STORYLINES
1. UP AHEAD: With finals complete, the Miami University women’s basketball team
hits the road for Martin, Tennessee to take on UT Martin on Tuesday. Game time is
scheduled for 7 p.m. (EST) and an audio broadcast will air on Miami College Sports
Live.
2. THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK: Miami has won its last three contests before
the finals break. During the winning streak, the RedHawks are hitting 44.4 percent of
their shots, while their strong defense is holding opponents to 36.6 percent shooting.
One of the biggest reasons for the success lately has been an increase in sharing the
ball and a decrease in turnovers. In its last three games, Miami has a 0.84 assist-toturnover ratio.
3. MIAMI IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE: Despite being only a couple of states over,
this is a rare trip into the state of Tennessee for the RedHawks. It is the first time Miami
will play a game in the Volunteer State since Dec. 10, 2005 when it had a road game at
Vanderbilt. It is only the eighth game all-time that the Red and White have played in
the state of Tennessee. They have a 2-5 record in their first seven games there.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY, PLEASE
When referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not
use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution.
Also, in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. It is one word with a capital H.

LAST GAME: A strong shooting performance from the floor and balanced scoring
throughout the lineup propelled the Miami University women’s basketball team to a
65-54 victory over Oakland at Millett Hall on Saturday afternoon. Miami improves to
5-2 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 4-3.
Five RedHawks scored nine or more points as they shot an even 50 percent from the
floor in their third-straight victory.
The Golden Grizzlies hit their first two shots on a Sinclair Russell jumper and an Olivia
Nash three-pointer, but sophomore guard Baleigh Reid drained a corner three-pointer and freshman point guard Leah Purvis split a pair of free throws to leave the score
5-4, 2:03 in. Scoring slowed down from there as the teams went over three minutes
without a point until Kristen Levering hit a layup to give Miami a 6-5 lead.
After Reid made a runner in the lane to put MU on top 8-5, OU countered with six
straight points in the paint to nab an 11-8 lead with 2:40 to play in the first quarter. A
Miami timeout settled things down and the RedHawks pulled within a point (13-12)
after the first quarter.
Levering evened the score at 13 after splitting a pair of free throws a minute into the
second quarter. Down 14-13, Purvis weaved through the defense as a one-player fast
break and finished with the layup to put MU on top 15-14, spurring on a 6-0 run that
saw sophomore guard Ana Richter make a pair of layups. The run eventually ballooned to 10-1 on a senior forward Jessica Rupright put back and a freshman guard
Kendall McCoy baseline jumper to go up 23-15 with four minutes to go in the first
half.
Five-straight Oakland points cut the Miami lead to three, but the RedHawks finished
the half on a 10-2 run with Purvis netting six of those points to hand them a 33-22
lead at the break.
Sophomore forward Molly McDonagh and Levering each scored early in the third to
up the lead to 15 at 37-22 just 1:14 into the second half. The Golden Grizzlies used a
three and a couple free throws to pull back within 10, but the RedHawks countered
with another McDonagh layup and a Reid jumper to grab a 41-27 lead at the four
minute mark of the frame.
Oakland shot themselves back into the game with a 9-0 run over the next 2:26, pulling the gap to 41-36. A couple split trips at the charity stripe along with a layup by
Levering bumped the lead by to 45-36, but Taylor Gleason drained a baseline jumper
on the following possession to keep OU’s deficit at seven. Another OU bucket cut
the deficit to five, but Richter found herself open for a three at the wing, which she
converted to give Miami a 48-40 lead after three quarters.
A Reid three-pointer moved the Red and White’s lead to 51-40 with just over eight
minutes to play. After an Oakland bucket, Miami struck for six straight with Reid making a layup and McDonagh converting two bunnies of her own to extend the lead to
57-42 with 5:07 to go and the Golden Grizzlies did not get the score back any closer

than nine points the rest of the way.
In addition to making half of their field goals, the RedHawks held the Golden Grizzlies to 34.5 percent shooting. The outside shot wasn’t falling for either side as OU hit
4-of-17 (22.2 percent) of its three-pointers while MU went 3-of-18 (17.6 percent) from
beyond the arc. Miami enjoyed a dominant 44-29 advantage in rebounding. MU also
put up 20 assists on its 28 baskets.
Reid led Miami with 14 points while Levering posted her first career double-double
with 13-points and 11 rebounds. McDonagh added 11 points and eight boards of her
own. Purvis and Richter both scored nine points with Purvis also dishing out a gamehigh five assists.
