Important Information REFUNDS – No cash refunds will be given at any time. A participant who withdraws from a program prior to the registration deadline is entitled to a full refund, minus a five dollar ($5) administration fee. Churchill County Fairgrounds Calendar of Events 2014/15 September 1 Lion’s Jr. Rodeo As the leaves start to change colors, we will have our fall schedule open up with our popular fan favorites. The annual Scarecrow Factory will be held at Lattin Farms as always with the spine-tingling Haunted House and Hayride being held here at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. When old man winter sneaks up on us later in the year you know it is time to get the skis and snowboards dusted off because it is time for the 2014 Youth Ski Program held at Diamond Peak. 13 Fallon Horsemen’s Association We will be constantly putting together a varied schedule of programs, classes, and leagues throughout this new season, so please stay posted! This year expect us to add more new and exciting classes and events to go along with our mainstays like dog obedience and fitness bootcamp classes. After School Program for children 6-12 years old. The C.A.R.E. Program is a high quality program aimed at helping your child complete school work in a stress free & enriching environment. Program is limited to first 30 campers; hours are from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. We are open early on Fridays and teacher workdays. Each week includes tutoring, enrichment games, snacks, swimming and reading challenges and more. Pre-registration for each week is required. Churchill County Parks and Recreation is offering a Winter Day Camp for children 6-12 years old. Camp is limited to first 30 campers; business hours are from 7:30am to 6:00pm. Each week includes snacks, games, activities, crafts, swimming, and more. Pre-registration for each week is required. Registration begins November 10, 2014. We will not be open on holiday Thursdays or the following Fridays either week. Dec. 22 – Dec. 24 Dec. 29 – Dec. 31 Full Week $65 first child, $60 second child Drop In $25 (Per day) Dog Obedience Start down the road to a new and stronger relationship with your dog every Thursday. Work on problem areas such as jumping, digging, barking, and household manners. Socialization, beginner, and advanced classes available. (Instructor: Carla Popeney - Classes meet on Wednesday nights in the Multi-purpose Building. located at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. All ages welcome - young people must be able to restrain and control their dog). Dates & Time: October 29 – December 3 • 5:30 p.m. Puppy Class • 6:35 p.m. Beginner/Intermediate Cost is $60. Discounts are available for seniors and returning dogs. Pre-Registration is required. Additional classes will be held after the New Year begins. CO-ED Adult Volleyball League Time for the competition to heat up in Volleyball. Our CO-ED volleyball league is always one of the most fun things to play and even watch throughout the year. The true volleyball talent in the town really shines through when the men and women get together to compete. Cost will be $225 per team. Teams will be entered into the league on first come, first serve basis, so get into the Parks and Recreation office early. Games will be held at the new Venturacci Gym. Dates & Time: October 14 – December 16 6:00 – 9:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays Pre-registration Required 2015 Youth Ski Program Ski or board the Peak! Join us for another season of winter action at Diamond Peak Ski Resort. Program includes FOUR days of skiing or boarding, bus transportation, ski or board rentals, lessons, and lift ticket! Trips will begin in January 2015. Registration begins In November 2014. Adult (18+) chaperones are always needed for the program. Chaperones are treated to a day on the slopes as well. Dates, Time & Price: Trip Dates – (January 10, 24 and February 8, 28) **Dates subject to change Full Package - $200.00 (All 4 trips, transportation, rental equipment) Ticket only (8-14 years old) – $160.00 Ticket Only (15 – 17 years old) – $180.00 Daily Walk-On Rates and Transportation only rates also available Recreation Clubs Churchill County Cyclists The Churchill Cyclists are a bike club dedicated to building a community of bicyclists. Club members will enjoy a recreational style of cycling trips in the local area. We hope to build a diverse group and find a few inspired leaders for trips. This club welcomes all new members. Don’t forget to begin preparing for the No Hill Hundred that will be held on the first Saturday in October 2014. Dates, Location & Time: Meetings and group rides held monthly. Fishing Club The Fishermen in Northern Nevada Fishing Club is a new club here in Churchill County looking to compete against one another and have a great time fishing in the waters in and around the county. We hope to build a diverse group of members and people of all skill levels. This club welcomes all new