of Italy by his Excellency Don Gelasio
Caetani, Minister Plenipotentiary of
Said Government at Washington D.C.,
and Mary F. Henderson. Three pages.
Signature of Don Gelasio Caetani. Caetani (1877-1934), born in the
noble Caetani family, was an Italian mining engineer, World War I
officer, mayor of Rome, and Italian ambassador. He studied mining
and metallurgy at Columbia University. After graduating, he spent
many years in the West “where he continued his studies of mining
engineering in the most practical way, without his identity being
known to his fellow miners.” During World War I, he was a Colonel in
the Italian Engineers and “accomplished, at one blast, the destruction
of the top of Col dei Lana, as well as the Austrian stronghold on its
summit, which, until that time, had blocked the Italian invasion of the
Upper Trentino by way of the Cardevole Pass.” In 1922, he was made
ambassador to the United States. [Ref: Columbia Alumni News, Volume

Brady
c.1850’s
Hand
colored portrait of an unknown man (matted w/ oval window. 17.5”
H x 14” W) by Mathew Brady (c.1823-1896). Brady is often referred
328
to as the father of photojournalism and is most well known for
his documentation of the Civil War. Mathew Brady was the first to
undertake the photographic documentation of the American Civil War.
Brady was almost killed at Bull Run, VA. He got lost for three days and
eventually wound up in Washington D.C., nearly dead from starvation.
His photographs, and those he commissioned, had a tremendous
impact on society at the time of the war, and continue to do so today.
He and his employees photographed thousands of images including
battlefields, camp life, and portraits of some of the most famous
citizens of his time including Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee.
Mathew Brady lived the last few months of his life in a rooming house,
all alone, sick, and destitute. He was left penniless and unappreciated
even though he devoted his whole life to preserving and perpetuating
the history of his country. Towards the end of Brady’s life he once said
about the photographs he took: “No one will ever know what they cost
me; some of them almost cost me my life.” (Burger Collection) Est. $2,000 ~ $4,000 FHWAC# 22041

owned the Elmore claim that boasted of $325 gold per ton. Comstock
played up the Elmore as being as rich as the district given his name,
the Comstock Lode of Virginia City. South Boise drew nearly 1800
men by the summer 1863, but did not experience the expected 8000+
prospectors expected by the spring of 1864. The district struggled
with production from lode ore for lack of milling and transportation,
but had plenty of rich ore on hand. The primary milling technique
was arrastras. But this process was exceedingly wasteful with H. T.
P. Comstock was noted as being “disturbed to recover $10 to the pan
from tailings taken 100 feet below his arastra. William Waddington
was on the scene early and recognized the milling problems. He
gathered up several ore samples from his own the claim the Elmore
and from selected others and them assayed in Portland. The results
were outstanding: averaging $800 per ton with assays as high as
$7,000. A toll road was completed to South Boise by September, 1864
which allowed for Waddingham, and his partner, J. W. McBride, to haul
out 7 tons of ore, transporting the load to Portland. Waddingham was
able to erect a mill through his New York financiers, the Waddingham
Gold & Silver MC. Unfortunately, by 1865 the district was suffering
from unscrupulous promoters who left a bad taste in the pocket books
of potential South Boise investors. The New York Victor Co was the
notorious of the scams. Waddingham stuck it out within the district,
but had several milling set backs, not to mention any transportation
improvements to the district. Completion of the Oregon Short Line
finally in 1882-83 finally allowed for the district to enjoy some
prosperity. (Idaho State Historical Society). Est. $800 ~ $2,000

Charles M. Russell collection:
sketches and photographs
Charles Marion Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri in
1864. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a cowboy; a dream he began to fulfill at the age of 16 when he travelled to the Judith Basin of
central Montana. There, Russell was mentored by hunter and trader
Jake Hoover.
In 1882, Russell worked as a night herder with several cattle
outfits giving him the opportunity during the day to observe, sketch,
and document the activities of the cow camps. He worked as a cowboy and wrangler for eleven years before retiring in 1883 to become
a full-time artist. He lived in Montana the rest of his life.
During his lifetime, he completed nearly 4,000 pieces of art.
“He was the first “Western” artist to live the majority of his life in the
West. For this reason, Charlie knew his subject matter intimately,
setting the standard for many Western artists to follow.”
Russell died of congestive heart failure in his Great Falls home on
October 24, 1926.

Lot # 4407 Montana, Great Falls Charles Russell Collection (Sketches, Photographs, Documents)
c.1900’s This collection belonged to Jesse Lincoln Mitchell, who at one time lived next door to Charles M. Russell In Montana. The collection
contains three two-sided drawings by Charles M. Russell. The pieces are framed with double frames attached to each other, with mats and
double glass, so they can be viewed from both sides. the frame size is 20” H x 16” W. The drawings are of horses, iIndians, cowboys, dogs, buffalo,
bear—studies that were used for his paintings. Photos of some of the paintings that were sold from the collection are in this collection. There are
several photographs of Charles M. Russell (including an original photo of Russell taken October 17, 1926 just days before he died on October 24,
1926) and his home and studio in Great Falls, Montana. California collector Bill Burger acquired this collection, along with severe other pieces
of original Russell art many years ago.
Jesse Lincoln Mitchell, was called a sensitive sculptor and artist in “From Montana, The Magazine Of Western History”, (Winter, 1960), when
she shared her personal memories of a warm and helpful friendship with “The Greatest Of Them All” in the publication of “C. M. Russell, The
White Indian”—a book written from her original manuscript. That manuscript is also included in this collection. It is a fabulous 17-page writing
titled, “Russell The White Indian” by Jesse Lincoln Mitchell written in Great Falls, Montana where she and her family moved in 1912. They lived
next door to Russell. She tells many antidotes about Russell and talks about watching him paint. She writes: “There have been many notable
Characters in my life, but none so unique and unforgettable as the White Indian.”
Another manuscript by Jesse Bromley Lincoln, titled: “A Garden by the River Blows” is included. It is written about her time in when she first
moved to the “Wild West” of Mohave. George Wharton James (1858–1923) was a friend and constant visitor to the family. He was a prolific
popular lecturer, photographer and journalist, writing more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American
Southwest. Another friend and visitor was John Peabody Harrington (1884–1961) who was an American linguist and ethnologist and a specialist
in the native peoples of California. this writing ends with her husband falling ill with typhoid fever and the river flooding them from their home.
One more writing speaks about Jesse’s trip (1932) to the Blackfeet Reservation to meet General Hugh L. Scott and attend Blackfeet
ceremonials. Hugh Lenox Scott (1853–1934) was a post-Civil War West Point graduate who served as superintendent of West Point from 1906
to 1910, and Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1914 to 1917, including the first few months of American involvement in World War I.
He was assigned to the quarters only recently vacated by the widow of George Armstrong Custer. In fact, Scott was sent out to the Little Big Horn
battle site to mark gravesites for Custer’s men killed in the battle. He also had the opportunity to interview many of the Native Americans who
fought on both sides of the battle on June 25, 1876. Est. $15,000 ~ $30,000 FHWAC# 22038