ABOUT UT MARTIN: The Skyhawks are 5-4 on the season. Despite a difficult schedule, they have won three games in a row. In their last game, they went on the road
and defeated Evansville, 75-48, on Saturday. UT Martin only returns four players from
last season’s OVC Championship team, but has reloaded with several talented freshmen and transfers. It is led by freshman forward DaiJia Ruffin. She is averaging 16.2
points per game. Also averaging in double figures are senior forward Haley Howard
(13.3 points per game) and junior guard Jessy Ward (13.0 points per game). The Skyhawks are a prolific three-point shooting team, averaging 10.3 treys per contest.
SERIES WITH UT MARTIN: The Skyhawks won the only meeting between the two
schools, 90-57, last season on Dec. 15, 2014 in Oxford. However, the four players returning this season for UT Martin only scored 12 of those points in that game. Baleigh
Reid led Miami with 16 points, while Jessica Rupright finished with 15.
MIAMI VS. OVC: The Ohio Valley Conference is made up of 12 mid-size schools
located in the states of Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Alabama. Miami has
a 13-19 record all-time against schools in the current makeup of the OVC. UT Martin
is the fourth different OVC school the RedHawks have faced this season.. So far Miami
has defeated Austin Peay and Morehead State, and lost to EKU in overtime. . In addition to their 0-1 record against the Skyhawks, the RedHawks are 1-1 vs. Belmont, 1-4
vs. Eastern Illinois, 2-0 vs. Austin Peay, 4-9 vs. Eastern Kentucky, 1-2 vs. Murray State,
0-1 vs. Tennessee Tech and 3-1 vs. Morehead State. Miami has never faced Jacksonville
State, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville or Tennessee State.
UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: The RedHawks remain on the road as they travel to
Michigan Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. tip. The game will air live on WMOH as well as on
Miami College Sports Live.
THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK: Miami has won its last three contests before the
finals break.
PLUS-MINUS RATING: As statistics gathering has gotten more advanced over the
years, one of the new ways of analyzing a player’s performance is their plus-minus
rating. The plus-minus rating measures how many points are scored while they are on
the court, as well as how many are given up. It is not a perfect way of analyzing performance, as it does not take into account any opponent factors (i.e., were the starters
or the bench in for the opposition; it might be easier for a player to score when the
other team’s best player is sitting on the bench). It does give a very general look as to
how effective a team is in both scoring and defense when that particular player is on
the floor, as well as which lineup combinations are best at scoring and which hold the
opposition down.
So far this season Miami has been most successful when Kristen Levering has been
on the court. During the 128:18 that she has played, the RedHawks have scored 283
points, while they have given up 226. That gives her a plus-minus rating of +57. The
lineup combination that has been the most effective for the longest period of time
has been the lineup that features Levering, Ana Richter, Leah Purvis, Baleigh Reid
4
2 0 15 - 16
and Molly McDonagh. That combination has been on the floor for a period of 64:44.
During that time they have scored 121 points, while giving up 94. That gives that
lineup combination a plus-minus rating of +27.
OFFENSE PUTTING UP THE POINTS: Through the first seven games of the season,
the RedHawks are averaging an impressive 70.6 points per contest and have scored
over 70 in four of them. That show the improvement that experience can bring as
Miami’s freshmen-run team hit the 70-point mark only three times all of last season.
Showing improvement in nearly every offensive category, the RedHawks are hitting
45.1 percent of their shots, which is the best in the MAC and currently ranks 37th in
the country as of Dec. 8.
REBOUNDING AN ADVANTAGE: Through seven games, the RedHawks are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 10.7 caroms per contest. That ranks
25th in all of Division I as of Dec. 8. The rebounding advantage has been a key factor
in each of Miami’s wins this season. Against Evansville, the RedHawks held a 57-27
advantage on the boards. MU followed that up by outrebounding Austin Peay, 47-31,
in the win on Nov. 19. Against Morehead State on Nov. 29, the Red and White won the
board battle, 43-39, and at Valparaiso, Miami held a 38-32 rebounding advantage. In
their last game, the ‘Hawks outrebound Oakland, 44-29. It was the third time this season they have had a double-digit rebounding advantage. Freshman forward Kristen
Levering leads Miami with an average of 6.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard/
forward Ana Richter is right behind her at 6.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore
forward Molly McDonagh average 6.0 per contest.
