Happy Independence Day! We hope you all enjoy a great time of celebrating our Founding Fathers’ vision and efforts. It’s been 234 years since our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence. Here’s a point to ponder… the amount of tax that the average American citizen now pays is significantly greater than the amount that American colonists were paying when our Founding Fathers were moved to break America from Britain in the first place and listed “For imposing taxes on us without our Consent” among the grievances against the King. We’re just sayin’…………… We’re introducing a new feature called Dear Bikerprfsr (BP), sharing a ‘tongue in cheek’ take on the pressing issues of today’s biker. You’ll find it on page 8 this month. BP is a singles-scene advice column alum, offering insights into matters of the heart, motorcycle maintenance, and whatever other topics his good friends José, Jack, and Jim might steer him toward. Got a question to throw at Bikerprfsr? Drop him a note c/o [email protected]. We’ll get it to him. The Motorcycle Rights Community was dealt a harsh blow on Thursday June 24. Sputnik, leader of the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association has died; reportedly from a massive heart attack. He was the epitome of a Freedom Fighter; a passionate advocate for the MRO community, admired and respected by people across this Nation. We did not know him personally, but had the good fortune to hear him speak when he was here in Phoenix. He was a great motivator to the Bikers Rights cause. He was truly a ‘force to be reckoned with’ in the Legislative Halls of our nation, not only from his own efforts but because of the many whom he taught and inspired. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones for their loss. For those who wish to contact TMRA II, Texas Motorcycle Rights Association, we have posted their edress and web info in our Forum, under the posting entitled ‘Sputnik’. That’s gonna do it for us this month. Ride safe, and Keep Your Butts On Your Putts! Suite 120 Tempe, AZ 85282 AZ Rider Motorcycle News July 2010 HOME AZ Rider Angry French Motorcyclists Snarl Traffic In Protest NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES May 19, 2010 Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Forty thousand motorcyclists demonstrated all over France in protest of a recent Government announcement to fine any bikers caught filtering through traffic (“lane splitting”), and more than 60 cities saw their roads blocked by hordes of angry riders who said NON to French authorities who propose to treat motorbikes, scooters and mopeds like cars and require them to stay in their lane one behind another. So, they behaved like cars! On March 13th the La Fédération Française Des Motards en Colère (FFMC - the French Federation of Angry Bikers) urged all motorcyclists to occupy the space of one car in each lane, and within minutes an enormous traffic jam was created that gridlocked the whole of Paris on a busy Saturday afternoon as car drivers were stuck in traffic until late in the evening. While bikers blocked the roadways above ground, other protestors went underground bringing the subway system to a grinding halt in response to a statement made by French Transport Secretary Jean-Marc Belotti, who said “If they (bikers) are not happy, they can take the metro like everyone else.” They inconvenience us, we will inconvenience them, responded the FFMC, which set a fine example of civil obedience to demonstrate the impact of motorcycles on traffic flow, good or bad. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he decided he would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem -- how to carry all of his purchases home. While he was scratching his head, he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked: “Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane ?” The farmer said: “Well, as a matter of fact, my farm is very close to that house. I would walk you there but I can’t carry this lot.” The old lady suggested: “Why don’t you put the can of paint in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm, and carry the goose in your other hand?” “Why, thank you very much,” he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he said: “Let’s take my shortcut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.” The little old lady looked him over cautiously, then said: “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall and have your way with me?” The farmer said: “Holy smokes, lady! I’m carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The old lady replied: “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I’ll hold the chickens.” An elderly man on a Moped, looking about 100 years old, pulls up next to a doctor at a street light. The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?” The doctor replies, “A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!” states the doctor proudly. The Moped driver asks, “Mind if I take a look inside?” “No problem,” replies the doctor. