None of us could figure out how to tell Otto the news. We were worried what would happen at Monday’s rehearsal when You see, Dooger was two keyboard players playing the part of the showed up. Nothing would be boring the rest of the week thanks to King Lear. trikes o ut T with our band. “I can only play keyboards,” Dooger said. “You’ll play keyboards,” Anna replied. uesday went the same way, so at school on Wednesday, I confronted Dooger. “Rehearsal is at 6:00 sharp tonight,” I said. “Be there or beware!” “Practice is boring,” he said. “I’ll just show up for the performance on Saturday.” I couldn’t believe it. After school I went home We nee d to convin ce Ott o to rejoin the ba nd! and pulled the headphones off Otto’s ears. “I know the brain is fragile,” I told him. “But it’s protected in many different ways. You don’t have to wear these headphones.” “I’m not protecting my brain. I’m listening to music.” “Speaking of music,” I said, “why haven’t you been at rehearsal for two days?” Hi! I’m Shakespeare ... just a guy who writes plays. He told me he heard about our plan to replace him with Dooger. “I’m done We nee to use d our BRAINS ! with The Doubles, Iz. You guys didn’t even have the brains to tell me you were getting Dooger to play keyboards.” I’ve researched a lot about the brain with Anna. So I’m really confused sometimes. For example, I actually learned about neurotransmission. Really, that’s a word! Neurotransmission is the way brain cells talk to each other with electrical and chemical messages. So if I can figure that out, why couldn’t I figure out that we’d hurt Otto’s feelings if We nee d to consul t Aunt S with ama and Go ntha rdon! we asked Dooger to play keyboards? Well, I don’t know the answer to that, but I knew I had to change things. I called Hannah and Anna and we all decided to consult with Aunt Samantha and Gordon. g ordon could help because he’s our band manager and he might have some ideas about how to get the band ready by Saturday. Sam could help because she always has good ideas about everything. We all met in Dubby, our band bus. Otto came up with that name. Sam stood at the front of the bus. “So, you have two keyboard players in your band, but you don’t have any keyboard players in your band. It sounded kind of funny when she put it that way, but Sam was right. She continued. “What about this guy Goober –” “Dooger,” Anna corrected her. “Okay, Dooger. We just need to remind Otto how much fun the band was and his brain will tell him to rejoin the band.” Sam smiled. “Exactly.” I was smiling too, but I was still a little confused. “Where do Otto’s taste buds fit in?” “Oh, I know,” Hannah said before Sam could answer. “One of the parts of his brain controls his hearing. If we bake Otto a cake, the taste bud section of the brain will tell the hearing section of the brain to listen to us!” We all laughed at that. “You’re learning well, Hannah,” Sam said. I’m quitting. I quit The Doubles! Today is the first day of the rest of my life. It doesn’t feel so weird strange bizarre freaky. Okay, so maybe it’s a little squirrely (however you spell that wacky word). October 9 Day 2 of my new life I am not playing second fiddle keyboard to Dooger. He already beat me out to play King Lear in the school play and now he’s taking my spot in the band. Forget it. Although I do miss seeing Hannah a little bit. October 10 Day 3 of my new life Now I hear Dooger hasn’t shown up for rehearsal a single time! I hear the brain is made up of many different parts working together and each part does something different. I bet Anna and Izzi want to get at part of Dooger’s brain right now. I kind of miss rehearsal. But I’m not going back. October 11 Day 4 of my new life Ha! Dooger quit, got fired, isn’t playing keyboards anymore - even though he never was because he never showed up for one single rehearsal. They’re not getting me back. I wonder if they’ll ask me. I guess I could think about it. I mean, it’s kind of fun and all. I hope they ask me. Maybe I should go see if they want me back. It’s almost rehearsal time, I better get moving. October 12 Day 1 of my new, new life Yes!!! Otto’s back and you’re gonna be in trouble!! Otto just wants to have fu-un! Hoo-ha, I’m back in the band, Mr. Keyboard Player. We’re the opening act for a concert tomorrow so we have to practice hard tonight since we’ve missed a few days. Hannah and Izzi and Anna baked me a cake to get me to join the band again. Of course, I was already coming over there to beg them to let me back in, but don’t tell them that! I think Hannah made the icing because it was the best part. I know the brain holds a ton of information, I just hope my brain can remember everything I need to play for the concert! 10 finding lots of facts for their science report. But they Anna and Izzi have been know how far along they are on their assignment, so don’t want anyone to they send each other messages in secret code. This month, they’re using a wheel code. We really want to get an A, so we’re working hard. It’s interesting discovering new things. Our second chapter is titled “All About the Brain.” The brain is extremely important. It controls what you think, feel, and do. It even controls stuff like your breathing and your heartbeat. So you can see how important the brain really is, right? That’s why we gave it a whole chapter. The brain weighs only three pounds. That’s a pretty good bargain for us. Only three pounds but it can store huge amounts of information because it has so many connections between its billions of cells. Wow! The brain looks like it has a bunch of wrinkles. It has lots of different parts all working together, but with each part doing a different thing. For example, one part is responsible for your speech, another part controls your thinking, another part controls memory, another part your vision – well, you get the idea. Your brain is fragile, but fortunately it gets lots of protection, like from your skull and skin and some other things. Okay, ready for the hard part? Neurotransmission. Try saying that with a mouth full of spaghetti! Neurotransmission is the way brain cells talk to one another using electrical and chemical messages. In other words, if a neuron in your brain gets excited, it sends an electrical message somewhere else in the brain and pretty soon you’re excited. Actually, really soon you’re excited, because all this happens at about 220 miles per hour. The world’s fastest wooden roller coaster only tops out at 78 mph.
