Nipmuc Regional High School
Our Mission: “Academic excellence, respect and commitment to community”
Fall 2011 Newsletter
A Message from John K. Clements, Principal
As we begin the first few weeks of the 2011-2012 school year, I am excited to welcome you
to another academic year and eager to begin my role as principal of Nipmuc Regional High
School. It is with great enthusiasm and pride that I take on my new responsibilities at our
school. For the past twelve years I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a teacher and
assistant principal at Nipmuc. During this time I have seen on a daily basis the caring culture,
high quality teaching, and outstanding student achievement that make Nipmuc an
exceptional school. I look forward to working with the members of our school community as
we prepare for another year of teaching and learning.
The coming year promises to be one full of opportunity. In cooperation with the
Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative (MMSI), we are beginning the process of
expanding our Advanced Placement programming and improving student achievement in
these courses. As a recipient of a gain grant from MMSI, Nipmuc will receive resources and
training to bolster our already strong AP program. Throughout the summer, our teachers
participated in grant-funded trainings and we are excited to see a significant jump in
enrollment in Advanced Placement courses to begin the year.
Additionally, throughout the year we will continue building off our core values and beliefs to
identify and integrate 21st century learning expectations into our curriculum. This is an
important step for our school as we work to ensure that our students are prepared for
success in college, careers, and their personal lives.
I look forward to keeping you updated on our school's progress as we meet these challenges
and others throughout the school year. In addition to providing this newsletter, I will also be
communicating regularly through the Nipmuc Regional High School Principal's blog that I
started in August. The blog can be accessed at www.johnkclements.blogspot.com and is
accessible through the school's website. I hope you subscribe to the blog as a way to get upto-date information about our school.
With excitement for the year ahead - John Clements

be taken away from the student and held at the office for
claiming by a parent. We appreciate your understanding.
Our health education program will provide students with accurate
information that will enable them to make health decisions based on
correct facts. However, the administration and the Mendon-Upton
schools respect the right of the family to make the ultimate
determinations about sensitive and personal issues. Parents/guardians
must contact the teacher or administration if they wish to arrange a
preview of the health instructional materials.
If you do not wish your child to take part in any of the units related to
human sexuality issues, a brief note to your child’s teacher requesting
that your child not take part will be honored.
During the time of his or her absence from the program your child
will be asked to write a research paper or complete another
appropriate project.
Health Office News
Please return the blue health forms to the office at your earliest
convenience. This information is needed to update the data
in our computer system and critical in the event of an
emergency. This form also allows the nurse to give your child
Advil/Tylenol with your permission. Please see our website
mursd.org – Nipmuc – Health Services tab for updated
information.
BMI screening will be completed in the spring for all 10th grade
students. If you would like to exclude your child from this
screening please send an email to [email protected]

Parents – We Need Your Help!
Cell phones should not interfere with classroom
instruction – either by ringing, checking voice mail or
texting. Please help us by not calling or texting your child
during the school day. If you need to reach your child
please contact us at 508-529-2130 and we will relay the
message. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please reinforce to your child that if they are sick during the
school day they should report to the nurses’ office before

you if they determine that he/she should be dismissed for the

of class advisors and some of our other student
related advisors. Any money left in the class

