground).Why?Highresiliencematerialsreturnenergyafter
compressionjustlikearunningshoe(thinksuperballsvs.squashballs
- same hardness, diferent bounciness).
Tire proile
Domedtiresrequirelessforcetoswivelawheel(andaregenerally
used in our light to medium duty caster ranges) - note that most of
ourlighttomediumdutycasterrangesbrakeonthesidesofthe
wheels and rely on our domed proiles. Flat proiles spread load and
preventdamagetoloorsathighloadratings(andareusedinour
heavy and very heavy duty ranges).
Particle embedment
Rubber tires such as grey or hi-res blue rubber may not be suitable
forareasneartoolroomsordirtyloors,asparticlessuchaspebbles
cangetstuckinthetires(whichmaythencausedamagetoloors).
A nylon or polyurethane tire material would be suitable due to its
harder surface which resists particle embedment.

Choose the size of wheel diameter
Thelargerthewheel,theeasiertopushandthebettertheride
comfort (ability to pass over bumps and to minimize vibration).
Why?Thelargerthewheel,thesmallerobstaclesareasa
proportion of the diameter, resulting in greater momentum.
Wheeldiametershouldbemaximized,bearinginmindthat:
• as a rule of safety a maximum height of 1400mm (4’7”) is
recommended (including the goods being carried) to enable
a clear line of sight
• small wheels are sometimes used to reduce the center of
gravity to address tip hazards due to top-heavy loads

¹Brake Effectiveness
The ISO brake effectiveness tests are
extremely harsh. They exist to ensure that
brakes are ramp-capable by measuring
brake traction force. However this greatly
reduces the load capacity of the caster that
is otherwise appropriate in safely complying
with the ISO Static, Dynamic and Impact tests.

At Fallshaw, our approach is to rate the caster
for normal use on lat surfaces. However if
your application involves brake application
on ramps or inclines then you MUST reduce
the catalog load rating by 0-40% in order to
comply with the ISO brake effectiveness test
(except in hospital bed casters which are fully
compliant at published ratings).
* The ISO standard for dynamic testing speciies 3 mins ON/1 min OFF or 2 min OFF or 3 min OFF. However,
we test 3 mins ON 3 min OFF in applications where excessive heat build up would not be experienced in
the ield and is not a failure mode. Change direction each cycle. Obstacles at 45° alternating left/ right.

Conditions of use
Casters will not roll easily unless they are big enough for the load & loor
conditions.
Properlychosen,ittedandmaintainedproductswillgivemanyyearsoftroublefreeperformance.Theinformationin
thiscatalogmakesthispossible.Ifyoudonotcorrectlychoose,itandmaintaintheseproductsyoumayreleasethe
manufacturer from liability to you. Please consider the supplied information carefully.
Casters75mm(3”)shouldonlybeusedonlightweight,seldomusedequipment.Evendiametersof100mm(4”)areonlyusefulon
smoothloors.Anycartwheeledquickly,oronunevenloors,needswheels125mm(5”)orlarger.Theheaviertheload,thelargerthe
wheel.
1) General use
Thecastersandwheelssuppliedbyusaregenerallyinterchangeable,andareattachedtocart,furniture,industrial
containersandsimilarproductstomakethemmobile.Unlessspeciiedotherwiseinourcatalog,ourproductsmustnotbe
usedataspeedexceedingwalkingpace,andnotundercontinuousmotion.
Mostpeoplecanexert17kgofpushtogetacartrolling,andabout12kg(26.4lb)tokeepitmoving.Thisreducesto6kg(13.2lb)over
longdistances.Thisisthereasonthatballbearingsandrollerbearingsaremorepopularthanplain,astheyallowmoreloadforthe
same push efort.
2) Fitting
Casterswillnotswivelproperlyunlesstheyaremountedvertically.Otherwisetheywilltracktooneside.
Whenselectingacasterorwheelitisnecessarytoconsiderallaspectsasshowninthecatalog.
Some recommendations
Forsatisfactoryuse,correctittingisessential,ie:
Heavycartsneedplatemountings,butthebaseofthecartmustbestrongenoughtowithstandtheload.Nevermountaplate
casterbythreeboltsonly.Neverskimponthemountingbase.
•correctandsecureittingtothearticle;
Remember - if the caster does not stay mounted squarely, it will not swivel freely.
•thefunctionofthecastermustnotbechangednorafectedbytheixing;
Mediumdutycastersareoftenmountedintotubularlegs.Butagain,itisimportantthattheselegsstayvertical.
Werecommendthatthelegneverextendmorethan125mm(5”)belowthenearestsupport,and(apartfromthelightestuses),the
tubeshouldbe1.4mm(17G)thickormore.Thinnerguagesoftensplit.Ifyouwishtouselightedgaugeintherestofthecart,inserta
sleeve for at least 150, (6”) where the caster is mounted.

