September 2010 This issue: A Bell Ringer of a Picnic Drive to the Picnic July Autocross In 1988, North Americans were finally introduced to the BMW M3 originally created in 1986 in Germany, and its high-revving 2.3-liter inline-4 with 192-hp instantly became a legend on this side of the Atlantic. Marking the 25th anniversary, BMW has built a limited run of 30 2011 Frozen Gray M3 coupes for the U.S. market featuring a unique matte gray paint with deep metallic luster, as well as a unique Fox Redand-black two-tone leather interior. Also opening it’s doors in 1988 was Commerce Printing Services, a small business dedicated to quality and service. More than two decades later, they both continue their tradition of innovation and passion, one for driving and the other for printing. 322 N. 12th Street • Sacramento, CA 95811 T: 916.442.8100 • F: 916.448.2727 www.commerceprinting.com 2011 Frozen Gray M3 photo courtesy of BMW North America, Inc. Not only is it time to start thinking about our 2011 chapter board elections coming up, but maybe it’s also time for you to think about becoming an active participant on the board! Please send us your candidate statement if you would like to take part in helping guide the second-largest chapter in the country. Feeling a little hesitant, but curious? Feel free to attend one of our board meetings, which are usually held on the second Thursday of each month in San Mateo. Remember, the minutes you read in the Bombe do not necessarily represent the accurate atmosphere of the meeting: think of the difference between the original version of an Impressionist’s masterpiece versus a reproduction on a postcard! The chapter is not run by some sort of secret cabal, though the terms and lingo we use may give you that impression at the first meeting you attend; no worries, it’s just our version of an efficient shorthand, which you’ll learn quite quickly. Personally, I don’t like the behind-thecurtain business model. That’s something you won’t find here—all our board members and event coordinators are easily accessible, and willing to learn new ways to improve the chapter’s programs to satisfy our members. Translate that to: We are eager for your input! Don’t be shy; if you see any imperfections or would like to help with a new kind of event—even if you think the idea is crazy enough to be rejected immediately— there is no outrageous plan we won’t consider. Perhaps you’ve seen that for yourself at one of the chapter events already! Send your emails to the board or event coordinators, and you’ll receive a response promptly. We will work to accommodate your ideas at upcoming events. By Aleksey Kadukin, Secretary In the big world, BMW’s racing programs have been doing a good job of entertaining us this year, successfully active in various competitions around the globe. In the ALMS, the BMW-Rahal Letterman Racing team has been strong and fighting for the podium at every race. The Continental Challenge podium is quite often occupied by teams running BMWs, and prototypes powered by Dinantuned BMW engines are collecting Grand-Am trophies at a record pace. Our European colleagues beat everybody at the 24-hour Nürburgring race in Germany, survived Le Mans in France, and posted good results at the Spa 24-hour race in Belgium. And next year look for Mini to fling some gravel and snow in the World Rally Championship! Wouldn’t it be great to see Petter Solberg racing in a Mini? I hope BMW will recognize the success of various racing teams, and celebrate 2011 by introducing a new enthusiast-oriented model! Wouldn’t it be great to see Petter Solberg racing in a Mini? Speaking of upcoming events, you won’t want to miss our Thunderhill high-performance-driving school in November. I hear the November weather at Thunderhill is far more merciful than summer’s 100-plus degrees-in-the-shade nastiness. Additionally, we’ve rolled two entertaining opportunities into one—you can also attend the November board meeting, which is scheduled after the last Saturday session at the track! If you can’t wait for what may appear in the future and need a new car immediately, do yourself a favor: Check out the awesome new BMW 335is. This car has a factory-tuned twin-turbo N54 engine, M-tuned suspension, aggressive M body kit, and blacked-out grilles and exhaust pipes, and is available with either a six-speed or with the dual-clutch transmission borrowed from the M3 parts bin. The 335is is only available in the U.S.