AUGUST 2012
Greetings!
It was birthday celebrations on a
recent club day for Irene Walker, 96
years old and still going strong. It was a
great turn out and everyone had a
good time. Congratulations Irene! We
will ask the Queen to get her pen out
and get that telegram ready.

I spoke to Colleen de Vere recently,
she is back into clay, which is good
news. It’s hard to fill that gap in your life
but clay is certainly therapeutic so we
hope Colleen gets lots of therapy.
Most will know by now that Joan Craig has cancer, so Brent, our
vice president has more important things on his mind than clay.
He knows that the club is here to provide support when required.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with them both.
Brent initiated the Six by Six by Six Competition (see advert on
p3) to get people involved in gas firing. Although we have
missed a couple of sessions the competition will proceed as
planned. Be sure to use stoneware clays. Production White,
White stoneware and porcelain react really well with most
glazes. Southern Stoneware and BRT come out a rich toasted
colour and take the shino glazes well. If unsure come along to a
club night or club day and assistance will be available.
The Pot-ins for the public raku are proceeding well thanks to
those who turn up on club day and to those who have taken
clay home to make a few items. June Hogan was our mystery
prize winner for July.

We have a Raku Workshop and a Club
Raku planned for October. The raku
workshop will be a demonstration day with
visiting potters. Two weeks later we will have
our Club raku for members and adult

putting aside a few pieces.
Our next cleaning bee will be on
Saturday29th September 10am – 12noon.
At the time of writing only 4 members have
their names on the list. We need 12.
Please do not leave it until December if
you can do it earlier. If you prefer to pay
$30 rather than clean please contact
Christine Hardy who is convenor or Joy
Snaddon our treasurer.
Carol Elsmann has reorganised the library
and is ready to do an inventory to see if
we have books missing. The club has
purchased several instructional DVDs.
These will form the basis of our adult class
programmes in 2012. They are also
available for members to borrow. Ray
Maddock (06 364 6355) will be handling
these so contact him if you are interested.
There will be a $120 fee to replace the
DVD if it is lost or damaged. DVDs maybe
taken out for two weeks. We have other
DVDs of workshops that the club has
organised over the years. These are
largely unedited.
HAPPY POTTING!

SIX BY SIX BY SIX
A COMPETITION FOR THE CREATIVE who can make a piece to fit
inside a box 6 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches but think outside
the square.
Brent is organising this and details appear below. We hope that
members will enter into the challenge. It’s our way to get members
involved in gas firing their work and have fun doing it. You are not
limited to the number of pieces you can put through and you don’t
have to be involved in the firing process. Let’s get those creative juices
moving. There will be plenty of help and advice available; you just
have to ask.
Criteria:
On Wednesday 5 September at
10am and on Saturday
8 September, at 10am there will
be glazing sessions for gas fired
pots. You will be able to see
what is available and how to
apply them. People don’t have
to wait for these sessions. You
can glaze and have your work
fired in the scheduled firings
anytime from now on. The final
gas firing will be on Wednesday
19 September.
Please don't forget!

Margaret, Brent or David (to name a few). Good luck!
Gas firing test pieces—in every
gas firing new glazes and combinations are tested in the hope of
‘striking gold’!
Our next Cleaning Bee of the
year will take place on 29 September 10am-12noon. The list is
on the wall beside the door. All
members are required to take
part in one cleaning bee each
year or pay $30 and we will pay
someone to do it for you.
Cleaning bees are held at the end
of each term and run for two
hours. It’s a great way to get
alongside other members and
tackle those jobs that are not on
the cleaner’s list.

FESTIVAL
AND
OF
POTS
GARDEN ART
12th – 21st January 2013.
The 2013 Festival Committee has held its first meeting so preparations are underway to
make this event bigger and better than last year. The publicity material is being rehashed and we are now also trying to divide up all the jobs which need to be
achieved both before and during the Festival.
Can Your Help?
The Festival of Pots and Garden Art Committee are looking for members who are prepared to take responsibility for two key areas of the event which are detailed below.
Gate Team Leader.
This involves:
 Putting up a list up in the Club Room requesting members to volunteer their time for
a duty.
 Setting up a roster.
 Training the teams so they are familiar with the duties they need to perform.
 Ensuring the equipment is available ie. Pens, wrapping paper, scissors, float, etc.
Reminding the members the evening before that they are on duty.
The manning of the gate is an integral part of the organization of the Festival, this job
doesn’t involve being at the Festival all day, most of the work is done beforehand.
Festival Opening Coordinator
This involves:
 Organize a person to open the event in co-operation with the Festival Committee.
 Cooperate with Karen to ensure the venue is ready.
 Purchase the drinks, organize glasses.
 Organize nibbles.
Attend the opening and make sure everything goes according to plan.
If you are interesting in undertaking either of these jobs and want
more information please contact Jude Tel: (06) 364 8642 .