Never put a round expanding itting into a square tube.
•ifixedcastersareusedwithswivelcasters,theymustbecompatible,andasrecommendedbyus.
Whenittingexpandingstemcasters,makesurethattheittingisfullyinsertedintothetube,withthetubeirmlydownontothecaster
head rivet, before tightening it up (you may have to remove some of the burr on the inside of the tube before you try to push the
ittingin).Aftermakingsuretheweldontheinsideofthetubeisnotexcessive,alignitwithoneoftheslotsdowntheoutsidefothe
adaptoritting.PuttheittingintothetubeALLTHEWAY,thenputsomesidewayspressureontoittohelptheittingsgrip,thentighten
thestemboltirmly.Tighten,butNOTovertight,oryouwillmakeithardtoremovelater.
Never try to get the unevenness out of a warped cart by half inserting ittings.
•ixedcastersmusthavetheirwheelaxlesinalignment;
•ifallswivelcastersareused,thentheymustbesimilarinmountingheightsandofsets;
3) Outdoor use & corrosive environments
Whencastersareusedoutdoors,incoastalareas,orincorrosiveand/oraggressiveareas,specialproductshavetobe
speciied and warranty periods will vary.
Pages 24-25 include casters designed for corrosive environments. A chemical resistance table shown on page 20
describes the performance of various materials when exposed to corrosive conditions. A 3 (three) year warranty period
appliesforapplicationsorenvironmentswhereallcastermaterialsareratedas‘good’.A1(one)yearwarrantyperiod
appliesforapplicationsorenvironmentswhereallcastermaterialsareratedas‘fair’or‘good’.Nowarrantyappliesfor
applicationsorenvironmentsinwhichacastermaterialisratedas‘poor’.Incorrosiveapplicationsorenvironmentsnot
describedinthetable,pleaseseekadvicefromourtechnicalstaf.
You can get up to 8mm (5/16”) of adjustment with washers, or an ofcut of tube tightly jammed between leg and caster - but do not
letitloat.Tightentubularittingsirmly,butdonotover-tighten.
4) High/low temperature
Youshouldretightencastersafter3monthsofuse,andannuallyafterthat.Werecommend‘3inger’tightness,ietheamountof
torqueyoucangetontoastandardspannerusingyour3middleingers.(Askforourseparatedetailed‘FittingInstruction’sheet.)
Foruseintemperaturesbelow5°C(41°F)andabove60°C(140°F)theeiciencyofthecastercanbeimpaired,
particularly the normal load capacity as published can be afected when used in temperatures below/above those
stated herein. Special products can be speciied.
Underaverageconditionsofintermittentuse,FALLSHAWcasterswillrunfor5yearswithoutmaintenance.
Ifthecastersareinconstantuse,thisreducesto1year.
Greasing: Greaseinboththeswivelandthewheelservesthreepurposes;
a)itpreventsrustingoftheballsandraceways;b)preventsgalling;c)itreducesnoise.
Itdoesnotneedalotofgreasetodothis.Toomuchisunsightlyandonlyattractsdust.Aliberalsmearisallthatisneeded.Ifyouonly
have a few casters to grease, use your inger to apply the grease, then wipe of the excess with a rag or use a needle tip grease gun.
Ifyouhavemanyofthemwesuggestthefollowing:
•Turnthecartupsidedownandremovethewheels.
•Re-greasethehead,eitherthroughthegreasenippleifitted,orbyaneedletipittingonagreasegun.Youwillneed
