Let’s take a break from the pitch for
once and concentrate on the ‘beautiful
game’ off it. Just recently we had the
self-proclaimed ‘Big Sam’ (just check
out the signage on his villa in Spain)
trying to earn an extra shekel, while
coining in £3m annually from the FA
as newly-appointed England manager.
The fact that Allardyce managed to last a
whole 90 minutes in the job tells me that the
rest of the candidates must have been dire at
best, or deceased at worst. To think that a few
old duffers from the FA sat around a table and
came to the conclusion that Big Sam was the
way forward is utterly laughable.
The last two jobs where BS has performed
satisfactorily were at Sunderland (keeping
a bunch of average players in an average
league) and back when my kids weren’t even
a twinkle at the bottom of a pint of Stella’s
eye at Bolton. That was sometime at the turn
of the last century.
I know, I know, hindsight is a wonderful
thing, but it didn’t take 20/20 vision to realise that with Big Sam at the helm, the job
wasn’t exactly in a safe pair of hands. Indeed
his hands were too busy grabbing, as the spy
camera embedded in a Telegraph journalist’s
bag showed.
Of course the incestuous old boys brigade of
ex-players, pundits, and journalists supported
the appointment as readily as football managers employ their own sons as agents.

(Did I just type that? I would never insinuate
that our beloved game has been corrupt for decades - or indeed ever)
So what’s the fallout from all this?
Obviously Big Sam lost his dream job, but
I’d happily lose my job after 90 something
minutes if you stick a million quid in my bank
account and send me packing to my Spanish
villa. (Of course, we are speaking hypothetically here, and hypothetically speaking my
palatial pile would not be called ‘Big Matt’s.’
The wife will tell you as much, to be honest).
Big Sam, on the other hand, does have some
HUGE cojones. I thought you’d need half of
BAE Systems to bring down a set of balls and
ego that large, but in the end his downfall was
procured by one investigative journalist’s tiny
piece of equipment in a hotel room.
My only concern now, apart from my receding
hairline and my expanding follicles in other
places, is that we’re going to have to listen
to Harry Redknapp gloating from high up on
his pedestal. But does anyone really think HE
was the answer? Even the hapless FA didn’t
appoint him when they had the chance, thinking Big Sam a safer bet. I reckon that tells you
all you need to know.
In other news away from the field of play,
Joey Barton’s latest controversy has brought
footballer gambling back to the fore.
Every single footballer knows they are not allowed to bet on football matches. It should be
a no-brainer, but does that stop all footballers
from gambling on football? Does it bollocks.

An extreme gambler

I guess the crux of this article is that football
has been of an incredibly spurious nature for
many a decade. I have no interest in getting
sued of course so I’m not naming names, but
I’m pretty familiar with some of the managers, agents and players who like to push the
boundaries and bend the rules. Do I have the

Will I elaborate on any of this?
One final rant on a similar topic. Unless you
absolutely need the money to pay the rent
or feed your kids, can all you whoring exfootballers who feel the need to associate
themselves with, and take money from bookies please f**k off. You are a stain on society and have no self-respect. Try using those

WINNING WENGER
BILL THOMAS
Two games into the season and,
with only one point from two
games, Arsenal were already
well out of the title race according to plenty of pundits who
should know better.
Six straight wins later and they sit joint top
with Manchester City who have just emulated Arsenal’s opening run with a defeat and
a draw in consecutive games. Yet nobody is
writing them off, nor suggesting that Arsenal
will win the league. Funny old game.
As far as Arsenal are concerned, that’s all to
the good. A couple of times in the last three
seasons, the Gunners have been looked upon
as title favourites and that has been a pressure
that has failed to sit well with them. Better
by far for Arsenal that the chatter continues
to be about Guardiola and Klopp, about Tottenham’s youth and Mourinho’s corruption of
Manchester United’s legacy.
What’s been interesting about Arsenal this
term, certainly during this current winning
streak, is that, the demolition of Chelsea
apart, for the most part they haven’t really approached their best for any length of time. But
where in the past, that would generally mean
the loss of points due to their charming, if infuriating human frailty that they persistently
embodied, this term they have got themselves
over the line and won the games they should.
He’s gone from failure to prospective England manager
– although that often tends to be the same thing
It’s been another odd season for Arsene
Wenger already. Written off after that opening
defeat to Liverpool, he’s gone from failure to
prospective England manager – although that
often tends to be the same thing – inside six
weeks and might yet be on his way to piloting
the Gunners to that elusive title.
Ne w York’s Finest English Tavern
Private party room available
Chelsea aside, they haven’t faced the most
taxing opposition in this recent run, but the
likes of Southampton and Swansea have inflicted damaging results in the past, while a
trip to Burnley is precisely the kind of occasion where they’ve stumbled in the past.
But this season, while they continue to produce football that is easier on the eye than
most, there’s a little bit more steel about the
Gunners and you start to wonder if the scars
of recent title challenges gone awry are now
going to be used positively, not as reminders
that they’re not good enough but as encouragement not to go through such disappointments again.
The run to the next international break will
be instructive as they host Middlesbrough
and travel to Sunderland. Nothing short of
six points will do from those, setting up the
derby with Tottenham at the Emirates before
the next break. Arsenal always seem to find
a way of getting past Spurs somehow and if
they could repeat that trick once again, surely
everyone would have to start taking their challenge seriously?

