One holiday, many colours.
Welcome to the Riviera delle Palme
One holiday, many colours.
From Varazze to Andora: all the emotions of a magic holiday.
2
The Riviera delle Palme.
Are you looking for a colourful holiday, rich in
emotions and not far from your home? No need for
long journeys: driving on the motorway, from either
Milan or Turin, in just two-hour you reach 1500
square kilometres of coasts, valleys and mountains
where both the dull winter fogs and the colourless
sultry summer are indeed something unknown.
Here, in summer as well as in winter, you can only
experience the changing blue of the sea and the
deep green of olive trees and pines. A dip into the
light blue water, a walk on the sand and then just
beyond the beach the old village with its narrows
alleys, the typical “caruggi”, unmistakable for their
extreme narrowness and for their fragrance and
scent: baked bread, fresh fish fried in the pan with
a little bit of olive oil, thyme, oregano and basil,
uniquely aromatized by the sea scent.
Why travel further then? It is perhaps here, in the
Riviera delle Palme, that you can find the ideal set
for your holiday.
The sea blue
with its many shades
is melting into the changing green
of the flowering lawns
and with the light blue of the sky.

The Climate and the Holiday
Springtime for ever.
A privileged climate, all the year round.
Winter? A non-existing word: there is no winter in
the Riviera delle Palme. Fog and frost are unknown:
the sea mitigates temperature all the year round,
thus avoiding summer sultriness and winter iciness.
The north winds and the sea breezes preserve the
atmosphere from pollution in all seasons.
The vegetation illuminates winter days: blooming
yellow mimosas in January, blossoming white
almond trees and cherry trees in February. In
springtime the air is scented by the wild broom,
beloved by poets, whereas the palm trees are
swaying in the sea breeze.
In autumn the woods on the hills darken red and
brown, the skylight softens and the seawater
warmness invites to a dip, to enjoy further the
embrace of a never ending summer.
In the Riviera delle Palme the sun is shining for
twelve months, in an eternal springtime offering a
holiday site for all seasons.

the sea.
A Riviera unrolling for more than one hundred
kilometers, with the sea striving its best to satisfy
its lovers coming from all over Europe.
Those who enjoy lying lazily under the sunshades
are offered long beaches of soft and fine sand;
bending sea-front promenades, shaded by the palms
trees, are ready to welcome those who prefer
watching the sea walking in its fresh breeze; the
pure breath of nature can be enjoyed by the high
cliffs smashed by the winter waves, and romantic
moments on the seaside are offered in lonely and
pebbly inlets. In the tourist harbors the sweet rolling
of the white yachts is lulling all sea-dogs in search
of salted and sunny horizons. The sight off the coast
is not to be missed: a wonderful sight of sperm
whales, dolphins and rorqual whales. Whalewatching on board of equipped boats is available
in that area of the Ligurian Sea recently set up as
Cetaceans Sanctuary.
The sea is a caring friend and the Riviera delle Palme
loves its sea: for this reason each year many of its
resorts are awarded the coveted “blue flag”,
officially assigned by the European Community to
those resorts where quality of the natural
environment, beaches and harbors is carefully
sought after and where great attention is paid to
the compliance with facilities and services quality
standards required by guests.

Who could forget the beaches of the Riviera delle
Palme after having experienced them?
How could one forget the long kilometers of very
fine golden sand, that “cocktail” of tiny candid
quartz and soft limestone granules?
A soft carpet to be treaded silently in the lonely
and clear daylight of the winter sun, warmed up by
the summer heat, an invitation to lie down under
multi-colored rows of sunshades and deck-chairs.
And then the bathing establishments, with their
colored wooden cabins, offering entertainment,
relax and opportunity for old friendship to be
renewed and new relations to be established.
In the luminous air, echoing the bathers voices, the
beaches are sloping down into the sea. The water
is not very deep, it is quiet, light blue and warm,
also in autumn; its golden color shining into the
sunlight is fading into light blue, green and then
into the dark of the innermost depths. Walking
slowly into the water the skin warmed up by the
sun is restored by the sweet embrace of the sea.