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his Moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right... but I’ll stick 5 with my Moped!” Just then the light changes, so the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 160 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly WHOOOOSSSHHH! Something whips by him going much faster! “What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?” the doctor asks himself. He presses harder on the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it’s the old man on the Moped! Amazed that the Moped could pass his Ferrari, He gives it more gas and passes the Moped at 275 mph. He was feeling pretty good until he looked in his mirror and saw the old man gaining on him AGAIN! Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 320 mph. Not ten seconds later, he sees the Moped bearing down on him again. The Ferrari is flat out, and there’s nothing he can do! Suddenly, the Moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end. The doctor stops and jumps out. Unbelievably, the old man is still alive. He runs up to the bangedup old guy and says,“I’m a doctor.... Is there anything I can do for you?” The old man whispers, “Unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror.” CENSORED Mention ABATE for 10% discount on cabin and RV Hook-ups! The first 2 years it was presented by Desert Thunder Motorcycle Shop and for the last 6 years by Vietnam/Legacy Vets M/C. Chapter L, Lake Havasu AZ and Iceman are quite the hosts. It was originally started to protest the high prices in Laughlin. Both Fri and Sat night there was live music at the Eagles in Lake Havasu. With 2 large indoor bars everyone had a great time. The poker run started Sat morning at 9am at the Eagles and also The Sand Bar in Parker. They started from 2 locations so the people coming from the Parker area could stop and get their cards on the way to the Eagles. $2000 went to George Arthur from San Diego, CA. for the high hand and $500 to Jeff (I didn’t catch his last name but everyone seem to know him), with the low hand. Jeff donated back $300. The proceeds went to Veteran Programs such as the American Legion, Patrick Tinnell Skate Park and scholarships to the VFW and more. The Vietnam/Legacy Vets did a great job and Iceman would like to thank everyone that helped. The VNV/LVMC would also like to thank the Red Iron Brotherhood MC for their attendance. It was a real nice turn out. I wanna say it was good to see so many of the Devil’s Disciples there to support this event. I look forward to next year and doing this run again. Service members need to enroll PROMPTLY and do it NOW by following these steps: Dear Bikerprfsr (BP) is an advice/educational column by and for motorcycle enthusiasts, kind of like a Bikeipedia. None of the advice or comments should be taken seriously. The author, editors, & publishers are not liable for any of the content. Bikerprfsr has a Ph.D. in levity and has been riding for 40 years, starting at age 14. • Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge. Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA Healthcare at any time in the future. • A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the process becomes more difficult. • If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy of your DD214, and two forms of picture identification. • Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a regular, reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to be noted in your medical records. • Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. Do Not Procrastinate!! Know your rights and your responsibilities. If you are not sure, ASK-ASK-ASK-ASKASK!!! Ensure that your transition is smooth. Know what you need to do, and DO IT! • Join a veterans service organization - American Legion, DAV, Rolling Thunder®, VFW, AMVETS, etc. DEAR BP: I have noticed that almost all bikers wear the color black. What is the reason for that? Hue Black DEAR HUE: For men, it seems like they want to imitate their heroes like Zorro, Batman or Johnny Cash by wearing black. The real reason they wear black is that slobber stains and spilled beer do not show on their clothes. Women bikers wear black because it is the best color to disguise their weight. DEAR BP: I would like to buy a motorcycle but it seems so complicated to shift gears, brake, accelerate, and turn. Is this a skill you are born with or can it be learned. Klutz Jones DEAR KLUTZ: I am sure you already possess the skills to ride a motorcycle. Men learn by driving a car while drinking