Cherry Creek High School is an exemplary school because
of its rich and diverse student activities program. With more
than 90 clubs, every student at Creek has an opportunity to get
involved. Many clubs have large memberships and long standing
traditions at Creek, while others are small and relatively new.
CCHS offers co-curricular and extra-curricular clubs, including
Service Clubs, who perform community service, donating their
time and money to local and national charities. We have a club for
every student’s interest and over 120 faculty/staff club sponsors.
The process of starting a club at Creek is relatively
easy, however, it requires several levels of approval. New
clubs may be started if a group of students has an interest
and an adult sponsor to supervise the activities. The students must obtain 10 signatures from interested students,
complete an application to start a club and set up a meeting
with the Activities Director to create a club constitution.
Once the constitution is approved, the club is able to meet.
At the beginning of each school year the Activities
office sponsors a Club Fair where existing clubs gather together to promote and solicit new members. This year the
Club Fair will be held on September 2nd from 10-1 pm in
the quad. Students will have an opportunity to meet club
leaders, find out when and where each club meets throughout the year and what the requirements are for each club.
Encourage your student to get involved at Creek and
have them attend the Club fair!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I am pleased to welcome all Bruins back to campus for the 2015-2016 school year at Cherry Creek
High School. Our 82 acre campus is beautiful, but it
is not the same without our 3,500 students and 275
faculty and staff members. Thankfully, we are all
back, rested and ready for an outstanding school year.
Our vision statement lists scholarship as our most
important value. In 2014-2015 we did well in the
classroom and continued to demonstrate that the
education we provide our students is geared to college preparedness for all. Early summer delivered
the scores for the Advanced Placement exams. Not to
my surprise, but certainly to my pleasure, I found that
91% of the students who took an AP exam had passed
with a 3 or higher on the 5 point grading scale. We also
graduated the class of 2015 with 68% of the seniors
having taken an AP at some point during their career.
Recently, I learned that the class of 2016 also performed well on the ACT during their time at Cherry
Creek. In fact, this year’s seniors set the standard for
the highest composite ACT score at CCHS since the
state of Colorado mandated the test for all juniors in
2001. The composite score was a 25.3 and I expect it to
continue to rise as the seniors take the ACT additional
times in preparation for college. I truly appreciate the
effort of our seniors in demonstrating to our underclassmen that academics are the top priority at Cherry Creek.
Students returning to Creek will find that we have
a new challenge course that is used for classes and
after school activities. I thank the many donors and
the efforts of our teachers in securing grants to allow
us to continue offering this program. In addition, after
a year’s worth of study and preparation, we have left
the Federal Food Program to run our own cafeterias
in a way that meets the needs of our students. The
two cafeterias have had some renovations to allow
us to prepare healthy and appealing food options to
our students. The hope is more students will stay on
campus to eat breakfast and lunch now that we serve
salads, custom made sandwiches, custom burritos,
burgers made on-site, Asian bowls, sushi and much
more. Any money made in the cafeterias goes back to
the students in the form of educational materials and
resources. More importantly, we feel we can better keep
the children safe when they stay on campus to eat in
our cafeterias. We are proud that we now offer appeal-
ing foods for every type of eater and we fund our own
free and reduced lunch services for those who qualify.
Do not hesitate to contact me or Michael Mazenko
(720-554-2185) with any questions you may have.
Finally, it is important that we keep in mind the few behavior
rules that we do have at Cherry Creek as we start the school
year. With a school of roughly 3800 students and adults, it is
imperative that we respect one another and treat each other in
a civilized manner. While it is unrealistic to think everyone
here will be friends, it is expected that everyone feel safe and
respected. Any behavior that deviates from this expectation
will be addressed appropriately. The warm August weather
also means some students will push the boundaries by wearing
short shorts, tank tops and other more revealing clothing. All
students must adequately cover their bodies so the focus can
be on school. Those students who are wearing inappropriate
clothing for school will be asked to change. For a full
description of the dress code see page 57 in the Bear Facts.
And finally, students may talk on their cell phones only while
in the cafeterias or outside. Any type of cell phone use is
prohibited in classrooms unless stated otherwise by the teacher.
Serving as the principal of Cherry Creek High School is more
than a job. This is my community, my home away from
home, and the school where my own children will one day
attend. As the leader of this school, I will continue to maintain
the Cherry Creek High School standard of excellence for
our current and future Bruins and I ask that you join me
in making the school outstanding yet again in 2015-2016.
Welcome back Bruins!
Sincerely,
Ryan T. Silva

Accountability Committee
The Cherry Creek High School Accountability Committee meets one Tuesday evening per month from
5-6:30 pm in the West Main Office Conference Room.
We review how CCHS is meeting its accountability goals for excellence and equity, for college
and post-secondary success, for a safe and caring environment, and for partnering with students,
parents and community members in the education
process. Each meeting generally includes a guest
speaker on a special topic of interest, a report from
Principal Ryan Silva, an update on Creek’s UIP (Unified Improvement Plan), and a brief report from the
District Accountability Committee representative.
The first meeting this year is on Tuesday evening, September 15th. Principal Ryan Silva will give an update
on all new facilities at CCHS that are occurring thanks
to the success of the 2012 bond election, and he will
lead a brief tour to show us the progress first hand.