members. Meeting dates will vary each month. Club based tournaments will be held monthly for your chance to win prizes and awards. Price: $10 annual dues Membership based upon calendar year Interest List for Recreation Classes Churchill County Parks & Recreation is creating an interest list for potential recreation classes/leagues. These classes/leagues will be offered if there is sufficient interest and response. Please call or register at our office. (325 Sheckler Rd. 423 - 7733) • Adult Kick Ball League - League play for adults 18 and over will be on Saturdays. The number of players per team and duration of season will be determined by the number of people registered. Dates: Spring 2015 • 3 on 3 Basketball League – Due to the opening of new Venturacci Gym, we are looking at a half-court three on three basketball league. Dates: Spring 2015, possibly February to March. Churchill County Parks & Recreation | Fall/Winter 2014 | 5 special events & Community Interest State Championship Coed Mud Volleyball Scarecrow Factory Dates & Location: Dates, Times and Cost: Each team is guaranteed 3 games. The tournament will be limited to the first 24 teams who sign up. Cost is $200 per team, $230 if your register after 8/20/2014. Register early to guarantee an event t-shirt. There will be cash prizes for the top 3 teams. Last year’s championship team took home $400 in cash. Event prize money is sponsored by Dairy Queen of Fallon. Churchill County Fairgrounds (mud pits) August 30 – August 31 Pre-Registration Required Registration begins in July October 11, 2014, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. $5 per kit Haunted House & Hay Ride The No Hill Hundred Churchill County Cyclists and Parks & Recreation invite you to join us for this fully supported, non-competitive, bicycle tour for people of all ages. We have provided 30 and 60 mile route options for those riders that feel they can’t quite ride the full 100 miles. Spend the day cycling the prehistoric Lahontan Lake bottom that is now the desert oasis of Nevada. All rides start and finish at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. The routes are not difficult and riders will travel over mostly rural county roads. The terrain is flat! Your non-refundable registration fee provides: An event half zip fleece jacket (guaranteed if registered by the September 16 deadline), several food and rest stops, lunch will be provided for the Metric and Century riders, route map and detailed cue sheets, on-road sag support. Date, Time & Location: October 4, 2014 Registration / Departure 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Costs: 30 Mile 60 & 100 mile Event Jersey Churchill County Parks & Recreation will be firing up the Scarecrow Factory. We supply all the material needed to make your scarecrow come to life including pants, shirts and the straw to bring your scarecrow to life; you supply the imagination! Lattin Farms will host the factory along with the corn maze and plenty of fresh produce to enjoy with your newly made friend. $40.00 $60.00 $65.00 We invite all to enjoy traditional spooks, candy, and a few blood curdling screams. The Haunted House will be held at the Churchill County Fairgrounds in The Dry Gulch. The Hay Ride will even put you in the Halloween spirit as this isn’t your normal walk in the park hayride. The Haunted House will be open to “those who dare enter” on October 30th and October 31st from 6-10 p.m. For the less brave, we suggest you come during the first hour and a half each night when we keep the haunted house more kid friendly. Volunteers are welcome but must be responsible and approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation. Dates, Times and Cost: October 30 - 31, 2014 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm each night. $4 for the Haunted House $2 for the Hay Ride There will be a $1 discount for the Haunted House if you bring a single canned food item as a donation. 6 | Churchill County Parks & Recreation | Fall/Winter 2014 special events & Community Interest Turkey Trot 5k Run/Walk Churchill County Parks and Recreation is happy to bring you the Turkey Trot 5K run being held on November 22, 2014. This event will benefit a local charitable organization. Entry fee for the event is $20 for all participants. We will have a post race around ceremony and lunch available to all participants. Raffles and prizes will available throughout the day including Thanksgiving Turkeys and fully-prepared meals. The race will start and finish in the lot at the Convention Center. The race will start at 10:00 am and registration will be opened at 9:00 am for our day of entrants and for race packet pick-up. For more information call Parks and Recreation at 423-7733. Dates, Times and Cost: November 22, 2014 Check-in begins at 9:00 am Race begins 10:00 am $20 per person (Before the event date) $25 per person (Day-of registration) 5K Family Challenge New Year’s Race Join the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department again