beer, smoking, shifting gears, looking at babes, and braking. Women have experience wiping runny noses, cooking and talking on the phone at the same time. You can start out slowly by buying a scooter, cycles that have an automatic transmission, or by buying training wheels. DEAR BP: I have noticed that bikers always back into parking spaces rather than just pulling into a slot. Parallel Parker DEAR PARALLEL: The reasons for this are two-fold. One reason is that law enforcement, who cruise through parking lots, cannot write down or take pictures of license plates without getting out of their cars. Another reason is that cycles weigh quite a lot (mine weighs 750 lbs). When bikers stop, usually at a bar, it is much easier to leave while intoxicated by just pulling out. To have to back the cycle out after a few beers is dangerous. IT’S YOUR DUTY TO DO SO! “WELCOME HOME, CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE, AND GOOD LUCK” Michael DePaulo, National Parliamentarian Rolling Thunder®, Inc. Plt. Sgt. USMC, RVN DEAR BP: I have seen that most bikes have a little bell on them. What is the reason for that? Kid Klangger DEAR KID: The story goes that the bell has some magical power to ward away road gremlins making it safer for the biker on the highway and roads. A more believable explanation has to do with cows. Farmers put bells on their cows (cow bells) so they could detect or find their livestock on huge acreage. Wives and girlfriends got wind of this and put the bells on bikes so they could tell at what time their man comes home at night/morning. Airport Security Here’s a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports. Have a booth that you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you. It would be a win-win for everyone. There would be none of this crap about racial profiling and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial. Justice would be quick and swift. *Case Closed!* 24 hour service 7 days a week Gary Dunham 480-306-5364 Office 480-299-8008 Cell 480-258-6978 Fax Copyright 2010 Send your questions or comments to Bikerprfsr c/o the editors, [email protected] Something Terrible Happens in Business When You Don’t Advertise 12 N Center St; Mesa, AZ 85201 NW corner of Center & Main in Executive Suites www.alliancebailbondsaz.com . . . . Trevor Drown was recently drafted - not for the military, but rather to run as the Independent Candidate for United States Senator for the “Sovereign State of Arkansas”. Fourteen thousand plus, 14,000+ registered voters signed a petition to put Trevor Drown on the ballot! Folks in Arkansas and throughout the nation are just fed up. When asked by a small group of fellow citizens why I was supporting the Independent Candidate, I replied: take a perfectly formed apple, perfect in color, roundness, taste etc., and allocate one half to the Democrat Party, and one half to the Republican Party. Then split the apple into two equal parts, Democrats to one side and Republicans to the other, and voila!!! They are both ROTTEN TO THE CORE!!! Professional politicians have said that the voters exercise term limits. Therefore there is no need for a law to set term limits. Really!!! How ‘bout that Mr. President or Governor ‘so & so’ or legislator ‘such & such’? It is total “Bull Feces”! Why, you may ask? It’s like this. There is a three-legged stool. One leg is “Big Business”. The second leg is “Big Government”, and the third leg is “Mainstream (or Lame Stream) Media”. This three-legged “Milking Stool” is placed under the “TAX COW”. As a result, the citizens of this republic get the worst government that money can buy, and are duped into thinking or believing otherwise, until the “TAX COW” goes dry! How many politicians do you know of that are experienced farmers, union members, veterans, or small business owners? How many pols do you know of who are, or come from a working background? How many pols do you know of who come from academia, or law school, or have only worked in government? How many pols do you know of who have family or comrades who reside at Arlington National Cemetery or any National Cemetery for that matter? How many pols do you know of who have been convicted of a crime, or are criminals, and kept their government jobs? Do you know any private citizens who fit either of the aforementioned categories, who are not in jail, and still have their jobs? I don’t. Rolling Thunder has become a major happening. For 23 years the demonstration has grown to become the largest one day motorcycle event on the planet, and still we have not been able to move the pols or our fellow citizens to resolve the POW/MIA issue. Why, you might ask? It is money, power, and CORRUPTION. Is there a cure? Yes there is! It is your vote! You are responsible for the mess that we are