—its exhaust note is so aggressive and loud that it doesn’t even pass European regulations! It sure makes you think that maybe BMW NA does listen to us BMW CCA members! As the HPDS season winds down, so does the autocross season. Try to make it out to our September and October autocrosses to play with your car. It’s also worth a trip to attend the Top Driver Shootout, the culmination of the season where top autocrossers duke it out to show who’s the most gonzo cone-avoider. If you miss out, you’ll have to wait until the new season in April next year—you might get bored during long winter months! One last thing: If you are ready for the lease or purchase of a new or CPO BMW, don’t forget about BMW NA’s Membership Rewards program, available to all BMW CCA members in good standing without membership lapse during a twelve-month period (which includes the purchase date). It is just one more reason among many to renew your membership and enjoy the activities provided by enthusiastic volunteers and Club friends! Actually, we are making plans to entertain you during the off-season. Keep an eye out for interesting tech sessions, tours, and the Winter Party! 4 Die Flüsternde Bombe September 2010 September 2010 Die Flüsternde Bombe 5 CALENDAR OF EVENTS x SEPTEMBER Sep 2-5 BMW Z Fest Z Fest Hyatt Regency,Valencia www.zfest.com Scott Pettit [email protected] Oct 17 Autocross GG Chpt Marina Municipal Airport, Marina Matt Visser & Kris Linquist www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Sep 9 Board Meeting GG Chpt Oct 20 Monterey Meet & Greet GG Chpt Original Nick’s Pizzeria, San Mateo Tammi Hull www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Salinas Michael Do Couto www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Sep 11 Ladies-only Workshop GG Chpt Oct 24 Avila Beach Tour & Tailgate GG Chpt Berkeley Motor Works, Albany Paula Williamson www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Avila Beach www.ggcbmwcca.org Sep 12 East Bay Italian Tour GG Chpt x NOVEMBER Nov 6 Top Driver Shootout GG Chpt Nov 13 GG Chpt Campo di Bocce, Livermore Mike Zampiceni www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Sep 18 Jalama Beach Burger Run Jalama Beach/Lompoc www.ggcbmwcca.org Sep 18 GG Chpt Dennis Harrold [email protected] Autocross GG Chpt Marina Municipal Airport, Marina Matt Visser & Kris Linquist www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Sep 25 Dinan Open House & Car Show Dinan Dinan Headquarters, Morgan Hill RSVP required: [email protected] x OCTOBER Oct 2 Wine Country Tour Napa/Sonoma www.ggcbmwcca.org Dennis Harrold [email protected] Marina Municipal Airport, Marina Matt Visser & Kris Linquist www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Board Meeting Thunderhill Raceway Park, Willows Tammi Hull www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Nov 13-14 Thunderhill Driving School Mark Feinberg [email protected] Oct 9 Technical Session GG Chpt Oct 14 Board Meeting GG Chpt Milt’s Service Garage,Vallego Aleksey Kadukin www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] San Luis Obispo www.ggcbmwcca.org Dec 9 Board Meeting Oct 15 Proudly hosted by www.ggcbmwcca.org Oct 16 Donna Seeley [email protected] Car Control Clinic Dennis Harrold [email protected] Original Nick’s Pizza & Pub, San Mateo Tammi Hull www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Saturday - September 11, 2010 9:45am – 12noon BMW Scheduled Inspections and Service Preventive Maintenance, Repairs and Upgrades for: Engine Transmission and Driveline Suspension Brakes GG Chpt GG Chpt Original Nick’s Pizza & Pub, San Mateo Tammi Hull www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] Deadline: Photos for 2011 Cars of GGC Calendar GG Chpt Thunderhill Raceway Park,Willows Kelly Collins & Mark Dadgar www.ggcbmwcca.org [email protected] x DECEMBER Dec 4 SLO Parkfield Tour GG Chpt Servicing BMW's in Campbell since 1990 408-379-7828 25 S. Well, here’s your chance to try your hand at this fun game with the other neophytes in our chapter. Even if you’re unsure of your bocce-ball prowess, you may still want to join us for the wine-tasting and subsequent Italian lunch. We meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Berryessa Corners shopping center (southeast corner of Berryessa Road at Capitol Avenue in San Jose) in the lot between Longs and U.S.A. Gasoline. After the 9:45 a.m. drivers’ meeting, we’ll leave promptly at 10:00 to drive north over Calaveras Road, through the East Bay back roads to Blackhawk, where we’ll turn south to reach our final destination at Garre Winery in Livermore around noon. There’s a $5 wine-tasting fee, but it’s applicable to wine purchases. After the tasting, sandwiches and entrees will be available, from $9.95 to $13.95. Once we’ve enjoyed our libations and downed a nice repast, you have the option to work off a few of those calories with a few rounds of bocce ball, or you can continue to other wineries on Tesla Road. The driving tour does not require a reservation—just show up at the appointed time and location. However, the tasting and lunch is limited to 20 participants, so reserve early to ensure a spot. Contact Mary Sandkohl, our East Bay rep, to make your reservation. For more information about the tour, contact Mike Zampiceni. JALAMA BEACH BURGER RUN September 18, 9:45 a.m. Santa Maria Dennis Harrold, [email protected] Join us for a spirited drive to Jalama Beach, south of Vandenberg AFB near Lompoc. Start at the lot by Starbucks at 530 E. Betteravia, across