To leave behind the crazy crowd of the cheerful and
colored beaches is very easy; the Riviera delle Palme
can also satisfy lovers of a direct contact with the
wildest side of the sea. From one beach to another
there is a succession of small rocky promontories
covered by cluster pines and holm oaks, whereas
the cliffs rising from the waves hide small caves
slowly penetrated by the sea and irradiated by the
light that creates on the limestone the iridescences
of a rainbow; and there, where the cliffs appear to
be inaccessible, lonely inlets unveil. They can be
reached only on boat or on foot and where, even in
summer romantic, intimacy can be absolute; not
very far from the coast the two islets of Bergeggi
and Gallinara, two protected natural areas, reign
of the seagulls, can be easily reached. At dawn
these two unspoilt oasis are offering a joyful sight
of dark blues rising from the sea water, whereas at
sunset the two lonely islets experience all the
nuances of yellow and red.

A journey into the wonders of handicraft; from Albisola
Handicraft in the Riviera delle Palme stems from
centuries of tradition and skill of glass-workers and
potters who are now exporting their works all over
the world.
All objects produced by the artisan glassworks in
Altare and by the potters ovens in the two districts
of Albisola are precious works of art, souvenirs of
an outstanding holiday, present to be offered to
beloved people. In Altare there are a number of
artisan workshop dedicated to crystal- and glass
blowing, decorating and engraving, all preserving
this peculiar form of artistic expression; here the
Glass Museum shows the history and technique of
this noble and ancient art.
In the two districts of Albisola the secrets of the
master “potters” can be learned either by visiting
one of the thirty works, very often family-run, in
which renowned artists realize their works or by
choosing one of the three pottery museums. The
Artists Promenade is a gift made by the most
important and famous potters of the XXth century
to the town of Albissola Marina and to its guests.

Typical Products
A “flourishing” agriculture.
In the plains and on the terraced walls genuine and tasty products are
14
grown. And many flowers as well.
The hard work done by peasants over the past
centuries has contributed to a great heritage made
of kilometers of terraced walls and modern
greenhouse systems enabling the rational utilization
of the fertile coastal plains. The genuineness of
agricultural products in the Riviera delle Palme
equals their freshness and excellence: flowers,
either in pot or cut, exported to all European
countries, Albenga’s artichokes, early produces
and basil, the main ingredient of the local sauce
“pesto”. Woodland offers chestnuts, mushrooms
and, in the Bormida Valley, also delicious truffles;
bees produce excellent honey. Last, but not least,
wine and oil: white wines such as the Pigato or the
Vermentino; red wines such as the Rossese under
the certified area of production (DOC) “Riviera
Ligure di Ponente” and the typical geographical
designation (IGT) “Colline Savonesi”, whereas the
extra virgin olive oil, registered under the origin
designation (DOP) "Riviera del Ponente Savonese"
is the ideal “raw” dressing to enrich all the
Mediterranean recipes with taste and nourishing
factors too. The “Wine and Oil Road ” goes across
the whole territory of the Riviera delle Palme and
is reaching almost all sites where these two gifts
are produced and sold.

15
Gastronomy
Welcome to our table.
All the flavours and scents of the Mediterranean food are here
16
for tasting and represent a joy to the eyes.
Fish and agricultural produce are jointly contributing
to the creation of the tasty dishes of the Riviera
delle Palme.
The many cliffs are hosting sea rock fish, the
superlative ingredient of marine cooking sold by
fishermen early in the morning, just after their night
at sea. The simple sea rock fish, enriched by its
intense marine scent, is a good match to the much
sought-after shellfish, crustaceans, sword-fish and
tuna-fish.
Mixed fry, “buridde” (traditional Ligurian fish stews),
fish soups, grilled fish slices dressed with oil
and herbs, accompanied by vegetables or fresh
mushrooms and by a glass of excellent wine.
Here the food reminds of the peasant origin of the
inhabitants: vegetables pies, Eastern pie with eggs,
beets or artichokes; the sweet and salted pumpkin
pie, cheese made of milk produced by cows and
goats grazing on nearby lawns and woods.
Let’s not forget the “focaccia”, a flat loaf made of
flour, yeast, salt and olive oil, Ligurian gluttony at
its best, nor shall we omit the “ farinata” and the
“panissa”, both pies made of chick-peas flour,
simple and tasty.
Fresh pasta, white corn-meal mush, beets- filled
ravioli and courses based on rabbit: they all preserve
the country flavours.
Lovers of sweets shall orientate themselves among
“pandolce” (a variety of cake), candied bitter
oranges, “torcetti” (a variety of biscuits), chestnut
cakes and the famous Sassello macaroons, exported
all over the world and particularly appreciated in
the Usa, to which they are sent weekly.
The long cliffs