for another exciting New Year’s 5K walk/run. NEW FOR 2015; THE RACE WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY!!! Come run in the snow or sun and get the year started off on the right foot. This run is always a fan favorite for us all and you never know what exciting weather will be there to challenge you to stick to those resolutions. Enjoy a post-race breakfast at the awards ceremony hosted by the Elks Lodge for only $5 per person. Dates, Times and Cost: January 3, 2015 (Saturday) Check-in begins at 9:00 am Race begins 10:00 am $15 per person $50 for a family of four $3 per dog Youth Coed Basketball Tournament We are looking forward to having our ninth annual youth tournament. The tournament is split into three age groups with 1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th grade and 7th to 8th grade. The entry fee per team is $175.00. Each team will receive event shirts and have a chance to take home prizes such as trophies, sweatshirts and event bags. The dates will be set later in the year, if you have any question call the office of Churchill County Parks and Recreation at 4237733 and speak to Danny Gleich. Rattlesnake Trail Run New Year’s Eve Bonfire and Fireworks The annual New Year’s Eve Bonfire will be held on December 31, 2014 following the fireworks in the Fairgrounds Parking Lot. There will be refreshments available during the bonfire and fireworks. Celebrate the New Year with friends and family around a nice warm fire. Event will take place rain or shine.. or snow. Get there early for a great seat to see the fireworks in the grandstands at the Fairgrounds. Please donate any pallets, wood or used Christmas trees to the bonfire starting December 16th. The Rattlesnake Trail run is the race for our more adventurous running participants. The race starts and finishes at the lot located at the corner of Rio Vista and Indian Lakes Road in the shadow of Rattlesnake Hill. This route is 3.5 miles long and includes a climb up to the top of the hill. Each runner will be given an event shirt and post race treats with their registration fee. Awards will be given to the top 3 athletes per age group. Sign up at the Parks and Recreation Office. Churchill County Parks & Recreation | Fall/Winter 2014 | 7 fitness classes Fitness Bootcamp Classes Churchill County Parks and Recreation is proud to bring you morning fitness bootcamp classes. These classes are designed for all levels of fitness. Join Marianne Woller Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings each week at The Gym at Venturacci Park at 5 am for classes. The drop-in rate for each class is $5 or you can purchase a 10 class punch pass for $40. Pre-registration is preferred. All equipment will be provided by the class. Date, Time, Location & Cost: Monday, Wednesday & Friday Mornings at 5:00 a.m. $40 (10 class punch pass) $5 Drop-in Rate Yoga Classes Churchill County Parks and Recreation will continue to offer weekly yoga classes with instructor Nikki Collier. Yoga focuses on increased balance, flexibility and stamina. The classes will be held Monday and Thursday evenings at 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Building on the Fairgrounds. Cost is $30 for the 4 classes or $10 per drop-in class. All levels of yoga participants, from first-timers to advanced, are welcome to come out and take in the benefits that yoga has to offer. Pre-registration is preferred. Date, Time, Location & Cost: Monthly – Thursday at 6:15 p.m. (evening) The Multi-Purpose Building, 225 Sheckler Rd. $30 ( for four classes) $10 drop-in Zumba Classes for Adult and Youth Join Churchill County Parks and Recreation for weekly Zumba Classes. Zumba Fitness is a cardio interval workout that incorporates basic and easy to follow Salsa, Merengue, Soca, Cumbia, Belly dance, Filmi, Squats, Lunges, Reggaton, and many other Aerobic Elements. It is the melting pot of fitness and most importantly you do NOT need dance experience to participate and be successful in the class. Zumba is an extremely effective workout, as you can potentially burn 400-800 calories in an hour long class. The best part of the class is that it is FUN, “Exercise in Disguise.” Our instructors are all fully certified. Pre-registration is preferred, but drop-ins are welcome. We also offer Zumba classes for youth ages 7-11. Children do not need to know how to dance, but only how to have FUN! HEALTH AND WELLNESS Osteoperosis 101 This is a one-hour class that meets twice a week for 6 weeks. Diet and lifestyle are a women’s first line of defense in this chronic disease. This class will include 45 minutes of simple and effective strength training and balance activities that can be done at home. This is followed by a 15-minute interactive discussion on how physical activity and getting adequate calcium and vitamin D help to prevent and/or manage osteoporosis. Equipment provided. No special clothing necessary. Next session to being in February. Contact the office for dates (775-423-7733) Tues/Thurs 9 am (6 Week