College Drive from BMW of Santa Maria. We’ll meet at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. departure, heading south through Lompoc to Jalama Road. There are 150 turns each way on the drive to the beach, so there’s plenty of opportunity to practice your apexing technique! Our destination is the Jalama Beach Store, also known as the Burger Shack—legendary for their high-octane, onethird-pound, 90%-fat-free lean ground-beef burgers. They also offer fish, chicken, and vegetarian items on the menu. Locals say the road is worth the reward—and that goes double for drivers of sporting machinery! THE BIG TOUR: SONOMA, NAPA, AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN October 2, 8:45 a.m – 4:00 p.m. Sonoma and Napa area Mark Feinberg, [email protected] The Wine Country tour slated for October 2 will be one of the best, most scenic, and longest tours of 2010 (and yes, there will be a few twisties). It promises to be an extremely rewarding Saturday drive across some of the best Napa and Sonoma County mountain terrain, passing vineyards and dairy farms. Our day will begin with a meeting at the Starbucks in Sonoma on Highway 12. The tour will head north on Highway 12 and then turn right on Trinity Road/Oakville Grade to head up and over the twisty roads of this mountain route to Napa Valley. Next we’ll traverse the valley floor to go north on the Silverado Trail, then on to Highway 128 through Calistoga and Geyersville. After a short drive on Highway 101 north to Dutcher Creek Road, we’ll head south to Stewarts Point/Skaggs Springs Road and head west. This will put us at our Lake Sonoma stop at around 11:30 a.m. From Lake Sonoma, we’ll continue west on Stewarts Point/Skaggs Spring Road to Stewarts Point, where we’ll stop for lunch and enjoy the soothing breeze off the Pacific. After lunch we’ll backtrack on Stewarts Point/Skaggs Spring Road to Tin Barn Road, then turn left on King Ridge road—a wonderful single-lane road—to Cazadero. Then we’ll wind our way south on the Bohemian Highway (yes, we are in California!) and eventually end our tour in Petaluma. TECH SESSION: VALLEJO October 9, 10:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m. Milt’s Service Garage, Vallejo Aleksey Kadukin, [email protected] Join us for a tech session on how to buy and modify a BMW without going broke! We’ll briefly go over a few questions: Which are the best models to look for? Which models should you steer clear of? What do you want to do with your new Bimmer? With those questions answered, let’s get ready to make it yours. First we’ll go over basic maintenance items; suspension, engine, and drivetrain modifications; brake systems; wheels and tires—and we’ll break it down for you. Then Adrian Radu, a BMW Master Technician, will guide you through the maze of performance products necessary to transform your daily driver into a capable machine—with minimal effort and money. Please RSVP to Aleksey Kadukin. Details will be coming soon as the route is finalized. Imagine knowing what to do when your car begins to slide, or being in control during that “panic stop.” Come out to our next Golden Gate Chapter Car Control Clinic and learn these skills. No matter what you call these events, from Chassis Dynamics Exercises to Safety Schools, the fact is that you can't have more fun than pushing your car past the limits of traction in a safe environment (how else are you supposed to know what it's capable of—and what you're capable of?). Let's face it: Everybody knows how to drive, and we all think we're pretty good at it. Here's your chance to have fun while you find out just how well you've acquired those skills—and learn many new basic car-control skills in a single day. Maybe you're interested in learning more about your car's handling or want to break some bad habits. Maybe you just want to be a better driver every time you get in your car. The good news? A GGC Car Control Clinic is the perfect answer in either case. Consider the incredible value of this compared to similar schools with big-name companies costing nearly a thousand dollars. Make it a gift to yourself, a friend, or family member—teens love these clinics! Need more information? Join a Chapter discussion forum! They're great for asking questions about the car-control clinic program and other GGC events. See www.ggcBMWcca.org under “GGC Talk” or visit www.JustRacing.com/ggc_bmw_cca. Unks A round the eastern and southern parts of the country, July is usually a time to hide inside air-conditioned homes and buildings. In the San Francisco Bay Area, however, July is a time to escape—or at least avoid—the cool, foggy embrace found in The City proper. If you are a member of the Golden Gate Chapter, that can mean going on a drive with fellow members along nice twisty roads, enjoying beautiful scenery—then gorging yourself at a barbecue. The GGC’s summer barbecue is hosted by the amazing and gracious David and Bonnie Bell, perhaps better known to fans of BMW