BIG NAMES NOT UNTOUCHABLE, EX-LEEDS GOALKEEPER
WARNS MOURINHO
GARY SPRAKE DIES
It takes an extraordinary goalkeeper to acquire legendary status while saddled with the nickname ‘Careless Hands’ but Gary
Sprake, who died on Wednesday
at the age of 71, was that man.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists he
will have no problem dropping Paul Pogba or Zlatan
Ibrahimovic.
Sprake played more than 500 times for
Leeds United across a decade which
proved the most glorious in the Yorkshire club’s history.
The big-name pair have underperformed of late, and came in
for criticism for their efforts in
the 0-0 draw against Liverpool
at Anfield on Monday that leaves
Mourinho’s side seventh in the
Premier League.
Pogba in particular has underwhelmed since his world record
£89million move from Juventus
over the summer, scoring just
once.
Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, hit the
ground running with five goals
in his first five games following
his free transfer over the summer, but has scored just once in
his last seven outings.
Mourinho claimed during his
first spell with Chelsea that
members of his team that
romped to back-to-back titles
were ‘untouchable’, but denied
that United players like Pogba
and Ibrahimovic fell into the
same category.
He was in goal when Don Revie led
them from the second tier in 1964 and
when they won the title for the first
time, five years later.
‘That was 11 years ago,’ he said.
‘Different Premier League, different situation, the best team by
far, that is a different story. Not
untouchable.
‘Untouchable in our team has to
be the spirit and commitment,
the pride, the commitment to the
club, respect to the fans. That
has to be untouchable, not players.’
Although Ibrahimovic has seen
his form drop off in recent
weeks, the Swede’s influence is
still being felt off the pitch according to Mourinho.
‘I am really happy. He is giving
us exactly what we need from
him, what we expect from him,’
the former Chelsea boss said.
‘He is quite beautiful for me to
meet him five or six years later
and to find the same, professionalism, ambition, desire to play,
desire to compete. I couldn’t be
happier. He is really fit, he is always ready to play. I couldn’t be
happier with his influence in the
dressing room. The young guys
look at him and what they see is
great for them.’
He won the Fairs Cup twice and the
League Cup and is remembered as a
strong, agile and athletic keeper, capable of eye-catching reflex saves. Yet
his place in football folklore has come
to be associated more with his highprofile errors, many of them captured
by TV cameras in an era when televised
football was rare.
Revie’s Leeds would not have achieved
all they did with a clown in goal. Sprake
was a gifted goalkeeper with the mental strength to block the errors from his
mind. He won 37 caps for Wales and
went on to join Birmingham City before
retiring with back trouble in 1975.
His relationship with Leeds soured
when he later became the central figure in match- fixing allegations against
Revie, making claims to a newspaper
which he did not repeat under oath in
court.
He was not welcome at Elland Road for
many years and ended his friendships
with many former team-mates who remained close even after their playing
days had ended.
News of his death was greeted with sadness and Leeds will mark the occasion
with applause before the EFL Cup tie
against Norwich on Tuesday.

DOMINANT JUVENTUS
PREPARE TO TAKE ON AC MILAN
MICHAEL OTTOLENGHI
a winning formula, and go
into the game joint second
(with Roma) in the table, five
points behind Juve.
Will the latest rival to Juventus be able
to challenge the defending champions
for the title? Unlikely, but an equally
unlikely second placed Milan will host
Juve at San Siro on Saturday, in a
matchup that evokes classic title battles
of the 1990s. Milan-Juve is undoubtedly the key game of this weekend’s Serie A games, which will also feature the
first derby della lanterna of the season,
Genoa hosting Sampdoria at Marassi
stadium.
Juve go into the weekend looking dominant.
They lead the table by 5 points after only 8
games, and have won all of those games except their surprise 2-1 loss away at Inter. They
have yet again absorbed key losses and integrated new players into their starting lineup,
from Mehdi Benatia in defence to Gonzalo
Higuain up front. By contrast, few expected
Milan to be this high in the table under yet
another new manager and with such meagre
spending over the summer. But under Vincenzo Montella Milan seem to have hit on
Whether by design or necessity, Montella’s success has
been built on revitalising
players who were mainly already on the books at Milan.
Teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, midfielder
Manuel Locatelli and striker
M’Baye Niang represent the
youthful spine of the team, and it is true that
Milan have the youngest squad in the division. But Montella has also worked wonders
with older players such as centre-back Gabriel
Palletta, who ended last season as the fourth
choice in his position, and full back Mattia De
Sciglio, no longer a youngster at 23. Montella’s 4-3-3 formation has allowed his players to
express themselves, but he has clearly also injected both freedom and self-confidence, and
perhaps a more relaxed atmosphere compared
with that of his authoritarian predecessor,
Sinisa Mihajlovic. His free running forwards,
lead by Niang and Carlos Bacca, may pose
problems for Juve’s defense, and an early goal
could ignite San Siro and make Juve work for
their points.
Before focusing on the derby della lanterna, it
is worth looking at the chaos that has engulfed
the blue and black side of Milan, because it
has shown that the ugly violent side of Italian football has not gone away. Unlike Milan,
Frank De Boer’s Inter have underperformed
so far this season, with 5 defeats in the manager’s 10 games in all competitions, includ-
ing 3 Serie A losses in 8 games, all of them
at home. The latest defeat came last Sunday
against Cagliari, who came from a goal down
to beat Inter 2-1 at San Siro.
But events off the pitch have been even worse,
with an angry confrontation between captain
Mauro Icardi and Inter’s ultras threatening to
descend into violence. The farcical cause of
the incident was a description of a previous
confrontation between Icardi and the ultras in
the Inter captain’s autobiography. It caused a
furore at San Siro last weekend, with the ultras
booing their captain, the rest of the stadium
booing the ultras, and Icardi and the ultras
threatening violence against each other. Icardi
missed a penalty in the Cagliari game, and
afterwards ultras turned up outside his house
to intimidate him. No word from Inter’s new
Chinese owners, but they are unlikely to have
been impressed by the spectacle offered both
on and off the pitch.
Ultras have an important role in Genoa as
well, and the derby della lanterna is usually
a fiery affair. This game will see a Genoa side
hampered by a poor disciplinary record (they
have finished with fewer than 11 men in their
past 3 games), but buoyed by the form of
Women’s Friendly
2PM USA v Switzerland
young striker Giovanni Simeone, son of current Atletico Madrid manager Diego. They
have collected 12 points so far, four more than
Sampdoria, who go into the game with early
question marks surrounding manager Marco
Giampaolo, who has managed just two victories this season. With mid-table safety the best
either squad can realistically aim for this season, a derby win would lift the fans and maybe
save Giampaolo’s job.

