Volkswagen Cuts Import Damages Volkswagen of America which has sent more than four million VWvehicles out onto U.S. highways is now in the fifth year of a unique loss prevention program that has already helped the company cut shipping and dockside handling damages by more than onethird. Transporting Volkswagensto the more than 1,150 authorized VWdealerships which sell them in the U.S. involves a fleet of more than 60 ships chartered to Wolfsburger Transport. A subsidiary of Volkswagenwerk AG, that company is responsible for all overseas transportation of VWvehicles. Rolf L. Meyer, manager of VWoA Insurance Services, reports that "shipping damageto Volkswagensis the lowest of all the makes of cars imported to the U.S." This, he said. is due in substantial part to VW’sloss prevention program which was started in 1965. Over the years since then, according to VWoA,the frequency of shipping damagehas been reduced by 35 per cent while the severity of damageto each ear has also been cut this by 13 per cent.