racing as the parents of race-car driver Matt Bell. This soirée is a delightful social event where new and longtime chapter members can meet in the relaxing environment of the Bell family’s spacious and beautiful backyard. This year, after the morning drive, chapter members slowly arrived at the Bell home in the afternoon, triggering the grill—which filled the warm air with the smell of ribs and chicken. Faster than the BMWs that brought the members, a line formed for food and drink, which included several types of beer and wine—the latter clearly for the refined, or those wanting to appear refined. The barbecued ribs and plump chickens did not disappoint, judging by the empty plates and smiles on faces, making one think that this BMW army drives with their stomachs. Disregarding their moms’ advice, after filling their bellies to capacity, people made a quick change into their swimming suits and jumped into the pool or the neighboring hot tub. Sadly, a lack of scissors at the party made running around with a pair impossible—a victory for mothers everywhere. Dazzling onlookers with a dizzying display of leaps into the pool for a football, some partiers created their own Sea World splash zone, perhaps in honor of the departed giant inflatable plastic killer whale that had graced the pool at the barbecue a few years before. In the hot tub, Jeff Cowan held court around his floating table, which, while not lacking in Dionysius’ fermented grape juice, could have used a roasted pig for effect. With no deaths—or even near-deaths—from cramps, ice cream and cookies were served. The lovely 79° temperature made the ice cream a welcome treat—one made better with the introduction of various sundae toppings. The combination of perfect barbecue weather, great ribs and chicken, the pool, the ice cream, and the amazing company made me wonder if the Bells might start to worry that no one would ever leave. Luckily, the weather started to cool as the sunlight faded, and people finally began to succumb to delayed food comas—bringing a close to another spectacular Golden Gate Chapter summer barbecue. The chapter would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Bell family for once again hosting this favorite summertime event! 14 Die Flüsternde Bombe September 2010 September 2010 Die Flüsternde Bombe 15 The Drive to the Summer BBQ Summer BBQ 2010 O kay, my car is the Littlest BMW That Could—a 2008 128i—but I still have so much fun with it! But if it weren’t for the BMW CCA, I might not have learned how to better drive my car—and I might not have met a bunch of cool people. My first GGC driving tour was for the 2008 BBQ party when I was a total newbie. I’d never done this kind of driving before. However, I love a challenge, so I joined that first tour—alone! Honestly, it scared the daylights out of me, driving with them that first time; I thought, “These people must be crazy to drive like this on these narrow roads!” Little did I know they had training. One of the people I met later at the party was Bob Goebel, who told me about the car-control-clinic (CCC) program he leads for the GGC. So I signed up for a clinic. Those exercises seemed mind-boggling at the time, but later, what I learned all came back to me. So when the 2010 summer picnic and tour rolled around—the Pescadero Tour again—I had to go! I was a bit worried about keeping up, but hey: ya just give it all ya got. I chose the slower group at first, and was positioned right behind Jeff Cowan. “Oh, no—he’s way out of my league!” I thought—but on I went. Cowan may have taken it a little easy on us, but I still pushed it more than I ever had on any other tour. The lessons from the CCC came back to me: how to position your seat, how to steer correctly, look only where you want the car to go, yet see all around you, brake before the corner, hit the apex, use the throttle to shift the weight of the car back to carve, and feel your car. On one corner I felt the back end sliding a bit, and heard the tires starting to screech—oh, yeah, it’s throttle time! I amazed myself with the confidence I felt. I smoked those roads—well, as much as I could! I even kept up with the faster group! At one point we encountered two dips in the road; at speed, it felt like we were catching air. I was, like, “Ahhh, yeah! I’m driving a roller coaster!” BIG smile—but I stayed focused. To drive safely, there is no time for anything but the road! We rallied on through the next fifteen miles or so before the tour wound down. I seriously could have done another hour! The Bells’ picnic was a great way to end our day: a beautiful home, good food, and great people. The whole day felt like a mini vacation to me! I thank the Bells for such amazing hospitality—and I am grateful to all of my instructors at the CCC! While I’m absolutely jazzed about the driving skills I’ve learned, this Club really is about the awesome people I have met along the way! —Ashleigh Lauren 16 Die Flüsternde Bombe September 2010 