ONE SEMI-FINAL MATCH DETERMINED,
THE COSMOS AWAIT THEIR OPPONENTS

by Luis Hernandez
With the New York Cosmos and Indy
Eleven already determined as the hosts of
the semifinal round of the NASL Championship, the league now waits to see
who their opponents will be, although
one match-up is certain.
FC Edmonton sit in second-place in the overall
table. Indy may be third in the table but, regardless, the Eleven keep the #2 seed after they took
the Spring season on the third tie-breaker with
the Cosmos after the two clubs finished even on
points. Edmonton holds a nine-point lead over
their closest contenders, Minnesota United and
Rayo OKC. However, with only two games remaining for all three clubs, Edmonton is guaranteed a #3 seed.
Indy Eleven will host FC Edmonton in an afternoon match playing at 3pm on Saturday, November 5th at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
The New York Cosmos will host an opponent
to be determined at 7pm on the same day at Shuart Stadium.
The race for fourth place and a showdown with
the New York Cosmos continues. Multiple contenders are still challenging for the final spot in
a race which could very well go down to the final matches of the season. Presented in order of
their current positions in the table are:
The Contenders
Minnesota United currently sit in fourth with
41 points after 30 games, holding their spot
through the merit of their goal differential, currently a +6. They’ll travel to Carolina, then host
the Cosmos
Rayo OKC sit in fifth, tied with United on 41
points after 30 games. Their goal differential is
at +3. They travel to the Strikers, then host Indy.
Tampa Bay Rowdies are in sixth with 38 points,
but have a game in hand, having played only 29
matches. They have a +1 goal differential with
matches to be played against Indy and Ottawa
before closing out their season (NASL career?)
in Jacksonville.
Ft. Lauderdale Strikers are in seventh-place,
also with 38 points after 30 games played, but
could be affected by their -8 goal differential.
Their final two matches will be hosting Rayo
and then traveling to Ottawa.
Miami FC are still in the race despite being in
eighth, with 37 points after 29 matches played
and a goal differential at 0. They travel to the
Armada and then New York before hosting Edmonton.
Carolina RailHawks, in ninth place, are the final contender. With 37 points after 30 matches,
they will host Minnesota before traveling to
Puerto Rico FC.

While the two midweek matches won’t eliminate anyone, they could vault the Rowdies into
a three-way tie with Minnesota and Rayo and
leave Miami poised in a position to make a late
run
Next weekend, however, there could be some
tears around the league as that pool could get
smaller.

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH RENAME
THEMSELVES ‘A GERMAN TEAM’
Borussia Monchengladbach have arguably the most difficult team name
to spell in world football - a fact that
wasn’t lost on the surprisingly self
deprecating Germans ahead of their
Champions League clash at Celtic.
After sharing a picture of the pub sign, the
Bundesliga club showed their sense of humour by also changing their Twitter account
name to ‘A German Team’ in what can only
be described as a moment of social media genius.
Reacting to a pub sign in Glasgow advertising
Wednesday’s game, but with trouble spelling
the visitor’s name - leading to several efforts
crossed out before settling on ‘A German
Team’ - Monchengladbach responded in the
best possible way.

‘As bad as Toure’s play was on Wednesday,
there’s plenty of blame to go around’
BRIAN P. DUNLEAVY
When Celtic manager Brendan
Rodgers signed Kolo Touré during the summer transfer window,
he sought to shore up the Hoops’
central defense—an Achilles’ heel
for the side under his predecessor
Ronny Deila, and a bit of a revolving door in 2015-16 as well.
And, by and large, the Ivorian has done just
what the doctor—or at least Rodgers—ordered, bringing steady, composed play and
leadership to a side that often seemed to lack
the necessary toughness to succeed on the
Celtic big stage. Rodgers was familiar with
Touré from the time that both men spent at
Liverpool, and he knew what he was getting.
Both the good, and the bad.
E
But as bad as Touré’s play was on Wednesday,
there’s plenty of blame to go around. Nir Bitton was nothing short of abysmal in the center of the park, beaten for pace and acumen
And so it’s clear, more work needs
to be done to prepare this Celtic
side for another run at European
glory, which these days amounts
to reaching the knockout stages of either the
Champions’ League or Europa League (yes,
it’s come to that). In the nearer term, Rodgers will have a lot to do in bolstering his players’ confidence in advance of the League Cup
semi-final against Rangers on Sunday.
Because supporters may be willing to forgive
the slip-up—from the team and from Touré—
on the European stage, but they won’t be so
kind should the side lose out to their hated
rivals on another chance to reach a domestic
cup final. We all know how that worked out
for Deila.