toliftthesealontheheavierrangeofcasterswithasharppointedscrewdriver.Twofullsquirtsareusuallyadequate,butmakesure
enough grease gets through to the center so it can descend to the bottom race.
•Checkthewearoftheaxlebushing.Reuseifnotheavilyworn,otherwisereplace.Smearaboutateaspoonofgrease
alongtheinsideofthewheelbearingwithyouringer,takingcaretoforcethegreaseupintotherollersandreassemble.
•Becarefulofthelipsealonthewheelasyoureinserttheaxlebushingintotherollerbearingwheels.Makesuretheaxlebushingis
clean as you reinsert it.
•Reassemblethewheelintothecaster.Replacewasherwhereitted.AdropofLocktiteHighAssemblyStrengthsolutionontheaxle
thread is a good precaution.
•UseaNo.2bearinggrease(notsodiumbased).
Swivels: Allcastershavetheracesstakedduringassemblysothereforedonotrequreanyadjustmentthroughouttheiroperatinglife.
Wheel Bearings:Anyslacknesspresentinplainbearingsorrollerbearingscanoftenbeimprovedbyreplacingtheaxlebushing.If
necessary,theplainorrollerbearingscanbereplacedaswell.Oftensimplyre-greasingBtypebearingsisenough,thoughtheycan
alsobereplacedifnecessary.SealedprecisionQtypebearingsseldomwearsuicientlyenoughtoneedattention.
Wheels:Polyurethanewheelsusuallyoutlastanycarttowhichtheyareitted,suchisthewearresistanceofpolyurethane.Ingeneral,
allourwheelsaredesignedwithadequatetreadthicknessforlonglifeandallowforreplacementratherthanrepair.
Tube Fittings:Itisadvisablethatanytubeittingonexpandingstemcastersbecheckedaftertheirst3months,andthenyearlyto
makesurethetubeittingisfullyandirmlyintothetubeandthetighteningnutisirmlybutnotovertightened.
5) Pneumatic wheels
DoNOTinlateoverrecommendedtireinlationpressure(30psi).
Theloadandcoldinlationpressuresimposedonthecombinationoftireandwheelmustnotexceedthe
recommendations,eventhoughthetireisapprovedforahigherloadorinlationpressure.
Itisnormalforairilledwheelstolosetirepressureovertimeeveniftheyarenotbeingusedandit’simportantforyour
safetythatyouensurethatthewheelsarepumpeduptotheirrecommendedPSIbeforeuse–alternativelyyoucanuse
oursemi-pneumaticpunctureproofwheelsinapplicationsthatrequirewheelsnevergolat.

Theirsttimeacarthitsabump,thetubewillelongate,andthecasterwillfallout.Wedohavesquareittings,andaskthatyouuse
them.Ifforsomereasonyouneedtoputroundintosquare,thenweldaninsertsleeveofroundtube(remember-oursmallestitting
needs3/4”ID).WhenusingDirectionalLock(DLtypeCasters)itisbesttousethesolidswivelstem(Atype)andweldorboltitin-
screwedtypescanbecomemisaligned.Toachievethebestperformancefromthelarger175(7”)and200mm(8”)casters,usesolid
stems.

6) Components

componentpartsmakingthecompleteproduct.
You must allow for all possible loads when selecting products, otherwise use increased safety factors.
7) Misuse
Misuse occurs if wheels and casters are used other than speciied for their intended use. Do not misuse the casters or
wheels.Theword‘misuse’canbedeinedas:overloading,unsuitablelooring,excessivetemperatures,failuretorelease
brake,exposuretocausticsubstances,excessiveshockloading,ingressionofforeignobjectsintowheeltreads,excessive
speeds, changes made to the component parts and assembled casters not previously agreed in writing with the original
manufacturer.
