Sunday, April 14, 2-4pm *Please note: This event will take place in the library parking lot. In the spirit of spring cleaning, a shredding truck from Quality Shredding will be in our parking lot for on-site shredding of your personal documents. It’s a perfect opportunity to protect your privacy and get rid of clutter! They will take up to three boxes or bags of paper per family, and you can watch as your documents are shred and then recycled. There is no need to remove staples or paper clips from your documents, but please do not bring plastic, cardboard or hard drives. No sign-up necessary. Adult Programs Program registration for Bayport-Blue Point library patrons begins on Wednesday, February 27 at 10am. Registration is required for all programs listed unless otherwise noted. Patrons can register online, by phone, or in person. Patrons who register for programs that require fees have one week to come in and pay for the program before their spot is released. Any fees must be paid for by check. Except for driver safety programs, all checks must be made out to the Library. Program registration for non-residents will begin on Tuesday, March 5. Gluten Free Baking Monday, March 4, 7-8:30pm *Please note: This program was originally scheduled for December. There are still seats left but space is limited.* Gluten Free Chef Christine Puleo will whip up a variety of tasty baked goods including chocolate layer cupcakes and assorted muffins and cookies…all without gluten! Local resident and counselor Regina Perretti will be here to talk about the basics of brain injuries and answer questions. Another local resident will share her personal experience on living with a loved one who has experienced a brain injury. BPA613 Ukrainian Egg Decorating Monday, March 11 OR Thursday, March 28, 6-9pm Crafter Chris Mulholland returns to teach you how to paint intricate designs on a delicate egg shell. Each participant will also receive a kit to decorate more eggs at home. You’ll be working with permanent dyes, so be sure to wear appropriate attire. Fee: $12 payable by check only. BPA341 A Taste of Ireland with Chef Craig Tuesday, March 12, 6-7:30pm The Block Island Seafood Company will be back to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with some traditional Irish fare. We’ll demonstrate a traditional potato leek soup and BISCo’s take on a classic, lobster pot pie! These dishes would keep any Irishman warm on a cold night! Fee: $5 payable by check only. BPA619 The Lowdown on Recycling Tuesday, April 16, 3-4pm Maybe you already recycle at home, but do you know what happens to all of your bottles, papers and cans after they’re taken away? The answers might surprise you! A representative from Islip Town will be here to tell you all about the process of recycling and answer all of your questions about recycling, yard waste, etc. A demonstration on how to make recycled paper will be included. BPA616 Sportfishing on Long Island: Striped Bass Thursday, April 18, 7-9pm Sportfishing is a fun and popular activity practiced by many Long Island anglers. Capt. Jerry McGrath, a veteran angler and lecturer, returns by popular demand as he gives a multimedia presentation on how to catch Striped Bass. During the program Jerry will discuss bait & lure selection, how to locate fish, rigging, knots, tackle choices and safety issues. BPA672 Knitting & Crocheting Club Wednesday, April 24, 7-8:30pm Knitting and crocheting expert Joan Jewhurst returns to assist and advise patrons on projects and provide instruction to beginners. Beginners need to come with worsted weight yarn and a pair of number 7 or 8 needles for knitters or size “H” hook for crocheters. BPA309 Back to Basics: The Spring Kitchen Monday, April 29, 6:30-8pm Join Emilie Zaweski of Jamesport Harvest and Debbie Schmitt of Schmitts Family Farm to learn how to cook dishes using local, in-season food. BPA906 Boating Safety Friday, May 17 from 6-9pm AND Saturday, May 18 from 12-5pm To operate a personal watercraft in New York, you MUST hold a NY State Boating Safety Certificate. During this eight hour course, Captain Richard Cloonan will teach you everything you need to know in order to obtain this certificate. Upon passing the test at the end, participants will receive their NY State Boating Safety Certification. This class is intended for those ages 10 and older, and 14 and older if you wish to operate a jet ski. Debbie’s achievements have included: Ranked #1 on the US Sailing Team in the Yngling class (2005-2008); Winning the Yngling World Championships and the ISAF Women’s Match Racing Worlds in a single year (2005); Yngling Representative on the 2008 Olympic Team; 2010 US SAILING’s Olympic Team of the Year and much more. Technology Classes Computer Basics March 25th ~ Argo (R) 120 min Starring: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman Plot: A dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran. Given when needed, in a one on one setting, please inquire at reference. This is a slow-paced, hands-on workshop designed for the “first-time” user. The uses of the mouse & the windows desktop will be discussed as well as other beginner topics. Patrons will learn to create, save, and edit documents. Patrons will also learn how to cut and paste, copy and paste, create columns, add graphics, work with word art and create mailing labels. Prerequisite: A good working knowledge of how to use a mouse. Program Code: BPA404 Excel 2010 Thursday, April 4, & Thursday, April 11, 1-2:30pm (2 session class) This class provides a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel. Patrons will learn more functions of Excel, such as creating charts and an expansion of the formulas learned in the first class. Patrons will learn basic functions of this program, including how to create a Power Point presentation by making slides, inputting data and pictures. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE AND TO ACCOMMODATE BUSY SCHEDULES THE LIBRARY NOW OFFERS SEVERAL REGISTRATION OPTIONS: ONLINE, WALK IN, CALL IN AND PRE-REGISTRATION. Program space is limited and preference is given to children who are Bayport-Blue Point Library district residents. All children must have their own library card and a password to register online. You may come into the library to register or register by phone. Please have your child’s library card available. For families that will be away, pre-registration forms will be available on February 27th. They will be entered on the day of registration after 1:00pm. Caregivers please call to register non-district resident children who will then be placed in programs according to availability. The Children’s Services Department strives to provide fun and educational programs throughout the year which promote literacy and lifelong learning for children and their families. More and more children are signing up for library programs. To help us better serve you, please plan to attend all programs your child is registered for or call in advance if your child is not able to join us. Whenever possible the library will schedule additional programs to alleviate waiting lists. It is our hope that through programming we can share our appreciation of books with the children in our community, inspire them to love books and help them discover the joy of reading. Photos may be taken at our Library programs for publicity purposes. Please let us know if you do not want photos taken of your child. Many different foods and materials are used in our programs. Eight Strings and a Whistle Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 2 pm Eight Strings & a Whistle has been captivating audiences throughout the Northeast since 1998. The trio is committed to presenting works and expanding the repertoire for the unique combination of flute, viola and cello. To date, the trio has premiered over ten works and has collaborated with a diverse group of composers. Additionally, the trio incorporates lesser-known works for this combination from the Baroque through the Twentiethcentury into its repertoire.