Was Touré channeling his inner Efe Ambrose?
No. As solid a professional as he has been in
his long career at the top of world football,
Touré is no stranger to the yips. A ghastly
howler against West Brom in February 2014,
back when the central defender played for
Rodgers at Liverpool, resulted in two dropped
points for the Reds in a season that ended with
them narrowly missing out on the EPL title.
We imagine the Scousers haven’t forgotten
that one, just like Hoops supporters won’t
soon forget this more recent performance.
throughout his time on the pitch before he was mercifully yanked for
a substitute. Scott Sinclair missed
a nice opportunity in the first half,
and a simple header in the second,
both of which would have given
Celtic the first goal of the match
had he converted. He was otherwise invisible. And James Forrest
was willing for sure, but hardly
able to use his pace to good effect.
U
T
Sadly, some of the latter was on display on
Wednesday, when Touré effectively set up
both Borussia Monchengladbach goals in the
second half to seal the Hoops’ fate on the
night—they, of course, lost 2-0—and likely
in European competition for the season. It
seems virtually impossible that Rodgers’ side
will be able to do enough to finish in second
(ha!) or even third, the latter of which could
put them into the far-less-glamorous Europa
League.

THE CSL
WEEKLY
ROUND-UP
With Jay Mwamba
Sapountzis saw his potential
equalizer come off the cross
bar.
BAH NONE
Ibrahima Bah was on target for
Manhattan Celtic in a 1-1 regulation time draw with Port Jeff
that the CSL side parlayed into
a 4-2 penalty victory to reach
the quarterfinals.
Two other CSL sides,
seven-time
Manning
Cup champs Pancyprian
Freedoms and Shamrock, advanced to the last
eight without kicking
a ball. Their respective
opponents, the LISFL’s
Kew Forest and Port Jeff
Fusion, both forfeited.
A surprise package in last season’s competition, Lansdowne
Bhoys bowed out of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup second
round qualifiers 3-2 to FC Motown Celtics in Bridgewater, N.J.,
last Sunday.
The three-time CSL champs lost a
heart-breaker at the Torpey Athletic
Complex erasing a two-goal deficit
with two minutes to spare only to concede a goal with the last play.
Motown, a semi-pro side from the
Garden State Soccer League’s Super
Division, struck twice inside 30 minutes through Dritan Sela and Max
Garcia.
Lansdowne pulled one back before the
interval when Colin Murphy blasted in
a Karim Russell cross.
On resumption, the relentless Bhoys
had a Daryl Kavanagh goal waved off
by the referee and several other close
chances before Russell leveled from
the spot in the 88th minute.
But the tie would take a cruel turn
for Lansdowne, who ousted professional club Pittsburgh Riverhounds en
route to the U.S. Open Cup third round
proper last season.
“Just as it seemed destined for extra
time, Motown were awarded a soft
free kick on the right wing. They
drove the [ball] across the six-yard
box and headed home at the back post
-- game over,” rued Lansdowne president William McGrory. Andres Berriel
was the Motown scorer.
“A hard one to swallow, but plenty left
to play for with a massive game [this]
Saturday night against Shamrock,”
added McGrory, alluding to the Bhoys’
top-of-the-table CSL Irish derby clash
with the First Division leaders.
Lansdowne came from behind to
edge Pancyprian Freedoms 3-2 in extra time in the Open Cup first round
qualifiers last month.
Motown, meanwhile, had a forfeit win
over four-time US Open Cup winners
New York Greek Americans in the first
round.
MANNING CUP
Four-goal hero Paul Nittoli keyed a
6-0 Cedar Stars Academy rout over the
LISFL’s Serbia that put the holders in
the quarterfinals of the Manning Cup.
Phil Bannister and Josue Ortiz were
the other scorers. Cedar Stars, who
beat Port Jefferson 2-0 in last season’s
final, meet the NYGA-Forest Park
winner in the last eight.
GREEK-FEST
Adam Marcu [two], Elliot Firth, Patrick Figureido and Gustavo Riego
tallied in New York Greek Americans’ 5-1 Round of 16 drubbing of
NY Irish Rovers at the Metropolitan
Oval. Forest Park [LISFL] edged the
CSL’s Doxa 2-1. Mixalis Dramountanis scored for the latter, whose Kosta
NYAC WIN
Elsewhere,
NYAC
pipped Glen Cove Avellino 1-0 in a
preliminary round tie. They face East
Hampton next in the Round of 16 after
the Long Islanders’ 1-0 defeat of Zum
Schneider.
In the Polish derby at McCarren Park,
NY Polet of the LISFL came away
with a 5-3 win.
SUPER RANGERS
Central Park Rangers’ two entrants in
the Flamhaft Cup were in stellar form
against Long Island opposition, banging in 14 goals between them while
conceding just two, en route to the
Round of 16.
The Reds demolished OB Park 11-2
away with Timur Mone netting four
times. Andrew Fisher [two], Mack
Woodruff [two], Brad Janes [two] and
Donal O’Cofaigh got the other goals.
The Whites, meanwhile, blanked
Olympiacos NY 3-0, thanks to an own
goal and strikes by Lasse Kokko and
Mouni Kabore.
SEVEN STALS
Stal Mielec were the other big winners
in the Flamhaft Cup with a 7-1 romp
over South Jamaica Port on the road.
Bartek Dziuban, Kevin Romero and
Jacek Lawniczak each had a brace.
Lukasz Hausner had the other goal.
Stal, from the CSL second tier, meet
another LISFL side, Black Eagles, in
the Round of 16. Eagles dispatched
the CSL’s Brishna 4-1.
STRONG START
Tommy Herlihy [two], Brian Morris, Thinus Nygaard and Albi Rexha
starred in Flamhaft champs Manhattan Kickers’ 5-1 thrashing of EDSL
envoys Capo Verde at East River Park.
Next up for Cup holders are Farmingville Port who edged NY Ittihad
2-1.
“They scored the equalizer in the 70th
minute,” noted David Lago. “FDNY
had numerous chances to tie but our
goalie Augie Shkreli made a few great
saves. We had a chance to win it in the
92nd minute off an Andrew Rodriguez
header that their keeper miraculously
got a hand on.”
Also in the Flamhaft Cup, Romaine
Watson had both Panatha goals in a
2-2 regulation tie with Ossining Port.
The CSL club, however, succumbed
4-2 on penalties.
CHRIS SPECIAL
Chris Burns celebrated the birth of his
son with a first half scorcher for Shamrock reserves that set up a 6-5 penalty
victory over last season’s D’Arpino
Cup losing finalists New York Greek
Americans. The full back’s rocket
[30th] tied the game 1-1 on Randalls
Island. The Rocks got another dramatic goal from another defender, debuting center back Conall McGrandles, to
draw level once more [85th] and force
penalties.
Darren Coleman, Joey Aronovsky,
McGrandles, George Lara, Mike
Stone and skipper Paul McDaid converted their shots before Jesse Corke
saved the Greeks’ sixth PK.
“I’m very proud of the way the lads
never gave up,” said coach John Riordan. “The Greeks love the State Cup
and were losing finalists in June so
they came to play. But we responded
well and kept our cool in the shootout.”
Riordan’s next hurdle is another
Hellenic side, Pancyprian ‘B,’ in the
Round of 16. The Greek-Cypriots
squeaked past NY Irish Rovers reserves 4-2 on PKs after a 1-1 tie.
NYAC WIN II
NYAC’s reserves breezed past Sporting Astoria ‘B’ 6-0 to secure a Round
16 D’Arpino date with the Port Jeff
seconds.
“Astoria has some very good players,
and their team played hard, but they
just weren’t deep enough,” reported
NYAC boss Bill Saporito. “Dav Blum
opened the scoring off a beautiful pass
from Chris Barsky about 30 minutes in
after we unlocked their offside trap.”
Alex Deckert got the second before
the break, prompting Saporito to say:
“We knew the next goal would decide
the match.”
