Shutter Speed  Exposure Time
Concept: Amount of time shutter stays open
Smaller number is faster (1/200  1”) fractions of a second
Longer exposure allows for more light/time

Aperture  F-Stop
Concept: Size shutter is open
Lower f-stop is bigger opening (wider aperture) allowing more light
− Produces shallow depth of field with blurry fore/back-ground
Higher f-stop is smaller opening (narrower aperture) reducing amount of light
− Better for focusing across all planes – better for landscape

ISO
Concept: Sensitivity to light
Lower number has higher quality representation of light
Higher ISO will cause noisy/grainy features, but good for picking up more detail
in dark

Shooting Scenarios with Settings
Tripod Landscape
/ Night Time
Slower shutter speed (no need to worry about shake), lower ISO (less
grainy), higher f-stop (more detail)
Moving subjects
Faster shutter speed (1/800), multi-shot, ISO based on lighting,
lower f-stop (wider aperture for more light)
Posed subjects /
portrait
ISO based on lighting, lower f-stop, shutter speed can be slower if
you can hold the camera steady, Focus on eyes, center-weight meter
Shallow depth of
field
Low f-stop, setup shots with more objects in farther
foreground/background to see contrast
Indoor candle-lit
Higher ISO with no flash. If flash necessary, bounce it and use
Aperture priority settings
Indoor
fluorescent lights
ISO 1600-ish, Low f-stop
Outdoor sunny
ISO 160-ish, f-stop flexible, shutter speed flexible
Outdoor overcast
ISO 400-ish, f-stop flexible, shutter speed flexible