REID PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hot off making the All-MAC Freshman team
last season, sophomore guard Baleigh Reid continued to show that she’ll be among
Miami’s leading scorers in 2015-16. Against NKU in the season opener (Nov. 13), she
scored 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting. She followed that with a career-high 29 points
and eight rebounds in the ‘Hawks double-overtime win over Evansville (Nov. 16). She
then scored 20 points in the victory over Austin Peay (Nov. 19),16 points against EKU
(Nov. 24) and 18 points in the win over Valparaiso (Dec. 2). Reid is now leading Miami
with an average 17.1 points per game.
PURVIS STARTS STRONG: Freshman point guard Leah Purvis has had a significant
impact on each of Miami’s first seven games. In the RedHawks contest against EKU
(Nov. 24), she led the team with 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Purvis scored 15
points in her career debut against Northern Kentucky (Nov. 13), hitting 4-for-8 from
behind the arc. She followed that up with 17 more points in the double overtime
win over Evansville (Nov. 16), 19 points in the victory over Austin Peay (Nov. 19) and
nine points and five assists in the RedHawks’ win over Oakland (Dec. 5). Purvis is now
second on the RedHawks, averaging 13.6 points per game.
RICHTER CONTRIBUTING IN ALL PHASES: Sophomore forward/guard Ana Richter
has contributed in all phases during Miami’s first seven games this season. She is
averaging 10.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. In the RedHawks win
over Morehead State (Nov. 29), Richter scored a career-high 20 points and brought in
seven rebounds in leading the team to a victory. In Miami’s double-overtime win over
Evansville (Nov. 16), Richter scored 19 points, and also had nine rebounds, six assists,
two blocks and a steal in 38 minutes of action. Against EKU (Nov. 24) Richter recorded
a career-high 10 rebounds. In the RedHawks last game against Oakland (Dec. 5), she
had nine points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block in 31 minutes
of action.
MCDONAGH MAKING IMPACT: Known for providing energy and doing the little
things that help the team win, sophomore forward Molly McDonagh has also been
filling up the stat sheet the past four games. Against EKU on Nov. 24, she had her first
career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. In Miami’s win over Morehead State on Nov. 29 she once again scored 10 points. She also
had eight rebounds, a career-high five assists and three steals in 31 minutes of action.
McDonagh did even better in the RedHawks win at Valparaiso on Dec. 2. She finished
with a career-high 16 points and had four rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of
action. She followed that up with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the

win over Oakland (Dec. 5). McDonagh is fourth on the RedHawks averaging 7.3 points per
game and is third with 6.0 rebounds per game.
WORKING OVERTIME: For the second time in four games, Miami went to overtime, falling 77-72 to EKU on Nov. 24. That is after defeating Evansville, 91-85, in double overtime
on Nov. 16. It’s the first time the RedHawks have had multiple overtime games in a single
season since the 2011-12 campaign when they defeated both Akron and Kent on the road
in an extra session. The 2002-03 team holds the Miami record for most overtime games in
a single season with six. All-time, the Red and White have played 53 total overtime games
and hold a 27-26 record in those contests.
LOOKING BACK AT EVANSVILLE WIN: Miami’s 91-85 double-overtime win over Evansville on Nov. 16 will not be forgotten anytime soon. It tied for the longest game in the Red
and White’s history. It was the first time Miami went to double overtime since an 86-81
loss to Butler on Dec. 13, 2008. The 91 points scored were the most for the RedHawks
since they also scored 91 in a 91-80 victory over Cleveland State on Dec. 29, 2013. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis played 46 minutes in the victory. It was the longest a Miami
basketball player was on the court since Jenna Schone went 47 minutes in that overtime
game against Butler.

NEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTE AGAINST NKU: Several of Miami’s newcomers had strong debuts against NKU last Friday. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis finished in double-figures with 15 points and was a threat behind the arc, hitting 4-for-8 with her
3-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Megan Galloway came off the bench and contributed six points, while freshman guard Kendall
McCoy had a team-high three blocks to go with her five points and two assists.
WE WERE HOME FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF NOVEMBER: The RedHawks began the season with five straight games at home
that will span the entire month of November. Miami did not hit the road until game six until it traveled to Valparaiso on Dec. 2. The
RedHawks went 3-2 on the season-opening stretch. It was the longest homestand the ‘Hawks have had since they also hosted five
in a row from Dec. 10-28, 2011. It is easily the longest season-opening homestand in team history. The 1994-95 team previously
held the mark, hosting its first three games in Millett.
WHAT RETURNS: The RedHawks return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year’s team, which featured more minutes
played by freshmen (53.45 percent of all minutes played), than any other Division I team in the nation (349 teams total). The bulk
of Miami’s statistical outputs from last year return as well. The ‘Hawks have 85.1 percent of their scoring, 89.2 of their rebounding,
72.2 percent of their assists, 92.4 percent of their blocks and 84.3 percent of their steal output back from the previous season.