September 2010 Die Flüsternde Bombe 17 Summer BBQ 2010 GOLDEN GATE CHAPTER, BMW CCA BOARD MEETING MINUTES By Aleksey Kadukin Secretary, GGC BMW CCA July 08, 2010 Location: Original Nick’s Pizzeria & Pub, San Mateo Board members in attendance: Kelly Collins (member at large), Ian Dunn (membership chair), Tammi Hull (president and treasurer), Aleksey Kadukin (secretary), Donna Seeley (vice president) Board members not in attendance: Mark Dadgar (member at large) Other members in attendance: Jeff Cowan (Pacific Region vice president), Mary Sandkohl (East Bay rep), Mike Fernandez (New member Mike Fernandez, at his first board meeting, shares pictures of his super-rare turbo Dinan E30 M3. Kadukin received a comment from one participant that the admission price was a bit expensive. However, autocross team thinks that the Evolution school is a better deal than organizing the chapter’s own event. ▪ Upcoming CCC not sold out yet, but it’s close. Seeley mentions need for instructors and has invited several NASA friends to instruct. The August and October CCCs are the last ones scheduled for the year. ▪ Status of Infineon HPDE is under review due to $700plus entry price needed from entrants if no additional sponsorship is attained. Thunderhill HPDE is set for November. A one-day option for registrants is suggested and is under investigation by HPDE team. ▪ Club races are coming up: Laguna Seca will have a race in September. Two weeks later, another race is scheduled at Las Vegas. (Fernandez shares the story of driving non-BMW, pointy-starred, AMG Black Series at Laguna Seca recently. Everybody wants to hear more about turbo E30 M3 instead of such nonsense.) Communications report (Collins): ▪ No new updates for the calendar or website. ▪ Dunn has posted all upcoming events to chapter’s Facebook page. Social-events report (Hull): ▪ Chapter’s summer picnic is in three weeks and is expected to be a great event. ▪ Festorics: Cowan compared this year’s registration to the previous year; there are more registered members this year. ▪ Ken Glidewell (Peninsula Area rep) attended Palo Alto Concourse D’Elegance 2011 meeting. ▪ Glidewell brought a new event: Tesla factory tour on August 25 (Dunn now regrets some statements from his June ATB column after this exciting announcement.) ▪ Rick Jennings, an active Club member, proposed a photorally idea to Kadukin. Kadukin will forward all details and contacts to Hull. ▪ Winter Party planning is about to start. The usual questions are date and location. A winery in Alameda is one possibility; their event manager is a BMW CCA MINUTES member and has connections with party-supply-rental business. Hull requests that Cowan check out the winery. Cowan asks Hull what the budget is for the party. Hull asks everyone to visit the place for a variety of opinions. Tech-session report (Kadukin): ▪ July 24 tech session at Performance Art in Gilroy is on track. ▪ Hal Dorton from Milt’s Service Garage in Vallejo has been given a tech-session proposal. The session is set for early October. ▪ Cowan sent Big-O-Tire contact to Kadukin to follow up with tech-session proposals. Kadukin will follow up. ▪ Kadukin will follow up on Chevron tech-session idea, too. ▪ Paula Williamson (North Bay Area rep) proposed a second ladies-only tech session for September. She received great feedback after the first one in May. Membership chair’s report (Dunn): ▪ We have more than 4,600 members and associates! ▪ A representative of Sonnen BMW in San Rafael approached Dunn with a proposal for holding several events at the dealership—any kind of event. Board will follow up with the ideas. Vice-president’s report (Seeley): ▪ Seeley points to the fact that the board is using modernmeeting procedures for the first time. She refers to the talking-basket concept, which is real bread basket here. (The concept is simple: As long as a board member is holding the basket, they are the only one talking; that reduces confusion over simultaneous conversations… and extreme bread consumption.) ▪ Seeley makes the call to members for photo submissions for the 2011 calendar. Treasurer’s report (Hull): ▪ We have money. President’s report (Hull): ▪ BMW CCA’s Oktoberfest at Elkhart Lark, Wisconsin is in August, and Hull is planning to attend. ▪ Hull participated in first Pacific Region conference call organized by Cowan and indicated that it bored her. (Cowan misses that part (thankfully!) due to a conversation with Fernandez about the handling capabilities of the E21 chassis.) Seeley points to the usefulness of phones’ mute button. ▪ Hull has received mail to the new chapter address! Area-reps report (Sandkohl): ▪ Nothing to report. Pacific Region vice-president’s report (Cowan): ▪ Cowan organized Pacific Region conference call for all the region’s chapter presidents to participate. Not every bad word spoken was about GGC. In fact, no bad words were spoken about GGC at all! ▪ Cowan attended Puget Sound Chapter’s E30 picnic in Tacoma, Washington, and