LEADING THE WAY INTO FALL... MADISON AREA YMCA FALL SESSION BEGINS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2016 PRIORITY MEMBER REGISTRATION Begins Tuesday, August 23, at 7:30PM online or in person. OPEN REGISTRATION FOR ALL Begins Tuesday, August 30, at 7:30PM in person only. Members may continue to register online. MADISONAREAYMCA.ORG WELCOME TO FALL SESSION 2016 DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS As we lead the way into fall, we know that all kids have great potential. At the Y, we work every day to help them set and achieve personal and educational goals. From early education to career readiness, the Y gives all kids the opportunities they need to one day become president (if they choose)! We are building tomorrow’s leaders and helping children and teens develop self-confidence, character values and leadership skills by providing innovative and nurturing youth and teen programming. Our children and teens build skills and confidence as they explore new interests and passions through the Y. Leadership and academic enrichment programs include STEM programming, Teen Leaders Club and new opportunities such as Tech Talk Across the Ages—along with our dedicated efforts to provide financial assistance to ensure that every child has an opportunity to envision and pursue the best possible future. The Y is committed to helping families and communities stay strong and healthy. 62% of parents with infants and preschool-age children struggle to find affordable and reliable childcare in their communities. The Y offers quality childcare for infants to schoolage children. Not only are their kids safe, but they’re kept stimulated with fun, educational activities, allowing parents to support their families while their kids are in good hands. Today, only 27% of people say they feel very closely connected to their neighbors. With people feeling increasingly isolated from one another, community-needs often go unmet. Through the Madison Area YMCA, more than 800 people from different backgrounds work side by side with neighbors and community partners to improve and contribute to a stronger, more connected society. Through our Volunteer Program and TOGETHERHOOD®, the Y offers opportunities for people to give back to their communities. With our batteries recharged from the lazy days of summer, we get back into routines, start new projects and set goals! The Y is doing the same —helping people reach their goals in fitness and wellness for a healthy mind, body and spirit. More and more families are looking for a place to be active together, learn about healthy living and strengthen their relationships. The Y provides families with activities and information on all of the above. There’s something for everyone at every age. Let the Y lead the way this fall to a healthier, brighter future. A BETTER YOU MAKES A BETTER US. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. From athletics, to education, to health services, to safe spaces, the Y fills the gaps where society falls short. Because we believe every person and every community deserves the chance to thrive. Through our STEM programs, including enrichment offerings, programs at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center and our summer day camps, we prepare youth today for the future. She now peers out the windows of the lobby to see if her friend Ann Cascino is driving into the parking lot. arthritis pain.” She then brightens and says, “I’m 86 and still on the move.” “Ann has told me that she’s sad on the weekends when she doesn’t come to the Y,” says Kathleen Dinan, a member services representative who befriended Ann around the time of the Y’s senior Masquerade Ball. “She had bought a ticket and told me she wasn’t sure if she could go because of the physical limitations she has walking and getting into the building.” “I explained that a handrail would be so appreciated—and it was installed right away. I’ve been shown great kindness here,” says Ann. “It’s a huge help and it makes me so happy when I see other people using it.” At about 9:15 a.m., she recognizes Ann’s silver Avalon pulling into a handicapped-accessible parking space. Ann has arthritis and has difficulty walking. Betty exits the sliding doors, walks the short distance and opens the door. A smiling Ann maneuvers out of the driver’s seat and steadies herself with a cane. Betty links her arm into Ann’s and slowly they make their way into the building so that Ann can do a 20-minute workout in the Fitness Center and an hour-long Senior Fitness class at 11 a.m. A Y member for 11 years, Ann can’t say enough about the joy that the Y brings her. Naming fitness instructors including Susan Sheeley and Donna Sue Dowton as well as physical therapist Matthew Riordan of Professional Physical Therapy, LLC, who has an office at the Madison Area and Summit Area YMCAs, she says, “They’re all so kind, caring and compassionate. I feel different when I come out from when I go in. The Y picks me up,” she laughs, adding, “And my Betty is always my steady.” Settling into a seat on the sofa in the lobby and looking over at Betty, Ann says, “See how lucky I am? She’s my guardian angel. I’m so happy.” “I’ll keep coming to the Y for as long as I can drive,” says Ann who drives 25 minutes from East Hanover. “This is a great place to come. There’s something for everyone and it’s safe, friendly and fun.” “She found me,” says Betty who recalled Ann teetering next to her car one day. “I went over and asked if she would like some help. She did and it kept going from there.” Ann and Betty’s friendship encapsulates the sense of community that the Y provides for people of all ages. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Ann can be found socializing with Betty and friends before she takes on her fitness routine. And her grandson, Sal, who lives in Manhattan, also ensures it. “My grandson calls every day to check on me and ask if I’m going to the Y,” Ann says. “The classes are wonderful,” continues Ann, noting that she sets her own pace. “I can sit in a chair and use the weights, ball and stretchy bands to work out every part of my body.” Getting serious for a moment, Ann says, “I always pray: Dear God, just give me one day with no Why the Y is the Madison Area YMCA’s column on madisonareaymca.org and TAPinto.
