SA farmers flock to succession
planning workshops
K
ondinin Group members from
Jamestown, Wudinna, Cummins and
surrounding areas took advantage of
the recent round of free Your family, Your
farm, Your future succession planning
workshops hosted by Kondinin Group
and supported by the Rural Financial
Counselling Service South Australia
(RFCSSA) and Primary Industries and
Resources South Australia (PIRSA).
The introductory succession planning
workshops focus on succession planning
and what you and your family need to know
to maintain control of your farm and family’s
future.
RFCSSA General Manager Kay Matthias
said it is fantastic to see farming families
using the opportunity to plan for their
farming future.
“Succession planning can be a difficult
process but with professional guidance and
an open approach it can also be very
successful for all involved.”
Succession
planning
co-presenter,
Kondinin Group’s Debra Beerworth said
handing over a business to the next
generation was often a challenging process,
but remained a top priority for many rural
families.
“Australia’s farmers manage significant
assets which are the result of hard work,
planning and commitment often over more
than one generation.”
“Negotiating
the
succession
of
management responsibilities and assets
from one generation to the next is ongoing,
but it is best not to ignore the benefits that
can flow from a well-planned succession
strategy.”

Trailing booms
pack a punch
Engineers tyre-kick: Kondinin
Group engineers, Josh Giumelli
and Ben White, with Group
researcher, Chris Warrick,
evaluate recent improvements
to trailing boomsprays.
Photos: Ben White and Chris Warrick
At a glance
Suspension booms and rigid
booms are the two primary
designs available.
Tank size and boom width
should be matched to your
spraying operations and rates.
Boom stability has a major
influence on spraying accuracy
and efficacy.
Boom suspension systems
have evolved over the
past seven years and now
feature complex hydraulics,
dampeners, accumulators and
springs to maintain boom
operating heights.
Boomsprays are generally built
to suit your operation and can
be customised at the time of
purchase.
Prices quoted are typically
base units which can be
accessorised as required.
Most boomspray manufacturers offer a build to order service. With this in mind,
farmers need to carefully consider their operations and on-farm requirements
before taking the plunge.
Kondinin Group last looked at trailing booms in 2003. With improvements in design
and technology, Kondinin Group’s Ben White, Josh Giumelli and Chris Warrick look
over the latest offerings from eleven boomspray manufacturers.
Spreading the wings
Boom width is arguably one of the most important
specifications to be determined before buying a
boomspray. With widths of up to 50m now available,
ensuring the width is a consistent multiple of other
operations for controlled traffic operations is
essential. For those that have not employed
controlled traffic operations, select a width that will
not limit the option of moving to controlled traffic
implementation in the future.
Boom Designs
There are two primary designs manufacturers
employ in boom construction; cable suspended and
rigid booms. Both designs have inherent advantages
and disadvantages when it comes to effective
spraying and storage for transport.
Cable suspended booms
Using independent cables attached to the boom
from a main centre frame, the boom is suspended,
usually with outrigger wheels to maintain operating
height. Higher centre frame towers permit wider
boom designs and as such, these booms are typically
used in large-scale farming operations requiring
boom widths of up to 50m. As a result, examples are
more commonly found from WA manufacturers
and include Beverley and Wespray.
2 Group Talk May 2011 No. 16 www.kondiningroup.com.au
Rigid booms
Rigid booms are self supporting and are generally
fabricated with a truss style boom arms hinging
from an independently suspended and fully floating
boom centre frame.
The suspension systems on these
booms can be relatively complex
with combinations of springs,
dampeners, air bags and hydraulic
accumulators to smooth and
steady the boom over terrain.
Most truss designs are at maximum width at
around 36m, but Hardi offer a 42m model.
Flexibility versus accuracy
While flexibility of the boom is important in
coping with the loads transmitted by bumps and
movement not absorbed in the centre frame, it is
also important that a constant height is maintained
for accuracy and efficacy of spraying operations. Too
much flexibility will allow the boom to move
excessively and may not provide effective spray
coverage. Excessive boom rigidity will see the boom
crack at points of stress concentration.

Research report
trailing boomsprays
Folding
Folding geometry varies between rigid and cable
suspended designs with rigid booms typically
incorporating complex three or four section folding
geometry and elevated at the front for storage and
transport.
By design, suspension booms generally have a
long tank trailer to maintain the suspending cable
length from the centre frame tower. Each wing
generally folds only once with the cable attachment
point immediately in front of the pivot.
Look for a design that is simple to fold which protects plumbing
and maintains a road-legal
operating width.
Hydraulically assisted folding will assist the
operator to prepare for transport without the need
for digging out the personal protective equipment
to prevent chemical contact.
Boom operating height
Look for a boom that can operate between 0.5m
and 1.5m elevation. Boom height control should be
easily adjustable to accommodate for operational
height changes on-the-go.
Breakaways
With booms getting wider, the risk of clipping a
post or an obstacle is increased. The general rule of
thumb is that breakaway sections are around 10 per
cent of the boom width. The well-designed
breakaways move backward and elevate slightly as
they move back to clear the obstacle as the boom
moves forward. Look for breakout sections with
dampeners to prevent excessive movement on
headlands.
Suspended: Cable suspended booms utilise a centre frame tower to support the width of
the boom and are teamed up with outrigger wheels to maintain operating height.
Rigid: Most rigid booms have complex suspension on the centre frame and are selfsupporting. Maximum boom width is up to 42m from Hardi.
The chemical warehouse: the tank
Tank volumes are increasing in line with boom
widths, considering operating speeds have not
typically decreased with wider boom widths. As an
example, a 50m wide boom operating at a
conservative 15km/h covers around 75ha every
hour. With an application rate of 80l/ha, the boom
would be powering through 6000 litres of mixed
product every hour. To prevent spending more time
filling than spraying, select a tank size matched to
your operations. While using a mobile batching
plant will reduce the fill time, carrying a larger
volume of product in a bigger capacity tank will
reduce the number of times needed to revisit the
filling site. Manufacturers are well placed to offer
assistance in matching boom width with tank
volume requirements.
Tank construction
Having determined the tank size requirement,
look for boomsprays fitted with tanks incorporating
sealing lids and widely spaced mesh that prevent
children accessing the tank. Lids incorporating spill
rings and hoses will prevent mess from product
overrun.
Well positioned nozzles fitted inside the tank will
thoroughly wash any residual chemical from the
tank. In addition, an effective agitation function will
help maintain chemical concentration consistency.
Look for clear tank level indicators that can be
easily seen from the fill point and the cabin. These
Breakaways: Breakaway sections
should be around 10 per cent of the
total boom width, be self-resetting
and rotate backwards and slightly
up to clear obstacles.