shares his stories about the cool people and over 200 E30s. ▪ Street Survival school budgetary challenge is being discussed at the National Board level; they’re working to resolve the issues. ANOTHER WAX REVIEW?! F irst off, let me start by saying this review isn’t for our avid detailer segment of the Club (or CCAers who love shiny things). Rather, this is for those who want to protect their cars’ paint from the elements, but who aren’t interested in spending all their free time polishing, re-polishing, walking away from, and then being inexplicitly pulled back to re-repolish their cars. If you tour my garage, you’d find a Porter-Cable 6.5” random-orbit dual-action polisher and a 7” Porter-Cable rotary buffer. Along the shelves you’d also find Meguiars’ entire line of beige-bottled professional products like HighTech Yellow Wax or #1 Medium-Cut Cleaner—symptoms of an erstwhile detailaholic. In an earlier period of my BMW life, I owned a 1996 E36 M3 in that wonderful Cosmos metallic black (aka Cosmosschwarz). Masked with a 90% window tint and revoiced with a growling Active Autowerke exhaust, it was the consummate evil-looking BMW. But that sin came at a price; the road and elements from my long commute from the East Bay to Silicon Valley took their toll. To maintain the wet, deep-black look, I had to dedicate at least every other weekend to maintaining the finish—which explains the quantity of equipment and products I own. After a while, the constant need to wash, clean, sometimes repair, and wax became overwhelming. I sold the Cosmos M3 and later chose my next E36 M3 in a slightly-less maintenance-challenged finish—silver (aka Arktissilber). However, after taking another job with a commute, I soon learned that even metallic gray needs some level of attention, too. Not wanting to fall into the same every-otherweekend detailing trap, I evaluated my goals; I knew I wanted to keep the car’s finish protected and presentable, but I didn’t want spend twelve to twenty hours a month washing and waxing. Enter a small sample packet of Meguiars Liquid NXT Wax, which was handed to me at the Golden Gate Chapter’s Holiday Party. This nudged my decision to try a new approach. After a good washing of the silver paint, I glanced wistfully at my dualaction polisher on the shelf. But resisting the urge, I opened the little sample pack of NXT wax. I noticed as I applied the liquid to my car that it went on fairly quickly and easily. Once it dried, I removed the wax with a terrycloth towel. It just seemed too easy! My car went into the rainy season with this new wax. To my surprise, the wax kept the rainwater at bay for the entire winter season! On my next trip to the auto store, I picked up the paste version of NXT wax. My logic? Thicker substrate equals better protection. 22 Die Flüsternde Bombe September 2010 By Percy Chow In preparation for the upcoming winter, I washed my car and then applied the paste wax. Application was relatively simple using the included applicator pad. I moved the car into the sun to allow the wax to bake and dry. Then came the fun part of wiping off the wax to reveal the lovely shine. But unlike the liquid, which wiped off easily, the paste was stubborn, requiring a fair amount of elbow grease to remove. It was really involved—and even after I thought I’d removed it all, a quick walk around the car revealed some spots I’d missed. But the reward for all that hard work was quickly apparent in the taut beads of water blanketing the car after the next rainstorm. And after six months—and the weeks of rain we received back in February—the water was still beading beautifully. Meguiars claims that the wax “polymers bond to your paint and shield it from moisture, UV rays, and corrosion under a glossy micro-thin shell. Because it’s a paste, this barrier is harder and more durable than even your favorite synthetic liquid. It’s the best synthetic protection you can give your vehicle.” Given the results six months out, I am satisfied that the NXT wax is a great compromise for BMW owners who want a certain level of paint protection, but not the routine effort to maintain a concoursquality finish. A quick iPhone shot of the roof of my 1995 BMW M3 last February shows that the rain water is STILL beading up after the NXT wax from August! For this project: Parts: $17.99 Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 Paste available from Kragen, Walmart, and Target stores. Time: 45–75 minutes to apply and remove the wax on an averagesized car. Meguiars has other claims regarding ultimate high-gloss shine, removing swirls, et cetera. But in my honest opinion, to achieve truer shine and swirl removal, you really need to spend some time with other detail products—like clay and polish—and use the NXT paste wax as a good follow-up product. That’s not the aim of this review, though. If you prefer a quick wash-andwax weekend, take a look at the Meguiars NXT line of wax products for good, long-lasting paint protection.
