Hermes owes this market position to its insistence on unsurpassed quality. We feel an
obligation to this tradition and it is our main priority for the future. This obligation is the
greatest incentive there is, and we devote all our energy and commitment to it – tradition
shaping the future.

SUPPORTING NATURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
C
ompliance with national and international laws and regulations is one of the key principles
of Hermes corporate policy and protection of the environment is a core constituent of
our corporate responsibility.
As a consequence, as long ago as 1996, Hermes was the first European abrasives factory
to be successfully audited on a voluntary basis in line with the EMAS (Eco-Management
and Audit Scheme).
The management system currently being implemented covers all areas of the company, with
processes relevant to the environment, as well as to quality, being described and monitored
internally as well as certified externally by the TÜV-Nord organization in line with DIN EN
ISO 14001:2009.
QUALITY – OUR TRADEMARK
B
ound to tradition on the one hand, yet a pioneering developer of innovative products
on the other, Hermes places greatest emphasis on the production of high-quality,
state-of-the-art abrasives.
To enable this high standard of quality to be pursued and expanded still further in the
future, the TÜV NORD CERT auditing company awarded the Hermes Group the quality
seal for meeting the requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001.
Our customers – in other words you – benefit considerably from this reliability.

Knowing how to grind and
T
he demand for orthopaedic implants and surgical instruments is
rising steadily worldwide. The quality required from these kinds
of products is enormously high.
As a consequence, strict demands are also placed on the abrasives used to make these products: defined characteristic surface
values with low tolerances and rapid throughputs throughout the
entire grinding process. Hermes satisfies these requirements with a
complete product program for every processing step (pre-grinding –
intermediate grinding – finishing), the quality and economy of which
are most convincing of all.
PRE-GRINDING
The pre-grinding stage grinds cast, forged or rough-cut blanks of
implants or instruments, the majority made of stainless steel, titanium
or chromium-cobalt alloys, using mainly grit sizes 36, 60 and 80.
Primary applications
• Deburring and even out marks of cutting operations from initial
production (e.g. turning or milling)
• Removing surface changes, e.g. layers of scale or tempering
colors from preceding heat treatment processes
• Grinding to particular dimensions and shapes
This requires abrasives with convincing stability, high stock removal
rates and long tool lives. To select the right abrasive, the backing
needs to be as rigid as possible but as flexible as necessary.

The most temperature-intensive grinding of the workpiece takes place
at the pre-grinding stage and to ensure that entrained heat does not
cause any structural changes to the workpiece surfaces, Hermes
grinding belts are generally provided with an additional coating with
grinding aid for this process step to ensure “cool” grinding.
Recommended Hermes types
• High-performance belts with ceramic grain

INTERMEDIATE GRINDING
Recommended Hermes types
Intermediate grinding serves primarily to prepare the surfaces of the workpiece as well
as possible for subsequent finishing processes. Intermediate grinding uses mainly grit
sizes 100, 120, 150 and 180.
• High-performance belts with
ceramic grain CR 456 Z,
CN 466 X-flex, CR 456 J-flex
Primary applications
• Zirconia alumina grinding belt
RB 486 24 YX
• Elimination of coarse marks of pre-grinding
• Reduction in surface roughness
The end-finish desired by the customer defines the number of intermediate grinding steps
and grit sequences required.
FINISHING
• Aluminum oxide grinding belts
RB 417 YX, RB 346 MJ,
RB 346 X-flex, RB 406 J-flex
• Recommended Hermes types
The finishing gives workpieces their final touch. The main grit sizes used are correspondingly fine: 220 and finer.
Primary applications
• Production of uniform visual/functional surfaces whilst maintaining characteristic
surface values determined by specifications
(e.g. degrees of gloss or roughness)
• Preparation for subsequent polishing operations
(e.g. grinding with Hermes microlite polishing wheels)
A special role is played by Hermes webrax abrasive web products which are used in the
form of belts or wheels and are especially suitable for matte finishing stainless steel surfaces.

Hermes bonded abrasives – we find individual
solutions for pre-grinding and for the final polish
H
ermes Schleifkörper GmbH in Dresden is one of Europe’s leading
bonded abrasives factories. Its extensive product portfolio enables
Hermes to provide customers with application-specific and highly
economical solutions for processes which both precede and follow
grinding with coated abrasives.
HERMES SUPERABRASIVES FOR
CONSISTENT HIGH QUALITY AT
A HIGH LEVEL OF AUTOMATION
A great benefit of vitrified-bonded Diamond/CBN abrasives is that
they can be dressed without subsequent sharpening. This increases
the degree to which the dressing process can be both reproduced
and automated, something which becomes especially clear when
large numbers of items are ground. It simultaneously guarantees
consistently high product quality.
The Hermes bonding system allows the porosity of the tool to be
adapted to a specific grinding task on an individual basis. Specific
adjustment of the ratio of abrasive to pores furthermore makes
it possible to keep grinding forces low and facilitate higher
performance in the grinding process.

In particular, Hermes Superabrasives make it possible
to grind economically high-alloyed steel which are
hard to cut. As implants and surgical instruments
are frequently made of stainless steel, titanium or
chrome-cobalt alloys, Hermes vitrified-bonded
Diamond/CBN abrasives are particulary suitable
for grinding workpieces of this nature.
These abrasives are characterized above all by
burr-free grinding of the materials mentioned; this
reduces re-grinding steps, improving the efficiency
and economy of the entire grinding process.
Product description
HERMES MICROLITE POLISHING WHEELS
FOR HIGH-QUALITY SURFACES
Hermes microlite polishing wheels satisfy the most discerning
requirements relating to the gloss and fine finish of surfaces when
a variety of materials are ground. They are elastic and their outstanding adaptability makes them especially suitable for finishing
and micro-deburring.
An elastic, polyurethane-based bond incorporating silicon carbide
grain allows microlite polishing wheels to adapt to individuallyshaped workpiece surfaces.
The finishing results are fine surfaces with a high degree of trueness
to specified workpiece surfaces. In many cases, microlite polishing
wheels lead to grinding steps being saved during finishing and thus
to higher productivity and economy.
Hermes microlite polishing wheels should preferably be used where
high-quality surfaces cannot be achieved using other abrasives.
