 Musician – Composer - Producer
Japhlet Bire Attias plays the Chapman Stick®, a
10-string tapping instrument played almost like a
piano, and he hails from a mix of places as varied as
the music he produces. Inspiring him from NY state
and Minnesota, central and Caribbean Mexico to
Budapest, Romania and France has been everything
from Yes, ELP and King Crimson, to Brazilian and
Mexican
music, French singers, Jazz, Classical and
J
Jungle, spawning a surreal and soothing concoction
of Progressive, World, and Electronic Jazz At the age of 22, after having been a guitarist
for 7 years, he bought a Chapman Stick and
immediately started playing live. From Stick
seminars and music festivals to Jazz clubs,
bars, and theaters, from progressive rock,
Jazz and Classical to improvised music in duo
and trio formats in Mexico, the U.S. and
across Europe, Japhlet has covered many
genres and age groups in his musical
expeditions.
In the fall of 2005, Japhlet co-founded the Pan Metropolitan Trio, a small jazz outfit made up of 2
U of M graduates playing the Tuba and Drums, along
with the Stick.
In addition, Japhlet has played with the popular
Minneapolis band Nothing Static, with Stick Up!,
featuring renown sax player Doug Little and Latvian
drumming sensation Haralds Bondaris. Sponsored

Japhlet now presents his official debut release, uniting some
of the best musicians from Minnesota’s Twin Cities area
playing Drums, Sax, Bass Clarinet, Viola, Tuba, Congas and
Guitar. As Glenn Poorman, a long-time Stickist and leading
exponent in U.S. noted, “Japhlet has managed to give us a
record consisting mostly of Stick without necessarily releasing
a “Stick record." I feel that it's records like these that will push
this instrument into the future.”

“One of the best CDs I received all year!” -‐Keith Emerson, legendary keyboardist for the band Emerson, Lake and Palmer. "I greatly enjoyed the music, cover art, directions and style, -‐ everything. I love his approach to jazz. I think of it as "living jazz" and not an old estate to be managed. This album holds great promise and seems perfectly planned in all the right directions. " -‐Emmett Chapman, Inventor of the Chapman Stick ® and renown player. I'm impressed by his musical sense. Nice variety of covers, and good originals for balance. More than his last CD, he steps front and center and presents Japhlet the Stick player. Good job. Keep it going. I wish him great times with the new CD leading the way. -‐Steve Adelson, Stickist renown for his solo and Jazz work with Chieli Minucci, Jeff Berlin and Danny Gottlieb among others. "This CD is epic in its scope! This is one of the most ambitious and well-‐executed Stick discs ever. The music is totally inspired and inspiring. I'm excited for him to see where he is in his musical life. " -‐ Greg Howard, Stickist renown for his solo work and with the Dave Matthews Band. “Attias wields the Stick capably, with each short tune standing as a miniature etude to display his considerable technique. At once challenging and relaxing, Japhlet Bire Attias and this release merit further attention.” -‐Dimitry Ekshut, Jazz Improv NY magazine This is a really great record. There is simply nothing not to like about it. The music is engaging, playful, melancholy, dramatic and the execution is near perfect. Japhlet has managed to give us a record consisting mostly of Stick without necessarily releasing a "Stick record." It is records like these that will push this instrument forward. Well done! -‐ -‐Glenn Poorman, long-‐time Stickist and musician, recording artist and main contributor to the Midwest US Stick scene, seminars and festivals. www.japhletba.com