Collaboration Days:
Cherry Creek High School continues to be one of the best high schools in the country, but we strive to improve.
For the last five years we have had collaboration days that provide us common time outside of the non-contact
days to work together as a faculty on curriculum, assessments, individual student needs, vertical articulation, and
other areas that will greatly affect student achievement. For this reason, we will once again have five late start
days in 2015-2016 where we will incorporate a one-hour collaboration period. Many schools around the country have already included this time in their schedules so they may better provide professional learning teams.
Last year we found value in the common time together and we look forward to utilizing this time again this year.
The five collaboration periods will be from 7:00-8:00 am with the school day starting at 8:10. Transportation
will not be affected on these days and students who wish to report to school at the normal time of 7:00 may do so.
We will have adult supervision in both cafeterias as well as the library. Of course, the feedback from the students
has been that they would appreciate a little extra sleep once a month, which would also be fine if parents approve.
I want to assure you that by adding the collaboration period to our calendar during the year no instructional time is lost. We will continue with the same number of instructional minutes in the school year by ending our school day at 2:51 and by cutting one minute from the passing period between period 2 and 3. Below you will find the dates for the collaboration periods as well as the schedule we will use on those days.
Please note that one of the dates is a Friday. This is the case because our hope is to combine the collaboration day in October with our Homecoming schedule. The thought is to minimize the number of days that have
a shortened schedule given the increased state testing that will already take valuable instructional time.

COUNSELING CONNECTION
The 2015-16 school year is underway and the Counseling Department is excited to welcome all students
back to school, with a special welcome to all of the new freshmen!
Due to a departure on our staff, a new counselor has joined our team this year. Ms. Katie Yvars has
worked as a counselor in the Cherry Creek School District previously, though she spent last year working
in a counselor/dean role at another area high school. She worked closely with students as she coordinated
the post graduate center in her prior school and is looking forward to working with all of her Creek
students this year. She has already hit the ground running and we are excited to welcome her to our
counseling staff.
To eliminate any student shifting in counseling caseloads, the alphabetical breakdown this year will
remain the same as it has been for the past three years. Adapting to changes can be challenging, but
please know that if you are one of the students/families involved in a counselor change this year, we will
work together to make the transition to a new counselor as smooth as possible. Please find the 2015-2016
counseling alpha breakdown below.

A Little About Creek 101
Creek 101 is designed to assist freshmen with the transition to high school and to help ensure a successful
year academically, socially and emotionally. Creek 101 meets once a week (as designated on student
schedules – A is Monday, B is Tuesday, C is Wednesday and D is Thursday) during the student’s
assigned lunch period throughout the entire first semester and will be taught by teachers who have been
trained to work specifically with freshman and a transition curriculum. Counselors are an integral part of
this curriculum, especially when working with academics. Counselors will meet with Creek 101 classes
approximately four times over the fall semester and all freshmen in Creek 101 classes will be scheduled
for a brief individual freshman conference appointment with their counselors as well. The topics covered
specifically by the Counseling Department are as follows:




Graduation and college admission credit requirements
Introduction to Family Connection by Naviance
Four year plan and transcripts
Registration for sophomore year courses
The Counseling Department’s goal for ALL freshmen is to learn, grow and become active, productive
Creek citizens. It is also our goal that each student learns where to go for support when he/she is faced
with a decision, whether it is academic, social or emotional.
We look forward to working with and getting to know our new ninth graders, and continuing to work with
all new and returning students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email your son
or daughter’s counselor.
We’re excited for a great year ahead!