With such a large senior athletic class it was hard to determine how well the Warriors would do this year. As always, our standards are
high, but I think that most of us would agree that we truly had a fantastic fall season this year.
WARRIOR SPORTS PAGE
A Message from the Nipmuc Athletic Director
Since Irene has left things have started to take shape with our athletic program.
We have added a new sport, girls’ junior varsity volleyball, this fall and we’re all very excited to see it develop.
The new coach is Mrs. Christine Corey, and she brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the sport. Right
now their first game is scheduled for Tuesday September 27th.
Another addition is our new cheerleading coach Mrs. Lauren Montenegro. She has been a supporter of not only
this group but also the lacrosse program for years. We are confident that the girls will be bringing home the
hardware come tournament time in the early spring.
Our boys and girls cross country teams are once again led by Mr. Dick Auger (boys) and Mr. Mike Maloney
(girls). The two teams had their first meets this past Wednesday and while the boys narrowly lost, the girls were
victorious. Their next meets are in a tri-meet with Douglas and Sutton on Friday September 16th .
The golf team led by Mr. Kevin Connors was victorious in the rain at Wachusett CC this past Wednesday. The
team’s next few matches are Thursday, September 8th vs. Milford, Tuesday, September 13th @ Leicester, and
Thursday September 15th vs. Douglas.
Field hockey, led by head coach Ms. Sara McIntyre and assistant Brenda Talamini is looking to take the next step
in its continuing quest to be recognized as one of the top programs in the district. Their first game (after
Wednesday’s postponement) will be Friday, 9/10 and next week they challenge Milford on Monday, 9/12 and
Hopedale on Friday, 9/16.
Football opened its season on Friday night with a win against Grafton. They have been practicing since Monday
September 22nd and couldn’t wait to put their efforts to the test. On Friday, 9/16, Coaches Phil Schiloski (head
coach), Scott Glassman and Ed Buckley will be making somewhat of a homecoming as they travel to Hopkinton
to visit their old “stomping” grounds.
Girls Soccer had their opener delayed this past Wednesday due to the rainy weather, so their opener will now be
on Saturday 9/10 @ Bromfield. The girls led by head coach Howard Cohen, assistant coach Miguel Vidal, and
new JV coach Maria Tonry will play their first home game on Friday 9/16 vs Hopedale.
Boys Soccer will also start on Saturday at home vs. the Bromfield School. The team is looking to get back to the
state finals after finishing second in the state last year. They know it will not be easy as it has added perennial
powers Algonquin and Holliston to the schedule. We shall see how things work out.

closing or sharing information about upcoming school events or news, AlertNow will serve as an additional means
of increasing our communication with families.
Please be aware that all contact information must be accurate in order for the district to communicate with you
through AlertNow. In order to be sure that the email addresses and phone numbers that we have are correct, please
return the contact information sheets that students received during the first days of school.

The Warriors Club Needs Your Help!
The Warriors Club was put in place to help support student athletics
with expenses that are not covered under the user fees. The Warriors
Club also sponsors championship awards, senior athletic award
banquets and scholarships. We’ve also provided AED defibrillator
machines and an outdoor scoreboard with the support of the
community.
The Warriors Club welcomes new members. We encourage you to
become involved so we can continue to support Nipmuc Athletics. We
meet at 7:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in the PDC at
Nipmuc. The first meeting for this school year is September 7, 2011.
Please consider joining us to help plan for the future of the Warriors
Club.
If you have any questions on the Warriors Club, please email Kris
Mignone at [email protected] ; Karen Mayzel at
[email protected]; Kelly McElreath at [email protected]; or
Keri Brodeur at [email protected].

Privacy Act Statement: This explains how we will use the information you give us.
The Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act requires the information on this application. You do not have to give the information, but
if you do not, we cannot approve your child for free or reduced price meals. You must include the social security number of the adult
household member who signs the application. The social security number is not required when you apply on behalf of a foster child or you
list a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program or Food Distribution
Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) case number or other FDPIR identifier for your child or when you indicate that the adult
household member signing the application does not have a social security number. We will use your information to determine if your child
is eligible for free or reduced price meals, and for administration and enforcement of the lunch and breakfast programs. We MAY share
your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their
programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules.
Non-discrimination Statement: This explains what to do if you believe you have been treated unfairly. “In accordance with Federal
law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin,
sex, age, or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW,
Washington, D.C. 20250‐9410 or call (800) 795‐3272 or (202) 720‐6382 (TTY). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.”
SHARING INFORMATION WITH MEDICAID/SCHIP
Dear Parent/Guardian:
If your children get free or reduced price school meals, they may also be able to get free or low‐cost health
insurance through Medicaid or the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Children with health
insurance are more likely to get regular health care and are less likely to miss school because of sickness.
Because health insurance is so important to children’s well‐being, the law allows us to tell Medicaid and SCHIP
that your children are eligible for free or reduced price meals, unless you tell us not to. Medicaid and SCHIP
only use the information to identify children who may be eligible for their programs. Program officials may
contact you to offer to enroll your children. Filling out the Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application
does not automatically enroll your children in health insurance.
If you do not want us to share your information with Medicaid or SCHIP, fill out the form below and send in
(Sending in this form will not change whether your children get free or reduced price meals).
‰
No! I DO NOT want information from my Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application shared
with Medicaid or the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
If you checked no, fill out the form below.
