5 The Evian Championship Juniors
Cup celebrates its 10th edition on 20
and 21 September.
2016 sees golf’s grand comeback to the Olympic
Games. After Rio, players head to France to the event
not-to-be-missed on the women’s golf international
schedule, The Evian Championship.
From 15 to 18 September, the world’s elite will pay its
traditional visit to the greens in Evian and this year
will celebrate the victory of the newly-crowned Olympic champion. With its very tough selection criteria
based exclusively on sports performance at international level, the tournament will be able to boast
an unmatched line-up that includes the presence
of the Olympic gold medal winner joined by all of
the leading women players in the world. The Evian
Championship, the 5th Major on the LPGA tour, is the
first tournament to include the Olympic qualifying criterion.
Being scheduled at the end of the season, The Evian
Championship is of particular significance to all 120
players as it crowns the best female golfer of the
year at the Rolex Annika Major Award (2015: Inbee
Park, 2014: Michelle Wie).
The tournament’s chairman asserts his support
towards the entire international golf industry. For the
first time, three qualifying events (Europe, USA, Korea)
will enable 5 players to secure the ultimate ticket.
“Via The Evian Championship, we are able to be bold
and unremittingly invent the golf of tomorrow. Lydia
Ko’s first Grand Slam win at The Evian Championship
2015, aged just 18, becoming the youngest player
in History to win a Major, is the very essence of everything that inspires and motivates us to make this
tournament unique. Using The Evian Championship
platform to aid the development of young talent and
bring alive the connection between the elite of women’s world golf and a new generation of champions remains our greatest ambition,” Franck Riboud,
Chairman of Danone and Chairman of the Evian
Championship, reminds us•

WORLD GOLF’S NEW
QUALIFYING CRITERION
FOR THE OLYMPIC
CHAMPION
First-time exemption
for Bronte Law,
the winner of the
Annika Award
Golf’s comeback to the Olympic
Games has prompted golf’s governing bodies to adopt a new
qualifying criterion. The five women’s Majors have reached an
agreement to offer an exemption
to the Olympic champion. The
Evian Championship, which takes
place one month after the Games,
has therefore added Criterion 5
to its 2016 selection process. It will
be the first Major to welcome the
Olympic champion•
The English student Bronte Law
(21), 3-time winner this season,
was named the winner of the 2016
Annika Award Presented by 3M,
given to the top college player
of the year, selected by a panel
of college golfers, coaches and
members of the golfing media. The
UCLA’s champion, World Amateur
n°4, also receives an exemption for
a place in the line-up at the 2016
edition of the Evian Championship.
An initiative that is totally in tune to
the Evian Championship’s desire
to help develop young talent•

ROLEX ANNIKA MAJOR
AWARD, THE WINNER
CROWNED IN EVIAN
For the 3rd year in a row, the Rolex
Annika Major Award will crown
the grand champion who performs best throughout the season’s 5 Majors. At the official
ceremony held during The Evian
Championship and scheduled
for Saturday 17 September 2016
at the Evian Resort, former Major
winners along with champions in
contention to win the trophy will
be honored, before discovering
who will succeed Michelle Wie
(2014) and Inbee Park (2015) as
winner of the Rolex Annika Major
Award.
The world number 1, Lydia Ko, winner of the first Major of the season
(ANA Inspiration), is already well
placed.“We all know what Annika has done for golf, how much
she has helped it grow, which is
why her name is so well matched
to this trophy”, explains the world
number 1.“I’m delighted to be in
the running, even though there
are still four Majors to be played
and so many great players. I’m
just going to take one tournament at a time and throw myself
into the race for the Rolex Annika
Major Award. We’ll see who lifts
up the trophy in Evian at the end
of the day”•

THE NEW
GENERATION IN
POLE POSITION
There is an exciting wind of youth
blowing on women’s world golf,
exemplified by its number 1 player
Lydia Ko, Evian Championship
champion 2015, who has a whole
generation of new talent following in her wake. Be it the Top 5
at the season’s first Major, won by
Lydia Ko, or the champions and
players currently in good form on
the US and European tours, such
as Hyo Joo Kim, Ha Na Jang, Lexi
Thompson, Charley Hull or the
incredible Ariya Jutanugarn with
her three wins in a row on the US
tour, the average age is around
20. This momentum is perfectly in
line with the commitment shown
by The Evian Championship Galaxy to offer the youngest players
great opportunities to make it to
the highest level of the game•
Lydia Ko
The amazing world n°1
New Zealand, Age 19
A true prodigy, the golf champion already has a number of golf records and performances to her name. The
youngest world number 1 in the history of golf (on either the men’s or women’s tours), the youngest player
to win a Major (The Evian Championship 2015) followed by a second (ANA Inspiration), the youngest Rolex
Player of the Year (in 2015) and with a total of 10 other LPGA wins, Lydia Ko dominates women’s golf, instilling
it with her passion for life and her boldness. Her immense talent and her personality has led to her becoming
a Rolex testimonee and global sports ambassador for evian®•
Her historic record
Lydia Ko’s win placed The Evian Championship 2015 in golf’s history books. Aged 18 years, 4
months and 20 days, Lydia Ko became the youngest player in history to win a Major. A record!•