Keeping our Students Safe: What is Creek doing?
The recent passage of Senate Bill 15-213, aka the “Claire Davis” bill has widened the
conversation about what schools are doing regarding the safety of their students. The bill
amends the “Colorado Governmental Immunity Act” (CGIA) to recognize that a duty of
reasonable care exists with respect to public school districts, charter schools, and their
employees to exercise reasonable care to protect students, faculty, staff, and others when
within the school facilities or participating in school-sponsored activities.
Cherry Creek School District has responded immediately with a series of trainings and
guidelines for schools designed to improve the evaluation and communication regarding
students of concern. CCHS staff has participated in the training and has already responded
with tightening up communication and procedures for evaluating students; a process
which has been ongoing for many years as part of our safety procedures. Vital to this effort
is the relationship with Greenwood Village SROs who have also been a part of the trainings
and conversations.
More importantly, for parents, is letting you know what we do when we are concerned
about a student. Information comes to the school about students from many sources.
Students, parents, teachers, outside community members – all may contact the school via
the Care Line (720-554-CARE) or other venues. Our faculty and staff have been trained to
know to get this information to the appropriate personnel so a team can be assembled to
evaluate the concern. This team may include the student’s Dean, Counselor, the Mental
Health provider, an Administrator and other personnel as deemed necessary.
The assembled team will determine who will collect the information to conduct an
evaluation. Data collection will include interviews with the student, the parents, possibly
other students, and depending upon the information, may also include searching the
student’s locker, backpack and/or car.
Throughout the process we do our best to respect the student of concern and their family.
Innocent until proven guilty is still the legal compass of our country and we take this
seriously at CCHS. In cases where we have significant concerns, forthright communication
will be our standard throughout the process, but the safety of our community will also be
forefront in our plans.
When we have concerns about a student we work with the family, school personnel and
any involved outside agencies to develop a plan to keep both the student and the
community safe. These plans are made on a case-by-case basis as every student and
situation is unique. Your cooperation as a family is key to the success of the plan.
We appreciate your support as we respond to the changing safety concerns of public
agencies, in particular our nation’s schools. Thank you for your continued support in
keeping CCHS safe and healthy.

What a flash this summer has been – a well deserved break for students, parents, and faculty alike! The Class of 2015 is packing
their bags, heading off to residential halls, and new adventures. I am positive these Cherry Creek grads will shine at college just
as they did on our campus just a few months ago. With a new fall approaching I welcome our newest class, the Class of 2019, on
our campus and I am eager to get back to work with our seniors, the Class of 2016! Prior to school starting we hosted our
inaugural “Creek to College” Application Boot Camp on Monday August 3 rd and Tuesday, August 4th with over 110 seniors
working on their college essay, college timeline, and completing the Common Application. Each summer gives the Post Grad
Specialists and me a chance to reflect on the progress and success of the previous year and an opportunity to evaluate and to
grow our programming based on the needs of our students, families, and community and the ever-changing college process. Our
mission is to provide the best resources possible so that every student is able to make an educated decision on which college is
the best fit. Our college programming is robust and it starts as early as the freshman year for families who are new to the college
process or just want to catch back up to speed. You will want to check our college-planning schedule for the most current list of
college programming. The College Planning Schedule can be found on our revised Post Grad webpage
http://cherrycreek.cherrycreekschools.org/Departments/Post%20Grad/Pages/Post%20Grad.aspx
The webpage and Family Connection by Naviance will be updated regularly as both are important resources to communicate
with the members of our Creek community. I hope you will take advantage of what we will be offering this upcoming school year.
Welcome back!

should schedule their senior interview in Post Grad as soon as possible. Don’t delay! Counselors’ schedules fill up
quickly.
You are able to see if your teacher recommendation letters have been submitted to Post Grad on Naviance. Click on the
“Colleges” tab and then on the “colleges I am applying to” link under “my colleges”; if your teacher letters have been
submitted to Post Grad, you will see your teachers’ name listed there. If no names are listed, you may want to gently
remind your teacher(s) to complete your letter. Remember to give the teachers plenty of advance notice and thank your
teacher for their time and effort.
Check out the new Common Application! It is easier to navigate and has over 600 colleges from 47 states and 13 countries.
The CA is now available at https://www.commonapp.org/
BE AWARE OF DEADLINES! The Post Grad Center requires students to submit “transcript request forms” at least fifteen
working days in advance of college and scholarship application deadlines. School breaks and holidays are not considered
working days. When completing your college or scholarship applications online, you must request that we send your
transcript, and/or teacher and counselor recommendations according to the deadlines. Please check the Post Grad
website or stop by the Post Grad Center to learn about the deadlines!
Not sure what to write about or how to finish you college essay? Master teachers from the English department will be
available to help seniors in all aspects of the college essay in the Post Grad Center during 5 th and 8th periods Monday
through Thursday.
If you plan to take or retake the ACT, SAT, or SAT Subject Tests this fall, remember to register soon. Most colleges
require the ACT or SAT to be taken by the end of December of your senior year. The easiest way to register is at
www.collegeboard.org for the SAT and Subject Tests and www.actstudent.org for the ACT.