Astoria applied tremendous pressure
early in the second half but Chris
Sutherland made it 3-0 on the counter.
NYAC then sealed it with a fourth by
Brian Kuritzky and Steve Whitaker’s
double.
New York Ukrainians a Round of 16
tie with Real NYFC at Manhattan
Kickers’ expense.
Vahe Sargsyan had the Homenetmen
face-saver in a 5-1 drubbing by Kosmos United.
CHRISTIAN SCHWARTZ
CD Iberia had a Christian Schwartz
goal in a 1-1 draw with NY Ittihad 1-1
that the Spaniards went on to win 3-0
in a shootout.
Iberia collide with NY Polet in the
next round after the LISFL side’s 3-2
defeat of Beyond FC. Bradley Ferrada
and Karl Verna connected for Beyond.
Joining the CSL contingent in the
D’Arpino Cup Round of 16 are Manhattan Celtic reserves, following a 2-1
result over Port Jeff. Victor Alobeidy
and Daniel Deychakiwsky scored.
And Mola SC went down 5-3 to New
York Croatia despite goals by Akiem
Williams, Stefano Ingravallo and
Chris Discipio.
MARK SIX
In the Strumpf Cup, Mark Gallagher
reeled in a weekend high six goals as
Williamsburg International mauled
fellow CSL side SS Lazio 11-2. John
Kaddo, Andreas Moudatsos [two],
Kevin Ruppel and Zach Mikolenko
accounted for the other goals.
MISSILE FORCE
Williamsburg II bowed out 3-0 to Missile FC whose Eddy Previl, Lens Alexis and Jeff Louisme were on target.
DOUBLE ACT
Ergi Janku and Aladji Kourouma
both struck twice in NYFC IIria’s
7-0 Strumpf Cup trouncing of NYDC
Boldest [LISFL]. Bledi Kovaci, Klod
Mele and Van Mehmeti were the other
marksmen.
In the Round of 16, IIria play the
Ridgewood-Korabi winner. While
the former had a bye, Korabi evicted
Dana P. Dimon’s Gotham Argo 3-1 in
dramatic fashion on goals by Zekail
Gazafer [two] and Gledis Nuza.
“Ahh, it was so sad!” lamented Dimon. “Two-zero to Korabi end of first
half. Re-strategized at halftime; came
back 2-2 and then they scored one in
the last two minutes of the game. We
definitely would have won in PKs.”
Federico Testi got both Gotham
goals on rebounds from shots by Nick
“Pugs” Pugliese and Eric “Gonzo”
Goncalves, respectively.
BHOYS Vs FLUSHING
Brady, Richard Hartnett and Oswaldo
Valencia fired Lansdowne Bhoys 3-1
past the LISFL’s Asteras GCC and into
a Round of 16 encounter with Flushing
FC. Flushing edged SC Eintracht 2-1
at Flushing Meadows Park on Chris
Hain Prada’s 88th minute header from
Samory Mullings’ assist off a corner.
Winger Leo Coppola [50th] had the
hosts ahead and Eintracht needed two
bites of the cherry before Artur Galstian equalized [77th].
PK SPECIALISTS
Deepak Mangwani, Nick Nebot, Veprim Gashi and Sherief El-Helaifi were
on target in Beyond FC’s 4-2 penalty
defeat of FSC College Point after a
goalless tie.
Port Jeff were equally emphatic winners, thrashing short-handed Doxa
‘B’ 7-1. Said Doxa’s Foti Bouklis:
“Our players were unable to make it
one hour out to Port Jefferson and we
played with nine men.”
GREAT DENNS
Mr. Dennehy’s will face rookie CSL
side Richmond County in the Round
of 16 after seeing off NYC Afghanistan 3-1. Francisco Correa, Jimmy
Kuo and Filipe Lobato delivered for
Dennehy’s. Richmond, meanwhile,
forked out Barnstonworth Rovers 7-4.
NY Ukrainians outlasted Westchester
FC of the EDSL 7-6 following a 2-2
tie on the road. Lukasz Prawdzik
[10th] and Gamil Aljalal [20th] scored
in regulation time for the CSL side.
Still, Doxa made a fight of it, with
Doug McKim reducing a 2-0 deficit at
one point.
“Fatigue kicked in and we went down
5-1. Doug McKim had a goal called
off for a close offside,” summed up
Bouklis.
SILVA GOAL
Brandon Silva notched the only goal of
the match in BW Gottschee’s Strumpf
Cup showdown with Shamrock 1960.
It was Gottschee’s second win over the
Irishmen in the cup, having beat them
on penalties last year.
RANGERS ENCORE
There was a CPR one-two in the
D’Arpino Cup as well with the White
and Red second units both triumphant.
“The game was close with the score
0-0 at the half, in large part because
of three fine saves by Brandon Silva,”
said Gottschee’s John Ryding. “Brandon also proved to be the difference
in the second half when he smashed
home a ball in the box.”
FC Spring Valley also kept their nerve
from the spot against another EDSL
club, Yonkers Ukrainians to triumph
8-7 on penalties. Saul Ramirez connected for the CSL representatives in
the 1-1 regulation tie.
“We survived and move on in our first
year in the Flamhaft Cup after winning
the Strumpf Cup in 2015 and 2016,”
said Juan Ramirez.
BURNT
Marcello Russo’s 35th minute penalty
for CD Iberia was canceled out late by
FDNY FSC who went to win the ensuing shoot-out 4-3.
Carlo Zanetti had the solitary goal as
the Whites, 2012 cup winners, saw off
City International 1-0 to book a Round
of 16 tie with Panatha. The Reds, for
their part, had goals from Emilio and
Dutch debutant Tom, in a 2-1 Round
of 24 win over Forest Park.
UKRAINIANS PREVAIL
A 2-0 result, thanks to Adnan Zaganjor
[45] and Joshua Fischer [78], earned
HARD LUCK
In Strumpf Cup hard luck stories for
CSL teams, Beyond FC’s Sam Golzan
[two] and Adrian Alexandru [pen.]
connected in a 3-3 tie with AO Brooklyn that went to penalties. The Jersey
men succumbed 5-3 in the shoot-out.
ROCK SOLID
Holders Shamrock steamrolled Garden City 5-1 on Randalls Island at
the start of their Fritz Marth Over-30
State Cup defense. The first CSL club
ever to win the competition, Shamrock
went for the jugular against the Long
Islanders. Alex Berne, Sean Riley
[two], Tayfun Gokmen and Johnny
McGeeney connected.
“We played some very good football,”
said coach Paddy Mc Carry. “When
the three boys up top - Johnny, Riley
and Tayfun - are on form, they are hard
to handle for any team.”
Shamrock Legends, the Queens club’s
other envoys in the State competition,
rallied back twice to beat Oceanside
4-2 on the road. Karol Hughes [two],
John Riordan and captain Richie
Brennan scored.
IRISH POWER
A third Irish side, Lansdowne Bhoys,
evicted Barnstonworth Old Boys 4-2
on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Tibbetts Brook Park.
The Bhoys’ Brendan Hansbury had his
early strike canceled out late [80th].
When it went to penalties, the Bhoys
made all their shots while stand-in
goalie Shane Moore pulled off two excellent saves.
DEADLY NEDGY
Dangerman Nedgy Nazon drilled in
four goals and Richard Purger three at
Bush Terminal where Cozmoz held off
Pancyprian Freedoms 7-5. Pancyprian
veteran Taso Polydefkis replied with
a hat trick of his own while Anastasis
Stylianou and William Hall added one
apiece.
“Hockey score,” joked Taso.
HELLENIC HOPES
At Flushing Meadows, Greek Americans kept Hellenic hopes alive in the
Marth Cup with a 2-1 win over NY
Finess. Tom Bouklis and Walter Matiz
scored.
ORANGE HERO
Ronnie Swinkels’ goal lifted CSL
rookies CPR Orange past LI Gaels
1-0.
Three other CPR teams went out of the
Marth Cup.
The Grays had an own goal in a 3-1
defeat to SC Gjoa; Dan Hollins netted
for Old Boys in a 1-1 draw with Istria,
but the LISFL campaigners aced the
shootout; and Legends were shutout
6-0 by Polonez.
KICKER WOES
Manhattan Kickers also had their
Marth Cup issues with both the Premier and Legends losing narrowly.
Alex Petrovic scored for a Kickers Premier side that battled bravely
against Port Jefferson with just nine
players having made the trip. They
dropped a 2-1 decision.
The Kicker Legends also lost 2-1 to
Glen Cove Avellino after taking the
lead through center back Michael
Schall’s first half header.
“Unfortunately our Over-37 bodies
could not keep up with the under-37s
and we coughed up two [goals] in second half,” remarked Eddie Yee Woo
Guo.