in, and only you can fix it. You need to register to vote, if you have not already done so. Then please evaluate your candidates who are running for office, and consider voting country over party. Whenever possible, if a veteran is running, combat or otherwise, and speaks “Vetranese”, please consider giving that candidate your vote. The only exception would be an incumbent who is a veteran with a poor voting record as that record pertains to veterans’ issues. Do you have a family member or friend who is deployed? Your vote may have a greater impact on that person’s well being, and that person’s ability to properly fulfill his or her mission. In the history of The United States of America 1,300,000+ men and women have paid the ultimate price while serving in the Armed Forces. Our military has been successful, to date. Your mission, if you choose to accept it citizen, is to join with me and vote for the nation this November 2nd, 2010. He answered his country’s call after 9/11. His family has a farm in Northwest Arkansas. It is a tree farm. She lived every day of her life with the anticipation that her son would walk through her door at any moment. She had no idea that the U.S. Government had written off her son, and at least 93,317 others - for the sake of the bottom line. Trevor knows, he is disgusted, and he is on a mission. Did anyone hear? Unfortunately, most of the members of Congress were out of town. The historical record indicates that they are all pretty much deaf, most especially the leadership, and care not about the Prisoner of War and Missing in Action issue. Think not? This is approximately 5 miles from the north end of Roosevelt Lake. This little place packs a lot of conveniences; a market for groceries, bait shop, gas, restaurant, hardware store, saloon w/ATM, RV park w/ full amenities; and it’s open 365 days of the year. Clouds and cooler temps mixed in with a high chance of rain led to a later departure time for me on Friday. Leaving between 12:30 -1pm, I took the long way around through Globe and around Roosevelt Lake. It was pretty breath-taking as EVERYTHING was in full bloom. On the backside of Four Peaks there was still snow! Arrived around 4pm @ Tonto Basin Hotel, unloaded, then headed to Butcher Hook. Saw Snakebite first thing with Hollie and the rest of the gang running the sign-in table and got signed in. Sign-in was $15 per person, which included the entrance to the party and FREE camping for both Friday and Saturday nights. The first 150 registered got a FREE shirt and run pin. The establishment provided the bar-b-que menu and the food is excellent. Food service was available both indoors and out. Bands for the weekend were Brotherhood of Blues featuring Sarah Styles on Friday, and Fools Life on Saturday; both featuring the best sounds in blues and classic rock and roll. It wasn’t long before the hay bales were catching up with me after much dancing the night away. I decided to call it a night and caught a shuttle back to my hotel. Norma, who is the owner of Butcher Hook, had this ‘designated-driver’ set up with the hotel down the way; for anyone that needed a lift to and from the event, helping you get safely there and back. I don’t ride at night so that was handy for me. Saturday morning was great and temps were warmer with clear skies. I threw a leg over my scoot and putted down to Butcher Hook for the day’s events. The adult games were just under way. They included some new ones that were fun to watch. Thanks also go to all the sponsors that provided for the event. After all the announcements it was time to party with the band, Fools Life. As with every event you don’t want it to end, but the time came to call it a night. The crowd that was there was enjoying the festivities. But unfortunately the turn-out this year was about half of what it was from last year’s. Attendance was possibly affected by AZ Bike Week being moved further into the month. The next morning I rode with friends and family to Kelly’s Saloon in Star Valley just east of Payson. Then back home before dark. Folks, mark this event on your calendar for next year, cuz it really is a lot of fun. Till next time-catch you next wind-be safe, happy and healthy. ~Sidekick ~ HOME AZ Rider Worldwide Motorcycle Awareness Ride This Awareness Ride took place on May 23, 2010. It was organized by John Fox of the Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group and the Phoenix M.C. Kruzers. Moved by the deaths and injuries to his friends of the PMRG and PMCK on the Carefree Highway on March 25, 2010, when an impaired driver plowed into their group; he felt that such a ride could be a way to help motorists become more aware of the motorcyclists sharing the road with them. Being a member of a number of online networking groups, word of this