We continue to team with Naviance and eduDocs to submit transcripts and supporting application documentation to

ATHLETICS
Another year of Bruins athletics is upon is and we are
looking forward to great things! Our fall sports teams look
strong due to summer workouts and training and will hit the
ground running. Softball has a new coach, Jamie Heflin, and
the team has many returning players. Field Hockey also has
a new coach, Taylor Silvestro. The Bruins will kick off the
season Thursday August 28th at 5:45 pm against Mountain
Vista. Cheerleading has many returning varsity athletes, and
although many of them are underclassmen, they made a lot of
progress last year and are striving for a solid finish at state.
Cross country kicked off the season with the Steve Lohman
Invite at the Cherry Creek reservoir and the boys group did
very well. The ladies team is has a great shot at a state title.
Football is coming off a state championship last year
and starts this year with a #2 ranking. The defense should be
very strong and the offense will be led by senior quarterback
Joe Caplis. We have a very young Boys Golf team this year,
coached by Kubiak, giving many players a chance to grab a
varsity spot. Gymnastics has multiple state qualifiers returning and should be a strong contender this year. Men’s soccer
is ranked #6 to start the season. Coach Curi is very excited
about this years team and I have heard the team is a very tight
group, which typically leads to success. Men’s tennis will
be strong once again, although they have lost a number of
players from last years team. The Bruins depth should be a
factor though as the team looks to win it all again. The poms
team is lead by new coach, Faymie Westmoreland, and they
are very excited about their prospects this year. The team
has been working hard all offseason and should challenge
for league and state. Last but not least is the #3 ranked lady
Bruins volleyball team. The team will be strong, play a tough
schedule, and will compete for league. Coach Moos and the
ladies have been working all offseason so they will be ready.
As always parent and community support help make
Cherry Creek Athletics what it is. Thank you to everyone
for your support. If you would like to sponsor a team, hang a
banner in the gym, or advertise your business on our website
please contact me at [email protected].

ACTIVITIES
Welcome Back Bruins!
Some special events took place this summer when we
were able to host many of our Alumni on campus during
the class of ’65, ’85 & ‘95 reunions. It was so exciting
to see these fabulous Creekers as they all talked about
their memories of being here at Creek! Several of them
mentioned all of the clubs or activities in which they were
involved, and eagerly asked questions about the student
organizations we have presently on campus. I would love
it if our students, 30, 40 or 50 years from now, are able to
talk about all of their great memories of being involved at
Creek! Many of our student organizations have already
started meeting for the year, and we want you to be a part
of them! The Cherry Creek High School Club Fair on
Wednesday, September 2, 2015, during periods 4, 5, and 6
by the Old School House will provide students a chance to
get involved and learn about the activities available to students at Creek. Please be sure to watch the announcement
screens, which are outside of the Activities Office, the Fine
Arts hallway, the East Building and in the West Lobby, for
updated information about what is happening at Creek.

On the Band Beat…
CCHS Marching Band kicks off the season in NEW UNIFORMS!
The Cherry Creek High School Marching Band won 2nd place overall, as well as the award for Best Percussion
Unit at the 2015 Western Welcome Week Parade, held Saturday, August 15th in downtown Littleton. The
parade was the first performance of the season for the 130 student musicians and color guard members in the
Bruin Band. And it was the band’s first performance ever in BRAND NEW UNIFORMS. Drum Majors Luca
Zocchi, Maya Cutforth and Abbey Roark led the band as they played a crowd-pleasing rendition of Taylor
Swift’s SHAKE IT OFF, the student-chosen parade tune for this season! The parade followed two weeks of band
camp, where students worked for six to eight hours a day on both parade marching and their 2015
competition show titled, “Every Time A Bell Rings.” You’ll be able to see the band in action soon at the first
home football game on Friday, Sept. 4th at 7pm when Creek takes on Regis at Stutler Bowl.

~ Determining the Future of Cherry Creek Schools ~
What:
The Cherry Creek School District continuously evaluates our system to ensure that upon
graduation all students are prepared to compete and succeed in college and career. This process
was last completed in 2006 and resulted in updated programming, additional options for students
and new graduation requirements.
To that end, the District is asking for input from all stakeholders regarding:
 What are the hopes, dreams and desires that you have for students as learners?
 What skills/knowledge/attitudes or behaviors/dispositions will a successful graduate
in the year 2021 need to possess to be college and career ready?
 What specialized programming options may need to be created for students to be
college and career ready?
How:
 Solicit feedback from stakeholders through community forums and online venues
 Solicit feedback from Cherry Creek School District graduates to determine their level
of preparation for college and career
 Engage with internal and external experts on systems, structures and programming
necessary to prepare all students for a successful future
 Review literature and current research on best practices and college and career
readiness