RETURNERS WILL HELP: After having so many new faces last season, Miami will benefit from having seven student-athletes who
saw action last season take the floor in 2015-16. It will be led by two seniors, forwards Jessica Rupright and Tamira Ford. Five
sophomores also return after seeing extensive playing time as freshmen last season. Baleigh Reid earned a spot on the MAC AllFreshmen Team after averaging 10.7 points per game. She’s joined by returning sophomore guards Kayla Brown and Jazz Smith,
along with sophomore forwards Molly McDonagh and Ana Richter.
MCCUE TO MISS SEASON: Senior forward Hannah McCue suffered an injury in the offseason that required surgery and will cause
her to miss the 2015-16 season. The RedHawks will miss her performance on the court, she was the third on the team in scoring
at 8.0 points per game and led the team with 7.9 rebounds per game last year. She will be on the bench this season assisting the
coaches to lead a still young team in which 11 of the 13 other student-athletes are freshmen or sophomores.
SIX NEWCOMERS ADD DEPTH: Six newcomers will give Miami a deep roster to work with during the 2015-16 season. They are
led by redshirt sophomore Megan Galloway, who becomes eligible after sitting out last season after transferring from Detroit.
As a freshman for the Titans during the 2013-14 season, she recorded five double-doubles and was named to the Horizon League
All-Freshman Team. Galloway is joined by five freshmen, including fellow forward Kristen Levering, who led Miami with 13 points
in its exhibition win over West Virginia State last Friday. Morgan Horvath, Kendall McCoy, Leah Purvis and Nanci Hunter will
contribute to a deep guard position when they make their rookie debuts.
MIAMI PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN EAST: In the annual preseason poll, the Miami University RedHawks were picked to finish
fourth in the East Division after a vote by the league’s 12 coaches.
The defending MAC regular season and tournament champion Ohio Bobcats were picked to win the East Division by all 12
coaches. Akron finished second in the poll. Bowling Green followed in third, while Miami placed fourth. There was a tie for fifth
place between Buffalo and Kent State.
Eastern Michigan was pick to win the West Division, despite receiving only four first place votes. The coaches had diverging opinions on Ball State, as it received the other eight first place votes, but finished second in the poll by total points. They were followed
in the poll by Western Michigan, Toledo, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

WRIGHT BY THE MONTH
Cleve Wright returns for his third season in charge of the Miami women’s
basketball program. Wright came to the
RedHawks after a very successful 11-year
run at Gannon that featured five NCAA
Tournament appearances and two runs
to the Elite Eight.
Wright holds a career coaching record of
253-147. His Miami team last year went
7-23, but had the unique distinction of
being the youngest team in NCAA Division I with freshmen responsible for
53.45 percent of all minutes played on
the team. With all the experience they
gained, combined with a powerful recruiting class joining them, Wright has
the RedHawks ready to take the next
step this season.
Wright won 70 percent of his games
at Gannon (233-100), turning the Lady
Knights into a Division II powerhouse.
In his final season there in 2013, he led
Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The team finished the season ranked
sixth in the country. Wright brought the
Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament
in five of the his last seven seasons, with
his best year coming in 2009-10 when he
was named the NCAA Division II National
Coach of the Year after guiding them to
a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four
appearance. He coached seven All-Americans and 37 all-conference selections.
Gannon’s women’s basketball program
was extremely successful in the classroom as well under Wright. The Lady
Knights were ranked among the top 25
teams in GPA in eight of his final nine
years. In addition, 70 players earned allconference academic honors.
Wright joined Gannon after a three-year
stint (1999-2002) as the top assistant at
Northwestern under head coach June
Olkowski. While with the Wildcats, he was
responsible for the development of the
post players and was the team’s recruiting coordinator. His recruiting class in
2001 was rated as the 35th-best in the
entire nation by All Star Girls Report, and
he was voted as one of the top 25 assistant coaches in Division I in 2002.
Prior to his time at Northwestern, Wright
spent two seasons as an assistant coach
with Olkowski at Butler. He also spent
four seasons (1993-97) as the head coach
at Southwestern High School in Somerset, Ky., and was an assistant coach at
Duke during the 1992-93 season.
Wright earned his bachelor’s degree
from Berea College (Kentucky) in 1989.
He competed on both the men’s basketball and track teams, while serving as a
student assistant coach for the women’s
team. He earned a master’s degree in
athletic administration from Ball State
in 1992, working as a graduate assistant
coach there for two seasons (1990-92).