event he was putting together began to spread and the idea took off. By May 23, there were similar rides taking place on the same day in 4 countries and 35 cities. All of this came together in less than three weeks. More than 350 riders participated in the Phoenix event. Staging was in Mesa at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. We met up with our friend Painless and then with the group as it traveled up the freeway. The idea was for the group of riders to cover as many miles as possible and be seen by as many other vehicles as possible. A lot of the riders were wearing bright orange, green, or yellow ‘Can You See Me Now’ tee shirts. It was arranged with the online tee shirt vendor cafepress.com that they would make a donation to the Fallen Motorcycle Victims & Family Fund for each of these shirts they sell. This was an all freeway route of ≈ 120 miles. Loop 202 * Westbound I-10 * Northbound 101 west side * Eastbound 101, Tatum Blvd exit * Tatum to Dynamite * Dynamite to Alma School * ending at Greasewood Flat. At rides end, it was nice to meet some of the PMCK riders we’ve been reading about and emailing with … John Fox, Paul-T, and too many others to succeed at remembering everyone’s names. March 25, 2010 was a sorrowful day. Just thinking about it to type it here gives me a chill and brings tears to my eyes. We did not know any of the people lost or involved that day. But they are each part of our community, and we feel a loss every time a fellow biker is cut down by an irresponsible driver. And we online, click title for more photos 11 also know, as all motorcyclists do, that we take the risk of being in a similar situation each time we get in the saddle. This accident, like no other we know of, brought the attention of riders and non-riders alike to the issue of motorcycle awareness; and not just here in AriZona. If this horrible loss becomes the catalyst for increased motorcycle awareness by drivers then hopefully a little sense and something good may come from so much sadness. If the awareness events that took place this day help remind motorists to pay more attention to other vehicles around them, to wait until they’re parked to eat their lunch, to put on their makeup or read the newspaper, to hang up the damn cell phone, and to ignore any number of other distractions while driving, then they will have been a success. Known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon and a historical part of Route 66, the elevation is 6,766 feet and the air is cool and refreshing. The water signs (Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces) especially need to be extra alert to over heating. What would it be like for all 12 signs to take a road trip together and shop at the local gift stores? Aries: If you don’t like standing in line, you should have left earlier. Don’t count on others to be as efficient and quick as you are. But we know it won’t be you dragging your feet because you’re always first in first out. Patience is the word of the day in this group activity. Most Aries do quite well in the heat. Lucky Numbers 41, 22, 28, 6, 12, 8 Taurus: You know you’ve got to have that coon skin Davey Crockett cap, but “thrifty you” is not sure that you want to spring for the 9 bucks. Go ahead, make a spur of the moment decision for once and if you need any further motivation, think about how cool you’ll look riding home in it. Taurus “The Bull” does well in the heat as long as they drink enough water. Lucky Numbers 40, 56, 2, 21, 18, 7 Gemini: You don’t really walk into the gift store needing anything but good conversation. Always the social butterfly, you walk out of the store only after encouraging everyone to buy a little something and then comparing treasures. Gemini needs frequent breaks out of the sun. Lucky Numbers 14, 15, 9, 1, 49, 26 Cancer: Look out; your mood ring is flipping out again. It’s the heat! You, of all the signs love to shop - if you have the money, and are especially prone to buying things for the home. Take a look toward the back of the store for some outstanding prices on collector dolls for the little girl in your life. Don’t leave home without your cooling neck band. Lucky Numbers 25, 4, 7, 18, 57, 21 AZ Rider Leo: When the T-Shirt says One Size Fits All you don’t have to try them all on, unless of course you have an audience who will ooh and aah your stylish choices. With enough recognition you’ll be buying shirts for everyone! And hey, the hats are free with each shirt. Win/win! While Leo’s normally do very well in the sun and heat, it can make them sleepy, so stay alert. The world needs more lerts. Lucky Numbers 40, 25, 22, 6, 19, 11 Capricorn: We caught you sneaking a peek at the ‘for sale’ sign next door. Always the business man or woman, Capricorn cannot take a road