ABOUT CREDIT UNIONS
Cooperative Structure
●
Credit unions are 501(c)(1) federally chartered or
501(c)(14) state chartered, not-for-profit
cooperative financial institutions.
●
While still governed by state and federal
regulatory agencies, credit unions’ decision
makers are 100% volunteer and democratically
elected at large.
●
This not-for-profit cooperative structure is the
reason all credit union earnings are returned to
their members in the form of lower fees, lower
interest rates on loans, better returns on savings
and enhanced member services.
Seven Cooperative Principles
Safe, Secure & Aware
●
Credit unions have continued to maintain
prudent lending standards and refrained from
risky lending practices, which has allowed them
to continue to lend through tough economic
times and remain a reliable credit source for
members.

●
Credit unions in Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming have more than $32 billion in assets
combined and are backed by more capital than other financial institutions – about 10%
on average.

●
Credit union member deposits are protected up to at least $250,000 by the National
Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). The NCUSIF is managed by the National
Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and fully funded by participating credit unions. No
government or taxpayer dollars have ever been used to bail out a credit union, and the
NCUSIF is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government.
Community & Philosophy
●
Credit unions are locally based financial
institutions with a history of community support and
community involvement. The credit union
philosophy of “People Helping People” is indicative
of the purpose of their cooperative structure and the
investment they support in their community and
members by providing financial education and
counseling services.
●
Credit unions provide individualized
products and services to fit the needs of the
community they serve and focus on increasing the
financial well being of their membership and the
greater community.

PRODUCTS, SERVICES & INITIATIVES
Credit Union Advocacy
Legislative and political advocacy is a primary focus for the staff at Mountain West Credit Union
Association. They provide a nonpartisan and unified voice for credit unions and the members
they serve at both the state and federal level.
Some current advocacy efforts include:
•
The Credit Union Small Business Jobs Creation Act aims to increase the
statutory cap in member business loans from 12.25% to 27.5%, which will
potentially create more than 146,000 new jobs nationally in less than one year.
Credit unions want to support communities’ local small businesses and job
growth and can do it at no cost to the taxpayers.

Tax Exemption Status: Unfortunately, some in Congress want to raise taxes
and impose new fees on 96 million credit union members who
represent 40% of all Americans, yet represent only 6% of the
assets in financial institutions nationwide. And, they want to do
this despite the fact that credit unions are not-for-profit.
Credit Unions’ unique not-for-profit, cooperative structure is
what drives the credit union philosophy. While still governed
by state and federal regulatory agencies, credit unions’
decision makers are 100% volunteer and democratically
elected at-large. The structure is the reason credit unions have
the ability to offer a competitive advantage. Credit Unions’ not-for-profit
federal tax exemption is the reason they are able to offer lower fees and
better rates for their members.
Credit Unions are exempt from federal income taxes because they are not-forprofit and member owned, however, they do pay Social Security, Medicare,
county, city, school and other local taxes.
Information is available online at donttaxmycreditunion.org.

Regulatory advocacy efforts focus on the fast-paced changes of financial regulations
and the great implications on credit unions and the communities they serve. The
Mountain West Credit Union Association staff works with local and national financial
regulatory agencies and provides expert guidance and support every day on a number
of regulatory issues affecting credit unions and their members.
Community and consumer advocacy focuses on a variety of news & resources
available. Search for a credit union that’s right for you at asmarterchoice.org, listen to
the Home & Finance Family Radio podcast series, and compare daily rates.

membership by raising awareness about the history and philosophy of credit
unions as part of the international cooperative movement.
•

association in Guanajuato, Mexico, and the Mountain West Credit Union
Association was formed in 2012 through the World Council of Credit Unions
International Partnership Program. This partnership brings participating credit
unions together to share the development of enhanced products and
services.
•
International young professional scholarships are available each year to
promote the next generation of leaders in the international credit union
movement and worldwide economic development.
Credit Union Services
A variety of products and services are provided to member credit unions under a
cooperative service model. Products and services include: marketing, lending, payment
systems, insurance, human resources, compliance services and platform products.

such as Invest in America, that helps credit union members save more on
American made vehicles.
•

unions reduce risk and remain current with ongoing, online assessments.
