for our 1:1
Kia Ora / Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends of Tauranga
Intermediate School
I hope you all had a very pleasant winter vacation and welcome back to
Term Three. Once again it will be very busy with a multitude of events
happening culminating in the 13th NZCT AIMS GAMES in Week Seven
(Sunday 4 September to Friday 9 September 2016).
The AIMS GAMES 2016 has attracted 9,200 competitors and 275 schools
up from 2015 figures of 8,032 competitors and 263 schools.
I hope that your sons and daughters at Tauranga Intermediate School are
able to participate in the 2016 Games in one of the 21 codes being
offered. In 2016, three new codes have been introduced. They are Canoe
Slalom (former students Ryan and Ella Nicholas currently competing at
the Rio Olympics), BMX (former student Kurt Pickard a former Olympian)
and Futsal (Brazilian Indoor Football - not offered at the Olympics). It is
unlikely that we will offer any further sports due to the current size of our
event.
It is anticipated that the 2016 NZCT AIMS GAMES will bring close to $3
million dollars into the community and the week.

TIS PARENTS GROUP
We warmly welcome you to attend our Parents Group meetings. We hold these twice a term in our TIS
staffroom. At our evenings we inform you about everything that is happening at Tauranga Intermediate.
Including:
what is happening around the school
what programmes are running in the school
the school’s future plans and directions
factors which will affect or influence the way our school runs
We discuss these points, ask questions, and contribute our ideas. The Principal, a teacher from the staff,
and a member of the Board of Trustees are at every meeting to report to you and answer your questions.
We also invite guest speakers on education and family related topics.
The tone of the group is relaxed, and informational. Parents who come to meetings feel more connected
and knowledgeable about Tauranga Intermediate. They are able to talk with their child in a more connected
way about what is happening at school. They feel like they have more knowledge about how to solve
problems if they arise, and they appreciate the opportunity to give their feedback and have a say in the
running of the school.
When: Our next meeting of the year is on Tuesday13 September. This will be a normal meeting with no
special topic.

Be a great role model. Let your child see you enjoying reading – whether it’s
the newspaper, a magazine, a comic, a cook book or a novel. Read
magazines, newspapers and books in your first language.
Help your child gather newspaper, magazine and journal articles for a topic of
interest at school. Help them find information on internet sites. Talk to your child about what they have been reading on the Internet. What
have they learnt? What questions do they still have? Where else could they
find information that would be useful?
Read through your child’s homework tasks and questions together and talk
about what they are planning to do to finish the homework
Play card and board games as a family. Increase the challenge – it really helps
children’s learning.
