Science Process
What is the Scientific Process
The scientific process or method is considered fundamental to the scientific investigation and acquisition
of new knowledge based on physical evidence. Scientists propose new ideas about our world in the form
theories: observations, hypotheses, and deductions. Predictions from these theories are tested by
experiment. If a prediction turns out to be correct, the theory survives.
Steps in the Scientific Process
Question: Choose a problem and state the problem as a question
Research: Read, get advice, and make observations
Hypothesis: Make a prediction about what will happen.
Design an experiment and record the data
Analysis: Organize your data, create a chart or graph of your data
Conclusions: Was your hypothesis correct
Report Results and REFLECT: Summarize your findings and ask
questions (who, where, when, why, what, how)
Observing
Using the five senses to learn about an
object or event, or to collect information
about an object.
Classifying
Placing objects or events into groups based
Measuring
Determining the length, area, volume, mass
or temperature to describe and quantify
objects.
Communicating
Describing an object or event to another
Inferring and Predicting
Guessing or drawing a conclusion about an
object or future event based on
observations.
Controlling Variables
Representing Data
Experimenting
Studying how attributes vary by