trip without seeing business opportunities and dollar signs. By the time this road trip is over, you will own the business. I’ve never met a sturdy Capricorn yet who couldn’t outlast the sun. Lucky Numbers 44, 48, 25, 18, 42 Virgo: You bypass the scorpion jewelry as being disgusting & tacky, but don’t tell Scorpio. You do, however head straight for the bargain bin where you can get 2 of something you don’t want, for half the price. Life is good! As an earth sign you are one of the few who’d prefer cool & comfy to the extreme heat of Southern Arizona. Go north! Lucky Numbers 45, 28, 29, 1, 46, 17 Aquarius: You and Gemini cannot walk in to a gift store without holding verbal court. You love everybody, especially if they’ll teach you their foreign language. Lucky for you the the Addicted to Deals gift store in the town of Williams is absolutely filled with people from all over Europe. Don’t let your people-pleasing weakness make you stay quiet when you need to get out of the sun. Say something! Lucky Numbers 4, 27, 1, 18, 9, 3 Libra: While your friends are shopping you can’t help but straighten the gifts on the shelves because balance is everything to a Libra. You have now become BFF of the shop’s proprietor and while the sparkle doesn’t catch your eye, the items of great beauty do. When it comes to the heat, you and Virgo are also BFF. Lucky Numbers 25, 7, 19, 21, 12, 8 Scorpio: Don’t steal! There are security cameras all over the store and they’ll use it for your mug shot. OK, so now that I’ve pissed you off, here’s the truth: you are one excellent detective and if there’s any pilfering going on in the gift store, you’ll be the first to see it. Not wanting to admit weakness, you are the one most likely to succumb to heat stroke because you stubbornly pushed through your discomfort. Take a rest! Lucky Numbers 59, 3, 48, 22, 16, 2 Sagittarius: Not one to say “no,” you buy the store out if you can elbow Leo out of the way. Famous for your generosity, your friends love to go shopping with you. In fact, you and Leo will probably duke it out to give the most gifts. Remember, he who leaves the store with the most friends wins. Heat and Sag are old time friends. As an outdoors person, it rarely bothers you. Lucky Numbers 25, 45, 16, 38, 12 Pisces: Hey - what you thought was another aisle in the store turned out to be the bathroom and you spent the last of your money on air freshener. Ask shop keep for directions to the bus, since your buddies got tired of looking for you and went home. You, of all the signs, will become disoriented during times of extreme heat. Like the other susceptible signs, be sure and wear your cooling neck band this summer. Presented by the Pine/Strawberry Archaeological and Historical Society, this gathering gave a lot of people an opportunity to experience the Blues in a natural setting… away from the traditional clubs and nightlife. Strawberry is located ≈ 15 miles north of Payson. This event was held in conjunction with the annual Strawberry Festival in Pine, with everything taking place over the weekend of June 12 & 13. Pine & Strawberry are about 3 miles apart, along scenic Highway 87 - so traveling back and forth between activities makes a pleasant ride. Vendors included crafts booths, a variety of art, jewelry, temporary tattoos, and clothing & apparel – including our friend Dawn with her Biker Gurlz line. There was a climbing wall, a quilters’ show, and kids activities including pony rides & an inflatable bouncer. While there were numerous food purveyors with many options – the word of the weekend was of course… strawberries. {I’m good with that.} While browsing in Pine, you could enjoy music by select blues festival artists – offering an enticement to listeners to take a short trip up the road to the main stage. And the main stage had plenty to offer. The lineup included Big Pete Pearson, described as ‘the undisputed king of the Arizona blues scene’. Other performers covered the range from local favorites to internationally renowned; names such as Hans Olson, Scotty Spenner, Chuck Hall Band, John Scott Band, Jump Back Brothers, Barbara Kerr & FRIDAY and v-tour 13 RimShot, and the Blue FROGs. Aside from the John Scott Band, whom we’ve completely enjoyed at prior events, these performers were new to us. But now that we’ve heard them, we look forward to future opportunities. You can still hear some of these musicians this summer in the Rim Country. John Scott Band, Barbara Kerr & RimShot, and The Blue Frogs will be playing. Among the venues will be Sidewinders in Pine {928476-6434}, Sportsman Chalet in Strawberry {928-476-2411}, Buffalo Bar in Payson {928-474-3900}, & the Spur in Payson {928474-3414}. Call to find out who’s playing where & when. Thanks go to the event sponsors Nackard Distributors of