indicators are ideally made using a clear, durable
UV-stable material or mechanical indicators
attached to a tank float.
Ensure the tank itself is
constructed from UV stable
material.
Look for a UV rating of 8 which is standard for
most Australian manufacturers. Many WA
manufacturers
source
their
tanks
from
Rota-mouldings who provide UV8 rated tanks.
Access to the tank must be sturdy and the
provision of a hand-rail as found on Wespray booms
is highly regarded.
Hopper
Well-designed induction hoppers are easily
accessed and simple to use. Most booms inspected
featured a drop-down design that elevated the
hopper into a position protecting it when in
operation and transport.
Safety first: Hand rail and ladder access
provision ensures safe operator access to
the tank lid.
Trailer frame
Trailer frame design varied significantly between
rigid and suspension booms, the latter being much
longer to accommodate the boom fold geometry.
This allows plenty of space for PPE and chemical
drum storage. Look for a solid chassis with bracing
on chassis frame bends and a good quality smooth
finish, which will assist washing the boom down.
Most of the booms inspected were finished in twopack to provide UV resistance and surface finish
longevity, which will also assist resale value.
Pumps
Check the number of pumps fitted to the
boomspray unit. Most cable suspended designs
incorporate two pumps, one for fresh water and one
for spraying operations. Pumps can be either
hydraulic, PTO or independently driven.
Load and lock: Hopper access should
be simple with the hopper retracting
to a protected position for transport
and operation.
Check that pumps are securely
mounted as loose mounting is
often the cause of pump damage.
Easy access to pumps will assist cleaning and
maintenance.
Filters
Filters are essential on the suction line to the
pump and in the delivery line from the fill pump to
the main tank to prevent foreign material from
entering the system. In addition to individual nozzle
filters, inline filters fitted to each boom section help
prevent nozzle blockages.
Spray lines and plumbing
Spray lines and nozzles must be protected and
well secured to the boom. In saying this, nozzles
also need to be easily accessed for cleaning and
changing. Better gauges are those that are large
enough and well positioned to be viewed from the
tractor cabin.
Get a gauge on pressure: Gauges are ideally clearly visible from the cabin and able to be
isolated by taps. Individual section gauges as on this Sonic boom will help isolate any
sectional blockages.

Decals and labelling

complex, requiring well labelled valves, taps and
points of adjustment. While embossed labels are

preferable for their absolute resistance to weathering
and chemical degradation, high quality vinyl UV
proof adhesive stickers in most cases will provide
an adequate service life.
Wiring and electrics
Wiring that is well protected from the
environment, will have a longer lifespan particularly
where sectional solenoid controls are concerned.
Electrical protection: Housed and
protected electronics, which are prone
to damage from the elements and
corrosive chemicals.
A number of manufacturers have taken to housing the
electronic nerve centres in a
dedicated cabinet, which is sealed
from the elements.
Accessories
If planning to have accessories mounted to a
boomspray, ordering these at the time of
manufacture is advisable. This allows the
manufacturer to mount service electronics or
plumbing in place when constructing the boom.
One of the most common, and expensive,
accessories is the fitment of Weedseeker or WeedIT
selective spraying units. Because they are a
significant expense, around $3000 per metre, and
may not be needed for regular broadacre spraying
operations, manufacturers such as Sonic offer a
second optional interchangeable boom mounted to
a trailer. This allows the selective spraying boom to
be left in the shed when not in use in an effort to
protect the costly electronic components by only
using them when required.
Operator manual
Operator manuals must be clear on the unit
specifications, assembly and storage requirements.
Detailed information about the boom fold and
unfold process, transport dimensions, maintenance
and safety is essential.
The better operator manuals will also include
plumbing, hydraulics and wiring details including
diagrams as well as information relating to the
boomspray suspension, troubleshooting, cleaning
and decontamination and spare part numbers.

Accessorise: While a costly accessory, Weedseeker units can have a relatively short payback
period. To protect them as much as possible, Western Australian manufacturer, Sonic, offers
an interchangeable boom trailer so the units are not exposed to potential damage during
regular spraying.

Performing under pressure
Checking tyre pressures on a New Holland T9060 tractor
with triples was always a chore for South Australian farmer
Trevor Veitch.
That was until he modified the tyre valves so they could be
plumed into one common air line.
Trevor made the adapters using 25 millimetre brass shafting cut
to 25mm in length, internally threaded to ¼” BSP one end and
M12*1 thread the other end.
The internal body of the existing valves were then screwed out
and Trevor screwed on the threaded brass adaptor and push fit
elbows and tees.
Using liquid thread sealant on all threads and joins, he then used
3/8” truck brake air hose to plum the three tyre valves together.
Checking tyre pressure now is as simple as
connecting his compressor air line to the
Ryco air fitting and turning on the tap to the
common air line.