Sports for all tastes.

a thousand opportunities.
The Riviera delle Palme offers a range of opportunities for active holidays: the sea invites to a swim
or to set sailing. On some beaches currents and
winds produce waves attracting surf lovers from all
European countries.
Sea rocks are ready to welcome divers with a
luxuriant marine life to be admired and immortalize
in pictures. In the hinterland a variety of tracks is
made available to those who prefer the country
environment: walkers, bikers and horse-riders.
And for an extensive relax what could be better
than a golf match on the Garlenda course, not far
from the coast?
The Riviera delle Palme can also satisfy lovers of
strong emotions in many ways: by descending into
its Karstic cavities, into the mountains, in search
of minerals and animals; by climbing onto the coast
cliffs and their limestone walls, a reminder of the
varied geological history of this land; by paragliding
from the top of its hills, dancing in the air and then
landing on the sea shore.

furrows create a sort of moonscape and
just after few curves uphill a different, yet
enchanting, landscape appears. It is the hinterland
made of green valleys, cultivated land, pastures
and wooded mountains.
A “Mountain Riviera” at a short distance from the
sea, easy to reach, covered by snow in winter and
freshly breezed in summer. Ridges and valleys are
crossed by a dense network of organized excursions
tracks, ideal to those who like walking, biking and
horse riding: the High Track, “the motorway” of the
Ligurian Mountains; the Highlands track; the trail
named Bormida Nature, the ancient “Salt Trails ”,
connecting for centuries the plains to the sea, and
the other way round too, enabling the transfer of
men, goods and ideas.
From the highest peaks the sight reaches out freely,
from Corsica to Mount Rosa, from the Côte d’Azur
to the Apuan Alps.

Naturalistic Parks
Pure emotions.
Nature and the enchantment of an uncontaminated land.
22
More than half of the Riviera delle Palme area is
covered by woodland and forests: a natural heritage
of inestimable value which is preserved by the
institution of parks and natural reserves. One of
these, the Beigua Regional Natural Park, covers a
wide territory in Savona hinterland area.
Mount Beigua, 1.287 m. high and a sacred mountain
for prehistoric Ligurian people, lies at a very short
distance from the coast and offers its silent and
majestic views from its striated rocks, originated
by the depths of an ancient ocean.
Trouts are darting in streams and does, foxes and
wild boars hide in the forest. Here one can still find
cows which are being bred according to ancient
methods and some old stone-walled farmhouses
are now supplying “farm holiday accommodation”.
Varazze Desert Hermitage is worth visiting, as an
opportunity of “mystic” contact with nature and
spirituality.
The whole Beigua Massif is a wild area of
extraordinary beauty and represents the ideal site
for enchanting excursions along its trails,
disseminated with equipped areas for resting and
enjoying nature’s embrace.

prehistory.
The Riviera delle Palme has been
inhabited by men for thousands of
years and it is echoing their many
voices from the past: the mysterious voice of
prehistoric caves dwellers as well as the obscure
voice of the pre-roman Ligures, builders of the
fortified castle-villages on the hilltops. It is indeed
the trace of the Roman conquerors that can still be
admired today by the Julia Augusta Road, the
bridges in Ponci and Quazzola Valleys and the
regular urban structure of the town of Albenga.Other
reminders of the Medieval Age are the walls erected
around the villages of Noli, Finalborgo and
Zuccarello, and the inexpugnable castles of
Castelvecchio, Rocca Barbera and Bormida Valley.
One of the most beautiful monument in Liguria,
going back to the XVIth century, is Savona Priamàr,
transformed in a fortress by the Republic of Genoa
in the XVIIIth century.
History is further voiced by a thousand Romanesque
and baroque churches, by the sound of the bells of
the two towers in Laigueglia, -beloved resting site
for Thor Heyerdal, naturalist, archeologist and
explorer- and by the small churches with the original
museums, in the hinterland villages.
One should keep looking up and around, for fear
of missing anything artistic and historic offered by
this land: one can find anywhere artistic and
architectural treasures, even hidden into a small
medieval church, sheer above the sea. As an
alternative one can choose to be enchanted by the
Cultural Parks, cultural and historic “thematic”
itineraries presenting the visitor with the thousand
secrets of the Riviera.
25
Historical Districts
A visit is worth the holiday.
Villages and historical district in the Riviera delle Palme: rare
Long and narrow alleys between lines of tall houses
with colored façades, swarming with people and
voices springing from the small shops and from the
open windows. Nearby the wide and elegant seafront promenades, shaded by palm trees.
These are the Riviera villages, once inhabited by
fishermen only. On the hills houses lie side by side,
as they used to at the time of pirates raids and
feudal wars.
They are all gathered around the church and a
network of stone-paved alleys connects door to
door.
High on the top of a mountain, assembled around
a bridge in a stream or lying by the beach, ancient
villages and historic districts of the hinterland are
multi-colored gems, red and yellow, surrounded by
the ruins of the medieval walls or by the green
nuances of woodland.
Magic sites, to be walked through, leaving behind
the noises of civilization, to seize their timeless
atmosphere and to visit the thirty-nine museums
where the huge heritage of culture, art, hard working
existence of our predecessors is carefully preserved.