Inbee Park
the Korean supe rstar
World n°2, Korea, Age 27
What a year 2015 was for Inbee Park! Two Major wins, at the RICOH Women’s British Open
and KPMG Women’s PGA Championship,
add to an already long list. The Korean has
won six Majors since the start of her career.
Inbee Park is keeping up the pace with an
excellent start to the 2016 season. She just
needs to add the Evian Championship to
her achievements to produce the “Super
Career Grand Slam”•
Lexi Thompson
a champion in the making
World n°3, USA, Age 21
Runner-up at the Evian Championship 2015,
Lexi Thompson has been 3rd in the world
rankings for 16 weeks now, in particular
thanks to her LPGA Tour win in February at
the Honda LPGA Thailand. She already has a
Major under her belt, won at the age of 18,
and the young American is now a benchmark on the world tour•
Brooke M. Henderson
the best of the young
generation
World n°4, Canada, Age 18
2015 saw the emergence of this young
talent at top-level golf. With her first win on
the LPGA Tour at the age of just 17 (the Cambia Portland Classic in August 2015), this
young prodigy is right up there with the world’s elite. Eight Top 10 finishes since the start
of the 2016 season - there’s no doubt about
it, many more wins lie ahead for Brooke Henderson•
Ranking as of 6/06/2016

MENU
Ariya Jutanugarn
the new star
World n°10, Thailand, Age 20
2016 sees the emergence of a new champion. Ariya Jutanugarn, sister of Moriya, another player on the US Tour, is the new star on
the LPGA Tour with three straight wins (Yokohama Tire Classic - Kingsmill Championship Volvik Championship) propelling her to 10th
place in the Rolex Rankings. She is the first
Thai to win a title on the LPGA Tour•
Beth Allen
European number 1
World n°103, USA, Age 34
Beth Allen turned pro in 2005 and rapidly secured her card for the European Tour 2006.
The young American has since monopolized
the top places through to her in 2015 at the
ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters. With 2
Top 5 finishes in 2016, Beth Allen is ahead of
Shanshan Feng at the top of the European
rankings•
Karine Icher
French number 1
World n°52, France, Age 37
With 5 European wins to her name, the
French n°1 is France’s ambassador for golf
in the USA where she plays. Karine Icher is
on top form this season as her 3rd place finish at the Shoprite LPGA Classic, where she
carded a superb 62 on round 2, goes to
show. She was a member of the European
Solheim Cup Team 2015 and is also in top
position to represent France at the Olympic
Games•

THE MAJOR COURSE
The Major course at the Evian Resort Golf Club, which was
totally redesigned in 2013, continues to mature and blossom in abundant natural surroundings and still receives
great care and attention. A continuous goal: having one
of the most beautiful courses in terms of quality, all year
long.
Works in 2016. The very nature of this mountain golf
course causes some gully erosion of the bunkers, reducing cleanliness and quality of the sand. The bunkers
will all be emptied and the base covered with “Capillary
Concrete”, a sustainable, ecological coating whose ambassador is Annika Sörenstam•
THE EVIAN RESORT,
LEADING LUXURY GOLF RESORT
This on-going commitment to customer service, working
in continual synergy with the Evian Championship and
a policy of carrying out grand-scale works has enabled
the Evian Resort to win the World Luxury Hotel Award for
Europe’s leading luxury resort 2015•
A NEW LOOK FOR THE CLUBHOUSE
After grand-scale renovation of the Hôtel Ermitage****,
the golf course and the Hôtel Royal*****, it’s the turn of
the Clubhouse to undergo a makeover. A new look to welcome golfers and plunge them into a world devoted to
their sport, with great importance placed on The Evian
Championship•

champions’ footsteps on the legendary course at the

Welcome to Savoie Mont Blanc!
With 65.8 million tourist bed
nights per year, Savoie Mont
Blanc is Europe’s most popular
mountain holiday area and the
world’s leading ski destination.
The magnificent form of Mont
Blanc dominates a landscape
criss-crossed by the world-class
ski areas of almost 110 resorts,
while four large Alpine lakes
– majestic Lake Geneva, Lake
Annecy, Lake Bourget and Lake
Aiguebelette – give the valleys
an unexpected hint of the Riviera. Evian and neighbouring
Thonon are just two of the area’s
famously beautiful towns, which,
alongside Annecy, Aix-les-Bains,
Chambéry and Chamonix, attract visitors throughout the year.
Good living also means fine dining, as can be found at Savoie
Mont Blanc’s 30 Michelin-starred
restaurants. And why not use
your visit to the Evian Championship to enjoy an impromptu
stroll? After a great day’s golf, a
walk, a bike ride, a spa or some
shopping…

POSTER
Can be downloaded at www.evianchampionship.com/en/media/
The 2016 poster, designed around Lydia Ko, world number 1 and
defending champion, encapsulates the three key words that underpin
its creative approach:
Epic: the graphic design finds its inspiration in social media codes, a
combination of elements that make a whole, a metaphor for the epic
nature of the tournament•
Dynamic: the golf movement, powerful in the finish position, and Lydia
Ko’s attitude, concentrated and commanding, are presented using a
geometrical approach that is a source of natural energy•
Modern: minimalism and simplicity fit in with the contemporary landscape of current graphic design codes, underlining the avant-garde side
of the tournament•