5 – How many FA Cups did
Patrick Viera win with Arsenal?
ANSWERS ON PAGE 24
For some the math is already done and they
know what the future will hold for them once
game 34 comes and goes on Sunday. Others are
grinding their pencils into graphite dust working
to figure out every angle, every permutation that
gets them the Supporters’ Shield, a first round
bye, a home game, or in to the MLS playoffs
at all.
Simultaneously it is now also time to give some
serious thought to the battle for individual
awards. In terms of the ones based on statistics,
Sacha Kljestan will, barring the game of a lifetime from Toronto’s Giovinco, bring the title of
the league’s top distributor home for the New
York Red Bulls, while the man Kljestan most
often sets up – Bradley Wright-Phillips - goes
in to the final round with a one goal lead over
David Villa in the Golden Boot race.
There is comfort in stone-cold numbers like that.
It is clean and bloodless and for the most part
beyond question (“what actually qualifies as an
assist?” aside).
But then come the more ethereal, slippery
awards, such as Rookie of the Year or, most
importantly, the league’s Most Valuable Player
award.
The problems with a “most valuable” player
award are numerous and complex. To summarize, to name an MVP is to choose between voting for what that award should represent – the
best player of the year – and what it manifestly
states that it is – a player who has given his team
the greatest value. And how exactly do we assign value to a player? When you bring up a
word like “value” it immediately conjures up the
concept of numbers and formulas. And to entertain such notions in sports, especially this one, is
as much a fool’s paradise as that of a nerd.
We understand as fans that those top line stats –
goals, assists, saves, etc. – do not and cannot tell
the entirety of a player’s contribution to a game
and to a team. How best, then, to determine the
value of a defender who blocks shots and causes
turnovers? To potentially mollify that complaint,
MLS promoted a link on Monday to some of the
more deep-dive statistics, the sort of numbers
where, were they anything more
complex, you would be required by
law to wear a lab coat to view them.
But it’s here, in the soccer sabermetrics, where the numbers fail us in a
different way. If the big numbers
like goals and saves that flesh out
the box scores tell us too little about
a game, the more in-depth technical
numbers perhaps tell us more than
we would want to know, tell us that
the game maybe isn’t supposed to be
pared down to the subatomic level.
Consider the category “Big Chances
Created”, where a player should
reasonably be expected to score, accounting for situations like one-onones with the keeper, breakaways,
close-range efforts, and the like. For
week 33, Mauro Diaz of Dallas led
the league in this stat with a whopping two, while second place and
hot on his heels were thirteen different players all tied at one. That’s
not enough separation to vote Mauro Diaz as the
Man of the Match, let alone anything else. The
league leader for the season in the Big Chances
Created category is Giovinco with 16, but again,
any stat that happens for a very good player on
average once every other game seems more of
an outlier than a bellwether.

