Don has always stayed busy not only while serving with the fire department, but
serving his community. He has always been extremely involved in his church,
holding many positions within the congregation and the preschool the institution
sponsors.
A retired Farmingdale High School teacher, he coached football and wrestling
teams during his time there. Due to his guidance and coaching skills, Farmingdale
High School has earned many local, county and state championships.
Although he is currently retired, it seems that Don is busier than ever being
involved in many of the school’s sporting events and with sports-related
organizations throughout the state.
Don always has the students and community in mind.

Past Fire Service Community Achievement Award Recipients
Donald e. snyder
Ex-Chief Donald E. Snyder entered the Wantagh Fire Department in December
1951, when he was assigned to Engine 694. Don rose through the ranks over the
next decade or so, serving as chief through April 1964.
In the many years since, he has mentored younger members starting out in
the volunteer fire service. If someone planned more advanced training or had a
question relative to firefighting, Don was the person to go to and he would always
guide accordingly.
Don has served as commissioner of the Wantagh Fire District for more than
49 years. He has served in many capacities as commissioner, planning and
building three fire stations, coordinating renovation to the district’s buildings,
and purchasing apparatus. Don brought the department into a new era when he
introduced computer-aided dispatching.