Flagstaff, KRIM Payson – Rim Country FM, Home Depot, & Mazatzal Hotel & Casino in Payson for their support of Strawberry Valley Blues 2010. Thanks also to the Pine Strawberry Business Association, hosts of the annual Strawberry Festival, for arranging the in-town stage. Attendance was not what the organizers hoped for. But this is a new event, and that is not unusual. Plans for next year are already being worked on and what we’ve heard so far sounds great. As those arrangements come together, we’ll keep you posted. It’s something you won’t want to miss. FMI: 480-8940404 or www.chestershd.com {H} AZ Rider ABATE’s Spaghetti Feed East Valley ABATE’s Spaghetti Feed was held this year on Saturday June 5, at Mesa’s Tri-City Eagles, 2314 E. Apache Blvd in Tempe; from 69pm. This annual get-together is one we attend as often as we can. The camaraderie is heartwarming. Somewhat like a family reunion, it’s a welcome opportunity to see people whom we don’t get to that often. Among the attendees were Charity and her son Shea. Boy, is he growing fast! The food is always delicious, thanks to the culinary talents of Redbone. For $5 each, you get spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and garlic bread. And once again the dessert table was full of tempting treats. Leave hungry? Not likely. Jess Methods organized the activities for the kids. She also created the patriotic centerpieces for all the tables. She’s very talented and puts a lot of time and effort into this event. Michele from GyroTym had her gyroscope ride set up outdoors for people to take a spin. Hmmm… before dinner or after – that is the question {:o) Bob Taylor held the winning ticket to the 50/50, collecting $76. Congratulations! There were a variety of door prizes given away. Miss Too Broke For Sturgis 2009, JoAnne King was there. This annual ABATE fundraiser is an outstanding party put on by a group of people who know how to have fun. This year’s Too Broke For Sturgis Rally will be held July 23-25 at Mormon Lake Lodge. If you’ve never been, you really own it to yourself to make the trip. Other organizations attending the Spaghetti 15 Feed included American Legion Riders, Christian Motorcyclists Association, Loners MC, Modified Motorcycle Ass’n-AZ, and Mountain Motorcycle Ass’n of AZ. Thanks as always goes to Redbone and to the Bonettes for all the work that goes into preparing this tasty meal and for keeping things running smoothly along the food line. ABATE of AZ is a State Motorcycle Rights Organization {SMRO}, representing all of AriZona’s motorcyclists in regard to legislative issues. For more information, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit us on our website at www.ON-A-BIKE.com Many of the 29 West Virginia coal miners who died at the Upper Big Branch mining explosion on April 5th were veterans and some rode motorcycles, so bereaved families had requested the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the memorial service. PGR is an informal group of motorcyclists which exists to make sure that all veterans are given respectful funerals. But they were barred from attending this service by federal officials who labeled them a security threat. The appearance of the Patriot Guard Riders at the service, at the request of several families, had been cleared in advance by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, who is also a motorcycle rider. But the day before the service, Joe Cumblidge, the West Virginia State Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders e-mailed the men who were scheduled to participate: “Due to circumstances totally and completely beyond the control of the Patriot Guard Riders and Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia, we are regrettably ordering a STAND DOWN for this mission. Specific details will not be posted here but, we’ve been told we are not welcome to participate because of certain high-level dignitaries that are scheduled to be in attendance.” The “high-level dignitaries” were President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. A Patriot Guard Rider told WSAZ in Charleston that Manchin had been forbidden to allow them to participate “because of overwhelming security concerns with high-ranking federal officials -- it was just not logistically possible for them to be a part of the event.” Both Obama and Biden man- aged to escape West Virginia unharmed. *** from the editors… What an incredible slap in the face to our nation’s motorcyclists and veterans. Don’t the handlers of politicians realize that ‘unsavory’ folks like us VOTE? The use of security personnel and ‘handlers’ of course allows Obama & Biden to say ‘we didn’t AZ Rider Motorcycle News Got your own comment on this one? Hmmm... photo op for the P & VP vs the PGR truly and genuinely paying respects?