FOOTBALL ON THE WEST SIDE
One of the formerly nerdy metrics that has
wandered out of the laboratory and found
widespread favor in other sports is the plus/
minus, which is the points/goals/runs scored
for a team minus those scored against the team
while Player X is actually playing. This works
in sports like basketball and hockey because
players are rotating in and out frequently, and
there are dozens if not hundreds of shots taken,
which allows for the numbers to statistically
smooth out the graph. It is this that prevents
plus/minus from being used because, sorry to
say, there isn’t enough scoring in soccer. The
number of legitimate scoring opportunities is
so low in any game that it creates stats way
out of balance with what your own eyes will
tell you is true. Also, any plus/minus stat line
would have to mushroom out and be adjusted
for things like red cards and position; by the
end the whole thing would be so bloated that it
would be better to start from scratch and make
your own formula.
So how do we calculate “value”? Well, we
can start with the way we all instinctively
want to calculate value: money. Let’s look
back at the Golden Boot race, and assume
63 CARMINE ST. NYC
for the sake of argument that David Villa
and Bradley Wright-Phillips end up level on
goals after the final game is played. But Villa’s salary is about nine times that of BWP’s,
so clearly the Englishman is more valuable.
But that calculation has to continue all the
way down the line, so that a player with half
as many goals as Wright-Phillips but makes
half as much as BWP is equally as valuable.
And actually there is a player nearly there in
Philadelphia’s Chris Pontius (23 goals vs. 12,
$650,000 vs. $380,000). But since Pontius’s
low salary allows Philadelphia to sign other
quality players under the salary cap and since
he is an American, perhaps his value is even
higher than BWP’s? And we’re only factoring
goals scored, what about assists and saves and
interceptions and, (sure, why not, while we’re
at it) Big Chances Created? Once you plug all
of these numbers into a big formula, the player
that comes out the other end is…
Whoever you want. Anyone with eyes knows
Chris Pontius is a lot of things but he isn’t
the league’s most valuable player. That’s the
problem with trying to assess value: so long
as you are the one making the equation, you
47 5th Ave. Park Slope
212 414 1223
WWW.MRDENNEHYS.COM
can make the result say whatever you want.
Your favorite player? Some unsung journeyman you’ve chosen to champion? Marketable
player who will sell merchandise? Up to the
mathematician.
So let’s do away with this notion of a most
valuable player award and admit that what we
really want here is a Player of the Year. Yes,
we would probably still be having the same
arguments, but at least we wouldn’t come into
these arguments under the pretense that they
are based on science and math, and that we’ve
just run from the lab with the results.
Science and math just don’t work in football,
at least not yet. That’s no reason to be antiintellectual; if the nerds catch up and make
the perfect formula, they should be celebrated.
Until then, however, the sport remains as it
ever was, in our hearts and in our guts. Trust
what you feel, and believe what you think to
be true.