Class) Multi-purpose Building (225 Sheckler Road) Turn Back the Clock This is a one-hour class that meets twice a week for 6 weeks. Turn back the clock after age 40 when it comes to a loss of strength and stamina and also in preventing or managing chronic illnesses such as COPD, heart disease, and obesity. We will spend 45 minutes on a variety of evidence-based, simple and effective strength training activities that can be done at home. These strength training activities increase a person’s ability to begin doing aerobic exercise such as walking or biking. We will also spend 15-minutes in an interactive discussion on nutrition basics with specifics tailored to individual participant’s needs. Equipment provided. No special clothing necessary. Low-impact and sweat-free. For all fitness levels. Next session to being in February. Contact the office for dates (775-423-7733) T/Th 10 am (6 Week Class) Multi-purpose Building (225 Sheckler Road) Diabetes 101 This is a one-hour class that meets twice a week for 6 weeks. Diet and lifestyle are key to managing type 2 diabetes. This class will include 45 minutes of simple and effective strength training activities that can be done at home. This is followed by a 15-minute interactive discussion on how strength training, aerobic exercise, and meal planning help to successfully manage type 2 diabetes. Equipment provided. No special clothing necessary. Next session to being in February. Contact the office for dates (775-423-7733) T/Th 11 am (6 Week Class) Multi-purpose Building (225 Sheckler Road) Health Eating 101 This is a 30-minute class that meets once a week for 4 weeks. Stop worrying and relax! Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean feeling deprived and confused. This class will include 4 interactive discussions with hands-on preparation of a light lunch at each class. We’ll emphasize preventing and treating diabetes. (Designed for individuals on a work lunch break. We can possibly accommodate your lunch schedule if it doesn’t quite fit the posted class time.) Exercise is the cheapest medicine available to help treat chronic illnesses. This includes strength training, yet it is often an overlooked or misunderstood aspect of physical fitness routines. In this class we will perform a variety of evidencebased, simple and effective strength training activities you can do at home. You will also learn how to apply what you know to the gym. Equipment provided. No special clothing necessary. Low-impact and sweat-free. For all fitness levels. (Designed for individuals on a work lunch break. We can possibly accommodate your lunch schedule if it doesn’t quite fit the posted class time.) Next session to being in February. The cost would be reduced to $25 if the participant is a member of the auxiliary service organization at Banner, has been discharged from the hospital within the past 6 months, or has a copy of current lab work (lipid panel, hemoglobin A1c, or a bone scan) dated within the past 6 months. For the 4-week classes - $25 per participant or a reduced cost of $15 for participants meeting the above qualifications. 8 | Churchill County Parks & Recreation | Fall/Winter 2014 Aquatics Aquatic programs take place at the Churchill County Pool 333 Sheckler Road • 423-7091 Hello Community, The season is changing and we will begin a month long closure for maintenance from August 16th (the first day of school) until Monday, September 13th. Our hours will be changing to accommodate the community with more open swims during the week and the NEW American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. We would like to invite you over for a swimming good time! Our indoor swimming pool has a temperature of 84 degrees and is very refreshing year round. All ages are welcome and knowing how to swim is not necessary to participate in many of our programs. Whether you are interested in organized lap swim, individualized exercise, Shallow & Deep Water Exercise classes, Take Away the Aches classes, swimming lessons, competitive swim, or just to play and get away from everyday life, our facility is here for you. Please give us a call if you would like the pool all to yourself with a pool rental or would like to participate in any of our programs held by our certified staff. Sincerely, Your Pool Staff Youth Programs Swim Lessons: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program Your child can learn water safety and improve swimming strokes for recreational and competitive swimming year round. Our instructors are certified Water Safety Instructor professionals. All participants receive a booklet and certificates are awarded to participants who successfully meet requirements for the next level. A Parent Orientation will be available for parents the first week of class. Preschool Aquatics Prerequisites: Ages 6 months – 2 years old. One child per parent in the water. Parent’s assist their child in developing comfort in the water. This level develops water safety skills and basic body positions for you and your child to practice around water. Water adjustment, swimming, fun, and enjoyment are emphasized to gain comfort for your child in the water. Prerequisites: Ages 2 years - 4 years old. One child per parent in the water. Parent’s assist their child in listening to cues, becoming familiar with an instructor, taking direction on swimming movements, and moving through the water. Preschoolers will learn proper pool entry, improve their underwater comfort, and learn basic swimming skills preparing your child for Level 3. Three levels in this course are available. Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills Prerequisites: Child must be at least 4 years of age, willing to be in the water without parent, be able to listen to the instructor, and walk in the water. This level develops comfort in the water with skill assistance from the instructor. Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills Prerequisites: Child must be comfortable and able to walk in water with a 3 ft depth. Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds, and recover to a vertical position. This level teaches children to become more independent in basic swimming skills. Level 3 Stroke Development Prerequisites: Child must be able to step into chest deep water, tread water or float for 15 seconds, and swim across the shallow end. This level helps swimmers build confidence and develop coordination of swimming strokes. Level 4 Stroke Improvement Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to jump into deep water, tread water or float for 1 minute, and swim 25 yds. This level builds confidence of swimming in deep water and improving stroke technique. Level 5 Stroke Refinement Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to jump into deep water, glide under water, swim front crawl 25 yds, and swim elementary backstroke 25 yds. Swimmer must be able to swim breaststroke 15yds and swim back crawl 15 yds. This level improves swimmer endurance and refines swimming technique of traditional strokes. Churchill County Parks & Recreation | Fall/Winter 2014 | 9 Youth Programs Swim Lessons: Level 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to shallow dive into deep water, swim front and back crawl 50 yds, swim elementary backstroke 50 yds. Swimmer must be able to swim breaststroke 25 yds, backstroke 25 yds all with efficient turning styles. 3 Focus Courses: 1) Personal Water Safety, 2) Fundamentals of Diving, and 3) Fitness Swimmer. This level refines all six strokes so swimmers can swim with ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances. Swimmers prepare for a lifelong love of swimming in different emphasis of the sport including diving, competitive swimming, water safety, and recreation. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with GuardStart, Water Safety Presentations, Waterfront Lifeguarding, and Waterpark lifeguarding. Participants must be 17 years old and upon successful completion. Dates, Times and Cost: Winter Break Course length 30 hrs $250 Adult Programs Take Away the Aches Safety Programs Lifeguard Training This American Red Cross course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over. Pre-requisites: Must be 15 yrs old and pass the pre-course of 1) 300yd swim using front crawl and breaststroke, 2) swim 20yds, surface dive 7-10ft, retrieve a 10lb object, swim 20yds back to starting point and exit the water 3) tread water with hands out of the water for 2 minutes. Certification includes Lifeguard Training/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training. A balance, flexibility, coordination, and strengthening class to improve daily function and living. Class is intended for all people that may benefit from water therapy and the support of the water. It is amazing how much easier it is to support yourself in the water and how much easier it can be to move your body. All ability levels and non-swimmers welcome. Participants must be 16 years old and will gain certification as a Water Safety Instructor. This course authorizes instructors to teach swimming lessons from the Learn-to-Swim Program Levels 1-6, Basic Water Rescue, water safety outreach presentations, and Parent & Child Aquatics. Increase your strength with resistance training and improve your endurance with no joint impact. These classes increase your physical fitness with the support of the water. If you love water and exercise, you will love this workout. You must be able to swim without fear of deep water. Water wings, suits with floatation, etc. that are not U.S. Coast Guard approved do not provide the needed safety to allow your child to swim alone. • To swim in the deep end, you must be able to swim or wear a lifejacket (a swim test maybe required) • No refunds available for daily admission or food purchases. • Refunds may be submitted in writing and are subject to approval by the Aquatics Supervisor. • Free passes are available if our pool must close unexpectedly. • Pool programs may be offered simultaneously.