Festivals, Events and Traditions
Events for a thousand
A calendar rich of events to enjoy all the opportunities offered
The local culture is alive in the traditional festivals
and events which animate villages and towns. There
are both religious and lay traditions, stemming from
long long ago and perpetuated by young and old
people ready to welcome guest tourists in the public
squares. On the coast and in the valleys, in town
and villages, each month of the year is an opportunity
to evoke the past: the history of medieval castles
and their dwellers marquees and damsels; the
revolutionary and inflamed times of Napoleonic
battles; the peasant propitiatory rites of pagan
origin; the Christian calendar festivals, with huge
bonfires and parades, when the precious wooden
cases of the Confraternities, full of silver objects
and tradition, are brought through the streets.
There are also horse-races and sailing-races, an
opportunity for supporting the different districts of
each villages fighting for victory; the carnival is
celebrated with masks and parades; the towns
streets are covered with flowers, the old Fiat 500
car models celebrate their yearly rally; the
champions of “pallone elastico” (a kind of hand
ball game)play their matches.
Charming open air theatres are available for summer
recitals and in the squares of the stone-walled
villages overlooking the sea literary prizes are
awarded to the most gifted book writers; beauty
contests are organized and local festivals offer
banquets which take place near oil mills (“gumbi”),
ancient oak-trees and under the vineyards pergolas.

holiday.
“The night is short for us ”, two beautiful German
showgirls, the Kessler twin sisters, used to sing
these lines some years ago. In the Riviera delle
Palme the night can be short for everyone, it is
enough to abandon oneself, to get dazzled by the
flames rising up toward the stars from the sea-side
summer bonfires, or to be caught by the frenzied
rhythm of discos: traditional dance, the ’60s, LatinAmerican rhythms, disco-music, techno, house
music and rock’n’roll.
Yet the night is not the only part of the day dedicated
to entertainment: also under the sun the
opportunities of recreation are many, even more
amusing if approached with a bit of craziness, taking
part, either as spectators or as protagonists, to the
many events, beauty contests and matches
organized on the beaches and in the historical
districts; or even visiting the aqua parks where also
adults can plunge back into childhood.
The Riviera delle Palme celebrates all ages and all
seasons.

Accommodation Facilities
Always open for holidays.
Hotel, Residences, Camp Sites, Farm Holiday Accomodation, Bed & Breakfast,
With more than 1000 accommodation facilities of
any kind and category, there is a wide choice for
accommodation in the Riviera delle Palme: dream
holiday in hotels or residences, a romantic stop in
a family-run hotel, where one can start a friendship
with the owners and then meet again year after
year, holiday after holiday. One can chose a bed &
breakfast or one of the well-equipped camp-sites,
for a young-hearted holiday.
Or decide to spend the night in a farm surrounded
by a green landscape, which offers tasty and genuine
food, in order to alternate the liveliness of the sea
with the relaxing breeze of the country.
The many tourist harbors along the coast enable
lovers of sailing and open sea to drop the anchor
anywhere in the Riviera.
Many modern congress sites are also available at
any time of the year for meeting and gatherings,
an opportunity for participants and their guests to
match a business meeting with the delight of a
holiday by an unforgettable stay.