NYCFC FALL 3-1 TO DC UNITED
David Villa scored his 22nd goal of the
season, but New York City FC couldn’t
climb out of a three-goal halftime deficit and fell to D.C. United, 3-1, in the
penultimate game of the regular season
Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium.
Tommy McNamara played Villa into the box
on a quick touch and Taylor Kemp tripped the
NYCFC captain. Villa put his penalty to the
left of D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid,
who dove the other way.
Patrick Mullins scored against his former
squad when he knocked in a cross from Lloyd
Sam at the back post in the 27th minute.
Bobby Boswell then latched onto a Sam corner kick and headed in from the edge of the
six-yard box to double D.C. United’s lead four
minutes later.
Rob Vincent made it 3-0 just before the stroke
of halftime, capitalizing on a defensive miscue.
How They Lined Up …
Patrick Vieira made one change from the
squad that defeated the Houston Dynamo, 2-0,
in their last league match with Jason Hernandez slotting in for injured RJ Allen on the right
side of the four-man backline.
Diego Martinez came on at halftime for Ronald Matarrita, who left the match injured late
in the first half. Steven Mendoza came on for
Khiry Shelton for Vieira’s second substitution
in the 56th minute.
Tony Taylor replaced Tommy McNamara for
NYCFC’s final change in the 78th minute.

BOB DYLAN HAS NOT OFFICIALLY
RESPONDED TO HIS NOBEL PRIZE WIN
FRANZ FERDINAND SHARE
ANTI-DONALD TRUMP SONG DEMAGOGUE
Bob Dylan has not officially responded to his Nobel Prize win, and
may not turn up to the ceremony in
Sweden to collect his award.
Franz Ferdinand have given
their damning verdict on Donald Trump’s 2016 US Presidential campaign.
Dylan gave no reference to his Nobel
Prize in Literature triumph while performing live last week, and it seems
the Academy’s permanent secretary
Sara Danius is being met with equally
stony silence.
Their thoughts are encapsulated
on Demagogue, a part of the 30
Days, 30 Songs project in which
similarly anti-Trump messages
are being articulated through a
different song each day.
“Right now we are doing nothing,” she told
state radio SR (via The Guardian). “I have
called and sent emails to his closest collaborator and received very friendly replies.
For now, that is certainly enough.”
“I am not at all worried. I think he will
show up. If he doesn’t want to come, he
won’t come. It will be a big party in any
case and the honour belongs to him.”
Dylan will be honoured for being a ‘great
poet in the English tradition’ in Stockholm
on December 10th if he deems it necessary to attend.
GRIZZLY BEAR’S NEW ALBUM ‘90 PER CENT DONE’
Grizzly Bear‘s next record is ’90 per
cent done’, according to the band on
Twitter.
This’ll be the last update until there’s
some music to share from the Brooklyn
band as they put the finishes touches to
the successor to 2012’s sublime Shields.
It was Live4ever’s number one album of
that year, described by us as one which
‘reveals itself slowly and rewards the listener greatly if you allow it to speak of its
own accord‘:
“Adopting a much heavier sound, it is
also a much more aggressive album.
Where ‘Veckatimest’ opened to the gentle
rolling, slowly climactic, acoustic blues
of ‘Southern Point’, here ‘Sleeping Ute’
tears and shreds its path with a thunder-

CANCEL LAS VEGAS
GIG, MICK JAGGER HAS
‘BAD LARYNGITIS’
“I’d really like to thank all the fans for being such an inspiration over the years,”
he’s said. “What an amazing time it has
been.”
As for Franz Ferdinand, this is their first
outing since influential guitarist Nick McCarthy left the band in the summer to
spend more time with his family, and duly
launched the new Manuela side-project
with his wife Manuela Gernede.
“I’m going to concentrate on production
and writing some completely different
things for a bit and we can all look forward to hearing the new Franz Ferdinand
album.”
CHUCK BERRY CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY
WITH NEW ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT
As one of the true pioneers of rock
and roll we’d expect nothing less
from Chuck Berry than to celebrate
his 90th birthday by releasing a new
album.
“I’ve worked on this record for a long
time,” Berry has said in a statement. “Now
I can hang up my shoes!”
ous boom – an unpredictable, unstable,
reverberating electric storm.”
“Its unexpected shift to a calm and reflective nylon-strung coda serves as a flawless
segue for the gentle opening lull of heartbeat drums and sweeping synth in ‘Speak
In Rounds’.”
Chuck will be out next year and is something of a family affair with contributions
from his children Charles Berry Jr and
Ingrid Berry – the former has described
the songs as covering ‘the spectrum from
hard-driving rockers to soulful, thoughtprovoking time capsules of a life’s work’.
“It is a great honour to be a part of this record and the broader legacy of Chuck Berry,” said Paul Roper of Dualtone Records.
“This body of work stands with the best of
his career and will further cement Chuck
as one of the greatest icons of rock and
roll.”
There’s been a rare hiccup on the good ship
Rolling Stones; a gig in Las Vegas scheduled
for tonight has been cancelled.
“We hope to have information about the possibility of rescheduling this date very soon,” a
statement from the band added.
Frontman Mick Jagger has ‘bad laryngitis’,
the possibility of the show getting a new date
is consequently being explored. “I’m so sorry
about the cancellation of Wednesday’s show
in Las Vegas, I’ve got bad laryngitis,” Jagger’s
whispered on Twitter.
The Stones have just completed a second
weekend at Desert Trip with Paul McCartney,
The Who, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan and Neil
Young, and are getting ready to release a new
blues album on December 2nd.
“I do apologise to everyone who bought tickets.”
Blue & Lonesome marks their first studio LP
since 2005’s A Bigger Bang.
